The song in my head...

Anyone for Tennis (Savage Seven Theme) - Cream

Quote:

Twice upon a time in the valley of the tears
The auctioneer is bidding for a box of fading years
And the elephants are dancing on the graves of squealing mice.
Anyone for tennis, wouldn't that be nice?
I have had this in my head all day, and almost was going to quote it in the quote-a-thon. I actually have a tendency to want to quote the songs that run through my mind... So I'm giving myself a new outlet...

What's the song in your head?

€uroMeinke 02-09-2005 10:50 PM

Cole Porter - You Do Something to Me

mistyisjafo 02-09-2005 10:54 PM

I have had the damn hamster dance song stuck in my head for days now. I have no idea where it came from. I'm trying to replace it but nothing is sticking. I can feel the last grasp of sanity slipping away.

MerryPrankster 02-10-2005 09:27 AM

I'm in a retro mood....

Walk on By ~ Dionne Warwick

"I just can't get over losing you
And so if I seem broken and blue
Walk on by, walk on by

Foolish pride
Is all that I have left
So let me hide
The tears and the sadness you gave me
When you said goodbye
Walk on by
and walk on by
and walk by (don't stop)"

Yesterday, after I read the "Broken Heart" thread, I had two songs stuck in my head...

Don't Go Breaking My Heart ~ Elton John and KiKi Dee (It took me a few minutes to figure out who sang that)

How Can You Mend a Broken Heart? ~ BeeGees

Morrigoon 02-10-2005 09:35 AM

I've had the Super Mario Brothers theme stuck in my head for some days now. Not the regular version, oh no.... the frickin Boston Pops symphonic version! (Which, incidentally, is awesome)

Chernabog 02-10-2005 10:41 AM

I've had Louis and Ella singing "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" by Irving Berlin stuck in my head for the last three days. Which incidentally coincides with the time I bought their "Best of" album, imagine!

MerryPrankster 02-11-2005 11:29 AM

"This Guy's In Love With You" ~ Herb Alpert

I've been waiting for some guy to sing this song to me ever since I was a little girl. I'm still waiting....so I'll sing it to myself. :)

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 02-11-2005 11:34 AM

"Every time I close my eyes..................."

Rebellion (Lies) by The Arcade Fire.

If this band were to transfigure itself into a man, he would be Victorian, rakish, tender, and naughty. He'd probably have a villains mustache, a red velvet couch, a pet raven he called "Lenore", and I would be sick with love for him, and dying of lust. I'd probably be his maid, and he'd completely ignore me all the time, which would drive me wild and make me strangely happy.

Ghoulish Delight 02-11-2005 11:42 AM

"Atmosphere", Joy Division. That song is so haunting. I need more Joy Division.

mamabot 02-11-2005 11:51 AM

"We Both Reached for the Gun" Chicago soundtrack.

I listend to the soundtrack a few times at work yesterday. Not such a great song to start singing in front of the kids. I had to stop myself multiple times. I just love the melody, not necessarily the lyrics. Except for when Renee Zellweger says "Are you kidding?"

Motorboat Cruiser 02-11-2005 02:40 PM

And I just gave our duplicate Joy Division CD to Fej.......

But, I have them all on vinyl. All except the ones that released 10 years after Ian's death.

I should suggest Interpol. They make me happy in the same way JD did.

Baileykat 02-12-2005 03:54 PM

I've got a Jackson 5 mix playing in my head....

Kat's cheer squad's competition routine is to a mix of Jackson 5 songs...all pre-molestor days....but still something about little kids dancing to Michael Jackson music disturbs me a little!

blueerica 02-12-2005 06:08 PM

I have a lot of Lou Reed floating around in there, however, I am stuck on Iron & Wine's Naked as We Came...

Actually, I think I have the CD player in my mind set to random. Kind of have a lot of songs in my head today. Earlier it was Elliot Smith. I think all this rain has me kind of moody.

De deum De dum, Pink Elephants on Parade.......

flippyshark 02-13-2005 09:27 PM

This is a dangerous thread. Now I have Pink Elephants duking it out with Dancing Hamsters while Lock Stock and Barrel sing laaa la la lalala and Richard Gere manipulates a Renee Zellweger dummy to the tune of Belleville Rendezvous.

