Tonight We're Gonna Party Like It's 1955!

So, July 17th is a few months away, but it's never too early to plan what you're gonna do. (Or, at least start a thread about it.)

So, what are you planning to do on July 17th, 2005?
  • Of course, I'll be at DL.
  • I'm looking to wear retro 1955 attire (I'd love to make a dress and find some horn-rimmed glasses or something).
  • If they're open for 50 hours, I'm going to find a way to stick it out all 50 hours, even if it means catching 1-2 hour naps in shifts on the train.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-31-2005 03:21 PM

No plans from me until we know just what DL is doing for that day.

Claire 01-31-2005 05:46 PM

Well.....I'll be at Disneyland that weekend with a group of lovely ladies (and hot men) doing God knows what, God knows where. But I'll be there!!! :snap: If there's a 50 hour ticket, I want it. Want it baaaad.

€uroMeinke 01-31-2005 06:39 PM

I'll be at the park

innerSpaceman 01-31-2005 06:51 PM

Ooooh, I love the idea of 50's retro-wear. How swanky is that?!

While I don't think we should try the opening day attraction crawl again, I think a repeat of the Fantasyland Castle run-thru is a must!

Oh, and maybe our attraction crawl can be one attraction from each year. That doesn't mean 50 attractions, cause not every year saw a new ride. But it would be a lot of stuff to do, and would be like a Disneyland Greatest Hits Through History.

One things for sure, a pattern that has held for every Disneyland Birthday since time began: Morning in the Park from opening (or from the night before if -pleaseohpleaseohplease they have the overnighter) till noonish. Back to the Disneyland Hotel for partytime (or sleeptime if the overnighter happens) while crowds and heat are at their peak, and back in the park around 7ish till they kick us out.

belleh5 01-31-2005 07:21 PM

I'll be at DL all day long!!!

Monorail Man 01-31-2005 07:28 PM

You know I'll be there! Who would miss the 50th? :)

Motorboat Cruiser 01-31-2005 07:40 PM

We'll be there, for sure. Who could miss another run through the drawbridge? :)

Edited to add - I feel UvaGirl's pain too!

Not Afraid 01-31-2005 07:52 PM

Well, as usual, it'a all about the clothes. I will some sporting a 1950's (real or inspired) sundress that day. I do love to play dress up.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-31-2005 07:58 PM

Hmm, what would a "50's me" wear? It's one period I really haven't delved into.

I have to admit, I've been perusing the flights, etc, for that weekend....We're going on an Alaskan cruise in early August, though, so I doubt I'll be able to swing it. I've told Eric he has to take us to DLP to make up for it.

belleh5 01-31-2005 08:05 PM

OOOOO, I wannna wear 50's attire!!!! But I have no clue what to wear, I have this blue glitter tank that say's "Disneyland 55". I'm sure it will be really hot that day.

Scrooge McSam 01-31-2005 08:16 PM

Ha I was showing my mom the Disneyland DVD set when she was last here and I mentioned this is the 50th anniversary year. Immediately she says "So when are you going?" as if it wasn't a question of whether or not I'd go, just when. Up until then, I hadn't even thought about it.

Even if you ignore colors and fabrics, the cut is....yeech.
Ugh.
This one actually seems pretty good.

Okay! Just take a right at Seattle and go about 280 miles east.....:D

I dunno, though. Those fifties outfits are not exactly me...

Claire 01-31-2005 11:42 PM

Take a little flight to Portland (or drive!) and then fly with me to Sacramento and drive with the laaadies to Anaheim!

I am SO good at inviting people along when I'm not in charge.......... :D :D I'd love to meet you!!

I don't know, you think Snoqualmie will be thawed by then? And you're crazy sending her all the way up to Seattle. Sumner's a good 30-40 minutes closer.

Yeah, but Seattle is infinitely cooler. I suspect Sno's gonna be thawed by July- actually, it's (sadly, for the skiers), thawed now.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-31-2005 11:47 PM

Yeah, I've decided, no 50's fashion for me. I briefly considered the Beatnik thing, but black clothing on a full day at DL with full capacity in JULY really isn't my idea of a good time.

I'm going as a DL dork. Perhaps I'll get a new DL shirt for the occasion. :)

OMG, I was just looking at those pics of that place again yesterday! We have to! :D How funny! The drive will go quickly.....the same as check in/security/flight/drive from LAX.....right? Plus we'll have coffee and tunes. :coffee:

How did I miss this? I saw this quote later in the thread and went back to find it- sorry, Claire! Of course, you are making me an offer I might not be able to refuse.... I am plotting, etc, to see what can be done here, but there is no way I can go down there without the Girl. She would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, infinity let me live in peace again......I have actually found a few open rooms (the Sheraton is doing some major price gouging, though- double the normal rate- the bastards) and I think perhaps a weekend isn't out of the question... I think I'll make a few ressies, save some money and just see what happens.

