Make it work! [Project Runway]
Not Afraid watched TV! Holy crap!
We must now discuss this show. I am a devoted watcher. Nothing is better than last year's Andrae and Tim go to Red Lobster story. However, I am enjoying this season. Tonight was the big "shocker" where someone got kicked off for having reference materials in their room. I will wait to reveal. I disagree with who they said was the loser, although those pants were pretty bad. "Carry on!" |
Oh! I will be glued to my set to see who gets axed!
I LOVE Project Runway, even though it is a blatant commerical. How many times can Tim Gunn say Macy's Accesories wall, Tresseme Hair Salon and Loreal? It's like a car wreck and I love it! Andrae, what happened to Andrae? I love Tim Gunn!:snap: |
I used to work at a place adjacent to JOhn Wayne Airport - I loved eating my lunch by the runway watching the planes take off and land. I always left thinking that flight was obviously impossible.
|
Even BT loves Project Runway. I'm not totally into this season yet, although I kind of like the pagent designer's work.
|
I turned on my TV today because I didn't want to clean. (It takes desperate measures.) I watched 2 1/2 back to back episodes of Project Runway. I was going to only sit for a bit, but one was good (I missed what the challenge was), then they had to work in pairs to design a dress for Miss Universe to wear in the Miss World pagent. I was going to turn it off but the next challenge was to design an outfit for "America's Fagorite Fashion Accessory". I KNEW right away was they were talking about and, when you're going to show puppies, I'm so THERE!
Anyways, I missed tonight's show but it is on again in a hour, so hopefully I will see who gets kicked off. I was sad for the gay ENglishman who lost (sob) and I so wanted that messy bitch to get the axe in the gown episode. Anyways, I'm not sure I can say I'm addicted but I know where I'll be in, oh, 18 minutes. |
I propose that "Fagorite" be added to the Lexicon of Swank.
|
I like the pageant guy, the Barbie guy and Uli the best so far.
Malan (the English wanna-be guy) was annoying. During the "tryouts" one of the judges looked at the others and asked if that was a real accent. I about cried laughing. 4 minutes to go and I will be parked in my chair with a very heavy boy on my lap (he likes it too). |
I enjoy watching it but don't go out of my way to catch it. Eventually I see all the episodes in reruns.
|
Oh, and the guy with the tattoo on his neck...it makes him look like a Cardassian.
|
Well, he's was getting a but upity anyways, but take responsability doll face. You f'ed up!
Angels is the Messy bitch I refered to earlier and she really turned it around. I don't understand how there could've been 2 BORING outfits when the parameters are to design for I.N.C. That's such a classic RTW line that's been around for YEARS (it's Macy's exclusive or plain wrap line) and their clothes are always professional and hip. Not a real big challenge. Oh well. Now, someone just needs to poke me next week at about 9:00 so I watch the next episode. |
The bottom two were rightly chosen. However, did you agree that Robert's was better than Bonnie's? I just thought the whole parka over a suit was bizarre. I actually liked Bonnie's as a unit, although those pants were pretty awful. I suppose it was too much rehash.
|
Bonnie's was a bit dated, but it worked so well with the afro-model I sort of liked it (and I've always liked brown and pale pink together). Robert's ensemble was ot only poorly constructed but not atractive at all. Wearing an anorak over a sexy skirt is one big fashion faux pas, IMHO.
|
There seemed to be a big issue about the pant fabric in Bonnie's outfit which I couldn't really analyze through the teevee screen, but if it was truly awful I could see cutting her. I don't get the tirade about the cowl neck though.
I'm totally shocked that Angela's team won the challenge. It was shocking enough that her design was picked. I wonder if she'll hold up, though. A big key to her win seems to be that she's a way better manager of other people than she appears. I don't know that she personally has the construction skills to keep up with the others on individual challenges. Also, she needs that collaboration to keep her embellishment ideas grounded. Without her teammates I think the jacket would have been festooned with rosettes. I don't think "less is more" is something she usually considers. (Says the person currently wearing her husband's Animal t-shirt to work because vacation starts tomorrow and she couldn't bring herself to wear work clothes today.) |
I didn't get the outrage over cowl necks either. The latest Anthropologie catalog had a new cowl neck sweater featured that I was drooling over.
|
They're everywhere! I've been having trouble finding sweaters that AREN'T cowl necks - which on a short stubby gal such as myself is a phenomenally bad look. I mean, it's already out so it's not super new, but it's not like it's super super dated like it was made out to be. Whatsherface editor chick acted like it was the biggest fashion sin ever.
|
Yes. I am mourning the return of the tunic-length sweater. My short legs and full hips do not thank you, gods of fashion!
|
I watched an episode of this the other day when they made a dress for some Miss USA/America to wear for another pageant. The dress they picked was nice and had faux jewelry around the neck.
I felt sorry for the middle aged guy with the glasses making the green dress. He was paired up with Miss "This isn't my vision" Lady. She did NOT get axed at the end of the show and I thought she should have. The queen with the black hair got axed. But his dress was awful, too. |
And, I'm LOVING tunics. The shorter tops of recent fashion, combined with lower rise pants, have made every shirt a belly shirt for me - and I should NOT be wearing belly shirts. Actually, no one under 17 should be wearing belly shirts, IMHO. I am very long waisted and I find I look thinner with a tunic top worn with long, straighter leg pants or even close crops.

