May Swanking - The Puka Bar - May 6

Well, this is being thrown together at the moment, but it will sort of look like this:

Saturday May 6th

Early Evening: Hawaiian BBQ and Some Tiki Viewable at the Lounge of Swank (ie: our house)

When we're good a ready: Walk up to the Puka Bar for Tiki atmosphere and libations.

There are several BD's in May and I think we should toast the Birthday people who happen to drop in.

I'll get more details together after Coachella.

Oh, I guess I need to know who's going to be there - at least at our house. Puka Bar is a free for all.

CoasterMatt 04-25-2006 08:15 PM

I'll be in another part of the county that weekend... :(

Cadaverous Pallor 04-25-2006 08:34 PM

Us birthday people will be there. :tiki:

NirvanaMan 04-25-2006 08:52 PM

Something witty.

JWBear 04-25-2006 09:00 PM

Bill and I were planning on going to the LA Modern Show in Santa Monica that weekend. I'm not sure yet which day we're going.

NirvanaMan 04-25-2006 09:08 PM

Can't wait to see all them hot chix in coconut bras (and out) at the Tiki bar, so I'm in.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 04-25-2006 10:03 PM

Yeah, lots of great birthdays in May. Hmmmmm.....lalalalalalala ;)

Isaac 04-26-2006 01:18 AM

I'm off that day.

Count me in. :)

LSPoorEeyorick 04-26-2006 05:45 AM

We will do our best to join in. I'll know more at a later date.

Not Afraid 04-26-2006 08:35 AM

I keept reading the thread destination at the PUKE Bar.

And we wonder why you make so many typos.

BarTopDancer 04-26-2006 08:55 AM

Put this birthday girl down as a maybe. I'll know more next week.

innerSpaceman 04-26-2006 02:29 PM

Well, I'm there for the Puka Bar or Puke Bar, but I won't be able to make it the Hawaiian BBQ.

Sure will be nice to see my boyfriend again.

Though I'm quite fond of the rest of you, too.

JWBear 04-27-2006 08:47 PM

Bill and I will be coming... to the party, that is.

blueerica 04-27-2006 11:13 PM

I am so sad that I already made plans long ago to be out of town that weekend... I will make something happen sometime. I miss hanging with you folks!

NirvanaMan 04-27-2006 11:48 PM

Admit it, you hate us. You really do. And you beat puppies with sticks. And use babies to wax your car.

blueerica 04-28-2006 09:33 AM

OK! Fine! You know I hate you all!

HMPF.... /weep

Not Afraid 05-03-2006 07:21 PM

OK. Here's the deal. We're gonna do Puka Bar on Saturday.

:tiki: Meet at Our House around 7:00 for Hawaiian BBQ and Tahitian Special.
:tiki: Then, around 9:00 it's off on foot to the Puka Bar
:tiki: Afterwards, we can come back and watch something appropriately festive, although I have no idea what yet. (Help!)

If you need directions to our place, PM me and I will provide.

LSPoorEeyorick 05-04-2006 05:56 AM

Can we bring anything? I've been practicing a mean Blood Orange Cupcake...

Not Afraid 05-04-2006 08:28 AM

Oooh! Blood Orange Cupcakes sound divine!

I may "try" a pineapple upside down cake just because it sounds so good to me - but I'm not much of a baker.

The other thing we're missing is tropical fruit of some sort.

BarTopDancer 05-04-2006 08:40 AM

I hate to be non-commital but I am a solid maybe. I now have playoff games on Friday and Sunday, and somewhere in there I have to write two papers.

Not Afraid 05-05-2006 11:04 PM

Bump - or should I say Hula?

I've got this as the list:

JW Bear and Guy
Babette and NM
LSp...and Tom
GD and CP
Zap and ISM (for bar only)
BTD
Borneio (?)

Am I forgetting anyone? Let me know before I order food tomorrow.

We've got:
Hawaiian Chicken
Rice
Hawaiian Potato Salad
Some tropical fruit and assorted snackes
Rum drinks
Non-rum drinks
Tiny Umbrellas
A Pineapple Upsidedown cake if I can get my act together
Blood Orange Cupcakes???

Appropriate music
A really fun but tacky Hawaiian Adventure

And, of course, the star - the PUKA BAR!

See you tomorrow!

AllyOops! 05-06-2006 10:28 AM

I really would love to see you all. :)

Maybe I can make it to the Puka Bar a little later!

Cheers!

BarTopDancer 05-06-2006 12:53 PM

If I make it I'll be +1

Where is the Puka Bar? We may have to meet you all there.

