I can't access Lot from home!!

Saturday, I found that I can no longer access LoT from home - I get a "Server Not Found" message. I got the same result with both Firefox and IE.

I cleared my browser cache and flushed the DNS cache.
I looked up the IP and tried that.
I get no results when I try pinging the site
I tried accessing the site from the other 2 computers on my home network.
I bypassed the router and tried connecting directly through the DSL modem.
I tried connecting via dial-up (on my laptop, not the main desktop).

None of these things worked. I still could not access LoT (or any other pages at Lunarpages), but I could access other webpages.

I called my ISP (Earthlink). They said that the problem was not on their end. The Tech I spoke with was able to pull up LoT through Earthlink’s servers just fine.

I’m completely at a loss. Any ideas?

katiesue 09-05-2006 09:44 AM

I had the exact same problem. I thought maybe it was down for some reason. I had no problem with any other website I tried to access.

When I got into work this morning I could access with no problem and could see postings from all weekend so I thought it was just me.

Are you on Earthlink, by any chance?

katiesue 09-05-2006 10:17 AM

Yes, through Time Warner Cable.

RStar 09-05-2006 10:34 AM

Same here. Couldn't get on all weekend, but could from work. And I'm on Earthlink Time Warner Cable. What's up? Was it down, or just a cable issue?

BarTopDancer 09-05-2006 11:02 AM

Worked for me - I am on Cox cable though, no Earthlink.
Sorry guys. :(

Not Afraid 09-05-2006 11:16 AM

I'm suspecting an Earthlink issue. It seems the only people with problems have Earthlink accounts.

RStar 09-05-2006 11:17 AM

Yeah, I need to figure this out. I can't spend ALL my time at work on TLoT, LOL!

Nope. I have DSL.

Edited to add: I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one having this problem!

I wonder if this has anything to do with it.

If that's true, I'd be pretty pissed if I were a customer.

JW- I hope you can get it sorted out!

RStar 09-05-2006 12:32 PM

I got a "The page you are looking for cannot be found" error page, not a redirect to another website. And I could access all the other websites I visit. So I don't think that's it.

I'll see if I can access it tonight from home.

I even used my history to link to pages on TLoT I had previously viewed from home successfully. I assumed it was a server problem on TLoT's end.

Any news if that is true?

Anyone??

Class??

;)

This was my exact problem. And I tried the links from my history as well. No dice. And it didn't happen with any other site I was on all weekend.

It does show that Earthlink was making significant changes to it's DNS system. I could certainly see that resulting in spurious DNS errors like the unavailability of LOT.

If you get home and you still cannot reach Lot try bypassing DNS (as a test) by entering: 216.227.217.215 into yours browsers address bar.

Note: This will NOT get you to LoT but it should get to to their host site (lunapages.com). If you get that far then it's a DNS issue and we can fix it by creating a static DNS map for you, if not then something else is a play here.

Hopefully by now it's a non-issue for you.

RStar 09-05-2006 01:49 PM

Thanks, I'll try that and let you know, though it may be tomorrow at work.....

katiesue 09-05-2006 01:51 PM

I'll try as soon as I get home.

I tried entering a direct IP (not sure if it was the same one, i looked it up on SamSpade) this weekend, got the same error.

JWBear 09-05-2006 02:42 PM

Another thought. Can everybody who has Earthlink, and had/has a problem accessing LoT, call or email Earthlink Customer Support and report the problem. If enough of us complain, perhaps they will fix it.

katiesue 09-05-2006 03:01 PM

I'll call them when I get home. I tried thier e-mail form earlier but it kept hanging at one point and I couldn't get any further in the form.

RStar 09-05-2006 05:30 PM

Ok, I'm at home. The test failed (got the same error message).

So I live chatted, and it worked (as you can see). I told her that there were several Earthlink customers with this same problem, but I don't know that she will forward that to the complaint dept.

She had me choose a prefered DNS Server, and an Alternate DNS Server. So after I plugged that in it worked fine. I'd give the server numbers, but it may be different for some people, and my not be nice to post in a chat room (just in case).

So, I suggest going to the live chat if you have Earthlink. It's a shame they put their customers through this.

RStar 09-05-2006 05:33 PM

You are a geek, Matt. ;)

I like this phrase from the website:

"I pwn your sister... all night long."

katiesue 09-05-2006 06:02 PM

I got mine working with the same process RStar used. I also mentioned it wasn't just my problem others had it as well.

