Tells us Again About your Swank Tunes
Well, it happend again. We were early for Dinner, so we stopped off at our favoirite used records store, Fingerprints. Of course, having resisted the urge to buy for so long, and cheapness of "used" spurred quite a buying bonanza. We picked up:
So what have you added to you collection lately? |
Jesse McCartney.
(For Tori- really!) |
You didn't mention that we found all of that in under 1/2 hour. It makes me shiver to think what would've happened if we had more time.
Oh, and you missed Shonen Knife - "Let's Knife" - it was on my new, expansive desk. |
hmmm...does flogging molly count..lol

I Love Fm!
|
Just picked up the Brian Setzer Swingin' Christmas Album. On sale at Fry's for like $10. Still need to get Diana Krall.
|
I have an accidental iTunes purchase that has surprised me.
Somehow, I ended up with a Skinny Puppy remix album. Never been into Skinny Puppy, though I have vague recollections of playing them when I was in college radio some 20 years ago. Not sure how I ended up with the album (I don't remember clicking the "OK" button in the "are you sure?" window). But I now own it. So I figured, I paid my hard earned money (well, someone else's since I am still working off a gift card), I might as well check it out. Kinda cool industrial-strength stuff that helps relieve some aggressions on the drive home (although it must be played at 11*) * Spinal Tap reference that will go right over NA's head. |
No, I don't get the movie reference but I know and love Skinny Puppy. Actually, there's better noisy angst to be had, but I like SP.
|
Where is this used record store located?
I need to be introduced to some new music. I love Chicago, as you all well know, but I need some new stuff too. (New Chi album next year) I lwas breezing through some Ska at the local Warehouse Music, but am unsure what would be "worth it." |

If you're interested in Ska, I can recommend some 1st wave as well as 2nd wave stuff. I don't know much about the 3rd wave stuff which would include the band that plays at Disneyland-DTD often.
|
mmmm ska.
The band NA is referring to is Suburban Legends. They rock. All the bands I used to listen to are pretty much dead - came and went during the mid-nineties. The Hippos, Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish - their later albums lost the ska sound and became mainstream, but I still love their earlier stuff. The best though was the random cheap-o ska compilations you'd get at shows. "Hey Brother Can You Spare Some Ska" still gets heavy rotation on my iPod. Good stuff. Once you pick up a comp that works for you you can seek out the bands that are featured on it... |

My newest finds are from Teedra Moses. I heard her stuff on the TV show 'Noah's Arc' the other day. Really cool voice. Kind of reminds me of Amel Larrieux. I have also been scrounging and searching for remixed oldies (like Christmas Remixed) and found an album called "What is Hip". It has a remixed version of 'Midnight at the Oasis' and 'Summer Breeze' that I love. |
I have a ska version of Pachelbel's Canon. Actually played it as a recessional at a wedding.
|
A Swanky Tune!
Everybody you have to check this guy out, I first herd this song in Bosnia last New Year's, its a freakin classic, you will laugh your ass off! Its called "In The Disco" and its by Deen, if you want to hear it you can go to dean's website http://www.deenvoice.com/ and click on english then click on In the disco link. Ya its a good time for the whole family!
|
Hehehehehe. I LOVE that someone else still listens to "brother can you spare some ska"!!!
I used to be into the third wave scene in the late nineties. (Not that I don't love bands like the Specials and Madness etc.... I can still listen to the two tone collection for days...) I loved Let's Go Bowling, hepcat, etc. I miss The Hippos, old Reel Big Fish too. Oh and Mealticket!! The trombone player used to sub sometimes at my high school and the days he was there he was like ska royalty to those who knew. I had him as my sub and I was like holy bloody hell batman, your band is so awesome. Damn, I even miss the Aquabats. (They still play and all but I just can't get into them the way I used to love them.) I had the mask and everything and would wear it to shows. The old days for me consisted of skankin' and the ska parade and so many hawaiian shirts. (I still have some of the best hawaiian shirts with like naked surfers on them. Even my son loves hawaiian shirts now.) Oh and Shonen Knife... How I do love broken english rock songs about tomatoes and such... Or even better... Cibo Matto. Very cool. The only new cd I have picked up is the latest Broken Social Scene. They were so good Monday night. So was Feist. |

