Sept. Swanking - Pink Martini @ The Hollywood Bowl (or some such thing)
Hey kids --
Morrigoon and I were looking over the Hollywood Bowl schedule for the summer and were picking some events to go to, and thought that an evening at the Bowl would be a terribly swanky thing to do. General tickets for everything but the Playboy Jazz Festival go on sale May 6.... Jazz Tickets are already on sale. OK so here are the things that seem swanky (for descriptions check out the calendar section of www.hollywoodbowl.com : 1) Playboy Jazz Festival (Saturday June 16 and Sunday June 17). Our favorite Jello man, Bill Cosby, is MC'ing. This is not part of the normal summer bowl season, but a special event, The lower priced tickets that are left range from 17.50/ticket to 37.50/ticket. 2) Cool Brittania w/ Jamie Cullum (Friday, July 20, Saturday, July 21). James Bond, Noel Coward and Austin Powers. Yeah that sounds Swank all right. 3) Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (Friday August 24/Saturday August 25). 4) Pink Martini (with Fireworks): (Friday, September 14 through Sunday, September 16). There's other stuff I'd like to see too, of course, but the above seems to fit the "theme" nicely ;) |
We're out of the state (or country) for the entire month of June, but I'd LOVE to hit the Pink Martini concert with some swankers...
|
Blech, I took too long in adding a poll, and now it won't let me add a poll. Could a moderator please add a 5-option poll to this thread, one with each option in my original post, and the fifth opetion being "Other"? :)
|
Hmm, I'm not awesome enough to add polls to other people's posts.
/sniff |
Pink Martini is great in an outdoor venue! They've been part of the zoo's concert series the last two summers and are always great fun! Fireworks would be great, too. Of course, we can't do that at the zoo.

You can vote for more than one option. Since I'd assumed the Bowl was already sold-out for the season (but I guess I'm wrong), I set the poll to close in 2 weeks. We can make that window shorter if you like, Chenabog. ETA: Based on ozron's recommendation, the cool name and implied potables we'd make portable, the pyro, and the likely availability of better seats the further out the dates ... I voted for Pink Martini. |
Pink Martini is AWSOME live. We saw them a few years ago at some smallish club. They also have a new album either out of out soon.
|
For us unwashed heathens, what is are the Martini de Pink?
|
They play music as though it was created just for LoT.
|
They are a swanky Portland band that you'd love, Kevy.

(You CAN, however, buy tickets on the hollywood bowl website - BUT until May 6, you can only do this if you buy 5 or more concerts at once, but that's sort of irrelevant to this thread, lol) I could purchase a largeish block of tickets for whatever is decided in the poll once general tickets go on sale. |
Seems that people are leaning toward Pink Martini, but I wanted to make sure everyone had a vote :)
|
Pink Martini sounds like a winner so far!
|
Martinis and fireworks ... how can you go wrong?
oh, and there's music, too? Coolz. :iSm: |
Ok, Pink Martini it is - yes?
Who's getting tickets, when, and for how many? What kind of seats. Disclaimer - - I'm only interested if we get decent seats with backs. No more bench sitting at the Bowl for me. |
I'm so unswanky. I voted for the Jazz Festival because I love jazz. And, after listening to the samples at Pink Martini's site, I'd have to say I don't like them much. :(
So, no martini at the Bowl for me. But, I'm sure you'll all have fun. :) |
Quote:
We had nosebleeds for the Sondheim concert and for Prairie Home Companion, and they definitely had seat backs. I'm totally into going, but I'm not willing to pay for the super-expensive tickets... |
K, well I will go as far back as the benches have backs ... but won't go as far back as no backs.
How's that? |
I would SOOOO love to go to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy!
|
Bump. Single event tickets are on sale now.
|
Even section X (aka "the Cindy seats") have seat backs.
I might be interested in superseats. |
Well, who's arranging this? Right now, I'm too busy to be arranging, so I'm just going to whichever concert the arranger picks. I am perfectly happy with ANY of the choices, and all I want is seats with backs.
I realize full well that "arranging" means paying for. I did it for the camping trip, and put $500 on my credit card that I won't recoup in full until July. So, I'm no longer the designated payer-now, recouper-later. But if someone will do that ... I, for one, will pay promptly. However, it's a known fact that a fair amount of repay will not happen until the actual event that is prepaid by some generous soul. |
OK I can arrange this but I don't know two things :
1) How many seats should I get? 2) Where should I get the seats? I just called Ticketmaster and these are our options: (Be warned that ALL super saver seats are gone for all three performances). We can be on the same LEVEL as the super saver seats (benches with backs) for $35 + 7.50 service charge per ticket on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th (8:30 pm) or SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th. (7:30 pm). We can be one level back from the super saver seats for $22 + 6.50/ticket service charge if we go on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th. (8:30 pm) I might be able to swing by the hollywood bowl itself and pick up the tickets, thus reducing the service fees, but those are our options. So if we are doing this, I'd like to order the tickets by the end of next week. I was thinking of getting, say, 15 tickets? 20 tickets? What do you guys think? Obviously, I don't want to be stuck with any at the end. And if you say you are in, then basically you will owe me the $. If you cannot go at the last minute, then you still need to pay for the ticket (and I'll give you a refund if all of the seats fill up and we find someone else to take the ticket) ;) My vote is for Sunday, September 15th in the better seats. 7:30 concert. |
That's my vote, too.
Get a dozen tickets, would be my best bet. I don't think 15 people responded favorably in this thread. But I bet we can scrounge up a dozen by showday! |

