March 26: Sonic Scenery @ Natural History Museum
 

I've been wanting to go to the LA Natural History Museum for a while now. It's been literally AGES since I've been. Then I heard about the new "take" on their exhibits - Sonic Scenery. THis sounds AWSOME!

What a great way to experience something new in an old, familiar space. It's sort of like the NHM Remixed.

How bout Saturdays ... either March 11, 18 or 25?

The 18th works for me. The 11th we are seeing Swan Lake in the PM, so that might work. The 25th is out.

Anytime in March is cool with us!

The show starts at 8 at the Ahmonson. So, daytime on the 11th would be cool.

I'm gonna let this be your call, babe. If you'd like to hit two things downtown on the 11th, with maybe a spot of dinner in between, I am totally all for it (since, heheh, I'd only have to hit one of them).

Otherwise, pick a Sunday in March or a weekend in April .... but keep in mind that we're in need of a Swanking in March.

Remember the Minimalist Music thing starts at Midnight - so we could do something that night, get a few tripple espressos and rock on...

Frankly, though it would work better for my schedule, I wouldn't recommend doing SonicScenery/Natch History Museum and then taking a scant few hours off before overnite raving Minimalist. Not unless you've got serious psychedelic/speed combo drugs (in which case, you would have to explain why you've been holding out on me).

Far better would be the Natch History/SonicScenery - Swan Lake/Ahmanson combo. I mean logisticwise and sleep deprivation wise.



Culturally speaking, both combos would work well. One of them requires you to be 23 years old again, and the other doesn't.

Sounds quite tempting. I might just have to do that. 11 might be a touch early for us coming from my place...but I will talk it over with the blonde and see if she is interested in joining, perhaps a bit later though.

Well, we're flexable. If we want to go later to accommodate the Shirt and the Blond, we can. But, otherwise, 11 works for us.

Bad service aside...quite an enjoyable day indeed. And those were some tasty fries.

So, the museum was great! Some of the musical compositions were a wonderful accompaniment to the exhibitions others were only so so. But, it was still great to visit a museum I haven't visited in probably 30 years (or more!).

We also got the see the brand new exhibit "They Mysterious Bog People" which was fun and kept us occupied until NirvanaMan and Babette arrived.

Afterwards, we shot over to Downtown to Pete's Cafe and Bar for some incredible fries with Blue Cheese and Bacon Cheddar (2 different orders) and dinner. All of the food was great except ISM's which was sadly bland - even after they took it back and re-worked it. Unfortunately, they restaurant was more crowded than usual and our service was TERRIBLE! You think after asking for a glass of water 4 times they'd bring some? Not the case. Anyways, that was really the only bald spot on a wonderful day.

If you get a chance to see the exhibition before it closes in early May, do so.

And, I'll be posting about our April and May swankings tomorrow!

Even with the poor service, the check rip-offs, the order errors, and my horrible entree ... I'd be willing to repeat Pete's for the bleu cheese fries and the cheese fries that were good even without swankhood, but were even better once we demanded our rightful Bacon.

Unfortunately, it's in downtown L.A. And you will likely NEVER find me in that area of town again.

I loved visiting the Natural History Museum again. It's been far too long. I love the cool dioramas of North American and African wildlife. And I could stay in the crystals and gems exhibit all day long. The musical accompanyment added a very fun element, even though it had some kinks.

The brand new Bog People exhibit and the Tarantula Time fun with spiders, scorpians, cockroaches and crickets were also great surprises.


Speaking of crickets ... Jiminy Crickets, that is ... are we too damned geeky for noticing all the Disneyland similarities in our tour of the museum?

There was the turn-of-the-century America exhibit of artifacts and vehicles that was pure Main Street, U.S.A. and Carousel of Progress. What were all those dinosaurs if not Primeval World? There was even a bit of Grand Canyon diorama in the North American wildlife dioramas, which was otherwise - along with the Native American exhibit - 100% Frontierland. The African wildlife dioramas across the way were quintessential Adventureland. The minerals exhibit was also very Frontierland, with a huge crystal ball that was decidedly Haunted Mansion.

Well, I ALMOST forgot about that part.

I actually loved the tarantula and I even touched his belly, but when the scorpian came out of the box, I was not too comfortable. The cockroaches wern't too thilling to me either. The communical OOOOOHHHHHHHH when the trantula attacked the cricket was, however, priceless. But, none the less, I'm gladd I read that little bit of wall copy about the time.

Not too comfortable? That is the understatement of the day. Your screams were terrifying the otherwise calm and interested children.

It was awesome.
