LoT book club?

I thought it might be fun if a bunch of us read the same book, then we could talk about it in a thread or IM. Any takers?

If so, might I suggest Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell as our first book? Admittedly, I'm reading it for a real life book club, so it's rather convenient for me. I'm in the middle of Ghostwritten by the same guy, and it's good. Very weird and metaphysical, and very cool.

Of course, it doesn't have to be that book, so any suggestions are welcome.

Snowflake 05-31-2006 05:31 PM

Great idea!

€uroMeinke 05-31-2006 05:49 PM

I'm game - but this may require a dangerous journey into a book shop

This is why I have a Borders rewards card.......all the $$ I earn goes in an Xmas account to help me x mas shop for friends (or more likely me) :-)

Matterhorn Fan 05-31-2006 07:36 PM

I have that card. The only problem is that I tend to use amazon.com more often than I go to Borders.

mousepod 05-31-2006 08:04 PM

I'm game. I always wanted to join a book club.

wendybeth 05-31-2006 08:17 PM

Oh, all right. But only because I'm a sheep.

Traci has to put David Copperfield in her reading lineup, though.

Matterhorn Fan 05-31-2006 08:25 PM

I will not be participating if the book is David Copperfield, just so you know.

wendybeth 05-31-2006 08:36 PM

No, she just has to read it.

Sounds like some prior Dickens trauma here...?

Matterhorn Fan 05-31-2006 08:40 PM

Of a sort. I won the battle, but I'm glad to be at a point in my life where I do not need Dickens and will not have to read any more of his stuff.

A lot of people like Dickens, but it's not for me.

I can't fathom why people like his stuff. Aside from Christmas Carol they all just go on and on and on and on....damn serials.

Only one time in my life have I taken an essay exam on a book I never read. That book was Hard Times. Some lit class or another when I was an undergrad. Blahblahblah. Misery, misfortune, woe. Dickens and Cooper: just say no.

It's already there. :p Score, we've got lots of people for our book club! Shall we set a date to finish with the book?

Ponine 06-01-2006 01:47 PM

I'm in...
Fill me in the deets... we read the same book? Talk about a book we read?

Motorboat Cruiser 06-01-2006 03:04 PM

Just wondering...

Am I alone in not being particularly enamoured with O. Henry. I'm about a third of the way through a collection of short stories and so far, I'm underwhelmed. Maybe I'm missing something.

Tom Robbins, on the other hand, is rocking my world. :)

Gemini Cricket 06-01-2006 03:11 PM

Let's pick books that were made into movies. Then I could watch the movie and not read the book but still participate in the book club.
:D

I'm too ADD to read books.

Exactly.

GC: :p

€uroMeinke 06-01-2006 06:23 PM

I'm presuming Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell is the first book - though I have yet to obtain a copy

However, anyone who would like to chat about Murakami, Niel Gaiman, or Duncan Glenn's I, Lucifer , which I'm reading at the moment, feel free to start a thread and I'll gladly join in.

Not Afraid 06-01-2006 06:25 PM

Does that mean we have to buy 2 copies to get us both up to speed?

I'm reading The Devil in the White City at the moment. We can talk about that or any Murakami.

I loved Devil in the White City, read that last summer. Fascinating read, if a bit verbose.

mousepod 06-01-2006 06:58 PM

OK, I think we have enough people in this thread alone to get this going. All I need is a "for sure" name of the book and a date that we're going to start talking about it... I'm cool with any book, I will not try to veto anything. If tracilicious' pick is cool with you, it's fine by me.
Let's start!

Me too! :)

Gemini Cricket 06-02-2006 05:21 AM

Why don't we put it to a vote? We can do a poll in this thread.
:)

tracilicious 06-02-2006 08:14 AM

I'm all for a poll. What should the choices be?

LSPoorEeyorick 06-02-2006 08:18 AM

BTW, I'm in.

Gemini Cricket 06-02-2006 08:24 AM

lol! :D

I nominate 'Marley and Me'. It would give me an excuse to buy it.

tracilicious 06-02-2006 05:39 PM

Ok, so the nominations are Cloud Atlas and Marley and Me. Any others? I'll put the poll up tomorrow.

I checked out a Goodnight Moon video from the Library for Indi. It's a collection of stories with kids talking about various subjects inbetween. It's a pretty creepy video.

Prudence 06-02-2006 06:14 PM

Madame Bovary! (Because it has been on my "to read" list for probably a decade now.)

Yes!!!! Yes!!!!! I love this book- it's probably my all time favorite.

E.M. Forster is good, too- 'Howard's End' is wonderful.

Not Afraid 06-02-2006 08:14 PM

Murakami - just because we have to continue our "conversions".

€uroMeinke 06-02-2006 08:32 PM

So do we actually want to make use of the Poll functionality of this software? OR shall I start a meta-poll?

Meta poll

Not Afraid 06-03-2006 08:35 AM

Both Steph and I are reading Devil in the White City at he moment - we're both about 60 pages into it. I'd like to add that to the metapoll.

Gemini Cricket 06-03-2006 08:38 AM

What's a meta-poll?

I have voted yes, and rated this thread five stars. The rating serves no purpose except that I forgot we could rate and rediscovered it upon messing around with buttons.

jdramj 06-03-2006 09:51 PM

ooooh ooooh! Can I join?

mistyisjafo 06-05-2006 10:26 AM

I'm in. I'm currently reading The General's Daughter but I'll be ready for a second book ASAP.
