That's right. Nicholas Cage named his son Kal-El.

I am tired of trite names like Rumer and Scout and Apple. Let's name our baby after Superman!

That child had better develop some powers because if he doesn't kick asses pre-emptively on the playground, he'll have black-and-blue bum himself.

How long before that becomes, on the playground, "Kill Crappola Cage"?

Well, in my cultural stupidity, I didn't know that was a Superman reference but some reference to Kabala or something.

I kind of like 'Scout' because I'm very fond of the book 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. But 'Kal-El'? Bleh. I'm not a big fan of 'Apple' either (Gwyneth's baby).

Wasn't Nic Cage supposed to play Superman in the new Superman movie until Tim Burton dropped the picture ? I wonder if Nic has had Superman on the brain ever since ?

You know...I knew Nicholas Cage had a thing for Elvis and Superman but that's just going too over board. What is up with people giving their kids these HORRIBLE names?? He couldn't name him CLARK?? That at least sounds like a real name. It would be like naming you're kid after a Romulan or something from Star Trek.

That is so annoying to me! I feel bad for the kid.

Mike e-mailed me about this today and, even though this is N. Cage we're talking about, I was still surprised. I mean, this child has a mother, right? And she allowed this?

I like Apple, though. ****, I even like Phineus (though I wouldn't do that to a child, no siree - I like seeing it in fiction.)

I actually like traditional, simple names for the most part. My favorite names for boys are Henry, Eli, Saul (or Sol), and formerly traditional names like Wilder (Wiley for short). I like Wolfe as a first name, too, which is a bit stranger.

For girls, Kate (not short for anything), Greta, Stella, and Beatrice. I'm also partial to Elsbeth, but I wouldn't want that to turn into Beth. I love names like Mathilda and Madeline, but I prefer how the French say those, and I think I'd get tired of saying it over and over.

They are all names I really love to say. I like Apple, as I said, but I wouldn't want to say it all the time. I'd wind up saying, "Hey, girlie," all the time.

Okay Kal-el is bad but what about Jason Lee's kid Pilot Inspecktor or Penn Jillette's daughter Moxie Crimefighter????

I don't have a list of kids names I like, although when I thought I was going to have a girl she was going to be Zoe Suki. And now I have Holden Akira. If I do have a girl eventually I will not name her Zoe because then people will think I am some sort of Salinger freak.

You know, I LOVE Moxie Crimefighter. As dumb celebrity names go, that's a winner. But I LOVE it. Because I would totally get a kick out of saying my own name all the time. "Moxie. Moxie Crimefighter." It's just so spy!

I kinda have a soft spot in my heart for Moon Unit Zappa.

When I named my kid Thomas, so many people were surprised, apparently thinking I'd go for Barnabas or Raven or something. I just figured the fun names are for pets (I have my favorite: Mortimer, who's just waiting for a dog or cat to be attached to) and that kids have a rough enough time out there without having to defend their very names every day. If I'd had a daughter she'd have been Emma.

Bee likes to joke that if we ever had a kid, regardless of gender, the name would have to be Jesus Elvis. Thank goodness we won't be having a kid!!!

I like Celtic-sounding names or spellings.

I wouldn't mind naming a girl Rhiannon, but I'd be more likely to use Sarah or Christine

I like the names Rhys (pronounced Reese), but will be more likely to use Erik or Michael.

Too bad, in a way. One of each could be Rhys and Rhiannon.

I like Alice. Easy to spell, classic, pretty, not one of eleventy-twelve Brittknee Tayler Ayashtons in her class. Also, named after someone I love and admire (her godmother) and a family used name. Everyone's a winner.

If my kid was a boy, he was going to be Piers. I love that name- it's Scandanavian for Peter, which means Stone. Of course, J.K. had to create a weasel of a character named Piers Polkiss, so now I'm glad I had a girl. (Not that I wasn' already). Tori is derived from Victoria, which is my eldest sister's name, and I always knew if I had a girl I would name her after Vicki. She practically raised us kids while our parents were off having fun in the Sixties, and it's the least any of us could do. I had a slight problem though- I knew a Vickie Anderson, and I despised her. A co-worker of mine suggested Victoria, with Tori for short, and I went with that. Now everyone thinks I named her after Tori Spelling. :rolleyes:

My niece is named Eleanor - Ellie for short - after her great grandmother. Calling her baby Ellie was just adorable - and now she is just such a little Ellie. I like it because it's a bit retro but not too far out.

I found out yesterday that a friend from school named her daughter "Felinda" - Sounds like a pr0n name to me...

My Mom was an Elinor (slite spelling difference from normal). It is a cool name and I hope it makes a comeback. I like Ella for short.

I think we all know how I feel about unusual names. ;) I actually liked Kal El when I thought it was Kalel and not named after S-man. I like that classic names are making a comeback. I love Eleanor and Isabell and such. I've come across a few tiny Agnes's though and felt a bit of pity for them.

Hey, I chose Rhiannon for a girl way back when but I was convinced I was having a boy (a hunch, not ultrasound) so I didn't really expect to use it. And I was right so I got my Dylan instead. No, not after Bob. I read a lot of Welsh mythology back then. And it was before the name got all trendy and common, so there!

A girl's name I really love is Bronwen. I'm blanking on boy's names at the moment.

Someone should tell Nic Cage that naming his kid Kal-El won't give him super powers. Just think, it will probably be shortened to just Kal by his friends and people will think he was named after Cal Worthington.

Most everyone knows that I chose B's name mearly out of convenience for not having to choose a name for each gender. One name was picked that was appropriate for a girl or a boy.

I love the name Emma. Not only for the book, but really because it sounds romantic. I would have chosen this name for my daughter if my middle name wasn't going to be her middle name too. It would've been weird: Emma Emalia.

Jason Lee just dropped 50 notches in my book. :mad:

I guess I'm just conservative in my name choices. I was named the most common name for my generation and it's scarred me regarding names in general.

My own rules for naming kids:

Easy to spell
Easy to pronounce
No rhyming
No trendy bullsh!t

Then again, do you know how often people misspell our super simple last name? Especially if we have to spell it over the phone.

me: "S-L-O..."
them: "S-O-L-O..."
me: "no. S-L-O-A..."
them: "S-L-A-O..."
me: "NO, YOU FVCKING MORON."

Recently we ordered something and the order came back with a last name of Solqan. Double-you tee eff???

So maybe it doesn't matter what your name is, because people are stupid and will always misspell it anyway.
