I quit my job today.

Terrified. Exhilarated.

I will miss having insurance.
I will not miss the insurance industry.

I will miss one or two coworkers.
I will not miss the remainder of the people at either company I work with... in-the-box automatons who imply that I'm the one who's square because I stepped out of the box long ago.

I will miss the paycheck.
I will not miss the boss who deals it out while never listening to a thing I've ever said to prevent horrible problems that inevitably blow us out of the water because she refuses to have foresight or listen to mine.

I have some freelancing to fall back on. And I have more jobs to which I must apply. This is aggravating but hopefully it will introduce me to a company that both offers a modicum of respect and uses more of my alinear skills. My brain is a web, and I want to spread it wider, not mash it into a line in order to fit into a machine.

Terrified. Exhilarated.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

I'm so proud of you for making this leap. It will all work out and be MUCH better than before. At the worst, it will be different, which is still good.

You GO!

You've way too much talent to let waste at your former employer - I'm sure there are plenty who appreciate your skills, including yourself , who will spur you to greatness.

Way to go! I'm so pleased, I think I will quit one of my several jobs tomorrow! (Okay I was going to anyway.)

You are entering a scary but exhilirating place. May good fortune walk you to your next non-cubicle.

We should form a support group!

innerSpaceman 04-18-2006 08:04 PM

Wow, color me impressed.

Let yourself feel fear ... for all of two hours. Then shut that sh!t down and go out there ... get yourself a position that you deserve, and that deserves you!

Best of luck, sweetie. It's gonna be soooo much better.

Thank you all so much for your support!

An anecdote from my day really made me feel like I'd made the right decision.

I was explaining to some of the people who worked for my client that I was leaving so that would no longer be the liaison for my company (to do some freelance writing-- that's all I'm telling them.)

One woman among this group said "Oh, yeah! (Her coworker) told me you were a writer! I was telling her that I can never understand what you're saying because you use such big words, and she said it was 'cause you were a writer."

I think it's a prerequisite to be of subpar intelligence to work at my client's office. I will have to be there another month, but then it's off to find people who occasionally use words that have greater than five letters.

lindyhop 04-19-2006 07:20 PM

Congratulations! And good luck finding the job you deserve.

blueerica 04-19-2006 07:24 PM

LSPE!

Congratulations... I know you're gonna do great!

(Interesting comment about the big words thing - I got one the other day, and was perplexed... We talk in big words here, I talk in big words with my friends... It's kind of strange to imagine a world where there are fewer words to choose from. Anyhow... (Why do I feel like a snotty B!tch right now?))

You know, it is one thing to be pedantic and quite another to utilize the vacabulary freely available to you.

Drince88 04-19-2006 07:53 PM

That story so illustrated that you made the right decision!

'Grats on making a big jump!

tracilicious 04-20-2006 08:11 AM

Good for you! Sounds like a good reason for you to come see me at DL next week! ;)

My Motto: Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.

Congrats on getting out of a sucky job! I think there's something about working in insurance that drains your brain.

On to the next, better job! :)
