Cemetery Screenings - July 1 - Dr. Strangelove

Gates at 7:30. Film at 9:00

This is a must see for a few. And, it wouldn't be summer without a Kubrick film at the Cemetery.

Not Afraid 06-27-2006 10:22 AM

CINESPIA Presents:
DR. STRANGELOVE
Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Saturday, July 1st
Gates at 7:30 pm Film at 9:00 pm
Hollywood Forever Cemetery
6000 Santa Monica Boulevard at Gower
No reservation necessary.
$10 Donation Tickets available at gate.
As a courtesy to other movie-goers: NO TALL CHAIRS

Kubrick’s brilliant black comedy is more hilarious and relevant than ever and Peter Sellers performance as three different characters is incomparable. When a general goes haywire and orders a nuclear strike, the president is faced with drunken Russian ire from one side and fanatical sabre-rattling from the other. Bring blankets, drinks and picnic dinner for this special screening below (and above) the stars. DJ Jun spins before and after the screening.

Looks like we're going...better go chair shopping.

wendybeth 06-27-2006 11:36 AM

God, I'm jealous. I would seriously have considered re-scheduling our trip had I known that was going to be on the docket.

You could always pop over to the westside for a fremont outdoor movie. yeah, it lacks a little in ambiance, but they're showing Shaun of the Dead later this summer, as well as an assortment of other flicks.

wendybeth 06-27-2006 02:55 PM

Oooh, we're going over in early September.......:D

JWBear 06-29-2006 01:48 PM

Bill and I may go.

Alex 06-29-2006 02:56 PM

I love most of Stanley Kubrick but have never cared for Dr. Strangelove. I'd rather watch Eyes Wide Shut on continuous loop for a day.

It is so sad that NA and I are so in agreement on Monty Python but must disagree on this. I wonder which end of a soft-boiled egg she cracks; for the wrong answer will mean war.

Not Afraid 06-29-2006 02:58 PM

Actually, I've never seen Dr. Strangelove, so we may still be able to be friends. I have always had my misgivings about seeing the film which is why I haven't seen it. But, I knew there was no getting out of it this time. I will save that silver bullit for Blazing Saddles. ;)

€uroMeinke 06-29-2006 02:59 PM

Hmm - Lisa hasn't seen Dr. Strangelove yet, so we'll see how she likes it. I think we'd both probably prefer Eyes Wide Shut in continuous loop format.

Ghoulish Delight 06-29-2006 03:01 PM

I'll actually be able to be there before the gates open, for once. CP will be coming up separately after work.

Not Afraid 06-29-2006 03:08 PM

This will be the inagauration of the NEW TABLE! I'm overly excited by this.

innerSpaceman 06-30-2006 06:17 PM

I don't know if I can make it. I'm double-booked. Successful chair hunt tomorrow will be the deciding factor.

Ugh, I just found out today that another of my favorite movies is playing at the cemetery on MONDAY! - - namely, Rock'n'Roll High School ... with two members of the starring Ramones in permanent residence at the cemetery no less. Visit their graves, then see them rock!

Fine, I'm double-booked on Monday, too ... and can't do this one. Bah. Why are there two fantastic cemetery screenings on my frelling birthday weekend!?!?!?

€uroMeinke 06-30-2006 06:20 PM

Where's the info on the Rock'n'Roll High School screening? I was just thinking about that film and it's goofiness.

innerSpaceman 07-01-2006 03:01 PM

It's written up in the L.A. Weekly - on their big What's Happening July 4th Weekend page.

Hey, I had good chair luck ... but I'm still not sure if I'm headed for the cemetery. I'm certainly leaning that way. I love the vibe of cemetery nights.

LSPoorEeyorick 07-01-2006 04:46 PM

Still in Michigan so we won't be there, but we should be at the next one and several following ones. They're so much fun. Plus we found our comfy chairs before Body Snatchers. *makes snatcher hissing noise*

innerSpaceman 07-01-2006 05:02 PM

And the wiiiiiner iiis .... Strangelove in the Cemetery.

See ya there.

wendybeth 07-01-2006 06:26 PM

Still jealous.

Cadaverous Pallor 07-02-2006 12:13 PM

Fun time, as usual. It's kind of hard to have a crappy time at these things. :)

We have new backpack chairs and they seriously rock! I'll never shy away from shlepping a chair to an outdoor event again. :snap:

Not Afraid 07-02-2006 12:23 PM

It was a fun evening, but the film was just "eh" for me. Actually, I would've liked it quite a bit more without the distracting Peter Sellers as Dr. Strangelove. IMO, he overplayed that part to extreme, although it would be hard to play that character straight and be effective. But, I now see the inspiration for Dr. Scott in RHPS.

Sellers' other characters were wonderful - especially the President. "Yes, Dimitri." Overall, it was a wierd, disjointed film and not up there with my othr Kubrick favorites. I WOULD rather watch Eyes Wide Shut on continious look than see this film - but I'd prefer Lolita.

innerSpaceman 07-03-2006 08:40 AM

Is a continuous look when you must watch a continuous loop without ever glancing away?

If so, perhaps A Clockwork Orange is the Kubrick film you crave. :p

€uroMeinke 07-03-2006 08:43 AM

I'm not sure how this thread got locked - but I've unlocked it now

innerSpaceman 07-03-2006 11:51 AM

Locked? I didn't realize puns based on N.A.'s typos would get you into such hot water around here.

Not Afraid 07-03-2006 12:08 PM

i'M MAD AND i"M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!

I must have too much flouride in my precious bodily fluids.

Oh, and I had to revisit this wonderful quote that got an actual CHEER out of the audience:

Quote:

He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought.
