My first super 8 movie is done!

I just got done editing it (tape and sissors!). And I just ran it through the projector and it looks pretty good. I hand prossesed the film myself, which can be pretty hard with super 8 since you have to do it in the complete dark! Even thought the film is only about 2 minutes long it is the first film I have done in FILM! :D

€uroMeinke 01-27-2005 11:11 PM

So when do we get to see the digital transfer?

Not Afraid 01-27-2005 11:11 PM

Congratulations! How fun to use Super 8! I miss actual film in many ways.

belleh5 01-27-2005 11:12 PM

Congrats!!

I most likely won't put this film into a digital format simply because it was more of an expriment then a real project. I just wanted to make a movie with nothing more then useing my own hands as much a possable, this film has proved to me that I can do it! It is only about 2 1/2 minutes long with a dark figure in a robe walking around the hills of Santa Clarita and my school. What is cool about it is it has the look of being very old. If you have never seen hand prossesd film before it has a very damaged look to it, which it what I wanted!

But when I do make a good film I will be sure to transfer it and post it on the net for all of my online friends to see! :)

MerryPrankster 01-28-2005 12:10 AM

Congratulations, Boingo! Keep up the good work!

Oh my goodness! I haven't even heard of Super 8 in ages. Like vinyl, it's one of those mediums that creates a certain ambiance that does actually alter the viewing experience. Or, rather, changing mediums alters the intended experience. Watching the VCR tapes of old family Super 8 movies -- there's no "clickclickclick" of the projector, no need for it to be in the dark, no illuminated dust swirls in the projected beam. And the ease of using later media means there's no longer the ritual of gathering family and everyone getting comfy before watching.
Yay for Super 8!

congrats!

Gemini Cricket 01-29-2005 03:30 PM

Congrats! Super 8's rock.
:)

Motorboat Cruiser 01-29-2005 03:40 PM

Very nice accomplishment! :)

MickeyD 01-29-2005 04:40 PM

That's so cool! Super 8 films remind me of my childhood.

Boingonut 01-29-2005 11:53 PM

Thanks everyone, I hope to do some more ambitious film in the future in super 8 or maybe regular 8. Also I am going to be working in 16mm a lot also which will be cool! Super 8 is still used quite a bit in film schools, it really gives you a good feel for how film works before you work with the "real" cameras. SInce most if not all filmmakers coming up today worked in video first it is important to understand how film works since video is nothing like film. Super 8 really let you get a feel for it. And yes there is somthing great about siting in a dark room with a projector runing, it is something I get to experince at least once a week and I never get sick of it! :D

Matterhorn Fan 01-30-2005 08:22 AM

So here's where Boingonut's been hiding out . . . you're in a dark room watching Super8 movies!

Now, hurry up and make a movie that you're going to let us see. :p

MickeyLumbo 01-30-2005 08:48 AM

Doubtful, they are old enough to have worked in regular 8 and then moved onto 16mm.

Tim Burton made a whole bunch of stuff in super 8!

flippyshark 01-30-2005 08:47 PM

Hey! I love Super 8, and I have been working on a Super 8 epic of my own for about two and a half years.

I have shot about 30 rolls of a strange horror/fantasy, and our own HTHBellcaptain is in it, playing a crazed man in a dragon mask who hangs out in the woods and kills people.

I still have about two and a half scenes to shoot before I can assemble a complete narrative. I'vebeen traqnsferring everything to digital and editing on my Mac.

What sort of camera did you use? I have been using a Kinoflex, a spring-wound wonder from Soviet Russia. (I call it the Commie Cam) I love the fact that I have to stop to wind the motor before each shot. My cast found this entertaining as well.

Since you processed the film yourself, I assume it was not Kodachrome 40 (which is what I have been using.) Did you use a black and white stock?

If I ever finish my film, I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

Boingonut 01-30-2005 11:09 PM

Cool anouther super 8 person! I would love to see your film too! Anyway I used a Canon 1014 and a Vivitar 84p. I shot it on kodak black and white Plus X reversal. It was really fun to shot with both these cameras. I think my next film we be in 16mm though because I just bought as of today a Bolex H16, yea spring loaded cameras! I love super 8 though it has such a great look to it and it is so easy to use. I am sure I will make some more films with it soon as well as my 16mm work!

Good luck on getting you film done! :D

Boingonut 01-30-2005 11:39 PM

Oh yea and I have been useing some of my hand processed super 8 film to make rayographs on 16mm 7363 film. Some of them are pretty good, some not so good, but it is interesting and something I think I will use in an experimantal film someday.

I also shot a bunch of kodachrome 40 at disneyland about 2 weeks ago. When I would get the camera out people would look at me like I was nuts! I guess I kind of was since I took it down the Matterhorn (useing about 30 feet in the process!). I don't know what I am going to do with the fotage and I still need to take it to the lab so it may not have turned out but it will be interesting to see DL in super 8!

. . . and Matterhorn Fan held a light.

flippyshark 01-31-2005 07:32 AM

It's true. Matterhorn Fan held an extremely hot flood light in place, and was ready to go for the extinguisher in case of accidental fire.

Matterhorn Fan 01-31-2005 06:43 PM

You had a fire extinguisher?

Not Afraid 01-31-2005 06:48 PM

MatterhornFlan, you need to get on YIM.

Matterhorn Fan 01-31-2005 07:00 PM

Uh oh. Has my blatant disregard for fire safety gotten me in trouble yet again?

Oh! You mean, that was supposed to be make believe for a movie. Oooops!

Matterhorn Fan 02-02-2005 05:37 PM

One might wonder what you thought the corn syrup was for.

Not Afraid 02-02-2005 07:52 PM

Whaaaaaa?

Cold medicine alert. Brain in gutter. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

HTHBellcaptain 02-02-2005 09:12 PM

I guess I should explain. We used corn syrup and food coloring as blood during the filming. It was really gross and sticky. I had that stuff all over me.

Not Afraid 02-02-2005 09:17 PM

Whew! I feel SO much better.

Brad! Janet. Dr. Scott. Rocky. Ugh.

It certainly was exciting to see smoke coming off a bulb that was about twice as powerful as the light socket was built to safely handle.

Matterhorn Fan 02-03-2005 11:49 AM

It was more fun setting your stove on fire. :p

Madderharp Fan has a knack for catching things on fire. She's (or he, whatever the case may be) is a good cook, despite being able set things ablaze. She (or he) makes a mean Apple Pie Flambe, even if it is a little hard on her (or his) oven.

Matterhorn Fan 02-03-2005 01:31 PM

When did my gender become indeterminate again?

Not Afraid 02-03-2005 01:47 PM

You and that Stan guy.

Stan4dSteph 02-03-2005 03:24 PM

Don't drag him into this!

Not Afraid 02-03-2005 08:04 PM

Talk to the Hand, Stan!

Matterhorn Fan 02-03-2005 09:11 PM

Poor Boingonut. His poor, poor thread.

Um . . . yay Super 8!

Boingonut 02-03-2005 11:05 PM

meh ;)

HTHBellcaptain 02-04-2005 11:12 AM

You know, I would love to see the film that Boingonut has made. I think it is cool that he is using Super 8 film. (There I think we have safely put the thread back on track.)
