Lounge of Tomorrow Soundtrack

What tunes would enhance a swanky joint like this one?
If the LoT had a soundtrack, what would be playing right now?

I'd say, to start off...

"The Look of Love" ~ Dusty Springfield
"The Girl From Ipanema" ~ Astrud Gilberto

:)

€uroMeinke 01-18-2005 09:51 PM

"Underwater Love" ~Smoke City

Great choice!! I really, really LOVE that song!

I'd like to suggest these:

This Guy's In Love - Herb Alpert

Say A Little Prayer - Dionne Warkwick

Moon River - Andy Williams

€uroMeinke 01-18-2005 09:52 PM

(So we need a DJ who can start making LoT mixes like those cool clubs in Paris)

Not Afraid 01-18-2005 09:55 PM

"There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" - the instrumental version (MousePod open his first show with it).

"Crepuscular with Nelly" - Thelonious Monk

"Cry Me a River" - Julie London

"Fever" - Peggy Lee

"Sway" - Dean Martin

Anything by The Propellerheads
Anything by Koop
Some Morcheeba
Some Zero 7
Anything by BallySagoo

You realize I could be doing this all night long, don't you?

So, let's make a mix CD! Hotel Costes, The Standard, Man Ray, and Tantra all have them.

MerryPrankster 01-18-2005 09:59 PM

Some more Peggy:
Is That All There Is - Peggy Lee

Fly Me To The Moon - Frank Sinatra

surfinmuse 01-18-2005 10:01 PM

Anything by Dimitri From Paris!

Gemini Cricket 01-18-2005 10:03 PM

We'll have to add Henry Mancini's title song to 'Charade' also. I think we talked about this one before. It's swanky.

:)

If we're lucky. I'm looking for enlightenment. You're talking to a guy who loves Kylie Minogue (although she did do a song with Nick Cave).
:D

I'm researching these songs as we post. :) Love them, love them!

€uroMeinke 01-18-2005 10:06 PM

Some Sergio Medes and Brasil 66 - maybe The One Note Samba

belleh5 01-18-2005 10:07 PM

Yes, anything by Frank Sinatra, or little Dean Martin?

MerryPrankster 01-18-2005 10:20 PM

I'm such a sucker for the Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs:

Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird) - Chuck Jackson

Walk on By - Dionne Warwick

Most music by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. I love the Charlie Brown Christmas CD:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...15353?v=glance

Not Afraid 01-18-2005 10:21 PM

Voulez-Vous? - Arling & Cameron

Simple Histoire - Thievery Corporation

Comic Strip - Brigitte Bardot

Noorie - Bally Sagoo

On N'A Pas Besoin and Fibre de Verre - Paris Combo (SOOO many others)

Ford Mustang - Serge Gainsbourg

Boogie and Via Con Me - Paolo Conte
Last Tango in Paris - Gotan Project

I concur with ANY Dimitri from Paris

I'd like to throw some Grace Jones in there just to be fun.

Yeah, I'll probably go on with more later.

Gemini Cricket 01-18-2005 10:49 PM

'Beyond the Sea' ~ Bobby Darin or Robbie Williams version from 'Nemo'
'Sway' ~ Dean Martin or Michael Buble (Man, he's cute...)
'My Funny Valentine' ~ Chet Baker
'Besame Mucho' ~ Dean Martin, Diana Krall
'Feelin Good' ~ Nina Simone

Ghoulish Delight 01-18-2005 10:51 PM

Having just watched the Pink Panther, I'd go with the score of that movie.

I'd add "Night & Day" dedicated to those who're on the boards from dusk til dawn!!

Motorboat Cruiser 01-18-2005 11:01 PM

A Night in Tunisia - Charlie Parker

Black Cow - Steely Dan

Pretty much anything by Antonio Carlos Jobim

All of the above were tested while I browsed the boards and were quite appropriate. :)

Not Afraid 01-18-2005 11:02 PM

Jobim, Getz have free reign as far as I'm concerned.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-18-2005 11:07 PM

Where's Flub and Erica when you need 'em? Not to say that you guys aren't doing a proper job. Choosing only a few for an "official" mix cd would be tough.

€uroMeinke 01-18-2005 11:11 PM

Forget mix CD - online DJ, that's what we need

MerryPrankster 01-18-2005 11:47 PM

What's New Pussycat? - Tom Jones

Kiss (cover/with The Art of Noise ) - Tom Jones

Burning Down the House (cover/with The Cardigans) - Tom Jones

Mack The Knife - Bobby Darrin

Blue Velvet - Bobby Vinton

Some very spookyish swanky songs on these soundtracks:

Wild At Heart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Angelo Badalamenti, Various Artists

Twin Peaks (TV Soundtrack) - Angelo Badalamenti

Miserlou - Dick Dale (Crazy surf guitar, cats. I dig it!)

Let's Go Trippin' - Dick Dale

Riders In The Sky - Dick Dale

€uroMeinke 01-18-2005 11:51 PM

Combustible Edison - Vertigogo

wendybeth 01-18-2005 11:58 PM

Good choices all around! I think we need some swanky rock, though. Buddy Holly? Or, from a bit later, Nancy (These Boots Are Made For Walking) Sinatra? I can even think of a few Beatles songs that might qualify.

Ghoulish Delight 01-19-2005 12:00 AM

Definitely some Tom Waits spoken word tracks.

