Meet the Robinsons?
Will it be playing at the El Capitan for the opening weekend (i.e., same weekend as the great and amazing technicolor Lashbear & Stoat meet)?
I'm certainly interested in seeing it, and was checking out the soundtrack at amazon. I thought it was pretty cool they did a cover of There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow, it's touches like that that make me happy. |
The only way I'm seeing this is if I was either really, really, REALLY drunk, or someone dug up my freshly buried corpse and propped me up in front of the screen.

So I guess it's safe to count you out if there is a swanking? |
He's just dropping hints that he wants you to get him really, really, REALLY drunk.

I'm curious but have misgivings. I don't find the character designs too appealing, especially not in the poster art. CG humans tend to have a doll-like quality, and these are sort of awkward to boot. That won't matter too much if the story is engaging. We'll see.
I do very much appreciate the references to old Tomorrowland, and if this picture is a success, maybe that will help bring a little of that old school flair back. (Like a PeopleMover? Please?) |

I just don't dig the wonderful designs of the House of the Future and Space Mountain being made the butt of a joke - like any of these chuckleheads could design anything 1/50th the icon...

I'd go with you :) Idaho's a bit far away though. Maybe we can do the movie at the same time, is that close enough?
|
I'll be seeing it because I LOVE William Joyce. His illustrations are just lovely. Madz wouldn't let me read Dinasour Bob anymore when she was a kid because I liked it too much. He is also behind Rollie Polie Olie which was the only kid cartoon Madz loved that I loved too.
|
No, I'd go-- though I have to be assembling my invites for much of that weekend (here's hopin' I have more than ~2 hours to be at the meet on Sunday...)
|
I'll be seeing it next Monday.
Every morning I ride a shuttle that also serves the Pixar Studio and every morning I have resisted the urge to shout out "does anybody have thoughts on the future of Walt Disney Feature Animation as a separate unit from Pixar?" |

I heard this was another one that Lasseter supposedly helped save and is better than it's advertised to be. All I know is, the trailer doesn't intrigue me at all. The Disneyland references seem to me to be "hey, this will get 'em in the theater!"

Well, for those interested, here is some backgorund info on the 3D part of the movie. It was the first "Disney 3D" movie scripted to be so from the start. I guess Chicken Little was made 3D after it had been scripted or something.
Deeper into Meet The Robinsons 3D And here is the official website that also plays the trailer: Meet The Robinsons Website It does look promissing to me. I'll give it a shot, no matter what Alex says ;) . Just kidding, Alex. I do repect your opinon. It helps me go in with a certain expectation that helps me not be dissapointed. |
Wow, I couldn't get through it. (I haven't heard the R. Kelly epic this is parodying, but is it really this monotonous?) About six minutes in, I had to bail. Oh well, I still love Al.
|
Holy cow, how did I manage to post this reply to the wrong thread?! The above was supposed to be in response to the Weird Al video. sorry gang.
|
That's ok, it may turn out to be precient about Meet the Robinsons.
|
I know my son and I will be going. It's actually looks like one of the better "must see" movies that he has in store for me over the next few months! I am not looking forward to TMNT, I guess I'm not a turtle fan or something.
|
Adult Thermonuclear Samurai Elephants would make a better movie...
|
So would Adolecent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters!!!
TMNT had promise until I saw the full trailer. P.U. |

THIS POST MADE MY DAY. At first, I was like, "Oh, Flippy must have seen a sneak preview!" Then I was like, "Flippy really didn't dig this movie to get up and walk out 6 minutes in!" Then I was all, "R.KELLY?!? I'm like SO there! He gave us hits like I Like The Crotch On You & Feelin' On Yo' Booty! It's about time Disney decided to celebrate the efforts of a pop culture pervert." Then I remembered Captain Eo and I was like, "oh, nevermind". I'm still loving how this post worked it's way in! Thank you FS! :snap: |

I was reading that, wondering the same thing. ;) |
Just read Alex's review on MousePlanet, thanks Alex for a fair and balanced review. A lot to think about to be sure. I'll be strolling to the AMC multiplex to give Disney my dollars, gotta do something Disney this weekend to be sure!
|
Yeah, its one where it didn't really work for me but I understand why others will like it (Chuck Oberleitner and Sue Kruse liked it; it is getting a mid-60s on Rotten Tomatoes).
Oberleitner says it is the best from WDFA since The Lion King. I'd say that's true only if you ignore Lilo & Stitch (much better story) and The Emperor's New Groove (much better comedy). I don't think many would hate it, at worst you'll be left somewhat flat like I was. |
I'll be catching it tonight and I suppose I'll post about it...

I know nothing about this movie.
I just found out it was in 3D. My head hurts just thinking about it. |
It's available in 3D in capable theaters but most screens will be showing it 2D.
|
The OC Register gave it a "B" And said this:

I think that Nickolas and I will be better off buying Happy Feet and staying home tomorrow than braving the crowded theaters.
Kid's movies are seriously lacking this year, so when a kid friendly movie does come out it is a mob scene. I hate seeing a movie with a theater full of noisy kids and their equally noisey parents. |

I actually had a really good time at the movie. Decent story, good visuals, zany antics. Go in a serious mood and expect to be disappointed. Go in to check out a movie, and you'll probably come out pleased, as I did.
(Granted, not my favorite movie of all time, but it was fun.) |

