Ah, the glamorous life of an astronaut

This is TV movie of the week gold.

Jealous astronaut attempts kidnapping.

Robotics expert and member of the crew that flew the shuttle Discovery in July, Lisa Marie Nowak, attempted to kidnap another woman whom she suspected of being involved with a fellow astronaut (who piloted the Discovery on a different mission). Nowak is married, the other astronaut (William Oefelein) is single.

She even used one of her highly trained astronaut skills to carry the attempt out...

Quote:

Nowak raced from Houston to Orlando wearing diapers in the car so she wouldn't have to stop to go to the bathroom, authorities said. Astronauts wear diapers during launch and re-entry.

I heard about this this morning. odd to say the least.

so much for NASA's psyche screening process, eh?

I saw this too and thought, very weird. NASA is not all it's cracked up to be, I guess.

Ghoulish Delight 02-06-2007 10:54 AM

Ouch, now they're going for attempted murder.

Alex 02-06-2007 10:56 AM

With a bb gun and pepper spray? (I haven't read any of the news on this since last night so maybe the her possessions have grown more sinister since).

Probably the steel Mallot, knife, rubber tubing, and plastic bags...

TV Movie indeed! Odd story.

My favorite bit is the part where she wears diapers so she wouldn't have to stop along the way.

Unless Florida's attempt laws are wildly different from California, the stuff back at the motel would come under the heading of "mere preparation," if that. The attempt charge would have to be based on her physical encounter with the victim. Unless there are details we haven't heard, it doesn't sound like it makes the grade.

From what I've seen, the knife, tubing, etc. were found on her when they arrested her. A few other things (extra pepper spray, more BB ammo) were found "at the motel", but they were in the trunk of her car so presumably with her at the scene.

But even so, without any attempt to USE anything other than the pepper spray, and no reports of threats to use them, simply possessing them, even at the scene, doesn't seem like much grounds for attempted murder.

Hell hath no fury like a diaperd woman scorned.

The details in this story are freaking hillarious. Her carrer in NASA done, the made for TV movie rights open for bidders.

I sure do feel for her kids. How embarrassing for them.

Perhaps she was planning on cutting up some steaks, tenderizing them and storing them for later.

The rubber tubing seems fairly sinister though. :D
