Snow at DRL? and we ain't talking soap here...

So what's the real story?

Our local news is saying LA is going to get some snow. Of course that's rather like saying MD,NJ,DL,DC, or PA are going to get some snow. "LA" covers a lot of area...

Is there a chance for real snow on the Matterhorn and if so will you SoCal'ers be so freaked out that you won't leave home or if you do venture out will the park actually be open?

BarTopDancer 01-12-2007 04:14 PM

*IF* there is real snow falling from the sky I will squeel with glee and then go find and play in it. I doubt it will stick though and I doubt it will hit OC.

Ghoulish Delight 01-12-2007 04:16 PM

Unlikely. The last I saw, they were talking 1500 ft. Pretty low, but well above Disneyland.

But it's not unheard of. About once every 5-7 years we get a good freeze around here, and this is one of those years. Generally the temperature just drops overnight for a couple hours, freezes whatever's on the ground and that's that.

But once in a great while the conditions are right for snow, though if it does happen it will likely be in the very early morning hours and be so little that it's nothing more than wet dirt and some chunks of ice by the time any guests show up.

Not Afraid 01-12-2007 04:26 PM

There was snow last night in some of the foothill areas and we had some iced windows by the beach. It is supposed to get to a whopping low of 38 tonight in Long Beach - but that's not enough to do more than make me turn on the heater. The big "issue" is that the skies are really clear making it colder than if there was cloud cover. But, for us costal/almost coastal areas, there won't be snow.

Hey, this would be considered almost warm in Chicago.

Ghoulish Delight 01-12-2007 04:30 PM

It hit the teens in the valley last night and likely will tonight again. It definitely wasn't that cold down in inland OC last night, but we had cloud cover (and a bit of drizzle) which kept some of the daytime warmth in.

Prudence 01-12-2007 05:03 PM

Today's high here won't even be above freezing.

DisneyFan25863 01-12-2007 05:21 PM

We had some slushy slush stuff around the neighborhood this morning...which I guess is kinda close to snow.

Kevy Baby 01-12-2007 06:10 PM

I've switched from snow to crack

DreadPirateRoberts 01-12-2007 06:36 PM

We had 2 inches of snow last night, it's 19 degrees right now (local mountains)

Ghoulish Delight 01-12-2007 07:12 PM

Wait. What's DRL? Is that like TRL?

Motorboat Cruiser 01-12-2007 07:13 PM

According to weather.com, we are supposed to be around 36 at midnight and drop as low as 30 before sunrise. Sure feels possible.

Meanwhile, it supposed to be in the 50's in unseasonably warm NY tomorrow.

Thank god I have some spicy Thai potato chips to get me through this.

Babette 01-12-2007 09:05 PM

Snowed in Fontana today. That's not too far from DL. I wonder if the California Speedway survived.

Disney Resort Land?

If it snowed here in LA, people would be running outside with their straws and making lines in the streets.......

:D

RStar 01-14-2007 10:47 AM

Well, here in Garden Grove, just blocks away from DL, we had a hard freeze last night. Got down to about 29*! The sprinklers went off at about 4AM and the water froze solid on everything! The birdbath became a miniture skating rink for the birds! I saw one using a little zambonie, getting ready for the big game!!!

Gn2Dlnd 01-14-2007 10:23 PM

It's 9:20 PM in the San Fernando Valley and there is ice (real frozen sprinkler water type ice, not frost) on the sidewalk in front of my building.

I enjoyed crunching it.

That's why the zambonie wasn't working right last night!

It is currently 38 outside. By 6am it will be 28. I am really glad I have tomorrow off, because at the time I'd be leaving for work it would only be 32. I'm kinda tempted to get in my car then to see what the temperature is then.

Alex 01-15-2007 12:12 AM

Even though it will only last a few days it is nice to feel actual cold weather this last week. Still doesn't feel like an actual winter but it's the closest I've had in about 10 years (to someone who loves the PNW climate a decade of Hawaii and Califonria living is depressing).

wendybeth 01-15-2007 12:57 AM

It's 0 degrees outside, Alex. I'll trade you!

lashbear 01-15-2007 01:27 AM

well, I got Snow in Texas !! So DL is not out of the realms of possibility.... :p

Nephythys 01-15-2007 08:11 AM

we got 2 below zero this morning- expected high? 19

I wanna go HOME! Curl up with Twilight Princess to play, under a blanket with the heater running and a hot cocoa. But NO- got to be here- in a freezing office......chatter chatter!

Cadaverous Pallor 01-15-2007 09:22 AM

The earliest I work is 9am, and at most it's a 15 min commute, so I'm really not out early enough to see if we're getting frost or not.

Ya, this didn't happen. I woke up at 11am. And it's still cold out.

Not Afraid 01-15-2007 12:55 PM

Brrrr. This is why I won't continue to be a pet sitter if we ever move to Chicago.

CoasterMatt 01-15-2007 01:42 PM

I wear shorts all the time at work... but I'm sick people.

Malibu? Burrrr!

Snow on Malibu Beach.

Not Afraid 01-17-2007 06:55 PM

I haven't seen weather like this in So Cal since I was 5. It snowed in Huntington that year.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-17-2007 08:50 PM

I kept hearing about snow elsewhere today, but we didn't even get a drop of rain today where I'm at.

DisneyFan25863 01-17-2007 11:31 PM

It snowed at school today. It was awesome. Everyone was running out and making snow angels.

If you want proof, here is a link to a story we broadcast today on TV. Sorry for ther background audio, people were freaking out about the snow :D

It snowed at Spring View when I was in the 7th grade. Lasted about 5 minutes but it didn't stick.

And every year at Meadow View for the pre-school.

So awesome! I'm totally jealous now. What kind of temperatures were you getting?

We've had lows in the mid to low 30s all week, with highs in the 40s and 50s. We are at about 1700 feet.

Then you haven't been paying attention. It snowed in the San Fernando Valley somewhere around 1988 or '89. And somewhere around '93 or '94 I vividly remember trying to rollerblade across what I thought was a puddle but was a solid patch of ice, still frozen at 11AM. And I remember many many mornings turning on the hose for my dog's water dish and having bars of ice shoot out. The cycle is around 5-7 years that we get a stretch of freezing weather. This is definitely one of the colder ones, but it ain't unprecedented.

Frost is not uncommon, snow at the beach is VERY unusual.

There's a difference between frost and a 1 inch thick sheet of ice on the sidewalk and frozen hoses.

Yes, snow on the beach is unusual...about as unusual as snow in Canoga Park.

DisneyFan25863 01-18-2007 01:58 PM

We had a kid break his leg today at school from slipping on a sheet of ice on the staircase :(

RStar 01-18-2007 06:46 PM

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. I hope he/she will be ok. .

At my school we went outside and built real igloos in social studies.

Yeah. We had snow.

katiesue 01-18-2007 08:13 PM

We had a few broken legs every year at my school because of ice. Whatever brilliant architect designed the school didn't live in cold conditions. The roofs were steep and steel so all the snow/ice/water ran right off, onto the stairs you had to use to get from the main building to any other. There were some spectacular falls though.