Here here to both of the above.
I have the same problmes with the shorter shirts, long waist plus boobage makes them way way too short - bleh. I'm all for any trend in longer shirts. |
And see - I am extremely short waisted, so short tops/low jeans just look normal on me. Long tops make me look like a potato with legs.
On the topic of the show - I have to disagee with you a bit GC - I think Angela was a bit of a naysayer on his dress, but I also think that his dress sucked and it seemed to me like he wouldn't let her do anything. He appears to have difficulty delegating. Oh, and who besides me wishes that faux-British guy hadn't backed out of being on season 2? Him and Santino in the same show? THAT would have been fun! |
|
So, a miracle happened. I actually remembered to turn on the TV on the proper night at almost the proper time! I missed the first 15 minutes of last night's show, but I got most of it.
Anyone else see it? |
I did!!! Can you beleive it?
|
I thought some of the outfits were absolutely amazing. I like Bradly, but what an uninspired outfit. Robert needed lots of polish and maybe some large buttons. I could design a better outfit for Jackie O.
Spoiler:
|
I TIVO'd it, I'll be watching tonight.
|
I still don't have all their names down, but the "Cher" sucked. I liked the front of the "Marilyn", but I didn't like the butt. And the "Hepburn" chick sure did surprise again!
|
I guess I should be using spoiler tags.

Oh shoot... NA, please spoiler tag me.

