What is a "spider"?

I sometimes glance at who is online, and there is usually a "spider" present - specifically "MSNBot spider" or "Yahoo! slurp spider".

What exactly are these?

Ghoulish Delight 03-13-2006 10:22 AM

They are automated programs that load and scan webpages so they can index them for the various search engines. They also suck blood.

scaeagles 03-13-2006 10:24 AM

Got it. Thanks.

I typically refer to my mother in law as a "vampire", not a "spider", though.

Much like your typical right-wing conservative. :)

At the time of this posting there were 9 slurp spiders on LoT. Someone call Rid-A-Bug!
:D

Moonliner 03-22-2006 09:00 AM

I for one welcome our new spider overlords.

Tell me, how can a search spider register? I looked at "Who's Online" just now and a Yahoo Slurp Spider was "Registering".
Weird.

Weird.

It just means it browsed to the registration page. It won't be able to actually register.

Weird.

Well, it could be very smart and use 2 of its 8 legs to type.

Why ? What have you got against slurpy arachnids ?

Hehehehe.. does anyone else find the word "slurp" funny ? What is a "Slurp" spider? Sounds like a sugary drink from a quicky-mart.

Not Afraid 07-28-2006 06:54 PM

Thanks. I'm singing "itsy bitsy spider".

I more picture something from a horror flick that is going to paralyze you and slurp out your guts.

wendybeth 07-28-2006 10:17 PM

It really tripped me out when I saw Google Spider e-mailing me. Never got it, though. Wonder what it wanted? Never mind- not sure I want to know.

Gemini Cricket 08-01-2006 10:15 AM

If a slurp spider views this thread about spiders, will it implode causing a black hole?

Matterhorn Fan 08-01-2006 03:36 PM

That must be some special mod spider x-ray vision you've got there. I can only see the spiders "viewing user profile." It never says whose.

Ooops- you're not even supposed to be seeing that. It should say "none of your non-moderating ass's beeswax" or "nothing to see here; move along".
;):p

Matterhorn Fan 08-01-2006 05:03 PM

AHA! I may not have this special LoT button, but I have near-moderator spider x-ray vision!

I knew there was something that made me more equal than the other non-mods here. :p

wendybeth 08-01-2006 05:09 PM

(I don't even have a button....)

:(

lashbear 08-01-2006 07:19 PM

I have this button marked "Slurp" - what does that do ?

wendybeth 08-01-2006 07:45 PM

Push it and a Google Slurp Spider pops out and gives ya a big sloppy kiss.
Try it!

lashbear 08-01-2006 08:41 PM

Ewwwwww... now I have spider eggs in my saliva glands.

Gemini Cricket 08-01-2006 09:15 PM

Aha! I just caught the Yahoo Slurp Spider looking at this thread. Implosion is imminent. Black hole cometh.
:D

Wait, the thing can Slurp itself? Damn, now I'm jealous of a spider.

I really need to not open the LoT at work tomorrow

I went to Who's Online and a Google Spider was "Adding a Quote". I thought that was funny.

Was it adding "All your quotes are belong to us" ?

Not sure.
I was thinking it was going to say, "One of us. On one of us..."
:D

wendybeth 02-07-2007 04:50 PM

We did have one that looked like spam that I deleted- wonder if a spidey left it?;)

Ghoulish Delight 02-07-2007 05:12 PM

Hmm, I should check the permission settings and see if I can prevent that.

lashbear 02-07-2007 06:04 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!

The Spiders slurped all my quotes - there's only two left !!
