True Disney Story: Red Long Johns

After my post in the "Which Way" thread I received a PM from someone asking about red long johns and it occured to me that there are several people here who have no idea where it came from. So, since there are people here who can tell the story much better than I, I'm sending out a request, for the history of the Red Long Johns. :decap:

Well, I believe it started in 1973 with the death of Bogden Delaurot, who drowned in the Rivers of America after hiding on Tom Sawyer Island after hours. As a memorial, a pair of red longjohns was hung on the banks of the river, still there to this day. It became tradition, though not all of the tributes are as visible. For instance, for Dolly Young, who died on the Matterhorn, a pair of longjohns is placed in the climbing expedition box within the caves. Others are clearly visible, such as the most recent for Marcello Torrez. It's in the small camp ground scene along Big Thunder Trail. They even recently installed a red spotlight (uncomfirmed rumor has it that it was funded by the Torrez family) to ensure its continued visibility.

One day, long ago, four people (GD, CP, Euro and NA) were enjoying a trip on the venerable Mark Twain when .........

I think you'll get about 4 different tellings from here. ;)

You'll have to ask Disney for the true story behind this one

Only Ambassador Becky knows the real truth.

Motorboat Cruiser 06-21-2006 08:31 AM

I recall hearing something about this, many moons ago.

€uroMeinke 06-21-2006 08:44 AM

Go ask Snopes

Scrooge McSam 06-21-2006 11:21 AM

I was the one that asked.

Snopes? Are you suggesting I'm being misled?

I didn't see anything about red long johns there.

I was hoping you'd get actual answers... But since you didn't, read here starting about post 55 and then and only then read here

Scrooge McSam 06-21-2006 01:16 PM

I see.

Thank you.

BarTopDancer 06-21-2006 01:21 PM

You're welcome.

Kevy Baby 06-21-2006 08:27 PM

So, have we ever done an official listing of all the red long-john tributes there are?

Cadaverous Pallor 06-21-2006 09:01 PM

I think GD's list above is about as comprehensive as anything we've babbled over drinks.

Sour ones, right?;)

Why, if true, would they use red long johns? Has this ever been used else where? Seems like an odd item for a tribute. It might hold more water if it was used in the past by someone else.

I belive CP though, just B.S. (which, BTW, are my initials so I should know!).

No no no! It's all true!

€uroMeinke 06-24-2006 12:27 AM

The real mystery is the tiny pair of red long johns seen in Snow White's Scary Adventure

Lol! Re-reading those old threads was fun- I can't help but think back over all that has happened since then......no wonder they were so happy to get rid of our asses.:D Being a totally gullible type. I fall for **** like this all the time, but I'd like to think I am good-natured about it when I do. NA was right- sometimes a twisted sense of humor is what gets us through our days and nights.

RStar 06-26-2006 05:52 PM

Yes, I agree! I don't know how I'd have gotten through without humor!

And I've been told mine can be as twisted as a pretzle!
