Youtube to iPod video?
Ha, as usual the party line is not the full story.
You can in fact load youtube video to your iPod. Of course that assumes there is anything on youtube worth the effort. |
Pretty much any flavor of stream can be captured. Since I use a mac, I just have a Firefox plugin that grabs the flv files (for Youtube and Google video). Then I drop it onto iSquint for instant conversion.

Whenever I want to download youtube videos I copy the URL address for sharing the video into my web browser. When the video loads the address in the browser is longer & different than the one I typed in. I cut out the 'p.swf' from the address, replace it with 'get_video', hit enter and the video downloads to my computer. Then to convert the clip from flv to mpg I use a free progam called SUPER.

Hey Moonie: when I click your link, I get a 404 error.
Although I was amused by this: Quote:

That's the Internet for you. Here today 404 Tomorrow. Not to worry, the important part of the message was thoughtfully included by Zap in his post. Just edit the URL as he describes and presto save-o. |

Hmm....
I downloaded a clip off YouTube right now and didn't have any problems. Which clip are you trying to get ? |

Perhaps I'm not doing this right... I go to a Youtube video, say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjA5faZF1A8 (rock on dude!) Now I click on "share video" and I get: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjA5faZF1A8 I paste that into my browser and when it starts to play I still have: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjA5faZF1A8 Tell me oh wise one, where did I go wrong? |
My revised instructions for downloading clips off YouTube:

Cool! Now I can finally make all those Rockin DVD's to send my family this Christmas!

It's little threads like this and the good responses to which that remind me, while I aspire to be, I'm really just a wannabe geek.

I have had luck using this site in the past:
http://vixy.net/ You enter the URL of the online video you wish to save, select the format you wish to save it in (MOV, MP4, avi), and it does the rest. |
http://keepvid.com/
Copy the address of the youtube file, paste it in their little bar there, select youtube from the dropdown menu, hit download. It then gives you a hotlink to the file which you right click and "save as". Definitely change the name of the file because it just calls it "get_video". You can either download their little player, or if you have flash you can watch it that way. |
Slightly related note - our Wii allows us to surf the web via a browser created by Opera, which means we can watch YouTube and other streaming stuff on our TV. The speed is great, the quality is good, and it's wonderfully big!
Oddly, photos take forever to load on the Wii browser, but video is just as fast, if not faster, than the laptop. |
