Carol Channing on The Gays
Check out this article/interview of the inimitable Carol Channing from Evenings Out in Ohio. Certainly not what I would have expected to hear from her. Do you think she was just confused?
|
I saw this the other day and was somewhat surprised to read what she had said. I'm not really sure how to take it though. Seems she would want to be a little more careful about possibly alienating her fans so it seems strange that she would answer the questions in that way, regardless of the publication. The possibility exists that her mind is slipping a bit. She is in her 80's. Strange interview though.
I think this is my favorite quote: Quote:

It's not just the weird quotes with regards to her gay fans- did you catch this?:
KK: As revealed in your biography “Just Lucky I Guess,” you found out later in life that your father was of African-American origins. Did you ever feel betrayed that you weren’t told that right from the start? CC: No. I didn’t even know it would matter, that reporters would ask questions. [It did] not change my relationship with him at all. But I did finally realize why I sang so well, why I danced do well. Everyone’s race is something to be proud of. I’m terribly proud of it. I was very close to him and loved him dearly. He was the kindest, most spiritually minded person I knew. While I'm glad she loved her father, I couldn't help but be a bit taken aback at the 'singing and dancing' remark. I think she is most definitely slipping, but she is getting up there. |
Hey 7 guys doing Carol Channing is not an image I need burned into my mind....

I'm just thinking of that voice....... "Give it to me, big boy!" "Thanks, and now you, you even bigger boy!" "Thank you. I'm ready for another. Come to mama!!!!" ...... |
Hmm, color me puzzled as to why everyone is saying "she's slipping" instead of actually being hurt and angry. I never knew what she felt about the gay community before - why should I feel this is due to her old age? Anytime any other celebrity would say such things you guys would tear into them. Why are you guys cutting her a break?

I'm just posting so Munch and Aleister's pics can be near one another. :)

I know many people from her generation and little 'comments' like the singing and dancing thing are fairly common amongst them. They were sandwiched between the very prim and prejudiced Edwardian age and the anything-goes Boomers. They were largely brought up (and I know I'm generalizing here, so bear with me) under a certain set of rules and then later in life they did a lot of revising of those rules. I think Carol has lived her life for the most part as a fairly liberal and kind person, and I do think that she is probably beginning to slip a bit. From what I understand dementia is somewhat exponential- roughly 85% of 85 year olds will have it in some form and degree. I can only speak for myself- so far, she does get a pass with me but only just. I hope she doesn't keep on like this- it would be a sad blight on an otherwise remarkable career.

I think judged from her past connections with Pride events, earlier comments about gays, etc., that it does seem that she is slipping. Even in that interview she seemed to jump from topic to topic. I hope when I get old I just get more and more offensive to the religious right.

OMG! I"Ve never seen the appeal of Carol Channing beyond a great belly laugh. I"m glad she's made millions making someone happy, but I just don't get it. But 7 guys? Doing her? OMG! I'd just as soon learn about Walt and Lily's orgies. Geeez!

According to her publicist the reporter misquoted Ms.Channing.
For example: the report claimed that Carol said " I’m knee-deep in the Bible and you know what it says about that." What Carol actually said was " You know what the Bible says about it ... Nothing." |
And unless I missed something, misquoted or not, all she expressed was a disinterest in gay issues, not any particular disdain.
"Not my problem" is hardly the biggest slur a faggot might encounter. |
Unless you get the paramedics involved...
|
And she's hardly the first person to make a joke about black people having more rhythm and better dance skills than white people.
|
You know, Carol Channing is also a comedienne... could some of these remarks have been attempts at jokes that just don't fly well in print?
edit: having read the whole thing now... I think she's losing it. |
She's been working as a speechwriter for John Kerry :)
|
I always said Carol Channing was not quite right up there. I guess this is more proof.
(Hoping not to offend Carol Channing fans out there) :) |
Here's an article discussing the misquotedness of the original article.
:D |
And here's another.