I'm thinking some French YeYe girl rock from the 60's...

Ooooh yeah, "These Boots are Made For Walking"! Go-Go boot swank, I can dig!

I did as well. Possibly from Rubber Soul or Revolver. Pretty swank stuff there.

And for some reason, "She's Come Undone" by The Guess Who keeps popping into my head, as does "The Wind Cries Mary" by Hendrix.

Yeah, I think swanky rock exists.

Jazzman 01-19-2005 04:05 AM

Well, if swank is our need, then we've got to funkifize, so;

Tower of Power - Live. Any track will do.

Also, without some Parliament, P-Funk especially, our hip is flat, pops.

Then, let's see.

Miles and his Birth of the Cool. If those sweet, velvety rich reverberations of auditory deliciousness don't satiate your appetite for swank, then unclog your tone holes my man.

The man himself, my sensei of swank and the supreme savior of cool, my own personal hero John Coltrane. For those listeners only beginning their journey, any track from Giant Steps will slide. But for us true connoisseurs, I'd say Love Supreme. Difficult to take, but the way to enlightenment, even in swank, always is.

And we can't forget the funkiest cat blowin' horn and burnin' vocals today; the one and only Maceo Parker. His live album, it's the rocks baby. Shake Everything You Got. Listen to it, then do it.

We'll have this joint burnin' in no time.

This is one of my very favoritest songs, and it's been in my head pretty much constantly the past few weeks, so it's definitely been running through my head while I'm here in the Lounge.

I looooove The Look of Love! That's sooo this place for me. Thanks!! It's just so perfect!

And What's New Pussycat? Awesome. :)

mousepod 01-19-2005 11:58 AM

What a great list so far! I'd toss in Bobby Darin's "Love Swings" LP (I doubt he or anyone back then got the double entendre), "Natural" by Celso Fonseca for the Jobim fans who need something new, and maybe even a little Tindersticks...

mousepod 01-19-2005 11:59 AM

...and of course Brubeck's "Dave Digs Disney" and the Japanese CD "Readymade Digs Disney"...

Flubber 01-19-2005 12:30 PM

All great choices so far!

I'd add (obvious to me choices):

Dave Brubeck - Take Five
Nat Cole Trio - Hit That Jive Jack
Martin Denny - Quiet Village
Burt Bacharach - The Look Of Love (I think someone mentioned this)
Herb Alpert - The Lonely Bull
Love Unlimited Orchestra - Love's Theme

For giggles: Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good

and I always have to mention these guys:
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (a rejected James Bond Theme)

This list could go on forever!

MerryPrankster 01-19-2005 12:36 PM

I must add some Rosemary. I had the thrill of seeing RC perform before she passsed on. What a cool, happenin' kitten she was...

Hey There - Rosemary Clooney

Mangos - RC

Mambo Italiano - RC

Cabaret (from Cabaret) - Liza Minelli

All That Jazz (from Chicago) - Liza Minelli

Taste of Honey - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

What Now, My Love? - HA & TTB

Casino Royale - HA & TTB

Stray Cat Strut - Stray Cats

Be-Bop-A-Lula - Gene Vincent

Black Coffee In Bed - Squeeze

Cool For Cats - Squeeze

I love the title song that they play during the credits. I believe it was Michael Buble and someone else. Love it.

There are so many great suggestions for songs here, that I can barely keep up my research on them.

What I've learned so far from this thread:

1. Nina Simone is a goddess.
2. Chet Baker was cute when he was young.
3. Dusty Springfield, Astrud Gilberto, Diana Krall and Norah Jones are simply wonderful.
4. Grace Jones is swanky.
5. There's a lot I don't know about Jazz and Lounge music. :D

:)

Ghoulish Delight 01-20-2005 12:34 PM

Anyone mention Ella yet? No? Well, the soundtrack definitely wouldn't be complete without Ella Fitzgerald.

Motorboat Cruiser 01-21-2005 02:07 AM

I don't know if anyone has heard any of the early music by Jamiroquai, but some of it is darn swanky. Very retro and groovy. I think it would fit in nicely.

Oh, and lots and lots of Miles...

blueerica 01-21-2005 02:13 AM

How did I miss this WHOLE thread?!?!?!

Anyhow, I'm going to start consulting with Flub on some broadcasting abilities, and HEY -- I know some people here might also know a bit about broadcasting music over the internet.

I'm looking at some preliminary options at the moment, but it looks like hosting music in the fashion i dream of is quite expensive.

PM me if you have experience with this, I'd greatly appreciate it!

blueerica 01-21-2005 02:14 AM

Oh, and why has no one mention Koop?

Or Southern Culture on the Skids?

Or OMG -- There are too many to list!!!

For the LoT Soundtrack, IMHO, you really can't go wrong with Bossa Nova vibes, and Jazz-fusion influences...

Driving last night, listening to the radio and....

Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton
These guys were swank before there was swank

Gary U.S. Bonds - New Orleans
I just dig this song. Some of the early soul/rock and roll stuff is the coolest.

Barbara Lewis - Hello Stranger
This song makes me want to curl up with my kitten and sip 'tinis.

I've heard that version as well. It's wonderful.

I also heard a version from my friend Julie where the singer sounds like she's underwater. Not that she sounds like she's gargling or anything, but that it sounds like water and bubbles around her as she sings. Really trippy.
