Question for all you girls
Well girls I want to start dressing cuter then I have been Any suggestions on how to go about it. Thanks :)
|
I pretty much only wear black, so I am no help in this department. Do you have a friend or relative whose style you admire? My kid loves that show 'What Not to Wear', and it's really pretty informative once you get past all the snarky comments.

Find a good friend that has the fashion sense you agree with and go on a shopping spree. Take several hours to do so. Have a fab lunch with him/her and talk shop and shopping.
I've done this before. (Long long ago...) It's fun. Fashion Island comes to mind or South Coast Plaza... :) |
It's all about your own personal style! What fabrics, colors, textures do you like? What makes you feel confident? What makes you feel sexy? What makes you feel happy? What kid of an image do you want to project?Sometimes shopping in new stores (off the beaten path, for instance) also sparks your fashion plug!
Me, personally? I want to project "hip fat girl." Or "smart fat girl." I seek out what flatters me primarily, and go with classic standards but purchase one or two pieces each season that go with the trends. Above all, I find accessories that are either 1) trendy, but not expensive or 2) something that goes with my personal artistic taste-- which is outside of 'trend' but carries its own stylish weight. I love scarves, interesting earrings, unique-looking necklaces... etc. But that's all me, lady, it depends on your own tastes and your desired image! |
I'd recommend going into every store you can get your hands on and trying on everything. Seriously. There were so many styles/colors I was convinced that I "couldn't wear" or that "weren't comfortable" that I never even tried them. Once I opened myself up to possibilities I found so many new things! If it looks hideous, only you and the dressing room mirror (and maybe your best friend with great fashion sense) will know, and you will be just that much fashion-smarter for the experience.

I agree. Try different things/styles. I've found quite a few things I get compliments on that I had serious doubts about even trying on. And some of the books were helpful, for general ideas like what kinds of clothes to look for that flatter your particular body type.

I've been dressing way less cute. My closet of clothes is old and haggard. I'm chomping at the bit for the H&M to open at the Beverly Center.
H&Ms are gold, if you live near one. |
I only wear what my woman lets me...

What Not To Wear is a fantastic resource for ideas and fashion advise. They cover a wide spectrum of people and their tastes.
Just remember, you don't have to go to an extreme to add a little "cute" or "girly" into your wardrobe. A little goes a long way. Skirts, frilly tops, and even girly accessories help. It really depends on what you want to do! Honestly, WNTW has helped me immensely. They've given out a lot of advise that I've applied to my personal wardrobe to help snap it up some. Its amazing how simple it can be. |

Stacy and Clinton! The Brits have my vote. S&C pale in comparison.
|
I agree. Trinny & Susannah rule!
|
I used to be the total tom boy. Total. Ask Erica. She pretty much fainted the day I wore pink.
I'm still not super girly. I don't like skirts or dresses. But, a frilly top, or lace can add a world of girly to an outfit. Cute shoes can add a world of girly too. But I have to say, the few times I've seen you you were dressed girliyish. I'm sure Allybell will be here shortly. I can see the radar spinning. SHe is the girlie queen. |
I've been adding gobs of pinstripes to my wardrobe. Not sure why - just all the cute pants seem to be pinstripes.
I frequently have my mom shop for me, so I add my voice to those that suggest taking along someone who's good at it. |
re WNTW (and that show changed my fashion life): I love Stacy and Clinton...the Brits are waaaaay too serious about it -- geez it's only clothes!
Anyway, I used to pretty much only wear black, and was overly-modest...now, well all that has changed! I threw my old rule-book out and now will try anything on. It's very freeing and fun! |
Another vote for WNTW. They provide enough general tips and tricks to help out anyone watching, not just the person being made over.

I love that they talk about tailoring because there's this expectation that clothes should just fit off the rack, and if they don't there's something wrong with you. And they don't fit and that happens to LOTS of people. So now I don't have to worry that things don't fit just right in the store - they never will. I just have to find the pants that are long enough and fit around my butt and JuHee will shorten the rise and take in the waist.
At first I was upset when they replaced the other guy with Clinton after the first season. I didn't "get" Clinton at all at first. But now I think he's great. |
One tip I got was if you like to wear sweats all the time then invest in nicer set. Still comfy but you don't look like such a schelp.

So much great advice here.
One rule I have is, Not too big...not too small. Either is not flattering. Did I miss it...are you looking for casual clothes, go out clothes, or work/business clothes? Oh, another rule. Do NOT pull off the tags/throw away receipts until you are certain you will keep it/like it/fits. Make sure and decide/try it out/on before the return date expires. It SUCKS to have clothes you wish you'd returned in your closet and there is no reason you can't change your mind and take something back. When you go back, you'll probably find something else, too. Oh, and don't forget the right shoes. I would go for styles that are most comfortable to you...at first. Gradually work up to higher heels {if you want to}. They do make the legs look nice, I like the ones with the straps around the ankles as well as boots are back for the winter.... Mostly... Have Fun!!! |