I mean, really- miss the 50th? I'd never be able to live with the shame.....

wendybeth 02-01-2005 01:23 PM

Update:

After entering in to intense negotiations with Eric, we have arrived at the following: He gets Lasik eye surgery; I get a trip to DL! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
Okay- off to make ressies while I still can. Might I add that I am far more excited about this than the cruise? Or the trip to Cleveland? :D:snap::cheers:

Ghoulish Delight 02-01-2005 01:50 PM

Wow, not much of a negotiator, is he? I mean, "You get to go to Disneyland, while in exchange I get to have my eye sliced open and burned with a laser." I could see, "I get to go to Disneyland or else I'll slice your eye open and burn it with a laser," but man did he lose in that deal or what? :D

Hee hee- I know, is that sick, or what?

I got ressies at the Sheraton- I used my Starwood card and got a better deal than they are offering online or over the phone, and got a room upgrade as well! I'd rather stay at the DLH, but I know they've been booked solid, so I won't even try..... Yeah!!!

So cool, in fact, that it made it to the Travel Channel's top 10 bathrooms list.

Since so many people we know seem to be staying at Park Inn for the 50th, I wonder if they would give us a group rate for the rooms? Just a thought...

I can't believe I get to go! Should I get tickets for the park asap?

MickeyLumbo 02-01-2005 06:08 PM

all i can say is: book your ROOM asap.

Disneyphile 02-01-2005 06:13 PM

And if anyone can't find or afford a room, Ken and I have a nice guest room with private bath that is welcome to any Disney geek in need. And - we're only 5 minutes from DL.

Matterhorn Fan 02-02-2005 05:27 PM

You guys are all nerds.

There's at least one airline that serves Starbucks coffee. None of the froo froo drinks, just the plain ole burnt-tasting Starbucks coffee.

I had lunch at the Madonna Inn once. It's nice inside. I thought the bathrooms were just OK. Maybe the men's room was nicer--I didn't go in there.

You guys are all nerds.

The Madonna Inn has the most righteous urinal ever. It's a waterfall cave thing. Neat stuff. The waterfall 'flushes' as you walk away from it.

I really want to stay in the Cave Room. I hear it's neat.

Park Inn, baby! That's going to rock. I can't wait. I'm saving up already for the big shindig. It's gonna be a blast.

:coffee: Yay!!! :coffee:

My kids have to go to Grandmas', too! That was the deal I struck with my husband.....he had to use some vacation time for the week we were stuck in Redding (plus the days he used on our actual vacation), then he'll use the rest of his vacation for our Disney trip next December, there was no way he was going to use more vacation time to watch the kids while I went to Disneyland. :D

As for who's staying at the Park Inn....dsnylndmom and friend and cousin, libraryvixen, disguy and sparky, GC and Ralphie (I'm assuming), wendybeth and friends, me, YOU, and probably a bunch more that I don't know about or that I'm leaving out......How fun!!

Don't hype it too much or everyone will be disappointed.

HTHBellcaptain 02-03-2005 11:51 AM

It will be a SuperCaliFragilisticCinderellabration in all of it's BibbityBobbityBrillence. Won't that be Hakunmateriffic. I'm sorry all you just had to read all that ZippedeeDooDoo. Even though the name Cinderellabration is pretty bad, I think the show or parade, or whatever you want to call it, could be pretty good. If only they would change the name.

Yeah! :snap::cheers::cool:

Well, I cancelled my bedroom suite at the Park Inn and got two rooms, because I guess Barb's daughter is a bathroom hog and Tori is starting to become one as well. (Didn't want to hear the kids bitching about whose turn it was, etc). So we'll have an extra bed if anyone needs it! When is everyone planning on getting there? Our flight will come in around 12:30 pm (at John Wayne) on Sat the 16th , and we're staying through that Tues, the 19th.

Looks doable to me, just have to sign up with the SquareTrade Program, which I didn't read about, so I'm obviously an expert.

If you can sell it on ebay, you should totally sit on those reservations until a month prior. You'd make some major cash!

I'm almost pissed that I won't need a hotel room, but I'm sure I'll get in on all the insanity anyway.

MouseWife 02-05-2005 11:21 AM

Wow. This all sounds like a blast! I go away for a week and this fabulous sindig gets all planned!

