Good Thoughts for Charles

Next Monday morning (3/12) Charles is going in for major surgery on his leg and hip. Apparently Charles had had a broken leg and it was either not set properly or not set at all. As a result, his leg has been grinding away in his hip joint and is now causing him lost of pain. They are going to go in and shave off the top of the bone and let the leg/hip joint re-built itself.

We're doing this while we are gone because he'll need 2 weeks of isolation, followed by 2 weeks of limited movement (and no contact with other cats) followed by 2 more weeks of limited activity. by doing this while we're in London, he'll have about 9 days of isolation at the Vet.

I'm worried, of course. He's FIV positive and he'll be around other animals and may catch something - and when he gets sick, he gets really sick. However, we've been giving him interferon for about a month now lysine even longer and both should help his lack of immunity. And, he will be at the vet, so if anything happens, he can be treated. But, it's still scary. Not risky, jut scary.

So, come next Monday, good thoughts for Charles would be appreciated. He's such a good boy - one of the best cats I've ever met - and I'd love it if he could enjoy his pampered life a bit longer.

Let me be first in line here to add mine (and Tango's) prayers and good kitty vibes for darling Charles. He is a real sweetie and I'm looking forward to seeing him at the end of the month, hopefully feeling hale and hearty and ready for more pampering.

Charles is holding court at the Vet. We dropped him off this morning. They just called, however, and are not going to do the surgery until tomorrw. They want to do some blood tests first. So, tomorrow's the big day.

Stan4dSteph 03-12-2007 09:15 AM

Good thoughts for Charles!

blueerica 03-12-2007 09:33 AM

CHARLES MOJO!!!!

Good luck kitty!!!!

Snowflake 03-12-2007 10:17 AM

Good mojo for Charles (and I'll bring a fresh bag of greenies)

€uroMeinke 03-13-2007 08:51 AM

Well, right before we boarded, the vet called to let us know that Charles blood tests came out great and they went ahead with the surgery, and that Charles was fine, though still a bit drunk from the pain meds. Oh, and while they were at it they removed the BB in his leg as well. I swear I was elated when I heard the news, I had a hard enough time holding back the tears when we dropped him off in the morning - hard to believe I'm so emotionally attached to this guy. I'm so glad to hear all is well. Thanks everyone for the Mojo you sent Charles' way.

Motorboat Cruiser 03-13-2007 09:34 AM

Oh, that is absolutely wonderful news! Thanks for letting us know. :)

Snowflake 03-13-2007 09:44 AM

Awww, I'm so doing the happy dance for Charles! What a guy!

Thanks Euro for letting us in on this important update! Hope you'r ehaving a great flight so far.

Not that he isn't already, but Charles is going to be a real love bug when you get home and he gets home.

Disneyphile 03-13-2007 10:30 AM

Awesome!!! Charles is a great kitty, and he's tough too. :)

He'll be happy to see you when you return. :D

wendybeth 03-13-2007 10:46 AM

That's so cool! Poor kitty boy- he had a BB in his leg as well? :(

I'm so glad you two have Charles; it's hard to imagine what his life must have been like prior to adopting you guys.

Jughead P. Jones 03-13-2007 12:21 PM

I don't know how I missed this thread, but I'm glad Charles is going to be okay.

MickeyLumbo 03-13-2007 06:22 PM

thank goodness Charles found you guys to take such good care of him!

and he wants you to have a great time on your trip!

Not Afraid 03-23-2007 07:45 AM

Charles is home! We picked him up yesterday and he was one happy cat! He was purring and meowing all at the same time. He wasn't even this happy when be first adopte him.

He's completely shaved on his right backside and has more staples than I had in my boob. They staples don't come out until Monday so he's supposed to wear a cone. We took the cone off so he could eat and tried to put it back on him but he got REALLY grumpy and unhappy, so we tried leaving it off. He's been grooming but hasn't touched the staples. He's a good boy! We were also supposed to crate him overnight, but he wanted none of that, so he slept on the bed with the other cats. Do you think he's spoiled?