I love the work that Kayne does. I like the layering to the fabrics. I didn't like the back of that dress, though. I felt that the right person won this week. I am also surprised that not much was said, or that what might have been said was edited out, about that Madonna monstrosity. That outfit was hideous. It probably doesn't help that I can't stand that particular designer.
|
I liked the Monroe dress done by Kayne, but I don't like him. There's something about him I do not care for at all. Just a quirk.
The Madonna dress was awful as were the Cher, Twiggy and Jackie O. The Hepburn was, like all of her work so far, beautiful. But I find her stuff too tailored and a bit dull. Works for her though. |
I really like Robert, and am pulling for him. So far most of his stuff has left me underwhelmed.
Laura's stuff is just soooo not my thing. I think she has what it takes, but I agree, it is all just too tailored. I couldn't put my finger on what I didn't care for. Thank You SF, that was it. I was pleased with who won and lost. It was amazing to see the difference between the 2. Both were pants, but 1 didn't give the model such a horrid camel toe that they could only show her from the waiste up. |
How the hell did Vincent not get eliminated last night? That thing was a pile-of-crap monstrosity! Laura was right, the model couldn't even walk properly in it! Then Vincent kept saying how his crappy dress "got him off." That made me want to hurl. Dude, I don't want to know what gives you a hardon.
I will miss Alison. She was cute and had good energy. Jeff sure is catty; his comments regarding Michael's outfit after he lost were just sour grapes. I'm really liking Michael. He's staying out of the drama and focusing on making good outfits. :) I am actually a Laura fan, although I probably could never wear her clothes. I'm not tall enough! She has awesome tailoring skills; I loved her coat that she made in the first challenge. |
Michael is a total shock to me. Because of his background, I didn't expect him to be as good as he is.
But I think something is seriously wrong with Vincent. His comments were totally creeping me out in a wacko sadist/misogynist way. I loved that Laura took him on at the end, even if Laura's own outfit was giving her pancake boobs. |
I watch the show and enjoy everything up to the final eviction. As the credits note, the show's producers play a role in determing who stays and goes and it seems pretty obvious that they play a large role in making sure the people left keep the drama level high.
|
Finally caught up with everyone. Michael's was fine, except I hated the plastic "wrap" but I thought Jeffrey's dress should have won the day. Vincent should be gone, but you know they are keeping him for drama (call it the Season 1 Wendy Pepper syndrome, he even looks like her)
Laura did another really boring and predictable plain dress. Kayne was just a mess, I felt bad for him, especially when Tim came up to him an hour before the deadline. Allison had misfortune, but I felt based on previous showings, she can design and Vincent shoul d have been the one to go. Of course, Alex's post points out exactly that the producers have the final say and this is all about TV and not fashion. But, it is fun. |
I forgot to watch it - which is the way with me and TV. I'm sure I can see a re-reun at some point this week.
|
As much as I agree that the producers saved Vincent's backside on this one, Alison's model looked HORRID in that design - yes it's supposed to be 'high fashion' which has a specific body-type in mind, and her model doesn't fit that, but you can't make her look that wide and call it 'good'.
And for high fashion, it doesn't matter if you can walk! TOTALLY agree with Steph about Vincent's comments on his dress. Ewww. I like Laura's stuff, generally - and if I ever got to my goal weight, I probably COULD wear it, but I really didn't like that the outfit she wore was so close (at least as far as 'neckline' goes) to what she designed. Ok, I couldn't wear that dress, gravity and that style don't go together unless you're willing to look like (as Prudence said) you have pancakes. (And then you have to have help from Mother Nature to make that happen!) |
So what did everyone think?
Robert's model looked so uncomfortable on the runway, although she said that she liked the dress. I agreed with the panel that he should have gone with something more interesting than black. He should have gotten a more interesting print fabric with black as the dominant color. I loved Uli's outfit. She really has a great eye for getting just the right fabric. |
I have to wait for a re-run!!! I didnt get to see it last night! Sobs!!
I ran to bravo to see who left, and watch the exit interview, so I'm not i the dark , at least not totally |
I totally forgot it was on and just hopped into bed when I got home so as to get the whole rotten day over with ASAP.
I'll have to watch it tomorrow. I think it reruns at 5. |
I didn't realize that each dress from each show was auctioned off. It's interesting to see how much the various things go for, particularly in relation to the judges comments.
|
I thought Tat Boy's dress was the most hideous thing on the planet, but I also took a dislike to Angela's Mom right off. I see where Angela got it from. "Nobody talks to me that way:sog:" Give me a break!
But, Robert is boring. He has been boring throughout. He played to safe once too often and I think the judges made the right choice. |
Robert's dress was boring, but it didn't look hideous. Though I did disagree with Angela's Mom on not liking the Periwinkle - I thought it was good next to her face. I'm almost thinking that she and tat boy (don't recall his name - love the nickname!) weren't communicating well - she wanted jewel tones, he sure wasn't hearing that! The neckline didn't lay right, either.
I think this was a case where the producers were involved in the decision a little too much (reminds me too much of the decision with the ice skating costumes in Season 1 where Santino got off the hook yet again) |
I thought Robert's dress was hideous. He fell back on that zomg! fat woman! standard of tank dress and big shirt over it. I mean, sure, it was wearable, but there was nothing designer about it. I mean, compared to Uli, no contest. And Kane's might not have been great, but at least he actually tried to make clothes and didn't just take the shapeless sack route.
but Vincent? Who knew he could make stuff that's not crap?! |
Just watched the rurun. This may be the first time I agreed with the selection for best and worst.
|

Yea, Vincent was a total shock to me, too! |
Yeah, but the other guy in the bottom two had to deal with Angela's mom, and that's such a burden. I know he's such a pita himself, but honestly! She clearly wasn't going to like anything, and she was going to make sure everyone knew what a victim she was. Even Laura's mom graciously did her best with Angela's creation, and it clearly wasn't her taste.
|
This episode just proves to me why it is so hard for me to find clothes that I like.

Well, I can't believe that Project Runway

I need to catch it again on a re-run because TIVO cut off the final minutes, much to my disgust. I liked Laura's cocktail dress and could not believe Kayne made it through except Spoiler:
Interesting to see what happens next week. Sorry for the overused spoiler tags, but not sure if anyone watched but me! |
Tat boy needs to have a house dropped on him.