Motorboat Cruiser 05-06-2006 12:58 PM

Would love to be there but Matthew is working until 10 and I'm possibly gigging.

Hope you all have a swanky time! :)

Not Afraid 05-06-2006 01:02 PM

The Puka Bar is on Willow before Magnolia (possibly at Daisy) but you'd pass it on the right coming to our house from the 710.

:( The +1 is sick and we need to get him better in time for the Ducks game tomorrow. Silly noon-time games. See you all next time!

Cadaverous Pallor 05-07-2006 11:45 AM

Woo. Woo, I say. :D

I'd make the Puka Bar our hang out if they could make a decent mai-tai.

Thanks to our amazing hosts...who time and again prove that they are the coolest around. Love you guys!

Didn't take any pictures because I was having too much fun ;)

€uroMeinke 05-07-2006 05:27 PM

I had a great time, but I have to say I was a tad dissappointed by the Puka Bar - it might just be becasue it was being at least partially taken over by some other party so I'm not sure if the DJ there was a permanent fixture. I would have prefered more tiki/lounge themed music - and yeah, the Mia Tais were way on the sweat side even for a sweat drink.

Sweat flavored Mai-Tias........ Uhm, no thanks.

Maybe if you throw in some of those sweaty-ass crackers, eh?

Kevy Baby 05-07-2006 06:16 PM

I was just gonna let it slide, but ya just HAD to point it out

Um, the DJ was not a permanent fixture.

I know this because I broke my no-drinking edict, got completely crunked on Belvedere vodka shooters toasting my late boyfriend's birthday and HELLO! You should NEVER drink when you're all emotional-like, crashed the birthday party in the adjoining room because, honestly, I saw that they had Cheetos and everybody knows that there is no finer or classier snack combo then Vodka and Cheetos  , then parked myself right behind the DJ booth where I giggled with the deejays, asked them about all of their gigs and requested that my favorite songs be played (AT SOMEONE ELSE'S PARTY). Imagine my heartbreak when they had no Smiths or Depeche Mode on vinyl.

This is why cocktails & I aren't friends. :(

P.S.~ It was so nice to see y'all! :)

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 05-08-2006 12:45 AM

Thanks to the wonderful Swanky hosts. Your house is more than swank, its awesome. I had a ton of fun. Great food, great people and the Brady Bunch.

My Tequila Surise was pretty good. hehehehe

Great seeing everyone!!!

JWBear 05-08-2006 08:11 AM

Swell party! Bill and I had fun. Sorry we pooped out early; we had a very busy day.

Ghoulish Delight 05-08-2006 08:34 AM

Good times! The Puka Bar was indeed unimpressive. I mean, even with a private birthday party, that tiny place was almost empty. If we're the happening Saturday night crowd, the Puka Bar is not long for this world.

But the company made the evening, of course. Great to meet you JWBear!

And I stayed awake for most of the Brady Bunch in Hawaii, but Jack put me to sleep when Vincent Price arrived.

Not Afraid 05-08-2006 08:44 AM

Well, since I am not much of a barfly, it's nice to know that the Puka Bar is not something I am going to be missing. Too loud for convo. But, the men's bathroom is cool (Borneio and I has a little tet-a-tet in the potty! ;) )

I have more leftover Chicken Katsu and Beef that I will ever eat. I should've send some home with the later nighters. But, the delicious Blood Orange cupcakes and Earthquake Upsidedown cake are all gone.

I had a Brady Bunch dream which I don't really remember but it had to do with trying to get out of a cave so I could get to my client meeting.

We had breakfast with our niece Sunday morning and had planned to go to the park, but we feel asleep. Damn snuggley cats.

So, what are we doing for June?

Kevy Baby 05-08-2006 08:47 AM

Yeah, and I am sorry I missed the opening AND had to leave early (the former for a great reason and the latter because the Gusinator had to work Sunday morning).

*Eh* on the bar - even without the loud music.

So, any thoughts on the June swanking yet? Hopefully it will be when we're there- it'd be great to attend one of these events.....:D

Gemini Cricket 05-08-2006 12:26 PM

Chicken katsu... Mmmmmm....

"Puka" is Hawaiian for "hole".

Babette 05-09-2006 05:39 PM

The cats liked the katsu, too. I think they wanted a cocktail as well because I was attacked by Scoundral when I tried to fix myself a drink. We had a hissing stand-off. I got my drink, but only because I went elsewhere when I learned the shaker he was guarding was empty.

Not Afraid 05-09-2006 05:42 PM

Yes, Scoundrel has a bad habit of hogging all of the alcohol then passing out at parties.