I know you all wont believe this until you see my face

So here's who I have as "in" (for Sunday, September 15, 7:30 pm) - post in this thread or PM me if you are in (and if you are on this list and you want "out", then you have till next Thursday when I get the tickets, lol) 1. Chernabog 2. Morrigoon 3. Snowflake 4. Innerspaceman |

Also, are there any better seats available? I wouldn't mind splurging on something closer. ETA: I checked and those are the best available. And not too bad of a location. |
I'll bring zappppppop with me, if he's up for it.
|
Count Chris and I in.

Heidi and Tom too.

September? I know a couple who'll be living down there by then (we better be) - who would love to go.
Count us in. |
In that case, with apologies to zap (unless he chimes in here and says he reeeeally wants to go) ... I'd rather not drive him back to Newport after the Bowl on a school nite.
So, if he's out, that leaves room for our hopefully-ex-Friscans contingent, to fill the dozen spots. Zapp, sweetie, if this is something you'd like to do ... all you have to do is say so before Cherny buys the tix ... and I'll gladly transport you - and we can have a Baker's dozen. But I volunteered your name without asking because I thought we were trying to fill spaces. Turns out not. |
Ack, are we too late? :(
|
And me. Am I too late?
|
LOL no, you guys are not too late. Here's the current list -- I will get the tickets on Thursday.
1. Chernabog 2. Morrigoon 3. Snowflake 4. Innerspaceman 5. Kevy Baby 6. GusGus 7. Not Afraid 8. Seamonkey 9. LSPoorHeidi 10. LSPoorTom 11. Mousepod 12. Heatherpod 13. Ghoulish Dee-lite 14. Cadaverous Pallor 15. Lindyhop |
Sounds like fun, but I may have a new job on the horizon so things are up in de air for me.
:) |
You guys are going to have so much fun! Wish I could be there.
|
Hmm, I'm going to have to talk to my roomate.
I just saw this thread, put me down. BTW, instead of paying the extra $ for service fees, it's no prob for me to swing by the bowl and get the tix in person. $6.50 x 16 would pay for a heckuva nice bowl picnic - and yes, I'm volunteering. (As long as I can get a helper monkey or two!) |

There is a way to do it where they don't charge anything, but I don't remember what that way is. I know BTD knows, but I do not know if she is reading this thread.

Put zapppop back on the list, please.
PM me your address when you buy the tickets. I'll send you a check for me and zapp directly. (I know PayPal charges me nada when I receive payments, but I don't know if I did anything special to set that up. I wouldn't use them if it cost me so much as a dime.) |
PayPal charges if you select the "cash" option when selecting the type of funds you are sending. If you select goods or goods non auction (such as concert tickets or a camping trip) there is no charge. At least that is how it is with a business account and I seem to recall it being the same way with a standard account.
|
I am getting the tickets Thursday nite.
If you need to add or remove your name from this list... 1. Chernabog 2. Morrigoon 3. Snowflake 4. Innerspaceman 5. Kevy Baby 6. GusGus 7. Not Afraid 8. Seamonkey 9. LSPoorHeidi 10. LSPoorTom 11. Mousepod 12. Heatherpod 13. Ghoulish Dee-lite 14. Cadaverous Pallor 15. Lindyhop 16. Zapppop 17. Parmesan Jim ... then just let me know before Thursday. :) |
And, if you don't recognize your name on the list, learn to speak Chernie. ;)