Tat boy needs a meeting. But, his outfit was fitting.
Kayne was an embarassment. God HELP us all if he ever wore that in public. At least I'd laugh. Angela looked like a Jo-Anne's sales clerk threw up on her. I'm glad she's gone. I like Kayne but I don't think his style is very contemporary. Everyone else did a good job, I thought. I travel like Vincent, so I could relate to his outfit. I wish someone would send me to Paris! (But,I'd probably be sent home on the next plane ;)) |
So, does Angela get to fly back first class, too?
I didn't think they did a very good job of defining jet-setter - if it's just 'travel well' than Vincent should have won. The fit didn't look that great for the simple garments that they were, though. Kayne is still stuck in 'pagent-land' so I wasn't totally shocked by what he came up with - Uli's dress was boring - but I liked Laura's, tat' boy's, and Michael's stuff. Though Laura's was far from maternity-wear! Are the contestants prevented from contact with family? I wonder if they gave Laura an exception to contact her hubby with 'the news' that she let slip out to her Mom? |
Well, I could not sleep, so I got up in the middle of the night and the TV is ususaly the best tranquilizer (well, other than drugs) so I ended up watching the latest episode of PR.
I'm afraid to admit it, I liked Jeffrey's gown in this challenge. Laura, clearly a good technician, just bores the pants off me. Michael Kors was right, shorten it and the model would have looked just like a maid! They're keeping her around because she is good at what she does, from a technical standpoint. She's not innovative and has not won a challenge yet, I would not be suprised if she is next to go, aside from Kayne. |
Lani and I both loved Kayne's dress and hated Jeffrey's so we were at polar opposites from the judges on that. But then I'm going to have a problem with any dress, like Jeffrey's, that seems dedicated to exposing the crotch.
Otherwise we agreed with them on the other dresses. |

I couldn't figure out why they disliked Kayne's dress. I loved the colors and his dresses always seem to flow very nicely.
I felt bad for Michael. He put so much work into his, only to have eggs thrown at it. I like Uli's dresses, but the tops of them always seem off to me. I am just glad that Vincent is gone. Now if they will just Auf Laura I will be a happy camper. My prediction for the final 3 is Michael, Uli and Jeffery (even though he still reminds me of Gul DuCat from Star Trek: DS9). |

LOL He referred to them as clam shells, very mermaidy.

