Gosh, I feel sorry for the groom.

I wish I had a video of my sister when she came back from the hairdresser's on her wedding day. Luckily 3 of her (9!) bridesmaids were hairdressers and were able to fix it.

That's nothing. We used to go to a place called "Action Park" in NJ where bloodied passengers were removed from the alpine sleds every time we visited.

from Wikipedia:
Quote:

Action Park's alpine slide descended the mountain roughly below one of the ski area's chairlifts, resulting in much verbal harassment and sometimes spitting from passengers going up for their turn, who would often be entertained by the accidents they witnessed while at the same time hoping to avoid similar fates.
The tracks themselves were made of concrete and fiberglass, which led to numerous serious abrasions on riders who took even mild spills. The tendency of some to ride in bathing suits so they could go on to Waterworld attractions afterwards exacerbated this problem.
The sleds themselves were a large factor in the injuries. A stick that was supposed to control speed led, in practice, to just two options on the infrequently maintained vehicles: extremely slow, and a speed described by one former employee as "death awaits."
This slide led to the first fatality at the park, a head injury suffered by an employee (it would later be referred to as the "Death Express"). Hay bales at the curves were meant to cushion the impact of those whose sleds jumped the track (a frequent occurrence), but did not always do so effectively. According to state records, in the years 1984 and 1985 the alpine slide produced 14 fractures and 26 head injuries. While park officials regularly asserted its safety, saying that 90-year-old grandmothers could and did ride it, in the early years of the park the slide was responsible for the bulk of the accidents, injuries, lawsuits and state citations for safety violations.

CoasterMatt 07-21-2007 01:30 PM

Trust me, I LEARNED all I need to know about Alpine Slides at Action Park :D

One of my favorite comments from an employee at Action Park, was "There's only one rule here - DON'T DIE!"

I'd also like to add "Alpine Slide" as one of my additions to the LoT commune.

And my personal favorite:

Salame!

Great Job.

OMG OMG OMG.

Okay, first of all, I must correct myself. It's spelled "sala may", not "salame".

Second of all, we met him today. Mr. David Hart.

So, we'd seen him on Tim and Eric Awesome Show and he creeped me the hell out. I mean, here was a guy that either did the BEST impression of a crazy person that goes on public access and talks about alien races ever, or Tim and Eric had actually found a crazy person that goes on public access and talks about alien races.

Several months later we left the Pink Martini show at the Hollywood Bowl, and oh my fvcking God, there he was at the bottom of the hill, sitting next to a trashcan with a ragged dog puppet saying who knows what! And it suddenly clicked that I had SEEN him there, at the Bowl with that puppet, the last time! So I snapped a photo and moved on.

Once home, I immediately did some searching...and found that Mr. David Hart has a myspace page, and that, sure enough, he is a genuine crazy guy that goes on public access shows talking about and alien race, the Korendians, that gave us all of our technology. He's also a Christian youth minister (or at least used to be). Not sure how that reconciles, but anyway...

We ran into him again today! After the fabulous Dali exhibit at LACMA, we took a stroll through the park next to the tar pits and there he was, sitting on a bench, offering portraits for the reasonable price of $3! How could I say no! So he drew...um...me and...um...CP. He also handed us an envelope with a huge list of "words" that he explained were the Korendian names for some of the stars in our galaxy. He was also very pleasant and appreciative of us supporting him by paying for a portrait.

I'll scan the portrait eventually, it has some text about the Korendians, symbols which I can only presume is Korendian writing, and his contact info.

Today was a happy day.

And, in the spirit of keeping this on topic, here's a documentary about the man.

I was watching this and realized I'd seen it before, but something was wrong. Half-way through the intro I remembered - it was featured on Beavis and Butthead and that's where I knew it best. Their chatter is what I was missing. (When the two hot girls come out on that guy's arm, Butthead says "It's great when you can see the bottoms of the thingies.")

Here's the official video of Senkou Shoujo, from one of my favorite singers, Shiina Ringo (and her band, Tokyo Jihen). Neither Ringo nor the rest of the band appears in the video - but the live performance they did on Japanese TV seems to already have been removed from YouTube.

