Rainy days
Today was an ideal day to ponder what it is about stormy days that I find so tranquil and relaxing. So many people loathe them and find them depressing but I always seem to find myself in a great mood when the weather is less than favorable. All week, the weather was beautiful and warm and yet I was in a funk that I couldn’t get out of. Today seems like just what the doctor ordered though.
A book is just a little better on a rainy day, a nap a little more restful, and a warm cup of coffee just a bit tastier. Am I the only one that feels this way or are there others among us who find particular comfort when the grey skies appear? (Don't even get me started on how much I love to be at Disneyland in the rain) Sometimes I wonder how I would enjoy living somewhere that receives above-average rainfall. I feel like I would fit in just fine with it but maybe I would tire of it quickly and be miserable. Still, considering how I feel today, the thought is a bit enticing. (I realize people that are participating in Mouse Adventure might not be as enamored with the rain right now. At least it isn't hot though, right?) |
I reccomend a move to Portland, Oregon. Or if you really like a lot of rain try the island of Kauai.
|
I like the occasional rain/storm, but I am glad I live on the east side of Washington- Seattle is waaay too soggy for me! I like snowstorms as well, but I hate driving in the crap.

You aren't alone, MBC. :)
I feel less guilty about relaxing on rainy days. I love having hot tea or coffee :coffee: , and curling up with a toasty blanket. I love to catch up on all of my fashion & celeb magazines, and watch lots of DVD's. I feel like the pressure is off when it rains. It's easy to say, "I can't go out, I'm not a fan of driving in stormy weather." However, when I am out, nothing feels as good as getting caught in a downpour! All soaking wet & coming home to a hot bath and getting all toasty & blankety. One of my best kisses was caught in the middle of a downpour on Balboa Island. Waves crashing, clothes clinging, soaking wet hair & glistening skin..sigh..sorry. :) I love fireplaces. All the better when you can curl up with a loved one. :) |
...and Mondays
We're with you on the rainy day thing MBC. There is something about a rainy day - like it helps to cleanse the soul. We find them very peaceful and relaxing. Falling asleep while listening to the rain fall is one of the most peaceful ways to drift off to sleep. |
I love the rain, I love listening to music, especially Jazz, in the rain. I so wouldn't mind living in Washington. Hmmm, my company's got an office in Bothel...
Anyone in OC catch the lightning last night, around 9:30? Oh...my...god. For those who live in parts of the world with actual weather, you have to understand, not only do we rarely get lightning at all in SoCal, when we do, it's the boring, high elevation, above the clouds, you see nothing but flashing clouds kind of lighting. But last night...HUGE bolts of lighting, arching across the entire horizon. Massive ones, some completely horizontal, some branching in every direction, some reaching to the ground. It was the most dramatic lighting I recall ever seeing out here. Frightening and awesome all at once. |
Not to mention the fact this is our second one in about a month? It is so beautiful to watch the light show and the thunder rattles the house which I love too. Of course the kids freak out with that, so I really only enjoy that first clap of thunder and then it's damage control with the kids (which is always good for extra cuddling as an extra bonus).

Next week there will be a thread with ants in the title....;)

Fun evening. :) |
Our lightening storm started on the drive back from Disneyland and continued for HOURS. I had a overnight job near the lagoon and made my way over there about 10:00. I got myself settled, got in my PJs and watching the sky light up with impressive streaks of lightening. I was on the cell to Chris, who was at our house, when lightening hit something close by and blew it up. The lights went out and the cell went dead. Pretty scary when you're in an unfamiliar house. I thought the dogs would be frightened but the noise and flashes didn't bother them at all. I think it finialy calmed down a bit at about 2 am, so, that was a good 5 hour show.
I can't wait for more tonight. It's still just me and the puppies alone in the big house. |
KABOOM!!!!!!!!!!!
It's starting up again. |
I do like the rain, but more importantly I like the cooler weather. It's so nice to pull on a turtleneck or a sweater.