Ok, I saw the movie today. In 3D at TdT.
First off, the 5:40 show was sold out, had to wait till the 8:10. So we went to Buuuur-Bank for an I-Scream Sunday. Then when we got to the theater, the line was up and down the hallway. We stood there for about 45 minutes. Then they let us in, and the sound was real low while they were playing some wierd cartoon. Then the trailers started but it was a split screen of half yellow, half color. We watched 4 trailers, then they stoped it and announced that they needed to re-boot, and hope it worked, otherwise they'd give us passes to another movie. So we sat and waited about 20-30 min, with some guy in the front row wearing a Incredibles jersey with a flashlight (or cell phone) doing hand puppets on the screen. Very intertaining. Then they finally got it working, and we had to watch the same four trailers again. And the sign comes up to put on our 3D glasses. And it goes to the movie network broadcast thingy. Bu this time we think it's over, there going to shut it down. About 5 minutes later, it starts up again. Yay! we get to watch the same four trailers again! But this time, the movie comes on! I loved the movie! Perhaps I didn't go in with too high an expectation, but I was very pleased. And the quote at the end was priceless. And on our way out, Gary the manager still gave us the passes. That was cool of him. Thanks Gary! Our movie ended up going into about 15 minutes into when the next one was going to start, I don't know if it got cancelled, or started late. |
I saw it last night and was pretty "meh" about the whole thing. Just read Alex's review on Mouseplanet and I pretty much agree with him on all points. The first 3/5 of the movie completely bored the crap out of me and then it was partially redeemed when it found some semblance of a plot.
I think it is definitely a step in the right direction for WDFA but that isn't saying much, considering Chicken Little was a complete pile of monkey vomit. I'm also sort of annoyed by all the people talking about how this movie is the start of the third golden age of Disney animation (but I'll get over it). However, while we're on the subject, a) one movie does not an "age" make, and b) I am saddened that everyone's expectations are so low that a mildly entertaining movie from WDFA makes people squeal with tears of glee. That quote at the end was just plain manipulative.... (I think I said "oh lord" when it came on screen). Wow I'm really sour about this whole thing, come to think of it... rofl |
Nickolas told me yesterday that yes, he would like to see it, but it is ok for us to wait for the dvd. I like (not!) how he gave me permission to buy the dvd.
|
We saw it today. I enjoyed it. But good reviews aren't that entertaining, so I'll stop there.
|
Golden age of Disney animation? C'mon! Manipulative? Double c'mon!
I can't believe both sides of this argument - are people really calling this the Golden Age of Disney animation? Because that's really lame. And does anyone actually care if it's "manipulative?" Things only manipulate you when you allow them to. |
My son and I saw it on Friday and between the two of us we figured out the whole movie before it was half way thru it! I was kind of disappointed but the boy loved it. Like I told a friend though, he hasn't disliked any movie for at least three years so he wouldn't make a good critic.
|
Okay, I just saw it, I liked some things, I was indifferent to others, but, I was really confused by something revealed in the ending. Major spoiler to follow:
Spoiler:
Can anyone shed some light? |

Prudence is correct but I also don't remember the correct relation.
|
Ah, that helps! But really...
Spoiler:
It all whipped by so quickly, and it was hard to engage with, let alone remember, the various Robinsons. |
I don't think this movie is some sort of death knell for Disney animation. We know that there have been problems created by previous administrations, as it were. I'm hopeful that the tinkering done here before release of this movie made a few improvements, and that further improvements will be seen in later releases.
I think that there should be low expectations for this movie, based on the circumstances under which it was created. I think it's a good sign that in the short time that has elapsed since Lasseter came on board there was a quality increase between Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons. No, it wasn't a Little Mermaid-like animation re-awakening. But I enjoyed myself. It didn't rely on poop jokes for laughs, there were some good funny-for-adults moments, I liked seeing the "vintage" 3D short in the beginning (there's something I wish they'd continue with future new releases), and there were several really spiffy animation moments. It wasn't excellent, but it wasn't icky or mediocre, either. Given the circumstances, and they are the circumstances we have, not the circumstances we'd like to have, it was good. What I'll be more interested in is the next movie. Does it meet the standards the resident curmudgeons associate with the Disney name? Or is it merely okay? |
I have to agree, I was pleased with the lack of fart jokes and would-be hip movie quotes. (The Tom Selleck thing was kind of curious, though. That'll date quick.)
On the other hand, there were dick jokes in the trailer for the surfing penguin movie. ("Are you still polishing your trophy?" and a chicken who says "I can feel it in my nuggets." Yeesh.) I'm not a prude, but hearing a theater full of kids laugh at those quips was a little depressing. Guess I'm turning into a cranky old guy. But how low is the bar going to go? Should we just thread up Fritz the Cat for these kids and call it a day? Oh, and somebody 86 the penguin movies already! *sigh* end of pathetic rant |
Just out of curiosity, since Lani missed it until I noticed it and whispered to her.
Spoiler:
To the extent it will date, I have to assume it is already there. Selleck isn't exactly an icon among our younger generations. The Frank Sinatra and the mob jokes are also pre-aged. |
I skipped the credits, so, nope, I didn't know that. That makes a lot more sense. Wow, that's two strikes on me not paying enough attention to this movie. In truth, I was fighting a nap urge by the second half of this matinee showing.
|
I went to see the friday-night midnight showing with a lot of cowworkers and liked the movie a lot considering that sort of thing is not my bag baby.
The 3D was not your run o the mill red/green glasses. A polerizeing effect similiar to what you find in the theamparks in the way of 3D is used so they need to have a special 3D screen settup. It wont be released in 3D everywhwere I suggest you see it somewhere that it is shown in 3D I can see how it would make a big difference in perception of this movie. (Then again I went in with 0 expectations) Oh and I know about 20 people with screen credits not working for the mouse... The DJ team from whateverthefvck radio station that hosted the pre-event blew so bad that perhaps the movie got a bump from not being them though. |
