Midnight Snack Time

It's 11:34 and I'm just getting around to dinner.

I'm having cheese empanadas and a mug of Teavana peach oolong tea.

What's your midnight snack? (Or breakfast, lunch, blinner, or whatever odd meal you may be eating right now.)

Prudence 05-22-2006 08:46 PM

In about an hour it will be chicken and three cheese casserole.

Not Afraid 05-22-2006 08:49 PM

I just had a lean sirloin burger topped with mushrooms sauteed in garlic over herb greens.

I had the same last night. Cooking for one is difficult!

It looks like I will be having chicken for the next 4 nights.

Matterhorn Fan 05-22-2006 08:53 PM

The cheese empanadas (Goya brand) sound good in theory--flaky dough around cheese--but I cannot recommend them. The filling tastes like Velveeta, which I do not have a love for. And as yummy as fried food can be, I'm not such a fan of putting frozen food (which sometimes has icy bits on it) into hot oil. It burned my foot a bit.

CoasterMatt 05-22-2006 09:10 PM

I fried a twinkie and topped it with a melted Hershey's Special Dark bar - yes, it was that bad of a day...

CoasterMatt 05-22-2006 09:15 PM

I wonder what these taste like...

€uroMeinke 05-22-2006 09:29 PM

Asbach Uralt from the wine merchant next door

Matterhorn Fan 05-22-2006 10:15 PM

My tea's gone cold and it's a little bitter (I let it steep too long). But it's still good and I'll finish it before going to bed.

Mousey Girl 05-22-2006 10:28 PM

I just had Triscuits with cheeze in a can, washed down with cran-raspberry (lite) juice.

BarTopDancer 05-22-2006 10:31 PM

I'm really trying not to eat late but I'm having a craving for some martini olives (sans the martini). I think I should go to bed, because if I eat them I'll be a balloon tomorrow.

I think I saw you on a Lean Cuisine commercial.

wendybeth 05-22-2006 10:54 PM

I'm still thinking of that fried Twinkie with melted Hershey bar....I'm not one for sweets, but that just sounds interesting, in a really artery-clogging and semi-revolting way. I'd try one.

Gemini Cricket 05-23-2006 05:16 AM

Brownie Bites from Whole Foods or Costco. They freakin' rock.
:)

Matterhorn Fan 05-23-2006 09:38 AM

Leftover pizza.
Same kind of tea.

I either have to drive 200 miles to get it or order it off the internet, but it's soooooo worth it :snap:

Not Afraid 05-23-2006 12:10 PM

I really dislike nutella. I LOVE hazelnuts and, well, chocolate is divine. I even like chocolate bars with hazelnuts. But, somehow nutella just grosses me out.

Scrooge McSam 05-23-2006 12:12 PM

I love you anyway.

What is this? "Everybody change their avatar" day?

Not Afraid 05-23-2006 12:14 PM

I've been wanting to do it for a while. I was just too lazy. Today, I'd rather change my avatar than clean house.

Gemini Cricket 05-23-2006 12:15 PM

Everyone's changing their avatars. I'm so confused.
:D

Scrooge McSam 05-23-2006 12:15 PM

Yeah... maybe it's time. Mr. Cleese has been good to me, but I'm sure he could use a rest.

Ponine 05-23-2006 01:14 PM

OKay, I joined the cool kids...

And I remembered that I have been known to eat ice cream at 2am

Gemini Cricket 05-23-2006 06:56 PM

I just had a few Brownie Bites. I feel sick.
:( :D

Stan4dSteph 05-24-2006 06:30 AM

Oooh. MF has an avatar!

I just had my new favorite breakfast: Kashi Go Lean Crunch, vanilla yogurt and fruit (bananas and strawberries are preferred). mmmm :)

Gemini Cricket 05-24-2006 06:31 AM

I had Kashi, too. But I had 1/2 Kashi, 1/2 Honey Nut Cheerios.
:)

Betty 05-24-2006 01:29 PM

I just had a wonderful bowl of fruit salad. Yummy. (potluck at work earlier today and just catching up to the fruit salad. As a side note - do people not understand what a potluck is? You BRING something and then EAT something... if you don't BRING something, it's not polite to EAT something. Especially when a whole bunch of people do this. Idiots.)

lizziebith 05-24-2006 01:31 PM

I'm eating fresh strawberries right now.

scaeagles 05-24-2006 01:33 PM

My wife made brownies last night for her class (she teaches 6th grade). There were some extra. I ate 6 pretty big brownies before I went to sleep. Felt really, really ill this morning. I normally don't do the late night snack thing, but at 11:00 I was thinking about them and just did it.

cirquelover 05-24-2006 01:54 PM

We had hot fudge sundaes late last night. Not the best late night snack but my husband was depressed so I joined him.
I think the boy and I are making pineapple upside down cake today so I'll be snacking on that for a few days, as husband doesn't like it.