I actually loved all of the clothes posted. I Love Lucy, ya know. That rose dress, CP, that is a perfect afternoon bbq dress. ;)

But, maybe NA, you can answer me this, those peddle pusher type pants, or, maybe Lucy would call them 'apartment pants' ;) , are those '50s garb? Cause those are totally doable for a day at the park. With a button up shirt and a big hat, totally fifties. Or is that 60's? Help me! Styles have come and gone and come again in my life time that I am so confused.

Am I going? I don't know. I've been making plans left and right for day trips all week, I forgot about this. You guys make it sound great! Way better than lazik surgery!!

Hee hee. It was a typo, a Freudian {sp} slip, as it were? But when I realized what it said, I thought it fit perfectly. ;)

I hope to come. If even for one of the days, hopefully one that isn't bursting at the seams.

wendybeth 02-05-2005 08:57 PM

I'm wearing a beatnik type outfit. Beatniks were around then, and they wore all black, so it's right up my alley......:D

Morrigoon 02-06-2005 03:36 AM

Hmm...

This is cute...
As is this...
This is adorable, but probably too 60's
Trés Audrey Hepburn, and the other wrong on SO many levels,
Loooove it, but again, probably too 60's
Hey, now we're talkin! (the yellow, I'm thinking...)
Completely irrelevant, but the one on the right reminds me of DLP's FL costume
Could always go with the old standby, but sub in either a Mickey head or castle (note to self, need t-shirt)... ooh, OR use a MMC logo!
Think the short pink one might pass?
Not quite as "big" as a poodle skirt... possibly not big enough? Cute though...
Wanna recreate flapjack races? Um, no.
I KNOW I've seen Marilyn Monroe in one of these, but you wouldn't catch me dead wearing it, let alone in the park!
Ladies, we may have a winner...
Oooooooooooooooooh...!
Maybe this will work as a reference?
This would work for the guys...
Posted just because I came across it and it had to be seen...
Remember, little sweaters and pleated skirts were IN - and in theme!
This look is getting more tempting the more I look at it, but am I that courageous?
I think you officially have permission to wear capris, flats, and a blouse (if it's good enough for Annette...)
Did someone say vintage hats?
"New Look" without resorting to felt and canines
See that? Original 1954 Vogue pattern!
"New Look", but possibly early (late 40's?)
Okay, that's quite enough for 2.5 hours' looking.

wendybeth 02-07-2005 09:31 PM

I just paid my deposit on the trip with WDT- believe it or not, I got a better deal through them than if I booked things separately. Plus, we get early entry to Fantasyland and Toontown! (As if- I don't get up that early for anything...) We'll be flying into SNA, which I love, and we'll get in early afternoon on the 16th. Yeah!

We get luggage tags, too? Lol- thanks, Mickey- you're a sweetheart! BTD, we are arriving at 12:30 ish that day.(The 16th). We were planning on just grabbing a txi, but if someone wants to pick us up, I'd happily buy them a few drinks of their choice, pay for gas, etc.

my first choice would be a ride with BTD!!!

but, if that doesn't work out, know that you can add supershuttle to your package and it's WAY less expensive than a taxi.

and for added fun, WDTC offers a Limo too! you can add to your package up to 30 days prior to your arrival with no change fees.;)

wendybeth 02-08-2005 03:34 PM

Actually, Supershuttle is more, because it's $10 for each person, and there aree four of us, while a cab is $25 for the group.

omg, i had no idea that a cab had a group rate and that the cost to the resort would be $25. i had understood the fee was per person and per mile.

thanks for the info.:)

Well, that was the fee last time we went through SNA, anyway. Could be higher now, though.

They showed off the gold mouse ears at the 50th announcement last year, and in the Rose Parade float. They're supposed to be available for purchase this year - I'm guessing after May 5th.

I wonder if they will use the yellow stitching on these. You won't be able to read your name.

Thanks for the info CP;)

Hopefully they will use black or blue stitching on the gold mouse ears.

mousepod 02-14-2005 01:44 PM

I want to make rezzies for the Park Inn. Is $111 (at Expedia) the best deal?

wendybeth 02-14-2005 01:47 PM

Is that for a regular room (standard)? I had quotes from the Park Inn website for $125 for an executive room, whatever that is...

mousepod 02-14-2005 02:11 PM

Yeah, it's for the single room double occupancy with a king-size bed. A couple bucks more for two queen-size, and $134 for a "1 bedroom suite".
The thing about Expedia is that you have to pay up front for the whole deal (three nights @ $111 + tax = $$)...