That tree was so scary! Quote:
That lightening was the most impressive I've ever seen out here. We had a great vantage point from the freeway. I'm looking forward to sipping hot coffee while wearing my new jacket during light rain in Paris. :) |
A couple weeks ago we had a great thunder and lightning show here. It was awesome. Lately though, no rain. :(
|
So, did anyone get rained on during mouse adventure or did the weather behave?

I was also forced to use a mechanical pencil the lead of which I continuously broke with each letter drawn since my ink kept running. |
There were about 10 minutes right at the beginning when it rained pretty decently. We found an awning, whipped out the umbrella. Didn't get a drop of water on any paper. No rain for the rest of the game.

Seven lonely days
And a dozen towns ago I reached out one night And you were gone Don't know why you'd run, What you're running to or from All I know is I want to bring you home So I'm walking in the rain, Thumbing for a ride On this lonely Kentucky backroad I've loved you much too long And my love's too strong To let you go, never knowing What went wrong Kentucky rain keeps pouring down And up ahead's another town That I'll go walking thru With the rain in my shoes, Searchin for you In the cold Kentucky rain, In the cold Kentucky rain Showed your photograph To some old gray bearded man Sitting on a bench Outside a gen'ral store They said "Yes, she's been here" But their memory wasn't clear Was it yesterday, No, wait the day before So I fin'ly got a ride With a preacher man who asked "Where you bound on such a dark afternoon?" As we drove on thru the rain As he listened I explained And he left me with a prayer That I'd find you Thought I would share the lyrics to my all time most favorite song in the World.... |

I was over at my friends house today.. saw a bolt of lightening and before I could ask him "did you see that" the thunder came crackling through the sky scaring the crud out of both of us. I jumped about 3 feet and nearly dumped Shiny on the floor. |

Around 2:45am I was doing dishes when a huge, loud, close clap of thunder went off. It rocked the house it was so loud. It was followed by another, smaller bang then we were hit with a cloud burst. It started raining here around 6 last night and has rained pretty steadily ever since. I have the house opened up so I can listen to it. Today is claw day and I am not fancying the trip across town.

Count me in as curious about "claw day"....
|
Let me translate (and if you've met MG it would make more sense). Claw day means she is getting her fabulous nails done. You really must see them. They are 10 tiny works of art.
|
ding ding ding!!! Thank you NA! I ended up being up all night then ran around today, but I got everything done. I am now sporting purple, black and green claws.
|
It's a chick thing. I get it.
|
I think I like the rain and weather best here, because it's a treat, rather than cussing it out for being just another crappy day.
I love the lightning and the thunder and the rain. I also love that it goes away. |
The best kind of storm is the kind that cancels work on a Monday, and then clears up by 10 AM so Chinese restaurants can open as usual.

Hmm, Maybe California needs to have rain days like the snow days they have in other parts of the country. :) It would seem that many folks can't drive all that well in the rain here anyway, maybe there would be far fewer accidents. Besides, there was nothing cooler than snow days when I was a kid. You always had at least a few surprise days off each year. I have very fond memories of waking up on a school day, seeing the ground covered with snow and eagerly turning on the radio, desperate to hear someone reading school closing announcements. Ah, those were the days. :) |

I love the rain. Sleeping in the rain is wonderful, falling asleep to the rain is the best way to drift off.
In the majors storms of 1981-82 in Northern California, I discovered the most wonderful used book store in San Jose (alas long gone now). Long rows upon rows of old fiction, poetry and just wonderful musty books (also some cool antiques). It was during those stormy days I would spend hours browsing the stacks and more often than not, coming home with a stack of books to read. To this day, when it starts to storm, I have the overwhelming desire to go to a used book store (or antiquing). Thunderstorms here all summer long, those are not fun simply because it is too damned hot & humid. One thing I can say for them, they are powerful, sometimes you can really feel the thunder rolling through, right under the house. My kitties really don't like that at all. Watching the light show, priceless! Donna |
