The Song Tapper!

I am completely blown away by this thing!

http://songtapper.com/s/tappingmain.bin

Go to the site. Think of a song. Tap your spacebar to the rhythm of the lyrics of that song. And this thing tells you what song you're thinking of (it lists 10 possibilities).

I've done 4 songs so far:

Happy Birthday - gave it as the first option

Birthday by the Beatles - gave it as the second option (behind born to be wild)

Insanity by Boingo - First option

and the only one that it missed, Boonga by Fred Schneider (if it got that, I'd have already bought 1000 shares of stock in this company if it were possible). But the nifty thing is, if you get it wrong, you just tell it what song it was, and it adds it to the database.

Oh my, this could get veeeery addicting.

Gemini Cricket 02-17-2006 04:17 PM

I tried 'Paperback Writer' and 'My HUmps' and it got both.
But it couldn't get 'Ballad of John and Yoko' and 'Lose My Breath' by Destiny's Child.
:)

Ghoulish Delight 02-17-2006 04:18 PM

I'm finding the wrong answers are almost as much fun as the right answers.

Like, I tried Master of the House from Les Mis, and it came up with Smooth Criminal.

Prudence 02-17-2006 04:20 PM

Alas, it did not discover the Russian folksong that's been in my head all day.

katiesue 02-17-2006 04:42 PM

I must not be a very good tapper cause I'm not getting close on anything. I told my mother all those years of forced paino lessons were for naught.

Ghoulish Delight 02-17-2006 04:53 PM

Hehe, I did Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. It didn't get it, but it did guess Don't Stand So Close to Me by the Police. Which is amusing because it's the exact same song (Sting wrote Money for Nothing for Dire Straits).

Motorboat Cruiser 02-17-2006 05:12 PM

I had a little time so I figured I would see what this baby could do.

::rolls up sleeves::

My Funny Valentine (standard) - Nope
You Make Me Feel Like Dancing (Leo Sayer)- Nope
Norweigan Wood (Beatles) - #2 on List
Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire (Bach) - Nope
Walk This Way (Aerosmith) - Nope
Rock you Like a Hurricane (Scorpions) - Nope
Facts of Life theme - Nope
Yo Ho Ho Ho, A Pirates Life For Me - Nope
This Masquerade (George Benson) - Nope
One Note Samba (Standard) - Nope
It's a Small World (Sherman Bros)- YES! #1
Smack My Bitch Up (Prodigy) - (not enough clicks)
We Will Rock You (Queen) - #1
My Cherie Amor (Stevie Wonder) - Nope
Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley) - Nope
Fields of Gold (Sting) - #7
Take Five (Dave Brubeck) - Verse - Nope! (*see below") Chorus - Nope
Christmas Time is Here (Vince Gauraldi) - Nope
Ruby Tuesday (Rolling Stones) - Nope
I Got You Babe (Sonny and Cher) - Nope

Overall thoughts: Well, a 20% success rate was a bit disappointing but then again, it did quite well on simple, easily recognizable melodies. Melodies that were a little more complex gave me some pretty funny but inaccurate results.

Still, it's a pretty cool idea.

* Gave me: "I wanna F*** a Dog in the A**" by Blink 182

Ghoulish Delight 02-17-2006 05:17 PM

Since you can add stuff to its knowledge base, the more it gets used, in theory, the better it should get. I'll happily keep a-tappin' and adding stuff for the benefit of all humankind.

Ghoulish Delight 02-17-2006 05:20 PM

Well, it was #8 on the list...but it did get I like Traffic Lights by Monty Python. :D

Another site at which to waste away hours. Thanks--this is pretty cool.

Matterhorn Fan 02-20-2006 05:13 PM

I'm shocked and appalled that it doesn't already know El Rio del Tiempo.

I'm shocked and appalled that there are lyrics to El Rio del Tiempo.

Moonliner 02-20-2006 05:21 PM

I tried "Can you feel the love tonight" from Lion King. It suggested "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Apparently I am just as tap-def as I am tone-def. :(

Stan4dSteph 02-20-2006 05:32 PM

It did not guess "Salty Dog" by Flogging Molly.

tracilicious 02-20-2006 09:31 PM

We tried to tap out a bunch that it didn't recognize, but said it had in it's database. I think I was tapping wrong. Michael had more success than I did.

wendybeth 02-20-2006 10:51 PM

It got 'Ode to Joy' right, but thought 'Holiday' was 'St. Jimmy'- same group, different song. Also thought 'Train in Vain' was 'I like Traffic Lights'....

Of course, I could just really suck at this tapping thing.

How the Song Tapper solved a 4 year old question of mine...

In 2002, on MP, I posted a thread about this song that was in my head that I couldn't figure out. It has no lyrics, was hard to look up on the internet etc.
Quote:

I must find out the name of this song:

1. It was in the Bette Midler, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis movie "Drowning Mona" (but not on the CD soundtrack) and a couple of TV commercials.

2. It's instrumental.

3. It sounds like it's from a video game or something.

That's all I can tell you...
Anyone?

I just figured it out on Song Tapper. :D

It's called 'Popcorn' by Hot Butter.

Mystery solved.

Ghoulish Delight 02-21-2006 09:12 AM

God bless the internet.

mousepod 02-21-2006 09:24 AM

...and to bring it all back to Disney, "Popcorn" was written by Gershon Kingsley, who co-wrote "Baroque Hoedown," which is of course the basis for the MSEP music.

Amazing, says I.
:)

I have a 45 of Popcorn that I've had since I was about 7.

Come to Florida, and we can have a sing-a-long ride-thru.

The lyrics are quite profound.