MickeyLumbo 02-14-2005 10:59 PM

my .02

if you don't need park hopper tickets... take the deal and do it pronto!

Morrigoon 02-25-2005 12:17 AM

Thought I'd bring this up again. Of the links I provided, I bought a pattern, and, as you can see from my avatar, I'm going to make it in "old tram" colors!

Has anyone else had any further thoughts on this topic?

Tito's Kitten 02-25-2005 12:25 AM

I totally want to dress up. Except I want a real Donna Reed type outfit with white gloves and a hat. How can you not have white gloves and a hat????

Morrigoon 02-25-2005 12:35 AM

You SO could! Actually, my outfit would go quite nicely with a wide-brimmed hat and a pair of little white gloves!

Morrigoon 02-25-2005 12:36 AM

Incidentally, i provided links to tons of cute outfits that could do it for ya. Look earlier in this thread for them!

wendybeth 06-26-2005 11:36 PM

I just thought I'd resurrect this thread, seeing how it's less than three weeks away, and a swanky e-vite got me all jazzed about it! I thought it might be interesting to see how many of the original players and plans are still in effect.

I am still flying down there, and will arrive on the 16th, although my stupid airlines changed our arrival time from 12:00pm to 2:00 pm, which means I'll have to spend a bit of time in the SeaTac bar......;) We are still staying at the Park Inn International, and we still intend to invade iSm and Zapp's DLH suite when we arrive.:D (I'll bring a suite warming gift). I am also very excited about Zapp's great E-ticket idea, which I hope he has decided to go through with, as it rocks!

I spoke on the phone today with my traveling friend, who is a casual Disney enthusiast, and with whom we went to DL last year. She is totally excited about this- her WDT agent was so enthusiastic about her travel time, and I guess he went on and on about what a great time it was going to be during the birthday, and gave her hints and strategies about the 17th. (Which have all been covered here ad nauseum). I suspect it was ML, by the way she described him.

Okay, how are everyone elses plans shaping up?

surfinmuse 06-27-2005 12:46 AM

Mousepod, is there an interesting backstory to that little gem of an audio clip? Did it go out live on radio or...?

blueerica 06-27-2005 07:27 AM

My plans are still in effect, and possibly more in tact than I could have ever imagined, thanks to some crafty vacation days I've decided to take. Leaves me open for a weekend of total fun and debauchery! Oh yeah! Plus, I took off Monday. :smart girl:

€uroMeinke 06-27-2005 12:12 PM

I'll be in chicago the week before, and my boss keeps trying to make me extend my stay through Firday the 15th, but I asked for it off in the beginning of the year and have been standing firm - not sure of the exaxt plans yet, but I'll be flying home on Thursday to be at the park on Friday.

BarTopDancer 06-27-2005 01:32 PM

In honor of this wonderful weekend my office has decided to close at noon.

OK, not really in honor if it, but we are closing at noon. Not sure if I'll be going to the park or what Friday. I'll be there sometime on Saturday and Sunday for sure.

Have no idea what plans/parties are in being planned, where any meets are or anything, so if someone wants to fill me in that would be awesome.

And I have Monday off.

innerSpaceman 06-27-2005 05:57 PM

Lordy, every moment of far-beyond 50 hours is jammed with stuff.

There's a really swanky cocktail party as a sort of kick-off event on Friday night that looks to be ultra-cool. I'd hep you all to where that is, but I think the hosts have limited the invite list to 50 people to coincide with the anniversary in some sort of Baggins going-away party mode. (ok, i made that up)

Saturday is phase one of the Disneyland thru the Decades Attraction Quest, and everyone is invited to play along - with start time and location to be announced. We're gonna try to hit 6 attractions that day - one from each decade plus one from opening day. Then there's some park meets and cocktail meets from various Disney websites, a couple of which I will try to attend. I have a feeling there will be late-night shenanigans at the Park Inn International on Harbor, where many of the hard-partying out-of-towners will be staying.

Sunday's the big-day and we are going to start the second phase of the Disneyland thru the Decades Attraction Quest pretty much right after park opening - with a run thru the Fantasyland Castle, a ride on Peter Pan, and then five more in quick succession before the Park gets too crowded to move. There's some kind of ceremony at 4:30 that afternoon. I'll probably camp out for fireworks on the birthday, because there won't be much moving around in the heavy crowds expected for that day. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join me (us) in the hub, where we will be recounting all of our favorite personal Disneyland experience stories through the ages. Natch, we'll all be staying in the Park till final Main Street closing, and the crowds might even thin around 11:30!

