Jean-Jacques Perrey is by no means a household name, yet if you've lived in Southern California for any length of time, you've heard his music. One of the pioneers of the synthesizer, Perrey was composing and arranging pieces using only layered synths practically as soon as the instruments were available. It's his music and performance you hear in Disneyland's famous Electric Parade. The 77-year-old French musician was pals with Salvador Dali, Jacques Brel and Jean Cocteau, worked with French artists ranging from Edith Piaf to Air, and his music has been sampled by Dr. Dre, Fatboy Slim, DJ Premier and many more. His show here- his first ever in Los Angeles- will feature a wealth of Perrey's anecdotes and stories as well as his one-of-a-kind music.
I really need a night off from wedding crap, so Ken and I have ordered tickets. :D

CoasterMatt 08-25-2006 05:47 PM

Isn't he gonna be there August 31?

Disneyphile 08-25-2006 06:51 PM

DOH!!! Yeah. Thursday, the 31st. I'm an idiot.

(Maybe a nice mod/admin will change the title and date for me. ;) )

Just from an electronic music history perspective this might be a show I'd regret missing never mind the Disney connection - and for $8? Time to check my calendar

Yep!! $8 for a Hollywood show. Can't beat that. :D

Hope you can join us! You two need some fun after this past weekend.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 08-27-2006 01:23 AM

wow! Sounds so cool. I will have to think about this one. Would be fun. I've been to the Knitting Factory before. It's an ok venue. Had to stand though.

Hmmmmmmmm.......

mousepod 08-30-2006 12:31 PM

You guys have got to go! If I was on the west coast this week, I'd be there. I met him earlier in the year - he recorded a message for the MousePod (I know, I know...), and signed a bunch of CDs, including a Japanese MSEP remix disc. Very nice guy... worth showing up just to give him your support.

€uroMeinke 08-30-2006 09:17 PM

Sadly, we have missed it, I hope somebody went and can report back.

CoasterMatt 08-30-2006 09:20 PM

I'm definitely going :D

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 08-30-2006 09:20 PM

It's tomorrow night. See CoasterMatt's comment. She put the wrong date. ;)

I"m going!!

€uroMeinke 08-30-2006 09:24 PM

Damn - well maybe

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 08-30-2006 11:41 PM

Cool. Hope you kids can make it!!

Gotta find my MSEP picture disk!

wendybeth 08-31-2006 12:09 AM

Heh heh- bit late, but I got around to changing the date. It sounds fun- I would like to be there. I love the MSEP music.

€uroMeinke 08-31-2006 08:25 AM

Ok, I got a ticket - I'll probably be at Hollywood & Highland around 6:00 or 6:30.

Hey, I didn't know that Bat's Day Noah is the promoter for this gig - should be an interesting crowd.

Disneyphile 08-31-2006 11:57 AM

WOOHOO!!! We'll get there probably just before the start of the show.

I've got my CD in the car, and a Sharpie.

Is NA coming too? :D

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 08-31-2006 03:02 PM

I'm up for some Ice Cream after, if anybody else is!

Maybe?

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 09-01-2006 12:35 AM

Wow. All I can say is that was really "odd".

I just can't belive I heard the "hoedown" played live! What a treat!

Thanks DP for letting us in on the event!

€uroMeinke 09-01-2006 01:14 AM

A truely awsome event and much needed after a long day at work. Jean-Jacques was a delight, telling stories of Salvadore Dali, and playing with his hand puppet elephant, "Mickey." I knew I'd hear Hoedown, but I was overwhelmmed at hearing it live. The rest of the set was spectacular, I wish this stuff played in Tomorrowland all the time. The man's a genius, and at age 77, I can only hope to be as fun loving as him at his age.

Word is, he'll be in the park tomorrow, and at the first showing of the Electrical parade at DCA - anyone going to be there?

CoasterMatt 09-01-2006 06:16 AM

Wonderful show!

It was like America Sings on acid! I haven't had as much sheer joy at a concert in a long time. Absolutely surreal moments were plentiful - the guy in front of us with absolutely wizard like yoyo skills (and he made it look so EASY), a room full of people standing and clapping along to Baroque Hoedown IN A NIGHTCLUB!, even better - the people wandering in from the adjoining Alterknit Lounge - where some punk band was playing. Really fun "WTF?!?" moment. During the Baroque Hoedown, I said to Noah K "I don't think I've ever seen something so surreal, even at Bat's Day" - he agreed :D

The new disc is tons of fun, and it won't even be released for another month :)

CoasterMatt 09-01-2006 12:40 PM

I've been listening to the CD off and on today - really cheery stuff to be yelled at by :D

Disneyphile 09-01-2006 12:54 PM

I'm STILL grinning from ear-to-ear. And, I'm still trying to talk my mom into going to DCA for tonight's parade. I've already got the camcorder charging, just in case.

CoasterMatt 09-01-2006 01:28 PM

I was getting screamed at a lil while ago, and I kept hearing 'Chicken On The Rocks' and GRINNING :D

That is SO funny!! I love it - it's like an audible shield against bad attitudes. :snap:

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 09-01-2006 07:45 PM

Don't forget the "special message" after the last track. Just let it play in silence and behold a whole other world of oddities. :)

€uroMeinke 09-02-2006 12:42 AM

While most of my pictures turned out like this:

(and I kick myself for only having a cell phone to take picture with) I did get a few better shots:

A "balanced" photo that reminds me of Wim Wenders dreaming:

And a photo of Jean-Jacques and ourvery own Borneo - Honest:

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 09-02-2006 03:01 AM

Aw, thanks E. You can just make out what shirt I was wearing! :)

The photo's are neat, in a Norma Desmond kinda way.

THANKS!!

dlrp_bopazot 09-19-2006 02:20 PM

you guys were lucky to see him . I hope he dedicated all your MSEP CD Cover .

I know him and met him several times event at the Last MSEP here at Disneyland Paris in 2003 .

It's a very nice guy . i'd love to see him in LA .

mousepod 09-21-2006 08:06 AM

His new CD is really fun! Thanks €uro!

Disneyphile 09-21-2006 10:40 AM

And, in honor of this great event and my all-time fave song, I ordered my custom license plates a couple weeks ago!

It reads:

BRQHDWN

:D

(Yeah, I'm a geek.)

I know it's slightly obscure, but I think with my MSEP license plate frame, some people will get it. Well, at least cool people will. ;)

CoasterMatt 09-21-2006 10:46 AM

Awesome!
