Hi diddly-dee a brand new Mac for me?

Okay, I may be earning a Mac under the table. An inventor/entrepeneur has ties with Apple and if I get the work from him, rather than pay me in $$ (and up my tax bracket) I would earn a new Mac.

You all know I podcast and you also know I've never had a mac and have only worked in windows.

So, if this happens (I'll know in a few weeks time, maybe sooner) what should I ask for?

I like this tune ;)

I have a 20" iMac G5 that I absolutely adore. I steered away from the dual core Macs when I got it since they were brand new and I didn't want to deal with any bugginess in a new format. I shouldn't say anything, but I haven't had a lick of trouble with it. I also have an iBook and an old indigo iMac around here.

Cool, though don't you still have to report the value of the computer as income (technically, that is)?

I suppose I do, I will need to investigate.

Of course, I won't count a mac until it's hatched.

But, I'm hoping that this does work out, the work will be interesting and I am sorely in need of a new electronic toy.

I think the definition of "under the table" implies that it stays between us, or at least out of the eyes of Johnny Law.

But technically, I would think so. Having worked under the table a time or two - well, thems times never got reported. I got paid with checks, even, so I'd assume being paid under the table with payment via a gift would hardly find detection. Anyone know any better than I?

And shhh....

Snowflake -

Basically, the apples come in two flavors and two levels each.

If you want a laptop, your only two choices are the macbook and macbook pro. The pro is probably too much computer for what you need it to do. I'm still happy with my old iBook G4 - so I'd get the macbook with as much RAM as you can afford to put in it.

Similarly, the desktop computers come in the iMac and pro (tower) versions. Again, I'd go for the iMac - you don't need to shop for a separate monitor, and the processors are plenty powerful to handle what you need to do.

To sum up, I'd go for the most loaded of the non-pro apple - either laptop or desktop.

(Can you get one for me, too?)

Okay, this clarifies the diff between a Mac and MacPro.

Since I'm not paying for it, technically, but with my labor, I will hope for a macbook with loads of ram and a really big hard drive. So could I use my Maxtor external hard drive with it? All my podcasts and stuff are on there.

Yeah, under the table is under the table and the risk of getting caught is low (I know a guy who's been doubling his income off the books for years without issue), just pointing out that not reporting the computer isn't any more kosher than not reporting the money.

Really the only risk is if one of you eventually gets thoroughly audited and there is enough of a paper trail to suss it out. (But then he's not the one with an obligation to report anything.)

I love my MacBookPro, although the learning curve has been interesting. i always seem to fail at the simple things.

Ahem - Mac Mini

True. The Mac Mini is basically a macbook with no screen or keyboard. I toyed with the idea of picking one up and turning it into a media server - though the AppleTV looks like a better bet - once it's been hacked, of course.