And delighted to be.
I, however, have updated my phone from Chernajoe to Joeacrossthehall. |
OK 17 tickets have been ordered. I ordered thru the group sales, so there is NO add on service fee PER ticket, but there was just a $12 service fee total for all the tickets.
We are in Section F-2 in two rows (I figure that's better than one long ass row). So we get to play "tops and bottoms", just like in real life. We are Row 16, seats 112-119 and Row 17, seats 112-120 (on the aisle). I put down a deposit on all the tickets, so there is still some maneuvering room in case you decide to back out or add your name to the list or whatnot. However, I *am* paying service charges on the deposit, so if you could please send a check soonish that would be really really nice of you ;) If you don't have my address, please PM me! I'll try and set up the paypal thing on Monday if you prefer to pay that way. Oh yeah, the tickets work out to $35.70/each. Not too shabby for a lovely fireworky martini night! It's gonna be fun! We'll talk about some lovely Hollywood Bowl picnic-y food in a few months when it gets closer, taking into account none of the 17 people listed above get eaten by bears or jackalopes on the camping trip. |
OH also, forgot to say -- I will be MAILED the tickets 6 weeks prior to the event (we're talking August here), so I'll just bring them to the event, and if you're massively late, I'll leave them at will call :D
|
What night are we actually going? I'm trying to plan a swanking with other LA friends that weekend and I don't want to screw up the plans.

I think Sunday the 16th... at least, that's what I marked off for it...?

^ oh, that's rather brilliant. They're open late.
OMG, we'll be so fat by the end of that day! |
Damn - my timing is off
|
Pink Martini play the zoo this weekend. Staff can wear Pink in lieu of regular (green) uniform shirts.
I have no pink....can I bring a martini? Actually, the concerts are on my days off. I would attend the concert, but I have shows myself both nights. |

I just called the Hollywood Bowl, all tickets have been confirmed and are being sent to me this week!!!
I'll just hang onto them since that is easier than mailing them out to everyone. If anyone arrives super late (i.e. after we go into the bowl) I'll just be able to leave them at will call. Of course we will be eating dinner beforehand (and having a day 'o pink) so there shouldn't be any problems! There are places to picnic before the area where they take tickets. If you think I *should* mail the tickets out individually, let me know. |
Yay the tickets came in the mail yesterday:
They were addressed to the "Longe of Tomorrow". :D Not a typo -- the address is hand-written. What the heck is a Longe? |

OK so now we are a couple weeks away from our day o' pink -- perhaps we should make the itinerary, no? Everyone should have my cell phone number in case you get lost, confused, stolen, misdirected by Lisa, walloped, pancaked, or smurfed. PM me if you do not.
As the concert starts at 7:30, we will need to ARRIVE at the Bowl I would say at 5:00 to get a nice eating area outside the bowl grounds. Not that EVERYONE needs to be there at that time, mind you, but at least some of us do as we do want a good eating spot, no? We have two options as far as this is concerned. Eating inside the area where you give your tickets isn't a good option, since then I'll be worried about everyone getting their ticket, so: 1) Park and eat down by the parking (FYI, parking at the bowl is $13/car. You can also go to hollywoodbowl.com to look at other parking options). Here is a map of the bowl, I am talking about where it says "Lot D", which is accessed when you come north on highland (where we'll be coming from). There's a nice house-y looking museum down there, grass and benches. There's a couple of more secluded areas with benches, but we'd need to get there super early to stake out those spots :P. The advantage to this, especially if you park there, is that you don't need to schlep unnecessary stuff up the hill to the Bowl, since anything extra from dinner you can put back into your car :) 2) Other eating option is to park wherever at the Bowl, and eat outside the bowl itself on the grass (where it says "The Plaza" on that map) or one of the bench areas listed by numbers 2, 3, and 4 on that map. These areas are nice because they're closer to the bowl, but it is more of a schelp. My vote is for the less schleppy. :) As far as WHAT food to bring, I think our trips to the cemetary screenings can serve as a model. It is sort of semi-potluck -- bring something for yourself and something you can share around. Try and stay in the theme and make it pink! Pink lemonade, who wants to bring fixins for the pink martinis? Now, onto the Pink day PRIOR to our arrival at the Bowl -- our ideas were to have Pink's (hot dogs) for lunch, go to Pinkberry, and perhaps stroll around the land of the pink triangle (west hollywood). Any other ideas on what to do after lunch and dessert? I'd say that part of the day should start at noon at Pink's, otherwise we'll never be hungry for the dinner!!! Phew!!! That was a lot to type up. Your suggestions, please! :) |
Um, no ... Pink's is for the after-Bowl snack.
Lunch is at Pink Taco, with dessert at Pinkberry next door. Then it's off to Trader Joe's for picnic shopping, and up to the Bowl for Hahahah, more food picnic dinner. (of course, the Pinks can be shuffled around ... but Pink Taco is way more yummy than Pink's, while Pink's is more snackable and quite the L.A. icon of late-night action) As for the location of that picnic dinner ...welll, personally, I prefer more schlep and nicer picnic spots up on the hill ... but it really don't matter much. How many people are we talking for picnic dinner? And how many / who is interested in the longer Pink line-up of Pink Lunch, Pink Dessert (and possibly Pink late-night snack)? One of the advantages for anybodies getting together beforehand for the Full Day of Pink ... is we could potentially stuff all the schlepables in one vehicle, and park that vehicle in expensive Bowl parking ... while everyone else parks in (relatively) cheaper Hollywood parking and strolls up to the Bowl to meet up with the schlepables - which then require much less schleppage. |
I'll follow the lead of the locals and follow iSm, he seems to know where he's going.
Looking forward to this! |