The song doesn't appear on their latest album "Variety," but is rather a bonus track on their new compilation DVD (it also topped the Japanese charts). Also on the DVD is a an audio-only demo version that Ringo sings in English. The English version, "Put Your Camera Down," has great lyrics, which I share with you here:

Quote:

I am content with taking in this moment caught in time
I'll forget about it soon enough but I don't mind
When thoughts belong to yesterday, the saturation fades
I always am where I'm found

Today this moment deserves the ultimate intensity
I see no need to recharge for tomorrow's happenings
Mistakes we made yesterday, they blur what should be clear
Refocus close on where you are

I am shining in this moment, frame your shot
With your senses open wide
Leave that camera at your side
Let me sparkle in this moment here with you
The only moment that we know is ever true

This very time outshines the bygone moments of my life
I don't care if when tomorrow comes I change my mind
My pulse it pounds. My breath is near, the clarity is clear
While life is certain, why won't you...

Let my shining light illuminate your shot
When it goes out it will be lost
We use up everything we've got
Let me sparkle in this moment here with you
The only moment that we know is ever true

Even if we've met the end I shine with you

Much of the "Bullet Time" effect in the Matrix is not done with morphing- it's cameras setup on predesigned arcs with laser guided targeting and computer triggers- then the filmmakers interpolated frames (or dropped frames) as they needed.

Photo morphing made it's big music video debut in 1991 - Michael Jackson's Black or White

Ok, what I meant was "the morphing of photography from various angles together in order to simulate video." Black or White was filmed with a video camera from a stable point of view. Both the Matrix and the Stones video used still cameras placed in different locations in the room, then did use morphing to "interpolate frames" as you call it, enabling them to "freeze time" as they spiraled around their subjects.

Interesting, though it looks like they're relying on the new car design to be the thrill factor, as it's a tame track. I'd like to ride it though. A free swinging basket that swivels all the way around is a cool idea.

CoasterMatt 02-14-2008 09:42 PM

It's meant more as a "starter coaster" - the marketplace for family rides is huge right now.

LSPoorEeyorick 02-15-2008 09:19 AM

So, the Be Kind, Rewind fan movement has begun, and there's currently a short film competition at Filmmaking Frenzy to "swede" films in 5 minutes.

My favorite right now is a sweded Labyrinth. From there you can link into many others, some good - some not so much. I can't tell if the point is to make bad ones, a la Be Kind Rewind, or make them as good as possible. From what I can tell, people have different perspectives on that.

Have I mentioned I think LoT should enter the competition?

LSPoorEeyorick 02-15-2008 09:24 AM

I was just hearing about this. The analysis I heard was that the hurdle they have is not bandwidth, nor is it, obviously, storage (which is essentially free these days). It's the processing cycles necessary to encode the videos. With the volume of video they receive, it's a massive task and it's questionable whether they, or anyone, have the resources to handle it.

I've long said that the video of the guy shooting the lawyer in Van Nuys should be a case study for "realistic" Hollywood films showing how visually undramatic getting shot generally is.

Most people watching that don't realize that the lawyer was actually shot three times in that exchange.

The clip sequence seems to primarily be an answer to the question "Should we allow spectators to roam freely along the road at car races?"

The answer is, of course, "Yes. Apparently while they may get scared they'll come to no real harm."

SzczerbiakManiac 03-26-2008 10:51 AM

Probably the zoo trained him - but that doesn't mean the little touches, the elegant lines, etc didn't come from him.

Cadaverous Pallor 03-29-2008 06:49 PM

Interesting question.....would an elephant derive joy for this? I know they are seriously intelligent, but could it recognize a line drawing as representative of an elephant? Even if not, could it just enjoy making something? Hmm.

Alex 04-01-2008 07:16 PM

Oh Jackie Chan, the hours of joy you have given me.

My single greatest move in martial arts movie history is 1:20 into this video and it is a miss (and part of one of the great fights choreographed for film, though the YouTube picture quality really sucks.

Then 2:20 into this clip video is one of my favorite 2 second sequences ever.

You may recall a movie out last fall called Hitman. It had a sword fight under a train. The whole time watching that I was thinking "how could they possibly have thought that a good idea considering that the definitive sword fight under a train had already been filmed (see particularly 1:30 in; and that might only be the third best fight in the movie).

Of course, it isn't all Jackie all the time. Enjoy a fight over 4 minutes, 6 stories, and a single take.

I would think that any elephant who can draw a flower that beautifully probably recognizes what they're doing.
