Computer Frustrations! Techinal Help Needed!

I need computer help! A few weeks ago our internet connection went down..I called Comcast, who tried to "reboot" our modem, and nothing is wrong with the modem. They told me either our eithernet cable was out or the network card was out.

Cable is fine, we hooked it up to the laptop and it's working.

Husband replaced the network card last weekend but it still will not connect to the internet. '

Comcast can't tell us what the problem is.

Any ideas?

It's hard to say without being there to look at it. But if the laptop is working on the same connection, check your network settings and make sure the ones ont he desktop match the laptop for starters.

have you rebooted your modem since putting in the new network card in the computer?

does the computer recognize the new network card no problem?

Are you getting physical link lights on the back of the network card and on the modem?

It's usually an issue with the cable company, but they like to place the blame on the end user to save themselves the effort of actually attempting customer service.

not neccsesarily...

without getting into too much detail, it sounds like the ISP has the MAC address of the laptop in their DHCP database, and in order to get the desktop back online, the OP needs to reboot her modem, THEN plug in the desktop and try to get online.

This is yet another reason I highly reccomend getting a Linksys/Dlink/Netgear firewall/router for your home use, costs around $60 but well worth it.

Try this, turn off your computer and unplug you modem from the electrical. Go have a cup of coffee. Come back, plug the modem back in and let it re-establish the connection. Now turn on the computer and see if it is able to obtain an address.

I, of course, am not touching the computer! With my luck something horrid would happen and I'm NOT gonna take the blame for that one!

Hubster will be home tomorrow night and I'll throw all these suggestions at him when he gets here....I'm not sure what all he's tried....I'm just hoping it's something simple!
:rolleyes:

If it's Running XP ->

1. Head into the Control Panel
2. Go to Network and Internet Connections
3. Head to Network Connections
4. From here, run the "Network Setup Wizard".
5. If this the only computer on the network, click "Next" 2x
6. Select the "Other" radio button.
7. Select the Middle Option.
8. Hit Next.
9. Let it do it's thing. :snap:
10. When done, hit finished. (If using SP2, you will be asked to Turn Off File/Print sharing. If only computer on the 'net, then turn it OFF.)

Try it now. What this will do is clear out the network setting, and restore it to it's "Auto Obtain IP", and it's defualt.

Don'f forget Comcast's "FAQs" -> http://faq.comcast.net/faq/query.jsp?name=Connection

I say just pound your head against the wall. It won't help the problem, but will make it less relavent in your life.
