The Great Platform Switcharoo

Well, I'm going to do it. I'm switching platforms after 15 (or is it more) years of love with a PC, I'm going to buy a Mac.

There is a 15" MacBookPro just waiting for my credit card number which it will get sometime next week.

I'm excited but I'm also scared to death. This is a MAJOR change for me, but there are so many similarities between the 2 platforms I shouldn't be so worried.

So, 10 days from now, my old life will come to an end and a new life will start.

WHEEEEE!:D

€uroMeinke 05-14-2006 11:01 PM

And I will scavanging parts - Arrrrrr

Not Afraid 05-14-2006 11:04 PM

LOL! First purchased PC specs - 40 megabytes, 30Hz.

Alex 05-14-2006 11:23 PM

First PC purchased specs: vic-20 with tape drive.

You'll have the people coming in here and supporting your decision. I hope it works out for you, but I'm afraid I have to withhold support. Over the course of 8 years I've watched Lani have a dozen times more trouble with her Macs than I've ever had with my PCs. But if it give €uro parts to poach then something good will have come of it. (Plus, I'd rather the world have one Bill Gates than a dozen Steve Jobs so I like to put my money in his pocket.)

(By the way, this post isn't particularly serious, I don't care which platform people buy.)

Snowflake 05-15-2006 03:16 AM

Well, that's cool.

I've always had a PC for no better reason than this is the platform used at work.

All my friends who have macs, love them.

flippyshark 05-15-2006 09:41 AM

I'm one of the loyal zombie mac minions, so I say "Welcome, comrade." Anyway, I have had very few problems and many many good times with my macs over the last decade or so.

Gimme a buzz if I can help you with anything.

Gemini Cricket 05-15-2006 10:09 AM

Mac and PC... both are fine.
It's like Coke and Pepsi for me. Same thing to me, big deal for other people. Everyone should learn how to use both.

Matterhorn Fan 05-15-2006 10:14 AM

Coke totally rules! From my experience, you can drink Pepsi and still tolerate Coke, but if you drink Coke you're less likely to tolerate Pepsi.

GC, you must usually buy Pepsi, right?

To be specific, I usually buy either Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi. But I usually buy whichever one is on sale at the time at the grocery store. They alternate, I've noticed.

I also noticed that Diet Coke has more caffeine than Diet Pepsi. I get much more wired off of DC.
:)

Ralphie's sister is trying to get me hooked onto Diet Dr. Pepper, that's okay too in my book.

Not Afraid 05-15-2006 10:45 AM

I cannot drink diet coke but I really like Diet Pepsi. BIG difference between the two to me.

Cadaverous Pallor 05-15-2006 10:53 AM

I don't care too much from a usability perspective which I use....but Macs are cooler, no doubt about that.

Enjoy, and keep us posted as you figure it out!

CoasterMatt 05-15-2006 02:47 PM

Screw you all, Amiga OS Forever!! :D

CoasterMatt 05-15-2006 02:48 PM

No Mac is as cool as my Cheeseburger 9000, but they do have their charms.

Kevy Baby 05-15-2006 07:27 PM

I prefer iced tea

Not Afraid 05-15-2006 07:29 PM

Tomorrow. 10:30. Here is my charge card.

Then I try and be patient as shipping ensues.

CoasterMatt 05-15-2006 07:33 PM

Newegg.com is the best for computer shopping stuff...

They own a big chunk of my soul

Not Afraid 05-15-2006 08:00 PM

Good! I will be buying more ram after the fact.

orbitalpunk 05-15-2006 08:15 PM

I'd recommend buying from a 3rd party reseller like amazon or something. Apple will charge 10% if you return it. no mater what. on the other hand, you can buy thru the online apple store at student price with no problem. they never ever check your student credentials. I've bought a G5 and Mac Mini and returned both. Mac's sure are pretty but felt I was using a computer with one hand tied behind my back. I hope you have a successful switch. And make sure what ever programs you use, that its available in Universal Binary. Otherwise it will be very slow. And dont forget, windows XP runs great on them now. so if you ever miss something thats not there, your in luck.

Every time I look at their site I drop a nice chunk of change with them.

I'm currently waiting on my 1 gig sd memory card for my new camera and I'm getting a camera case as part of a bundle package. I closed out before I could spend any more.

[homer]mmmmmmmmm technology........(droooooolllllllll)[/homer]

CoasterMatt 05-16-2006 03:45 PM

I especially like that Newegg.com's shipping is so fast, and their customer service has been really responsive the one time (out of about 60 purchases) that I needed them.

Their shipping is amazing. Then again you live about 15 minutes and I live about 45 minutes from where they ship from.

Not Afraid 05-20-2006 02:44 PM

Well, it too me a bit longer to get to the Apple store than I anticipated, but I did the deed today. I ended up getting a MacBookPro 15" 2.16 GHz - much faster then I had originally intended, but it wprked out better that way.

I also got a 300GB external hard drive to store our music and photos, a wireless keyboard and a new printer (which ended up being free).

I got 2-3 days shipping, so I should have it next week.

WHEEEE!

Ponine 05-21-2006 08:07 AM

How totally cool!
I know nothing about Macs, but I dont hate them.... they might just be perfect for you!

I cant wait to hear how it works out for you.

Congrats!
