You'll beWITCHED! You'll beDAZZLED! You'll be swept into a world of enchantment BEYOND ANYTHING BEFORE!

During WWII in England, Charlie, Carrie, and Paul Rawlins are sent to live with Eglantine Price, an apprentice witch. Charlie blackmails Miss Price that if he is to keep her practices a secret, she must give him something, so she takes a bedknob from her late father's bed and places the "famous magic traveling spell" on it, and only Paul can activate it. Their first journey is to a street in London where they meet Emelius Browne, headmaster of Miss Price's witchcraft training correspondence school. Miss Price tells him of a plan to find the magic words for a spell known as Substitutiary Locomotion, which brings inanimate objects to life. This spell will be her work for the war effort. In August of 1940 in the English village of Pepperinge Eye, three cockney orphans are sent to live with Eglantine Price (Angela Lansbury), who is studying to become an apprentice witch. When she receives a letter from the Correspondence College of Witchcraft in London, she and the children fly on a bed (by way of a magic bedknob) to London to meet the headmaster of the defunct school, Emelius Brown (David Tomlinson). At a townhouse where Mr. Brown is staying, Miss Price finds half of a book called THE SPELLS OF ASTOROTH. For the other half, they deal with a shady character known as the Bookman (Sam Jaffe).

Ah, yes! One of Erin's favorites when she was little.

And I'll be "Bobbing Along" for the next week now!

Okay, Morrigoon wins the Bedknobs and Broomsticks geek award.:)

NickO'Time 04-03-2007 02:01 AM

Oh wow! That would be such a treat to see that on the big screen. Those who can go are fortunate.

Cadaverous Pallor 04-03-2007 07:05 AM

I just love Mary Poppins 2, er, I mean, Bednobs and Broomsticks. ;) Fun film indeed.

Snowflake 04-03-2007 07:14 AM

Awww, I saw this with my Dad on first release. Terrific film!

mousepod 04-03-2007 08:33 AM

I wonder which version of the movie they'll be showing - the theatrical version or the "restored" version. Once I saw the longer edit of the movie on laserdisc, I haven't been able to watch the shorter version.

(And I understand that there was even more footage that they couldn't find when they did the restoration...)

cirquelover 04-03-2007 09:41 AM

I love that movie. Now I want to see the laserdisc that mousepod is refering to.

mousepod 04-03-2007 09:48 AM

The DVD also contains the restored version... no need to invest in antiquated technology, cirquelover.

(Unless you want to buy my LD player with 1000+ discs... it'll make my move a lot lighter)

So is the DVD still in print, or is it now in the "collectible" status?

mousepod 04-03-2007 10:00 AM

It's still in print - and for under $20, it's well worth it. You get the long version of the movie plus a few nifty supplements.

Ghoulish Delight 04-03-2007 11:42 AM

My opinion...yet another DVD that aptly demonstrates why editors exist. I've never seen the non-restored version so I don't know which all bits were added back and which were in the original release. But the extended version of Portobello Road felt entirely superfluous and interminably long. And I was unaware going in that there had been any restoring of anything. So I was hardly surprised to learn afterwards that it was a patch-job.

Having never seen the film before that, and not knowing that the song wasn't part of the original, I felt that the movie suffered because of it.
Glad to know the original editors agreed with me.

That said, I am unaware of what else was restored and nothing else stuck out as much out of place as that number, so it may very well be that the bulk of the restoration work was an improvement. But I would have enjoyed the movie a good bit more without the 8 minute interlude of boredom.

Alex 04-03-2007 11:43 AM

Never seen it, and unlike other well known Disney films I've missed, I don't eve know what it is about.

innerSpaceman 04-03-2007 11:59 AM

Um, that song is most certainly in the original.

I've never seen the "restored" version, so I could hardly know that song otherwise.

That said, though it's a charming curiousity ... B&B is not one of my faves, and I won't be going to the Aero unless there's a group outting.

Chernabog 04-03-2007 01:19 PM

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. I'm thinking.... hells yes I wanna go!

katiesue 04-03-2007 01:23 PM

I loved this movie. My grandmother had a bunch of disney read along records. You had the record and then the jacket was also a book. Bednobs and Broomsticks was our favorite one. Well toss up between that and 101 Dalmations. We'd listen to them for hours.

It's 6 minutes longer in the restored version. I liked the first 2 minutes. The next 6......

CrazyLegs 04-04-2007 03:01 AM

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 05-21-2007 03:09 PM

"Damn damn damn DAMN!" - Henry Higgins, My Fair Lady

My dad's bringing me furniture that day, and I have to help him carry a 140-lb. tv into his mother-in-law's place. So unless by some miracle they get through all this at a decent hour and then don't want to go out and do stuff together, I'm not going to be able to make it.

If, however, the animation gods smile on me that day and I find myself available, I will be happy to join in with any group already planning to go. But my participation will be strictly of the last-minute variety.

Kevy Baby 05-21-2007 04:23 PM

No

innerSpaceman 05-21-2007 05:14 PM

I'm actually going to try persuading people to see Vertigo as this season's first (Lot-attended) cemetary screening on Saturday.

Chernabog 05-21-2007 11:13 PM

I cant go :( My friend got tickets for P3 at the El Cap and theres no way I could make it somewhere at 3, grrrr
