With Disney's acquisition of Pixar, Pixar President Ed Catmull was named President of the new Pixar and Disney animation studios and Pixar Executive Vice President John Lasseter is the new Chief Creative Office of the animation studios, as well as Principal Creative Advisor at Walt Disney Imagineering.

According to a poster at Animation Nation, Catmull and Lasseter "announced to Feature Animation employees [Tuesday] that the 'Toy Story 3' production will end effectively [Tuesday]. They said that sequels should only be made if there is a really great story that demands it, and should be the domain of those who created the original film."

An Associated Press article from Tuesday about the acquisition confirms the news:

One immediate sign of Lasseter's influence is that plans for Disney to make the long rumored sequel "Toy Story 3" on its own have been scrapped. If the film is made, it will be done by Lasseter and the other creators of the original film, the companies said.

Bradley Raymond was announced as the director of Toy Story 3, which was scheduled to open in 2008. In the film, Buzz Lightyear would have been recalled to Taiwan after a series of malfunctions. Learning of a productwide recall, all the toys in Andy's room, under Woody's leadership, were to head to Taiwan to save Buzz from doom.

Oh bloody hell, best news ever!

Best quote ever and it is music to my ears.

Too bad it's too late for poor Bambi...(sob)

Isaac 01-26-2006 12:57 AM

But is it too late for the other sequels already in animation ?
(ex: Fox And The Hound 2, Aristocats 2, Cinderella 3, The Little Mermaid 3 , Lilo & Stitch 3 )

Gn2Dlnd 01-26-2006 04:24 AM

101 Damnations!

This is good news. The story they had in mind for TS3 didn't sound too good. It sounded like TS2 but replacing kidnapped Woody with recalled Buzz.

Sounds like good things are happening. :)

Man, that's great news. But I doubt that it will have much of an effect on the Disney cheapquels in production. The way the statement was worded: "the domain of those who created the original film," it sounds like the Pixar creative team is taking back its property and nothing more. The first half of the statement does bode well for the future of Disney's attitude, assuming Lasseter gets the leeway we all hope he gets - but I still think I'll be saving a lot of money by not buying a big pile of Disney DVDs in the next year or two.

Can I be cautiously optimistic now? :D

I'm glad I hadn't heard the "plot" before I found out it was cancelled. Recalled toys? What kid knows about those?

Really. It would be like making a movie for kids that deals with trade disputes and political infighting..

wendybeth 01-31-2006 01:14 PM

Anyone else think that Andy's mom needs to clean his room and update some of them toys?

Jim Hill has a great article today about what John Lassitter did in one day at both Feature Animation and WDI. I know many here don't beleive Jim most of the time, but I have known him for years and usually what he prints is on the mark. This article is very interesting and worth reading.

Fab sent me a tiny preview of this yesterday. It does seem VERY compelling.

It's a nice dream if it's true.

I found the idea of attractions and movies coming out together rather interesting. Since I don't think they can make new attractions as quickly as movies, it seems this will usher in the era of the ride re-themeing. Like the example of Autopia being themed to cars. What other attractions might that happen to? What if the movie sucks?

I'm okay with that risk. With greater risk comes greater reward. Remember, Sleeping Beauty Castle was built before the movie came out! I would hope that having the capitol invested in an attraction (or attraction re-theme) will translate into motivation for the studio to ensure that they put out something that doesn't stuck (especially with the same person at the helm of both putting his ass on the line).

I think that a good attraction is a good attraction whether the movie it's tied to is a classic, a flash in the pan, or even crapola.

When I'm at Disneyland, I love the "Third Man on the Mountain" ride.

tracilicious 02-08-2006 12:28 AM

At the risk of sounding non-geeky, you love the what ride?

Exactly...the Matterhorn was built as a tie-in for this movie, which was a total flop. But clearly the popularity and quality of the movie had little baring on the popularity and qualiyt of the ride.

No, I actually knew that.

Not that I know squat about the movie itself, other than it was a movie that took place on, or near, the Matterhorn.

innerSpaceman 02-08-2006 12:03 PM

Which was called The Citadel in the film, but I geekily digress.

OMG! I actually loved that movie. I didn't remember it until I saw the pic, but I saw it as a kid and thought it was great. I'm going to have to buy it now.

innerSpaceman 02-08-2006 05:55 PM

Um, good luck finding it.

(I have a rare laserdisc copy, but I don't think it was ever released on eitehr VHS or DVD.)

Cadaverous Pallor 02-08-2006 06:40 PM

Oops, sorry for the dig, my wonderfully geeky husband. I did not know that.

mousepod 02-08-2006 06:49 PM

Third Man On the Mountain is actually back in print! It was released on DVD late '04.