Before I opened this thread, however, it was "Every time We Say Goodbye," mostly because that song figured in a play I saw Friday night. (The play is called Sylvia, a comedy about a married couple and their dog. Sarah Jessica Parker played the dog in the original production. I saw a really excellent cast here in Orlando.)

Here's a tune that tends to stay with me - the theme to Casino Royale.

wendybeth 02-13-2005 09:38 PM

Well, thanks to the poster above and Sleepyjeff, I've got the theme song to Gilligan's Island going around my tiny little mind.

blueerica 02-15-2005 01:47 PM

Today, I have randomness coming from a CD mix I made a long time ago. They're all songs about loss, regaining, and figuring things out in general. But also, and should I say mostly, about love. But it's like I have the whole CD in my head.

Most noticeably, I have Pete Yorn's "For Nancy ('Cos it Already Is)"

Don't sell your heart and break just anyone
I want to run with you through moorland fields
Convince yourself that everything is alright
'Cos it already is

That song just makes me want to sing the lyrics as loudly as possible just about everytime I hear it. It's like I hurt for the situation he's in.

And -- Elliot Smith's "Somebody That I Used to Know" -- Not because I"m feeling any particular way, but because it's just another powerful song that makes me think I'm feeling a particular way.

I had tender feelings that you made hard
But it's your heart, not mine, that's scarred
So when i go home, i'll be happy to go
You're just somebody that i used to know

A mark of a good song, to me, is one that can completely erase what I'm feeling now, and replace it with the feeling behind the song.

Prudence 02-15-2005 03:31 PM

If you're referring to the awesome cover version of the song (as opposed to the original from 1959), then you're going to dig the next MousePod.

Bowl of Oranges, by Bright Eyes

Quote:

That is why I'm singing "Baby don't worry", cause now I got your back.
And every time you feel like crying, I'm gonna try and make you laugh.
And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad, then we will wait for it to pass
and I will keep you company through those days so long and black.

And we'll keep working on the problem we know we'll never solve
Of Love's uneven remainders, our lives are fractions of a whole.
But if the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall.
Then I think we would see the beauty. Then we would stand staring in awe
at our still lives posed
like a bowl of oranges,
like a story told
by the fault lines and the soil.

Believe it or not, the song was released on CD on both a Rotters Comp a few years ago as well as a punk comp called "Cupid's Revenge". Buy it on Amazon for $2. The kids today will never appreciate the classics from our era.

My recent purchase of Hôtel Costes Sept has quite wonderfully forced Trinity FM's version of "Sounds of Silence" into my brain. And WOW... I'm totally taken with this new version... It's the same song, but different, and new, and special...

I've been mixing (in my mind) the Simon & Garfunkle version and Trinity FM's since I listened to it.. Not bad..
...........................................
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

What is it with me & remixes these last few months?

I sort of have had the Pirates theme stuck in my head for close to a week now, only not exactly. I was at a youth conference last Thursday where they took the Pirates theme and rewrote it to fit the day.   I hate when they do that. I don't remember all the rewritten lyrics, however, so what goes through my head is more like this:

We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot.
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho!
Yo ho yo ho a Catholic life for me.

It still kinda fits, though. :D

Uncle Salty told me when she was just a baby

More Adventurous by Rilo Kiley

And it's only doubts that we're counting
On fingers broken long ago
I read with every broken heart we should become
More adventurous
And if you banish me from your profits
And if I get banished from the kingdom up above
I'd sacrifice money and heaven all for love
Let me be loved, let me be loved

And if my brain quits, well I guess then that's just it
And if my hands stop working you can call me lazy
And if I get pregnant, I guess I'll just have the baby
Let it be loved, let me be loved

I've been trying to nod my head, but it's like I've got a broken neck
Wanting to say I will as my last testament
For me to be saved and you to be brave
We don't have to walk down that aisle
'Cuz if marriage ain't enough
Well at least we'll be loved

