FOUND: Drive-In Theatre
I miss those long ago drive-ins where you packed food, friends and blankets into the trunk. I've heard stories that there are drive-ins "some where" but no one really seemed to know. But just by fate and some circumstance, I'll be going to see Grindhouse at Mission Tiki Drive in this Saturday.
You must check out Mission Tiki's site which is Swakolicious. :D |
Very cool! :snap:
|
Lani and I go to the drive-in in Sacramento at least once a year (although it is skanky instead of swanky).
|
Looks really cool. I think I'll have to make a voyage...
|
Drive-ins rock! We have one about forty minutes south of us and we make the trip down as often as we can during the summer months. I have a ball going. Their snack bar looks and feels like something straight out of the late fifties. It's totally like stepping back in time. We've seen both Pirates films there and it was a blast seeing those in that setting.

This is AWESOME! A bit of a haul for the car-less, but worth it. So, so fun! And Grindhouse would be the PERFECT movie to see there.
|
Of all the cool places to check out. They have nicely laid out Website too.:)

A friend once had an idea (though I am not sure if it was an original): a DIVE-in theatre
At the time, he was decidedly single and lived in a very singles apartment complex in Studio City. He knew it would be a wildly popular idea to set up a large projector and screen along with a 5.1 sound system aound the community pool. The idea being that we could watch the movie from the comfort of the pool. Alas, we never pulled it off, but it was a good dream! |
OMG - I finally went to the site and discovered that this in Southern California (Montclair).
|
A dive-in theater might be fun but it wouldn't be very good for watching movies (it would have to be overlit and there'd be too much ambient noise).

City of Industry (Los Angeles County) California
Vineland Drive-in: 626-961-9262 located at 443 North Vineland Avenue (¼ mile west of East Temple Avenue) Classic Drive-in that was expanded to 4 screens, with an overall capacity for over 1500 cars, which still draws fantastic crowds on most weekends, as the Los Angeles area's nearest operating Drive-in. Open year-round, with 4 sets of double features, and audio provided by FM stereo radio broadcast. Admission: $7.00 (ages 12&UP); ages 11&under free. I saw a double feature there last year.. WOLF CREEK & HOSTEL in a ram van full of scream queens... we should do a lot outing to the drive in.. very swanky.. the consession stand is pretty gnarly.. pack some treats .... |
The first movie I remember seeing at the drive-in was "Love Story." I went with my parents on the way back from the beach.
|
I feel a swanking coming on.....

And our plan included a big pro-audio sound system and a very bright professional projector (I had access to the former and my friend had access to the latter). It wouldn't have been THX certified, but it would have been plenty bright and as loud as we needed it to be. |
I've got a Wagon!
|
Three years we've lived here and there's a drive-in right down the street we've never been to. We should really do that. Of course, I'm usually in charge of the food. Last time, it was chicken parmesan.

1977 - Star Wars - Drive in - Awesome!
|
They've had "Dive In" movies at Raging Waters for years- It's especially fun to watch "Jaws" while sitting in an innertube.
This article from Time Magazine in 1989 not only mentions the Dive In movies, but a new attraction at Disneyland called Splash Mountain :) |

The last time I went to the drive-in was horrible! It was at Highway 39 before it closed (and the built a Walmart- just like in the country song!) People coming and going, using their headlights, putting their foot on the brake it the spot in front of us and leaving it for long periods, and I missed the comfortable stadium seating and suround sound. I'm too spoiled to go back to drive-ins! |
Lani and I only go to the drive-in and see movies we wouldn't otherwise see.
The Fast and Furious for example. Also, it needs to be something relatively well lit since there is a lot of light competition. We saw something (I forget what) that was so dark it was like watching the movie with our eyes closed. |
We totally have to make this a swanking sometime. :snap:
|
I like the idea of a Dive In. Who knew that they actually occured?
We must do either a Drive in or Dive in! |

and everyone hangs out in the pool. The snack bar is open, and they are typically family style movies.... it can get quite cozy. ;) From an old press release. "The aquatic center will show two more family-friendly flicks this season, including Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" tonight. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. to give kids and their families a chance to settle in and splash around in the pool before the movie begins at sunset. The La Mesa dive-in, which began with a big-screen television and about 40 guests, has now graduated to a projector screen and audiences that have topped more than 200. Previous films, such as "Harry Potter" and the "Lion King," drew major crowds, Jackman said. .... The lifeguard staff increases to seven members during dive-in nights." |

Mission Tiki Drive In Trip Report
First off a group on Meetup and the So Cal Drive In people were responsible for putting together the tailgate party at Mission Tiki. Everyone was super friendly and fun. One group brought their super barbeque with propane to bbq bratworst & buns. Besides the on going potluck which made the rounds at the tailgate there was the very swank and extremely tiki Mission Drive In refreshment stand. Although the place is small, it's very quaint and kept very nicely clean from what I could see. The refreshment stand had tiki's galore and had a cool hawaiian theme inside. Food wasn't over priced. In fact the "Sweetheart" deal was one large popcorn, 2 hot dogs, 2 large sodas and a large candy for about $14. Pretty reasonable considering I only paid $6 per person to get in. The butter wasn't that cheap stuff but real butter with real grease! Hot dogs weren't spectacular but still fresh.
The So Cal Drive In people also have an on going relationship with the owners of Mission Tiki and were able to have them give us an extra break during the showing of Grindhouse. The movie didn't start until sundown around 8:30 pm so they happily gave our group a special "intermission". A much needed bathroom break that's for sure! All in all I loved the whole experience. Much better than I thought it would be. Giving it 2 :snap: :snap: and a twist. |

Thank you for sharing! I have always wanted to go to a Drive In but there is not one too close to me. There is one closer to Atlanta and I would definitely go there if I had a car...but I cannot see well enough to have a car, let alone drive one.
|
I just found out that the Mission Tiki is but 20 minutes from my house, anyone been yet?