Not Afraid 05-24-2006 02:11 PM

I was inspired by an evil friend to have cheese, crackers and salami. However, we had no salami, so I had spam.

scaeagles 05-24-2006 02:14 PM

Ick. I have never had a desire to eat spam nor do I ever expect that I will.

Not Afraid 05-24-2006 02:17 PM

When it is 11 at night, you haven't had dinner, you have salami envy but spam is all that is in the house, you stoop.

Gemini Cricket 05-24-2006 03:06 PM

Lots of people in Hawai'i eat Spam. Can't touch the stuff. Yuck, too salty. Now I consider myself a brownie whore but 6 brownies? Oink oink, Leo.

wendybeth 05-24-2006 03:13 PM

Salt would be the least of my concerns when it comes to Spam.....

BarTopDancer 05-24-2006 03:14 PM

I tried one about a year ago and almost got instant diabetes by eating one. Too sweet. My parents were mad for letting me eat that as a kid! :D I also noticed that being in my thirties means I can't tolerate a lot of sweet stuff. Bleh.

Prudence 05-24-2006 03:34 PM

All this talk of Spam reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen. How that woman could bake award-winning rolls and pies - sans recipe - and also serve fried spam sandwiches for lunch is beyond my comprehension. And she taught home ec - so who knows how many future generations were contaminated!

Although I do miss the fried bologna for breakfast. if you don't make slits along the side, it puffs up into a cone shape!

Matterhorn Fan 05-30-2006 05:33 PM

I'm having home-made (flour) tortilla chips and a root beer.

There are scallop potatoes in the oven.

Motorboat Cruiser 05-30-2006 05:45 PM

I have a rack of baby back ribs in the oven. First time making them without a grill (which I need to get very soon). I found one recipe that called for cooking them in orange juice, another calling for pineapple juice. I didn't have either so they are now cooking in cranberry juice. My improvisation has made Matthew nervous but I'm sure they will be fine. :)

Prudence 05-30-2006 06:01 PM

I was going to be all good and have a ginormous salad when I get home tonight, but then I checked my law review box and someone left me chocolates....

LSPoorEeyorick 05-30-2006 06:01 PM

I dunno! I'm still at work and I didn't bring dinner! And the boss says "stay later, we'll pay you!" And to this, I say, "OK!"

CoasterMatt 05-30-2006 06:05 PM

My monkey's makin' me orange chicken and rice for dinner - oh what wonderful service!

BarTopDancer 05-30-2006 06:12 PM

Matterhorn Fan 05-30-2006 07:44 PM

What kind of cookies?

Kevy Baby 05-30-2006 07:46 PM

Stew is on it's way.

Why is it that stew is better reheated after aging in the refrigerator?

BarTopDancer 05-30-2006 07:48 PM

Chocolate chip cookies.

And KB, it's because the flavors absorb into each other.

Oh, and for anyone remotely curious, the ribs are done and they came out perfect. The cranberry juice added a vague acidity although the Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce overpowered the cranberry flavoring. The meat fell right off the bone.

I may never grill ribs again.

Stan4dSteph 05-30-2006 08:34 PM

Tonight my snack was everything in my fridge or cupboard.

Mousey Girl 05-30-2006 09:11 PM

Just orange juice here...The girls are getting tonights leftovers, everything but the meat, PoohDog gets that. After having an unexpected child walk through the door at dinner time, there isn't enough left to feed anyone tomorrow.

flippyshark 05-30-2006 10:13 PM

Juicy Pear Jelly Bellies, and later, a BMT sandwich from Subway

Mousey Girl 05-30-2006 11:20 PM

Ok, now that it is closer to midnight, I am going to behave and have a big cup of ice water. The icecream in the freezer is really calling my name, but icewater sounds better right now.

The girls are grubbing on mashed potatos and corn and Pooh scarffed the rest of the salisbury steak.

Gemini Cricket 05-31-2006 05:31 AM

No midnight snack here, but I did have a bagel with Nutella this morning. Mmm mmm good! :)

To be fair, I don't have any bouillion cubes. I did eat a lot though. Pretzel crisps, a whole bag of Smart Pop butter popcorn, and a light ice cream sandwich. I think that's it. I also had baked beans and a hot dog and a pita with turkey and pepper jack for dinner.