Some of us are even going to be in the Park on Monday, the 18th (which, ahem, is the anniversary of the Park opening to the public). It will be nice to do some Disneyland with (hopefully) sparser crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere as the conclusion of the marathon anniversary experience.

I'm sure more news of parties and meets and whatnot will keep coming up for the next 3 weeks. It's going to be the busiest, and most fun, weekend - like ever!

blueerica 06-27-2005 06:50 PM

God F-ing bless you iSm :iSm:

BarTopDancer 06-27-2005 07:15 PM

The nearest Barnes and Noble to Disneyland is at the Orange Town & Country, 791 South Main Street, Suite 100. However, I don't think they carry any Hewlett Packard products.

i will be staying at the DLH ... i checked for room rates at Best Western park Place Inn this morning... a standard room is available for $400.00 PER NIGHT!

i think i must be crazy to adventure into this capacity crowd and predictable heat... oh no, i haven't forgotten the line for Peter Pan last year.... i would be DEAD if it wasn't for KB and the glorious water bottle spritz.

i may not be able to keep up with you youngsters hitting all the attractions... i may need to find a shady bench and just chill.

party at DLH - how swanky!

We still haven't decided on driving vs flying - but either way, we'll be in on the evening of the 15th - Park Inn for 3 nights. I think the plan will be to dive into the crowd, relax our muscles and let the tide carry us through...

That's our plan, basically.

This time, we're playing tag-along. We'll do whatever others do, and if people split for different ideas, we'll decide who to follow. It'll be too insane for my brain to work any beter than that. I'll be glad of those that take initiative, especially iSm and zapp, those wonders of DL anniversary planning.

I'm totally excited!

Not Afraid 06-28-2005 10:32 AM

We're up fpr whatever and, if I split for a rest in the AC somewhere, I have my cell phone. We'll have our Aerobed in the car - just in case. But, I've not made too many big plans.

Oh, thank goodness for Compass Books, cause the weekend wouldn't be complete without other pop-culture giants throwing in their two scents. Buying Harry Potter is a MUST, but the reading of it is going to have to wait till later (though maybe we can read a chapter or two aloud while fireworks camping).

That other pop-culture phenom, Johnny Depp as the new Willy Wonka via the madness of Tim Burton, will have to wait till -- hmmm, maybe Monday at the AMC. Let's have all the weekend's non-Disney pop-culture intrusions come to us at the resort!

Ugh, I don't know how I'm gonna make it to late-night shenanigans at the Park Inn ... a bunch of folks I know are clamoring for our copyrighted Disneyland Hotel / Tower of Terror Elevator Experience after a drink or two at the Lost Bar late Saturday night.

I have a feeling I'm going to be pulled in twelve directions, with too many sophiechoices to make between fun and fun.

Not Afraid 06-28-2005 02:02 PM

Meanwhile, I will be crashed out on my Aerobed in your suite. Oh, and bring the lube. ;)

innerSpaceman 06-28-2005 03:09 PM

I think visitors to the suite following Tower of Terror Disneyland Hotel style might just wake you up. (If only to ask you to pass the lube)

blueerica 06-28-2005 03:47 PM

:iSm: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways... :iSm:

Monorail Man 06-28-2005 08:02 PM

Sounds like fun. I have no real plans, except to go that day and buy a new AP and just hang out in the 70,000+ people. Can't wait! :)

Am I correct in assuming that this means drinky drinky then drop-y drop-y?

Well let's see... Wicked, check, Harry Potter, check, party, check, 17th, check! Looks like I've got that weekend all planned out!

wendybeth 06-29-2005 10:39 PM

We got our WDT stuff today- all in a nifty gold binder with little compartments for the organizationally impaired. (To be honest, I liked the cool plastic ones from last year better, but it still looks snazzy.) Betwixt that, the E-vite, and all this talk, I'm thinking things are gonna get fun real soon.:D

iSm, you shall have to try and make a Park Inn appearance as well, if only for the photo ops.;) Provided, of course, you manage to kick us out of your swanky DLH digs.

MickeyLumbo 06-29-2005 10:43 PM

i put in some OT putting nifty gold binders together over the weekend... ;)

wendybeth 06-29-2005 10:45 PM

I have to admit, I was getting a little nervous, ML- usually we get them three weeks out.

MickeyLumbo 06-29-2005 10:48 PM

swampped doesn't even come close to describing it.

 glad it arrived!!

wendybeth 06-29-2005 10:57 PM

I knew that was probably the case.

Thank you, dear. It was way cool getting it today!:snap:
