PETA protest

It isn't that I find this offensive....I just find it stupid. Is this going to convince anyone to stop eating meat?

PETA crucifixion

Basically, three guys in animal masks will be hung on crosses.

The slogan of the protest action would be "We suffer and die for your sins of nourishment."

To each their own.

Gemini Cricket 04-14-2006 07:46 AM

They sure know how to get press exposure... Oy.

Not Afraid 04-14-2006 07:51 AM

One day they'll wake up a realize that their methods are anything BUT effective.

Gemini Cricket 04-14-2006 07:58 AM

I think the only way they are effective is that people usually end up talking about what they did for their latest protest. But that doesn't mean people are agreeing with them. It just means that they can inspire discussion... like now.
:D

Not Afraid 04-14-2006 08:00 AM

But, it doesn't inspire me not to eat meat - and I'm an animal lover (and eater). So, what is their point?

Nephythys 04-14-2006 08:04 AM

PETA is performance art.

naked people in giant meat packages?

This cross stunt?

Naked people in general?

It's a bunch of out of work performance artists with a desire to show their naked bodies off?

That's what I mean. Their tactics are outdoing their message. I don't know what their point is. Maybe that they take their beliefs as seriously as Christians do (especially during this week)? I don't know.

Nephythys 04-14-2006 08:14 AM

I'm Christian- I don't feel the need to hang myself from anything to show my convictions.

Actually, I think PETA is reasonably effective. They are the fringe leader but drag a lot in their wake. Over the last 30 years the animal rights movement has made a lot of progress. Not so much directly because of PETA but because of other groups who would be stuck with the fringe label if it weren't PETA. So for the movement, I'd say they play an important role.

They make other groups that would seem radical and fringe seem more like a reasonable compromise. Kind of like the congressman who calls for impeachment knowing it will make the call for censure by his colleague more palatable.

But we'll know they're serious when they do a billboard that depicts a pig as Mohammed, saying to the other animals "I told you you should make nice to the man."

€uroMeinke 04-14-2006 08:58 AM

What's wrong with naked people and performance art? I'd support more causes that employeed these tactics.

I actually view more radical groups such as....crud....there's a group that runs around blowing up labs and setting lab rats free. Can't think of their name, but they were active in Flagstaff, AZ, vandalizing a WL Gore medical facility.....anyway, they are the ones on the far fringe, not PETA with the Golden Girls lady on TV holding the cute bunny.

I feel this way about abortion protesters, too. I think groups like operation rescue with Randall Terry have the exact opposite effect that they are trying to have. While they are not as extreme as individuals like Eric Rudolf who blow up clinics, the point remains.

So with PETA doing ridiculous things like this, it makes the movement look ridiculous regardless of where on the spectrum a group or individual falls, from total kook to someone who wants to stop the way veal is produced.

I made no judgement calls, just an observation.

alphabassettgrrl 04-14-2006 10:25 AM

They delayed Ralphie from moving into his laboratory in August '05. The ALF burned down a lab space that used lab mice. The crew that was supposed to renovate his lab had to repair the burned out lab. Stupid bastards.

Isn't Mary Carey a self-identified Republican? She does what I like to think of as performance art.
