The "Nobody cares because it's about golf but I'm starting the thread anyway" thread.

Davis Love's scorecard after two days at The Players Championship:

65-83

From leading the tournament after one round to missing the cut and not playing the weekend. Shocking.

Kevy Baby 03-25-2006 09:02 AM

Quote:

Leaving: Davis Love III shot 83, becoming the first player in tournament history to go from a share of the lead to missing the cut. His 18-stroke differential (after opening with 65) tied a tournament record.
He must be proud of his new record.

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2006 09:19 AM

Yowza, that's some fine chokeage.

scaeagles 03-25-2006 09:25 AM

I read about that this morning....ouch.

Sac, the Masters coming up soon. You must be in golf heaven.

Kevy Baby 03-25-2006 11:54 PM

How is Tiger doing? I heard that he might be distracted because his Dad is ill.

Not Afraid 03-26-2006 12:22 AM

Hey, I clicked.

I wanted to see what nobody was caring about these days.

Yeah, coming in two weeks. It's the unofficial start of spring, baby.

wendybeth, I tried to warn you with the thread title.

SacTown Chronic 04-06-2006 06:53 AM

SacTown sez:

Last year Phil put a green jacket on Tiger, this year Tiger will put one on Phil. It's always risky going against Tiger (especially in the tournament he was raised to win) but Phil is at the top of his game right now. Tiger does have the extra motivation of his dad's failing health to drive him right now. Nobody knows how long his dad has left and I'm sure Tiger would love for his pops to see him win one more Masters. I'm hoping we get a Tiger/Phil final group pairing on Sunday.

I'm just so excited!

scaeagles 04-06-2006 06:59 AM

I can't cheer for Phil. He won by a ton at....was it the Bell South this past weekend?.....but I think he gacks. I think he's made a tactical mistake already, being that he is packing 2 drivers. Why pack 2 drivers? I guess he says one is better for a fade and one is better for a draw, but if you are golfing at that level, you should be able to control those with one driver, right? We'll see. Hell, I can't control ANY golf shot, so what do I know?

SacTown Chronic 04-06-2006 07:07 AM

Of course he gacks....if he didn't he'd be like a 6 time major winner by now.

As for the drivers, I don't think it's a tactical mistake....he usually has three or four wedges in his bag so I don't think it'll hurt him to have one more driver and one less wedge. Besides, maybe he's planning on breaking a driver during the tournament for dramatic effect or something.

scaeagles 04-06-2006 07:09 AM

I meant I specfically think he'll gack at this Masters. His history of gackdom is legend in his hometown of Phoenix.

I once threw my driver in a lake, but I've never broken one for dramatic effect.

SacTown Chronic 04-06-2006 07:12 AM

My brother once tried to throw his putter in a lake after missing a short putt but he missed the water completely.:D

Gemini Cricket 04-06-2006 07:43 AM

My jaw just locked from yawning so much.

:D

My dad asked me to golf with him sometime. Seconds later, he said, 'Don't roll your eyes.' We were on the phone. Sometimes a father knows stuff.
:D

Golf is like an Easter Parade for tacky pants.

Really? I should take it as a compliment since it's my understanding that it takes a lot to tire your jaw, ifyaknowwhatImean.

And it took the right kind of guy to make me lose my gag reflex, too.

SacTown Chronic 04-07-2006 08:26 PM

I wasn't being entirely fair when I said Mickelson has gacked away about four majors. David Toms ripped his heart out with a clutch up and down on the 18th hole in Atlanta at the PGA and the late Payne Stewart hit an unbelievable birdie putt to avoid a playoff with Mickelson at the US Open at Pinehurst #2. So not all of Mickelson's major heartbreak has been his fault. But he does own most of it.

The leaderboard going into the weekend at the Masters is stellar. It's a nice bonus to see sexy smooth Freddie Couples in contention. Should be a great weekend at Augusta.

You're a trooper.

scaeagles 04-09-2006 12:19 PM

I would figure that with the rain yesterday requiring that the leaders play almost two full rounds today that Tiger has the advantage, primarily because he is in much better physical shape than is Phil.

And in looking at how Tiger has started today (now one shot off the lead with a 10 ft or so birdie putt on #3), I think I may be right. I'll reserve total judgement until I see Phil on the 575 yard number 2.

Tiger just missed the 10 ft birdie putt, but my analysis is not changing.

scaeagles 04-09-2006 05:59 PM

I bow to your golf prognostication skills, Sac the Greek.

SacTown Chronic 04-10-2006 08:45 AM

The joke on tour is that Amy Mickelson's smile is real but her boobs are fake and Phil's smile is fake but his boobs are real.:D

scaeagles 04-10-2006 09:08 AM

What I was amazed by is exactly how wrong I was. Phil was the only one who didn't choke.

Tiger 3 putted 6 holes? I've never seen his irons more inaccurate in that he was almost never on the correct part of the green. Couples missed more putts under 4 feet than I've ever seen anyone miss.

Alex 04-10-2006 09:17 AM

I don't know why I don't like Phil Mickelson, but I don't. I just look at the guy and I have a vague dislike. But he can play golf.

Tiger three-putted twice when he had eagle opportunities within 10 feet (according to the radio I listed to on the drive home yesterday, didn't see it myself) so it sounds like it was more the putter than the irons that left him out of it. There aren't many golfers that could 3-putt six times and still put up a -2.

I've always like Fred Couples and it is good to see him playing top golf again, for however long it lasts.

That's true, and I mentioned his putting as being the biggest aspect to his second place finish.

I was thinking more of the par 3s. He was absolutely aweful on par threes for the whole tourney.

SacTown Chronic 08-18-2006 08:06 AM

So Tiger and Phil shared a 69 at at the PGA yesterday, eh? Good for them.

SacTown Chronic 08-18-2006 08:20 AM

Yes, it was quite scandalous.

Alex 08-18-2006 09:39 AM

Especially since Ogilvy also joined in the 69 so it was a 69 threesome. A new chapter was added to the Kama Sutra.

I don't know about golf - but I play a mean game of 'hit n giggle'.

I nearly made par one time !

I think I would be better at it if I had a proper set of golf bats. The bats I'm using at the moment are really old ones inherited from my mum and they're a little short for me.

Who won the British Open at Carnoustie the year ('99) Jean Van de Velde put on an epic display of spitting-the-bit? That's what I thought. But every golf fan remembers what Van de Velde did. Watching his horrifying meltdown on the 72nd hole of the Open was the most surreal experience I've had as a sports fan. The official engraver already had Van de Velde's name etched on the Claret Jug, ferchrissake.

But I also remember the extremely clutch up-and-down he made from the sand to get into the four hole playoff at the end of that horrifying 18th hole. It's not discussed very often by golf fans, but Van de Velde's ability to compose himself and focus on getting that ball into the hole in two shots from the sand trap knowing he had just pissed away the British Open was nothing short of amazing.

So here's to you, crazy fvcking Frenchman. You will be missed this week.

Paul Lawrie, who seemed embarrassed, beating Van de Velde and Justin Leonard, who seemed pissed to be dragged out of the clubhouse to lose again.

Ditto. The stupid ending of Tin Cup was nothing compared to this.

SacTown Chronic 07-20-2007 09:18 AM

Eww, the BBC (I assume the BBC is still supplying the feed for the British) had a crowd shot of a 60-something woman giving a 60-something man some sort of prostate exam right on the golf course. Eww.

Sergio wire to wire? Er, no.

Then again, the long putter is a great equalizer for guys who have no balls the yips. Maybe Sergio can, uh, no.

Ghoulish Delight 07-22-2007 02:20 PM

Sergio's going to be seeing that putt in his nightmares for a loooooong time.

Alex 07-22-2007 02:24 PM

Yeah, but at least he has the comfort of knowing that the putt only mattered in the first place because Harrington fubared first.

I have to say I like that format of playoff. Quite an improvement over immediate sudden death and yet not delayed (and therefore too much trouble to pay attention too) like the tournaments that do a full round playoff the next day.

SacTown Chronic 07-23-2007 10:47 AM

That was fun. Too bad Romero missed out on the playoff....his wild round was the highlight of the tournament.
