Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K -- Oct. 27, 2007
Okay, who's up for this? I seriously want to do this! It's only 13K (8.1 miles)!
Nighttime race! Glow in the dark shirts! Post-event party with rides on ToT and RnR! |
Very cool.
See you in October. |

That looks very cool. I need to see if I survive the Disneyland 5K then I can think about something else. If my shin splints don't improve the 5K is mighty long enough.
|
Am I allowed to drive the route?
|
Let's see, 8.1 miles, my recent best effort for one mile was 9 minutes, that would mean I would finish that course......dead.
|
Damn... we'll be flying home that day :(

I don't think it would be worth it to run 13k just to take the shaft... Exhausting as it may be...

My asthma has gotten a lot better as an adult, but I still use my inhaler before I go for a run. That helps me a lot. Sorry to hear yours is such a bother. I have a feeling registration for this will fill up quickly once it opens. I may combine this with a ticket to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and make it a weekend. :) |
Greg, if you can run a decent time for a few miles you could walk the rest and still finish within the limits.
Flying cross country for a 13K is pretty much out of the question (especially with another run two months later). |
Run more than half a mile at a time? Bwahahaha!
I'd bike it. Maybe. ;) |
They charge you $90 to run a marathon, and it's not even for charity?
Nor is it at DLR? No thanks. Besides, I'd drop after the first half mile. |
Quote:
Maybe I can get some local friends to go. And there's always the Bitter East Coaster contingent! :snap: |
Lani was feeling me out last night so maybe I'm wrong.
Spoiler:
|
That's better than turning you out...

I believe I have convinced a coworker to come down with me. :D Now we have to wait for the Southwest sale fares to open up for October...
|
This sounds like a really cool event (even with the running part ;) )
|
Quote:
chances for me collapsing at the starting line are a pretty high % bet. |
Quote:
And the after party is $35, so you could spend $90 total............ .......to run. And if that's your thing (yes, I know it is yours) then that's fine. I'm not knocking it, just not sure I'd spend the money for that kind of event. I had no idea that was usual for such events (or any kind of event for that matter- I'm cheep:rolleyes: ) With staffing, emergancy workers, security, permits and stuff it does cost to operate these. Sorry, didn't mean to come off so  ......... I hope you find someone to go, and you have a good time. Maybe we will get another Run Steph, Run! thread going! :D |
A marathon is about 40k (26 miles). A 13k is about 8 miles.
I'm not a fan of ToT (drop rides offer exactly zero thrill) so lots of rides on that doesn't appeal. But I do like Rockin' Roller Coaster as much as I ever like roller coasters. They better not oversell though because one of the worst things to do after a long run is spend a lot of time standing still. With a good group of people pairing this one one night with Not So Scary could be a pretty fun weekend. |
Quote:
Oh and RStar, your race registration includes the after party. The extra tickets are if you want to go to the party without running. :) |
Registration is now open, and I have signed up! :D
|
I'm thinking about walking it.
|
Looks like I'll be there after all.
|
OK, I'm in. I'd better not regret this.
Now, I'm not math expert, but last I checked, 65 + 4.72 did not equal 69.73. Odd, no? |

To bad it's in Disneyworld or I would go...but being that I'm on the west coast.... :(
|
There's no rule that people cannot travel from one coast to the other.
|
Well except that silly rule my bank has about writing hot checks. ;)
|
Well, if you're gonna be a slave to those kinds of rules, my job as an enabler is nearly impossible. ;)
|
It would take them a few days to catch up with me right? Hmmmmm.
|
And then the Twilight Zone would transport you back in time...giving you plenty of options for how to solve the check issue.
The bank would never know. |
Matterhorn Fans enabling abilities have worked their magic on me, and I am now signed up for this event as well. I've begun an actual walking regimen this week, and so far so good, though I need to get better shoes and and something more appropriate to wear. (You walkers/joggers out there are free to give sugestions. What's comfy and practical for this activity?)