I felt the wind on my cheek coming down from the east
And thought about how we are all as numerous as leaves on trees
And maybe ours is the cause of all mankind
Give love to make more, try to stay alive

I've been trying to nod my head, but it's like I've got a broken neck
Wanting to say I will as my last testament
For you to be saved and me to be brave
We don't have to walk down that aisle
'Cuz if marriage ain't enough
Well at least we'll be loved

Prudence 03-18-2005 11:55 PM

I love glee club nights. Love love love. Half of my brain is singing Tourdion:

Quand je bois du vin claret,
Amis, tout tourne, tourne, tourne, tourne,
Aussi desormais je bois Anjou ou Arbois.
Chantons et buvons,
a ce flacon faisons la guerre,
chantons et buvons,
mes amis, buvons donc.

The alto/tenor/bass lines have slightly different words, and include something about eating a large ham. This song rocks. Here's a slow, kind of clunky midi. It's a 16th century rock song.

And then we sang the small world song nearly all the way home. Over and over and over again.

But I think Tourdion is winning.

The song in my head is "Laid" by James

This bed is on fire
With passionate love
The neighbours complain about the noises above
But she only comes when she's on top

My therapist said not to see you no more
She said you're like a disease without any cure
She said I'm so obsessed that I'm becoming a bore, oh no
Ah, you think you're so pretty

Caught your hand inside the till
Slammed your fingers in the door
Fought with kitchen knives and skewers
Dressed me up in women's clothes
Messed around with gender roles
Dye my eyes and call me pretty

Moved out of the house, so you moved next door
I locked you out, you cut a hole in the wall
I found you sleeping next to me, I thought I was alone
You're driving me crazy, when are you coming home

Music Choice Blues has been very fun today. This morning, I found out that there's a blues song called "Big Ovaries, Baby!" by Gaye Adegbalola. It's got some great lyrics, including...

"I got big ovaries, baby....big enough to speak my mind... I'll fight for my rights, cuz, bitch is my middle name!"

Listen to Alberta Hunter's My Handy Man Ain't Handy No More from Amtrack Blues:

("...he churns my butter, and he strokes my fiddle...he threads my needle, creams my wheat, heats my heater, and he chops my meat...and do you know?...sometimes, he's up way before dawn, busy cleaning the rough edges off my lawn...")

The double entendre is delightful!

Kings and Queens by Aerosmith - somehow appropriate with all the talk from Not Afraid about the French Revolution...

Cadaverous Pallor 03-29-2005 08:43 PM

Yeah, they overplayed it, and yeah, it's old already, but every time I hear this song I get it stuck in my head and I'm glad of it. The lyrics are so spot on.

Sometimes I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear.
And I cant help but ask myself how much I'll let the fear take the wheel and steer.
It's driven me before, it seems to have a vague, haunting mass appeal
Lately I'm beginning to find that I should be the one behind the wheel.
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there!
With open arms and open eyes, yeah.
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there.

So if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive?
It's driven me before, it seems to be the way
That everyone else get around
Lately, I'm beginning to find that when I drive myself, my light is found.
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there!
With open arms and open eyes, yeah.
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there, I'll be there.

Would you choose water over wine?
Hold the wheel and drive.

Right now, I have "City of Blinding Lights" by U2, and I honestly thought they'd brought themselves to a point where I could no longer listen to anything new they put out (didn't care for the last two albums, and Vertigo just grates on me) but this song is the same kind of powerful romantic (if not a bit cliche at moments) rock that I love from U2.

Quote:

The more you see the less you know
The less you find out as you go
I knew much more then than I do now

Neon heart, day-glow eyes
The city lit by fireflies
They're advertising in the skies
For people like us

And I miss you when you're not around
I'm getting ready to leave the ground

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights
Aside from the refrains, the rest of the song is only OK, but the first minute of it is enough to make me totally love it. Until I hear it a squillion times!

Yep. Derrick Plourde was their original drummer. I think he was on their original LP, then he went on to be in Lagwagon, Bad Astronaut, and a bunch of other band that would probably be known only to people familiar with the Santa Barbara/Goleta music scene.