I think tat boy was the only one that really "got" the idea of couture - which, as far as I can tell, means "nothing a real person would ever wear." His looked like the weirdo stuff one sees in some big name fashion shows where that's what goes down the runway and what it means for real people is that cotton, plaids, and long skirts with walking slits are in. Everyone else seemed to really be making red carpet dresses. If someone wore tat boy's creation on the red carpet, they'd be on the fugly gals' site immediately. Whereas Kayne's dress would have been fabulous and everyone would have raved.
Are these filmed over a long period of time? Because Laura seemed noticably more pregnant here than she was when they flew out. |
I read "Tim's Take" on the Bravo website. It helped explain what "couture" is, mainly that it must involve certain elements, such as hand sewing or beading.
I missed the episode, but read the recap and saw the photos. I would say that I like Uli's dress a lot from the photos. |
So? Is tonight the night Laura get's auffed? Or will Kayne be the one who goes?
Laura, Uli, Kayne, Tat Boy and Michael are left, who's next? Laura has not won a single challenge, but Kayne, unless he keeps pulling himself together (like he did for the last one) might come up with some other horror. |
Well, I am caught up. I watched the Couture segment (LOVED Tat Boy's gown!), liked Laura's but agreed that it was a St. Laurant knock-off, and thought Uli's was dull (but it looked great on the French model). I thoght Vincent needed to get "Auf'ed" for that poorly designed and poorly constructed thing.
That episode was followed by this week's episode. WTF? Has anyone else seen it? I'm not going to write about it just yet because I'm too lazy to use spoilers and this is really spoiler worthy, IMHO. Soon. |
Yes, I watched it yesterday. I agreed with the final outcome of the episode all around. The stuff that belongs in spoilers really kind of irritated me, but no harm-no foul in the end.
Saw an interesting preview for the next show (I think they're taking next week off, but maybe they're doing the reunion show? I SUPPOSE I could go look it up - nah, not going to happen tonight) - something about not taking 3 designers to fashion week. |
I just watched it.
Spoiler:
|
It's been enough time - I'm not using spoilers.
I think Laura's dress was different from other things she'd designed, not necessarily different from what's out there in the world. Most women over 40 would not wear a baby-doll style dress, and most of the other stuff she's designed has been stuff she would wear. But why does designer have to be for 'young' women? I was almost relieved when Vincent and Angela totally played to form - so there was no worry about them winning and having 2 designers who were there rightfully, go. I think they made the right decision in who to eliminate, but if they'd had to eliminate two, Tat' boy was right there. I AM over 40, but there's no way I see that as appropriate attaire for a cocktail party. |
Project Runway Remix
I loved this :)
|
I don't remember what I last commented on, but I've been keeping up - a miracle for me and anything on TV. I so can't wait for next week but I really hope what they are trying to imply happens really happens.
Since I saw this week's episode on East Coast feed, I'll use spoilers: Spoiler:
|
Oh, and about the reunion show - Vincent is a piece of bad workmanship and a whiner and I STILL hate Angela AND her Mom. Manipulative b!tches - both of them.
|
Vincent is completely insane. And not in a "fun at parties" way.
I haven't watched the show yet this week, but I so don't want tat boy to win. He's such an smug, arrogant ass that I just dislike him and don't want him to get any more fame than he's already had. I think Uli and Laura are both one-note, in very different ways. But I like Laura better. Michael's my favorite. I'm afraid he's in over his head, but he just seems like a nice guy who doesn't need to destroy others to get ahead. He's so hit and miss though, it's hard to say. But throughout the season tat boy has been more couture, so he'll probably win. I'm not a fan of couture, but I know that's the game. |
Awww, I 've come to like Tat-boy, though he annoyed me at first. I like Michael too, but at least in the editing something's gone wrong with his designs in this last round.
|
I haven't liked much of what Jeffrey has done on the show but then I'm not much interested in couture but in a more practical approach to clothing.
But I think the show's history tilts strongly in his direction since the first two winners were of similar style and annoying attitude and neither has shown any actual ability to get a line off the ground since their time in the spotlight. That's one thing the show overlooks in picking "America's Next Designer." Top designers, for the most part, are not only artists but actually also good business people (or have a framework of good business people they can rely on). Of the four remaining people the one I see with any intersection of art and an ability to actually build on that is Laura. |
I was really surprised at how much I really did not care for Michael's designs, at least of what was shown hanging on the racks. The one gown he did looked very much like the purple gown he did for the final runway challenge, except now it is a patterned fabric. He was so spot on for so much of the competition, I wonder, what happened?
Tat boy has grown on me a bit. He's endearing with his kid and clearly a very proud papa. What I could see of his stuff looked interesting and much more stylish than previous. Laura's were stylish in the typical Laura way. I'm glad she offed that hideous olive green number, as she would have said, that was some serious ugly. I think she is a one note, at least in her vision, it works for her and I am sure it would work very well for the clientele she'd attract. Loved the red number with the spangles inside. Uli I cannot imagine winning. No matter which way you slice it, she is a one-note stylist. Works for her, but I can't see her winning the whole shebang. Going in to this I thought Michael was going to be a shoe in, he seemed the most consistent in many of the challenges. Now it's a toss up. I do know that when Fashion Week was going on Spoiler:
I had to laugh, every time Tim got in the Saturn, the product placement and the extreme close up of the logo on the front of the car to make sure the sponsor was happy. Of course, that has been true of each season, but it has seemed much more blatant this time around. |
Quote:
Angela, well I don't know what to say about her. I can't stand her clothes and I can't stand her. I'm with Lisa on this one, a manipulative bitch. |
So, anyone know the sotry of Laura? She OBVIOUSLY has money - that loft is INCREDIBLE. I know she is an architect but her husband must have money as well.

I liked the loft, but with the 5 kids, dayum, get some carpet to kill the noise! |
Peter Shelton of Shelton - Mindel & Associates. Primarily interior architects, they've won numerous design awards.
Here's an award winner. Here's another article. I love the internet. |
I'm torn between Michael & Jeffrey. I hate Jeffrey's snideness and arrogance but then his stuff is really new & fresh. At the same time I can't help but liking Michael but I do feel he's a little over his head. That last purple dress that Michael made didn't have anything to do with his real style. So I think he has to learn to think more "out of the box" like Jeffrey.
Can't wait for the finale! |