Stan4dSteph 09-05-2006 07:54 PM

Drince is also having problems.

Good, maybe they will take notice then.....

It was a long weekend without you guys. I checked in several times a day to see if it was working (Thought it was the servers on the TLoT side). I could have fixed it earlier if I'd known.....

UGGG!

Drince88 09-06-2006 09:54 AM

As Steph said, I was having the same issues. Now that I know it's not on the LOT side of things, they'll be getting contact from me, too.

Ghoulish Delight 09-06-2006 10:10 AM

Don't know if these will work for everyone, but 202.27.184.3 and 202.27.184.5 are DNS server addresses that at least one Earthlink customer has been given as a work around. You could give those a try while waiting for a response from customer service.

katiesue 09-06-2006 10:23 AM

Those are the ones that earthlink gave me last night and they worked for me.

Drince88 09-06-2006 05:53 PM

I'm going through a proxy server right now. Neither of the DNS server addresses work for me. I need to go get back with them, since I"ve now rebooted, and get this fixed so I can type in the url.

And 'oh, it's not an Earthlink issue' - bull pucky. The only people who can't get to LOT are earthlink customers and they USED to be able to get to it, so YOU (earthlink) clearly changed something.

Can you tell I'm a little peeved?

CoasterMatt 09-06-2006 05:56 PM

Well, if anybody in SoCal is interested in a reliable ISP, check out www.dslextreme.com

I've been with them for several years now, and it's been a wonderful time.

Yup, those are the ones they gave me.

Great, now the servers will be overloaded and shut down.

Thanks for posting them GD!;)

I've been with Earthlink for about 8 years now, and this is the first problem I've had, and a chat and 10 minutes later it was fixed. I'll cut them some slack this time.

JWBear 09-06-2006 07:04 PM

Well... I reconfigured the router to use the DNS addresses GD posted. I still can't bring up LoT on m desktop computer, but now I can from the laptop (via a wireless connection to the router).

Drince88 09-06-2006 07:23 PM

This is the first issue I've had with them that wasn't easily resolved. None of the options they gave me except the proxy server (which is molasses-like) worked - they said they'd escalate to the engineers and that he thought it was on the Earthlink side of things (wow, you think?)

I'd consider switching to a cable-system, but I was able to come home a lot earlier last year because my phone (and therefore my DSL) was working a couple of weeks before my cable was working. I felt for the neighbors that have ALL their communication through Cox Cable. I can work from home if I can't work from the office only if I have a high-speed connection.

Ghoulish Delight 09-06-2006 10:10 PM

From what I've seen, they've known about this problem for 4 days and still haven't come up with a permanent fix.

I agree. I've always been more than satisfied by Earthlink's technical support. I have a feeling that their IT people are just as stumped by this one as we are - so I'll cut them some slack.

Ghoulish Delight 09-07-2006 04:32 PM

Anyone still having issues?

Another set of DNS servers to try...

207.69.188.100
207.69.188.101

RStar 09-07-2006 05:57 PM

Well, I lost my ability to access the internet (all pages) even though I was still connected....

The chat tech told me to change from "Obtain IP address atomatically" to use a specific IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. I switched it back to automatic, and I got right on.

Kevy Baby 09-07-2006 08:35 PM

I'm having the same problem. I have earthlink. I can connect through Susan's computer (which is where I am writing from), but not mine.

I give live support a try. I too have been happy with Earthlink, though I am not happy about what I am paying ($50/mo.). I need to get off my lazy butt and get them to lower my rate

I have Time Warner cable, and have unlimited phone, cable TV Basic with one package), and internet access. I have had no problems at all, and pay just a little over $100 for all including taxes and equipment rentals.

Drince88 09-08-2006 05:53 PM

After not being able to connect except through a proxy site, I was able to get in now by actually typing letters! Yea, hopefully they got it!

I think the Earthlink people must have done something. I was just perusing through the LoT, came across this thread and remembered that there was a problem.

I had never got around to contacting Earthlink.

Really? I have the Star Trek Omnipedia Program that looks like the Star Trek computers and even has Mrs. Roddenberrys' voice, and is run by voice recognition (the "Computer" part is only for MAC. PC runs the same way, just without saying "Computer". Darn). But I didn't know if they had a VR for running different programs yet.

So, if true, how does it run for you?

CoasterMatt 09-09-2006 08:31 AM

I didn't say it actually responded, but I do have a button on my keyboard programmed to open a browser and head to the Lounge ;)