Tee hee. Ah, how that takes me back. Ska was at it's peak when I was in high school. Sort of makes me want to skank... As for music, I rarely buy stuff. I listen to most stuff I like on launchcast. Right now it's permanently set to Sufjan Stevens. Which, conveniently enough plays lots of other artists I like too. I've been wanting the Lost In Translation soundtrack, as I'm unfamiliar with that sort of music, but I love it in the movie. There also doesn't seem to be a Bollywood station on launchcast... |
Sufjan Stevens..... So good!!!!!! I love him.
|
I now have Super Rad in my head. This might take days to cure.
How do you pronounce Sufjan? I sat suf-jan. Is that right? Soof-jan? Suf-i-an? |
You know you are old when third wave ska is old skool. ;)
Of course, I'm too young for the 1st wave stuff - although I listened to my share of Desmond Decker. But I was all about Madness, Selector, Specials, The Beat, Bodysnatchers and others crossed over into the Mod scene as well. I saw all of these band in the early 80's except The Specials. I'm not sure how I missed them. Madness was at the Whisky and The Go Go's (with a hefty Belinda) opened for them. Ahhhh youth. |
Wish I could say I've been buying a lot of music, but I simply havent. My most recent purchases have been stuff I've mentioned already...
I'm simply enjoying what I have at the moment. On my iPod is currently Etta James - "I'd Rather Go Blind" Gotta love it! |

I'm thinking of checking out that new album from Anoushka Shankar, Rise.
I also am thinking of downloading the whole album from M.I.A off iTunes. She's a Brit/Sri Lankan rapper. I got the free download, Galang, and it rocks. It's actually being used for a car commercial now. And everyone needs to check out Sinister Dexter! |
I tunes doesn't have sinister dexter! Bad iTunes. (edit: they do now!)
I think you'd like the MIA album. It's a lot of fun and would be great workout music if I worked out. Of the Shankar spawn, I think I still prefer Nora Jones over Anushka Shankar. I'm not sure why she hasn't appealed to me but I haven't "gotten" her yet. What's even funnier is that I get her and Bebel Gilberto confused. I haven't taken the Moulin Rouge soundtrack out of my car CD for over a week. I've been playing the Roxanne Tango on super loud as I swerve down the street. I'm going to get in big trouble very soon. |
I like Barry Manilow...

Sorry I was behind on that.... It is soof-yahn. Oh those wacky musician names!!!! |

Not to brag (I swear!!) but my mom and uncle are actually friends with Etta James. They went to her son's wedding a few months ago. She loves to use my uncle as her bus driver. They told me she is really, really nice. And really funny! I have yet to see her though... :( It always seems like I miss the chance because I have other plans. |
I've been listening to Madonna's new album for the past few weeks.
Can't wait to buy it on Tuesday! ![]() |

Also, 'Christmas Remixed 2' is cool, too. :) |
Wow - last music post in December????
About time for more fun. We did some post-Coachella buying the other day with great results. Lady Tron - New Massive Attack - New Collection Daft Punk - New Collection Gram Rabbit - New Dresden Dolls - New Niko Cast - Latest She Wants Revenge Clap Your Hands Say Yeah We're still working our way through these but, so far, I'm LOVING the Ladytron CD. GREAT sounds. Sort of dancable, industrial, reminds me a bit of Ultravox in John Fox days with female vocals. Gram Rabbit is so wonderful and I can't wait to become more familiar with their second album. It was great upon first listen. Niko Case was a chance buy. But, we listened last night while reading in bed and I love the sound and feel of the album. There's a bit of a solid, old-style country flair but there's a lot more intensity and flavor. I really like it. Daft Punk collection is a GREAT collection of some of their best music. It's a powerful CD meant to be played loud. But, NOTHING will match their spectacular performance at Coachella. But, if you are a fan, you MUST get this CD. More later when we work through more CDs, |
What Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album did you get?
|
Funny timing as I was just perusing iTunes and stumbled onto Richard Cheese. As I type this I am downloading The Sunny Side of the Moon - The Best of Richard Cheese.
Lounge versions of Baby Got Back, Rock the Casbah and Fight for Your Right (to Party) - classic! |
I just bought Keane's Hopes and Fears. I love it.
|
I'm contemplating bying Luther Wright and the Wrongs - Rebuild the Wall.
Oooh! Hayseed Dixie and bluegrass covers of AC/DC and Kiss! |
I love Hayseed Dixie - been mixing them and Hardcore Devo, along with the usual audio assault of The Egg, KISS, and Pink Floyd.
I can't believe it took Kevy Baby so long to discover Richard Cheese - you gotta hear his versions of 'Rape Me' and 'Holiday in Cambodia'. :D |
OMG! Richard Cheese rocks! We *MUST* get "Aperirif for Destruction." "Phil Specter! Do something! (gun shot)"
I just about knocked the laptop off the table in a fit of laughter. That was hysterical! |

I'm currently enjoying a Pink Martini CD (Sympathique) which I had to have after hearing "Que Sera Sera" on Coverville (thank you again, Heidi, for recommending that podcast). And I'm slowly dipping into Volume 2 of the Capitol Beatles album re-releases in order to minimize the impact on my psyche of reliving my childhood. |
I've been listening to a track that has mixed The Doors 'Riders on (of?) the Storm' with Blondie's 'Rapture'. It's wild.
I've also been listening to a lot of Madeleine Peyroux. She's great. I also like Missy Elliott's new one 'We Run This' and LL Cool J's 'Control Myself'. :) |
Quote:
We're big Madeline fans here too. |
Finally got around to buying M.I.A Arular. Love it.