Motorboat Cruiser 05-31-2006 02:18 PM

We are trying ....ahem....tofu dogs this evening. I'm a pretty adventurous eater and I do enjoy tofu in various dishes and yet, I'm not expecting this to be good. I'm just tired of being asked if we can try them.

I think tonight is going to be a wonderful lesson in "Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it".

Tofu dogs? That is just.....wrong. A hot dog, by the very definition, is supposed to be bad for you. That is just unnatural and all practitioners of the tofu dog should be banished to the pit of hell.

May I recommend Morning Star Farms as a brand to try for veggie stuff. Their veggie corn dogs are amazing. They make veggie hot dogs, they're in the freezer section next to the veggie corn dogs at Ralphs.

I'm eating veggies with a ginger dressing that I made with the receipe from the Disney magazine.

flippyshark 05-31-2006 11:25 PM

I tried the Morning Star meatless corn dogs, and they got my flippy-approval. Unfortunately, I got a bad box of them last time I bought them. I don't know how that happened. But, yes, they're just like a regular corn dog. Now i want one.

I also have Gardenburger italian sausages to try.

8 lbs for $4, that's a screaming deal!! They cost me that if I go slave away in the field for an hour or so and pick them myself. I had to pay $15 yesterday for a flat and I live 2 miles from the field.

I love Oregon strawberries they are the sweetest I have ever tasted. Soon I'll be making jam, pies and many other wonderful creations. I love summer!

This weekend is the strawberry festival in my little town. The biggest strawbery shortcake in the US gets hauled down main street, it's supposed to be over 6,ooo pounds this year! Then they give it all away for free. They save 1,000 servings and deliver them to nursing homes, the hospital, the police and firemen. It's been going on for 97 years now. It's a big to do for our little town!

Ah, well your supplier hasn't ordered any in a while. You'll be glad to know she got a delivery on Wednesday. The parmesans are a much lighter shade of whey.
There are, occasionally, batches of parmesan thet cook really dark, not anything I have any control over. They do, however, taste just as delicious as their lighter toned brethren.

We use only natural ingredients; color and texture may vary

Lately, I've been a late-night chowhound. :( It seriously needs to stop. I can eat my own weight in snacks.

My favorite-late-night snacks lately (or anytime snacks?)

*A slice of cheddar cheese
*Maple & brown sugar rice cakes
*Peanut butter & chocolate chip rice cakes
*Cinnamon toast rice cakes (extra decadent if I spread butter on top!)
*Mini cheddar rice cakes
*Red licorice (the rope kind!)

Can you tell I'm hooked on rice cakes? They've become my latest obsession. I always crave them! I usually get a sweet tooth when the clock strikes 12, so I usually munch on a piece of licorice.

Last night, however, I'm not going to pretty it up. I ate many bites of cold steak. In bed. At like, 4:30 a.m. How sexy!

I LOVE rice cakes. Ralphs store brand are devine. I'm hooked on the cheddar ones but I may have to give the cinnamon toast a try and put butter on top. That sounds scrumptious.

I went to Trader Joes hungry. Big mistake. Aside from the $20 in cheese and crackers I also bought cheddar corn crunchies, triple ginger cookies, waffle cookies and pita chips. I put back the wafer cookies, chocolate cat cookies and a bunch of frozen stuff.

But just so you know; I am still hooked on 'em. average about three packages a week.

I was a total bad girl tonight. :( I stayed in on a Saturday night (which is rare, but refreshing :)) and got my late-night snack attack at 11:30 p.m. while watching SNL with my Nana.

I had:

*A quarter of a piece of peanut butter & chocolate chip rice cake with crunchy peanut butter smeared on top

* A handful of potato chips dipped in ketchup

*A few bites of steak, yet again

*A few bites of Italian chopped salad left-overs. I was digging for black olives & garbanzo beans among other yummy stuff.

It's 2:20 a.m., and I know I'm not even done yet. :(

I get teased for the potato chip/ketchup combo, and it's one of my very favorites! I only love potato chips when they are smothered in onion dip or ketchup. Sauces & dips are my biggest weaknesses- taco sauce, tabasco, salsa, guacamole, hummus & onion dip!! I don't even need anything to dip, except my finger.

A 'tato is a 'tato. If you dip your fries in ketchup, why not potato chips? ;)