Lash, maybe you should share your chafing remedy. ;)
|
My sister and I are going to walk the 6.5K!
Steph (and anyone else), let us know when you decide which Halloween party you're doing, and we'll try to coordinate that, as well! We're going to arrive the Sunday before and make a full vacation of it - with probably 'a few' trips around World Showcase to build up our reserves for the 4 miles! (Love that Food & Wine Festival!) And when I talked with someone at the company handling the registration, she said there wasn't a limit on attendance, so I think Disney is just hoping it's not too popular - otherwise they had better consider an upper limit! |

That's great Drince! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good Ding! fare soon. :) |

All I'll say is that Nappy Rash cream is a really good thing. That is all. |

Well that's a bummer. They should have had that up initially when they opened registration.
|
Agreed.
|
It should have been announced when registration opened but unless it is being advertised as a run/walk then 15 minutes/mile is generous (though not quite as general as the marathon).
|
The pacing requirement has been changed on the website:

Wow, more generous than the marathon.

Hooray, indeed.
And that sentence I wrote is atrocious. One might think I've been sick AND reading student papers lately. |
So who's going to this? What special preparations, if any, have you taken to prepare to run at night?
Well, for me it is indeed the twilight zone....I am soooooooooooo bummed out! The short story is that I planned my trip to run the 13k and invited a bunch of family. I invited them and further woo'ed them with discounted Disney tickets that you get when you register as a participant. Well, as luck would have it I sprained my ankle and now I'm completely out. I hadn't yet registered so that part is okay...the bummer is that I was really looking forward to the discounted Disney Tickets :( . Apparantly it's a password that you enter at the Disney Sports Complex 13k page. Has anyone gotten their password yet? Would anyone terribly mind sharing the password with me and my bum ankle?:) My family and my wallet will greatly appreciate your kindness. |
You guys are all awesome!! The best for you!
katiesue~ you are doing the race at Disneyland? I have looked at that but don't think I could do it. Walk/run, maybe. I would like to see if I could do it {how far is that exactly?} but not be too put out if I don't make it. |
Flying home from Florida that day....Thank God!
|
I'm registered for this event, but fate has decreed I won't be able to join in. I've been cast in a paid theatrical production, and that will be a Saturday night, during which I will most definitely be on stage. (i'll be Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof, by the way, for six weeks starting Oct. 16th, at Orlando's Starlight Dinner Theater, for those of you who might be in town.) Anyhow, I wonder if my registration is transferable or refundable? I'll check tomorrow.
|
I'll miss seeing you at the race, flippyshark, but that's cool that you got the part. Break a leg! Hopefully we can get together sometime that weekend if your schedule permits. We(my coworker who's running with me and I) are planning to Boma on Sunday night. No reservations yet, so anyone who would like to join, let me know!
I am more of a night owl, so I usually run after work in the evenings anyway. It will be weird running that late though. I'm not expecting to set any speed records. |
Quote:
The course looks fun but the map is so vague we can't exactly figure out parts of it. Map on Page 21 You start in Timon go through Disneyland then through DCA and end up back in Timon. We were a little annoyed since last years course started at Mickey & Friends so we booked the Disneyland Hotel for the weekend thinking we'd be close to the start. Oh well the walk to Timon will be a good warm up. |
That is all sold out, isn't it?
I did a 5K once. :D It was gruelling, I ran the whole way {a lot for me}. What would get me is running past all of those things. I haven't been running much. Only a mile {in two halves} a day. How are you training in this heat???? |
Quote:
Training? hahahaha Maddy and I ran one day last week. I have been doing some pool laps otherwise not much. Swanie's been running on the treadmill but I can't run on them. I feel like I'm falling off. Walking's fine but running not so much. |
Quote:
Thats an exhausting role. You'll make up for missing the race. (I thought you were a west coaster???) Break a leg friend! |
Quote:
Steph, what type of training are you doing for the 13K? How much is enough and not too much? |
Quote:
I recently used a Runner's World training plan for a 15K race I did, and it worked out really well. Here are some articles for short races like 5Ks. Generally you want to build up to be able to run the whole length of the race you're doing, or be able to complete it with a run/walk plan. Are you training for something in particular? We should start a new thread for the DL 5K folks! :) |
Thanks for the links! {I actually may have that magazine...hubby subscribes}
I am not in training for any event in particular. I just want to be able to do it. Confidently. The closest thing I've run recently was what I think to be a 3 mile loop, run walking it. {run 3 minutes, walk 2} completing it in about 35 minutes. I felt good after and really want to do it more. The Disney run sounds perfect. {well, the Disney part:D } |

