Award Season 2006
I figured we should have a thread about the big awards for the films of 2006 - some perdictions etc.
Ok, so we've got the Indie awards last month, now the National Board of Review winners announced today: http://www.showbuzz.cbsnews.com/stor...n2235396.shtml Quote:

I wonder how they define "breakthrough" since I would argue that Ryan Gosling did that years ago with The Believer and in mainstream film with The Notebook.
Oh, and I didn't like Thank You For Smoking so obviously I disagree with best directorial debut if there are other qualified candidates. And there are: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris with Little Miss Sunshine. So far as I know, they only did music videos and TV before that. |
And they picked for best film one that won't open in the big cities for another two weeks (and most places not until next year) so I can't argue with them.
My understanding is that the movie wasn't screened for press last Sunday so that seems like an awfully rash decision. The way you feel about a movie can change a lot in the early days after viewing. Surprised to only see on Dreamgirls on there though based on what I've heard (haven't seen it yet). |
Hello, out-of-the-blue. They only recently upped Iwo Jima to a December release date. I hope it was better than Flags of Our Fathers. I guess it might be another Clint v. Marty year after all... (though, personally, I thought that The Departed was woefully pedestrian. "Oh, look at the mob and the police officers. They go undercover and drink and shoot people until they're comfortably numb. How not at all cliche.")
While I enjoyed Stranger Than Fiction, I thought that Little Miss Sunshine was superior. Bummer. The Illusionist on the ten-best-indie list? I thought it sucked balls compared to The Prestiege. (Though I hear that The Prestiege sucks balls compared to the book.) I haven't talked about it on the movie thread yet, but Volver is quickly becoming one of my very favorite pictures of the year. It's such a crap year for movies, though. Many fewer than I really felt drawn to or excited by. |
...while I wait (im)patiently for "Pan's Labyrinth"

I got to see Pan's Labyrinth earlier this year (Guillermo is a friend of mine) and it's spectacular!!! :snap: :snap:

Sorry! :D I had actually put more, but deleted it before posting so as not to spoil or prejudice the expectant too much. Thanks for the heads-up on the hubby nod -- we hadn't noticed it!
|
Sorry, but I did not like Pan's Labyrinth. It was depressing. And subtitles didn't help. Frankly, it was so slow and boring at parts, that I found myself losing concentration, and then I'd fail to understand what anyone was saying.
The "otherworld" stuff was very cool looking, but the movie was a complete bummer. Ycch. Maybe just not my cup of tea. But nazi badness is just a turnoff for me. And the fantastical stuff wasn't enough to overcome the real-world dreariness and nastiness. |
You all are going to make me experience how slow dial up makes IMDB, aren't you?

Yay for Little Miss Sunshine getting some recognition. Same with Cars. I hope to see more of these in the coming months before the big awards. (Like the Razzies) We need our own film award. The Swankies. |
Saw Volver over the weekend. It is the best foreign language film I've seen this year, but I haven't yet seen any of the other in their top five and the only one I am likely to see soon is Curse of the Golden Flower (which, based on Hero and The House of Flying Daggers I expect to be visually stunning and narratively boring).

The direction and the editing in "United 93" were amazing.
I'm sad I missed "Sunshine"... |
I'm amazed by the amount of overpraise that The Devil Wears Prada is getting. It was a fun movie but nothing more.

Have to disagree on the Annette Bening nomination. She was at her screeching worst in this one. If they felt the movie needed some recognition (and I'd disagree; it was a pleasant distraction at best) there were other better performances to call out.
Splitting the vote on DiCaprio and Eastwood is interesting since everything I hear is that in both cases one of the selections (The Departed for DiCaprio and Letters from Iwo Jima for Eastwood) are far superior to the other. Nomad for original score is a bit of a cop since it won't play in the U.S. until next year but it does mean that two movies nominated this year somehow involve Kazakhstan. That is about as odd as the fact that two of the Foreign Language movies were made in the United States by English speaking directors (not that I have a problem with it; they fit, though I'd prefer the category be best non-English, non US/Brit production). |

For the most part I think United 93 deserves the acclaim it is getting. But it is hard for me to go along with it as a great original screenplay.
In fact of the three original screenplay nominations I've seen, none are what I'd consider great because of the screenplay. United 93 is in how it was filmed, Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen in how they were acted. They weren't hampered by bad screenplays but they weren't elevated either. |
Oh, I think the screenplay for The Queen was essential to its success. Ditto for Little Miss Sunshine. The films were each wonderfully acted, but it's not like they were improvised.
|
Yes, they were fine screenplays, but I don't think they were great screenplays. Odds are that if anybody other than Helen Mirren played that part, the movie would only be half so good.
Same with LMS, though maybe not so much. But then I didn't really like The Queen, so my opinion is flawed anyway. |

Oooh Little Man. Mark Kermode (currently my favorite critic) described the film as "the most retrograde, horrible, nauseating, inward-looking, smug, repulsive, grotesque, ill-advised, badly-judged film", "pure evil" and "possessed by the devil".
His podcast from BBC5 Live is great. |
Was The Da Vinci Code an '06 movie? If so, and as much as I disliked it, I'm surprised it received absolutely zero Oscar nominations. It was a worldwide juggernaut in popularity ... usually deserving of a tech nom or something.
Fortunately, I haven't seen most of those horrors nominated by the razzies ... but., hahahaha, Kate Bosworth for Worst Actress is right on the money! I think M. Night's not getting a fair shake, but that was by far his worst film. |
Yes, The Da Vinci Code was a 2006 movie (premiered at Cannes last year), and I am somewhat surprised to see it completely shut out but it deserves it.
I agree on Shyamalan. I think it was his second best movie (it just worked for me on all levels though I understand why people who don't like it don't like it). But it was hardly one of the horrible movies of the year and Shyamalan didn't embarrass himself. I think this is more a reaction to the publicity surrounding it and not the movie itself. Ron Howard is also screwed. The movie sucked but it wasn't particularly his fault. The source sucked too. |
Hooray! The cast of Little Miss Sunshine won the SAG Award for best cast in a motion picture.