He's able to walk around but he's a bit wobbily. The doctor says he is probably in pain, but the pain is much less than what he is used to experiencing. So, for now, he can stay out with the rest of the cats unless he gets playful, then he's going to have to go into seclusion in the bedroom. Thankfully, Chris is home today and can keep an eye on him.

Snowflake 03-23-2007 07:48 AM

WHEE! That is simply fabulous news and makes my day! Doing the happy dance for Charles! WOOT! :D :D

libraryvixen 03-23-2007 08:19 AM

Welcome back home Charles!! :)

Yeah Charles has been a bit of drunken superman, wobbling about but ignoring all obstacles - jumping up on things, wandering about the house. His ability to rattle his cage and burst out of the cat carrier were quite impressive. Yeah, he's still in pain, but you can tell he's one happy cat to be home again.

wendybeth 03-23-2007 08:45 AM

:)

blueerica 03-23-2007 08:50 AM

Awww... YAY for Charles! YAY for you two!

Drince88 03-23-2007 05:08 PM

That's really good to hear!

Not Afraid 04-13-2007 08:15 PM

So, a little update on Charles. He's been doing really good and starting to play a bit (and bringing us mousies). He must've played a bit too hard because he started limping pretty badly again. I decided to take him back to "see his friends" (ie: The Vet) yesterday because I could tell he was in pain. They had to sedate him to x-ray his leg, which meant a day in the hospital. There was a possability that he could've ripped his internal stitches and would require surgery to repair the damage, but fortunantely that wasn't the case. I guess he just "tweaked" it a bit.

HOWEVER......he has been sent back to jail (ie: confined to a crate). He hates the travel crate we have, so I went out a bought him an open, metal crate. I thought he'd be more comfortable in it and wouldn't feel so confined. I put him in there this morning (around 9:30) with a cat box, some food and some water and I left for work. I had to return home to pick up Chris' car keys at about noon. In those 2 1/2 hours, he had turned into the INCREDIBLE HULK, spilled all of his food and water, turned over the cat box, moved all his bedding and generally mad a disaster out of his crate.

Guess who got to spend the day out of his crate? Guess who is not going back into the $100 crate? Guess who is limping around the house bringing us mousie after mousie? Guess who is REALLY happy to be free?

Well, I sure hope he doesn't injure his leg again or do worse damage.

€uroMeinke 04-13-2007 08:31 PM

All I can say is thank God Charles doesn't seem to mind being an indoor cat - he's superman even with his gamy leg. He totally trashed the part of the room his crate was in. Perhaps he was a rock star in a former life.

wendybeth 04-13-2007 08:34 PM

I feel for your frustration, just wanting the Boy to be healthy and him not being very cooperative, but your description of his crate brought a smile to my face all the same. He's kind of a rowdy boy, isn't he? At least he's bringing you mousies- how cute!:)

Not Afraid 04-13-2007 08:40 PM

He's so damn cute it it just wrong. And it makes it REALLY hard to do what the Vet is ordering. As I was typing the post above, he brought me another mousie, dropped it at my side, meowed and lept onto my lap.

He's IMPOSSIBLE!

I'm kinda worried he will - though thrashing in the cage probably isn't good for him either.

Here's hoping he mends before he does further damage :)

Yeah. It's almost six to one, half a dozen to another.

innerSpaceman 04-13-2007 09:28 PM

Lisa, don't you have any pet-sitting connections? Sounds like Charles needs constant human supervision if he's going to take so-unkindly to The Bastille.

Won't someone save this cat from hisself?!?

Or just practicing for the next life!

Aw, he's adorable (and I'll bet quite heavy leaping on your lap)

I can't afford myself!

Poor kitty. I feel bad for him though your description of his antics in the crate made me smile.

Heal up, little kitty.