Frankly, I'm just hoping my DD doesn't smoke me during the race. She's been running races through her running club at school since Kindergarten, but this is her first 5K - and it is on her 10th birthday! She's pretty pumped up for it. My goal is to be able to run the 5K under 40:00 mins - which would be a big deal for me. My training has been going so well that I'm thinking of signing up for my first 10K in October. The Race for the Taste 10K at WDW is the weekend we'll be there. Has anyone run it before? swanie |
I'll be at the 13K (walking very quickly--I'm not a runner).
I need new shoes. |

Less than 6 weeks to go! Wooo!
We're planning to have dinner at Boma on Sunday night (Oct. 28), so if anyone's interested in joining, please let me know. I haven't made a PS yet, so suggestions for a time are also welcome. I'm thinking maybe around 7 PM. |
Alas, I'll still be "Fiddling" on Sunday night - I hope I get to run into you at some point. For anyone who does go, have some Boboti for me! (And don't forget to harass the staff about the lack of genuine zebra domes.)
|
Final race instructions have been posted (link to pdf). FYI, packet pickup was moved to Motions in Pleasure Island.
A group of us are going to meet near the FastPass distribution for ToT at midnight to take a ride. Anyone is welcome. |
So, when I saw the title of this thread I thought "Cool - marathon ride event! Stay on ToT until you drop 13k! What a cool idea!"
Imagine my shock and disappointment when I realized it was a race. I mean, that would take actual effort. Maybe I'll go ride Tower 13 times instead. |

It's over! Finished! Didn't get picked up for going too slowly. :)
I hope Steph will be by when she gets home to say more. |
Congratulations MF!
|
Thank you!
|
Congratulations MF!
|
VERY COOL, MF!!!!
|
Yes! Congratulations again to Matterhorn Fan and HTHBellCaptain!
I'm sorry we didn't get to spend more time together, but it was great seeing you before the race and after as well. My trip was really fun, although the race itself was a bit disappointing. There was a huge traffic nightmare getting into the race, which was probably intensified by miscommunication from race organizers about transportation to and from the race. Apparently sometime between Thursday and Saturday night, someone came to their senses and decided to provide bus transport after the race, but we had already committed to renting a car and driving there. The weather was gross, with super-high humidity, making the going a bit tough at times. I was hoping there would be more entertainment out along the route. Early on there were some people dressed in white shirts and pants who were supposed to be escaped mental patients I think. There were a couple of spots where music was being played, but mostly it was a lot of quiet, dark spaces. There was very little talking going on where I was, probably because it was so hot and humid. Usually there's some chatter among the runners. I ended up with a good race time though, and the medal is very cool. Our post-race ToT ride was fun and we got a good ride photo. I'll have to share that as soon as I get a copy. |
Congrats Steph!
|
Awesome, congrats to both of you! Sorry about the logistic nightmares, Steph, that kind of thing drives me nuts.
|
Yeah, the humidity sucked. I was really hoping that would be one of the advantages of a night race: for once the temperature wouldn't be increasing as the race went along. Instead it just started out set at "teh suck" and stayed there.
It was really obvious how much difference the trees make in humidity so if they do it again I recommend that they clear cut the route as the wide open spaces were pleasant. That said, all in all there wasn't much to recommend about this event. Most of the logistical and management problems can be fixed but it will remain a fact that the the course isn't interesting and it is way overpriced for what they can deliver. On top of that they'll probably try to grow the event which will be bad since the early course can't really handle more people without doing significant start management which is unlikely. I am glad that they didn't cheap out on the medals. I was expecting they would since they cheaped out on everything else. |
I'm sorry the even wasn't what it could have been, but congratulations to all of the Lot participants - MF, HTH, Alex, & Steph. I admire your ability to run and or walk through soup.
|
Congrats to all! I applaud your efforts (particularly since I know I can't match that at this point, not even close to 1k)
:snap: and now that you've done the hard part, reward yourselves with :babette: |

You have a candy corn on your head!

Will wonders never cease. They got one of me that looks like I may actually be running.