I really want the She Wants Revenge album. I need to work my way through and be happy with the rest of the music I aquired last year. I can't afford a music habit with my hockey habit right now. :( |

I've been enjoying that one as well as the WolfMother cd. {that is on sale, too, a bit of harder rock, read the description, a bit of Black Sabbath meets Robert Plant it is awesome!!!} I picked up the new Tool and PJ. While I enjoy them I DIG the other two, SWR being #1. Actually, I won tickets to the X-Fest concert down here 'cause I want to see SWR. I thought I had seen WolfMother was also going to be there but now I don't see their name on the list. Oh, and is anyone going to see the Foo Fighters accoustic tour? I am jazzed to say I got tickets to that! Missed out on the RHCP tickets 'cause my old computer screwed me. Oh, that is another cd I am enjoying a lot. 'Dani California' is great {the video too} and that cd {it is a dual disc} is my fav so far. |
I really like SWR bt I have always enjoyed that sound. The first time I heard Interpol I was all over them as well.
However, Ian Curtis of Joy Division died MUCH too young, I'm glad there are some new bands that can carry on their sound in the way that New Order should've. |
I've been visiting record store in Chicago:
Le Pop 3 - les chansons de la nouvelle scène françasie Bertrand Burgalat Portrait-Robot Neko Case - The Tigers Have Spoken Stereo Total Juke-Box Alarm Orcehstral Manoeuvers in the Dark - Architecture & Morality Montefiori Cocktail - Raccolta N.2 Women in Lounge - a female vocal excursion in the dreamy land of the Italian movie soundtracks France Gall - Baby Pop April March - Chrominance Decoder Los Amigos Invisibles - New Sounds of the Venezuelan Gozadera Delta 5 - Singles & Sessions 1979-81 |
Oooh! Stereo Total <3 <3
Been listening to a lot of: Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia Gnarles Barkley Flaming Lips - At War With the Mystics Massive Attack - Collected And some other stuff, though a lot of it you can see right on here... vv |

Every time this thread resurrects, I feel like my music choices are not deep enough. :D
I like mindless stuff. 'We Run This' ~ Missy Elliott 'Gimme That' ~ The Resource 'La Tortura' ~ Shakira 'You've Got the Love' ~ The Source ft Candi Station |
I don't know if they're just 15 minutes - it's hard to say.
|
Oh, sh!t, GC - my music choices (which are deep and varying) always feel tiny next to Lisa & Chris.
|
We're just a certain brand of eclectic-fickle ;)
|
I bet you could build a condo with their CD collection.

A friend I have in France recommended the group Indochine to me yesterday.
They are sound so cool, especially the songs Alice et June, and Ladyboy When I hear Alice et June I just want to break into some wicked air guitar. Here's links to the videos of the two songs I like Alice et June Ladyboy Oh and if you think the lead singer's kind of creepy in the Ladyboy video, I kind of agree. It's really good music though. |
I'm putting Jamie Cullum on my iPod right now. Is that considered "swanky tunes"?
|
New stuff I got recently_
chicago XXX - Love it! But you all knew that already. sons of champlin - Hip Little Dreams - Blue Eye'd soul from the Bay area. www.sonsofchamplin.com The Spinners - Best of ... Missed hearing some of the 60's & 70's stuff. Rascal Flatts - Me and my gang --- Got it because the bass player produced Chicago XXX. I was impressed. Some nice stuff on this album. Mostly I've enjoyed the lyrics. |
It's been a few years since Marisa Monte's last solo album - and all of a sudden there are two at once! I am in heaven.
Review pending. |
Last night I was at Goodwill, I often go there to see what kind of cool/crappy/interesting weird things they have.
And I ran into something that I didn't even think twice about buying. I found the LP of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. I'm so proud to own it. |
Finally picked up Dial-A-Song - or, rather, had BT pick it up on his lunch. Tee-hee! Another one falls victim to the TMBG spell.