The whole Pink Taco for lunch thing is a-ok, then pinkberry, then a stroll up and down pinktown, then trader joe's (there's one extemely close to pinkberry, so all of that requires only one parking, good idea), then up to the Bowl. As far as expensive/not expensive bowl parking is concerned: Bowl parking is $13 at the "official" lots. Oddly enough, the non-official lots up and down highland charge around $20, and they are actually farther. Other options are to park at Hollywood/Highland and take the shuttle up there ($3/person I think, plus whatever parking charges the complex charges). I'm not sure how much parking is for that, but I hate the shuttle. Hate hate hate hate hate it. It is a frigging pain in the ass to find and take on the way back. I know the Conemonkeys do it all the time tho and think it is swell (when they take the subway in), but I do NOT want to carry all that stuff on a shuttle and have to deal with teenagers screaming where to stand at you when you're trying to find the right one back. To me, it is worth a measly few dollars to not deal with that. I suppose we could just pack everything in one or two cars, but then there's the logistics of having two carloads of people up at bowl parking waiting around for the rest of the group to walk a mile and/or take a shuttle, then find them, THEN start schlepping. Do-able, but massively time consuming. |
Oh and IsM were you thinking it would be better to picnic on that lawn-ish area in the plaza, or stake out an actual picnic table up by the bowl? Just curious what the preference was :)
|
I disagree about the "nicer" picnic areas being up higher. We've done the picnicking down on the parking LoT lawns these last few times because we've found it to be much nicer, still very popular but definitely not as crowded as up higher where you have to fight for real estate. Down in the lot there are a couple lawns to choose from, one of which has an actual house sitting next to it (which is some kind of museum now, I think?), shade trees, much more space, plus the aforementioned added bonus of less schlepping.
Nice thing to do is: picnic on the LoT lawn, then bring snacks or perhaps dessert (since we'll be pretty full) up the hill with you. |
Well, I'm all for picnicing on the bigger lawns down at ground level. I've never done it, so it'll be a nice change ... and probably work better for our larger group.
$13 parking ain't bad. Just that getting out of the Bowl parking lots (whether they be "official" or "gouge-you" is often a hastle). I wasn't thinking of taking the shuttle, but rather just the simple stroll from Hollywood Boulevard. Too many options, and I can't see nailing the parking situation down quite yet. Oh, and just to clarify ... though not a stone-written thing ... the Pinkberry I was referring to was the one that just opened in Century City, mere footsteps from the Pink Taco. It was actually the almost simultaneous opening of these two Pink establishments within sight of one another that prompted the Pink Day in the first place. |
Quote:
On another note, are you sure Pink Taco isn't a sex shop??? What a name! |
Yeah, we had a whole thread (or a long tangent) about the name Pink Taco for a restaurant a while back ... that's why when one opened near me (oh, perhaps that was a bad way of phrasing it), I thought it would be the perfect LoT lunch spot on Pink Day.l

I'm thinking 12:30-ish for Pink Taco lunch. But we'd really have to work backward from the time we have to be at the Bowl for picnic.
What time is the show? Anyone know? |

Or more specifically, 7:30 time.
And I hadn't previously noticed this, but Carol Channing is a "Special Guest" that evening. |
When were y'all planning on going to Pinks?
|
I don't know. We were tentatively planning on afterwards, when the place is hopping and has the L.A. icon atmosphere.
But then it was pointed out to me this shindig in on a SUNDAY, and most likely most everyone will want to go home after the bowl on a school night. (Not me ... though my ride would be pissed if we don't go straight home) |
Old farts! Heh.

Well, I'll go to Pinks afterwards with whoever's up for it.
We only live once. (this time.) |

Concert is at 7:30. We should be in our seats at 7:15. Allow 30 minutes to pack our crap up from dinner and mozy up to the seats, that means, finish dinner around 6:45. Nice leisurely dinner, that puts us at 5:00 arrive at the Bowl. Drive to the Bowl from Trader Joes.. let's say a half hour. That puts us at 4:30. Trader Joes (or Gelsons) run for some evening grub. Let's allow 30 minutes for that. puts us at 4:00. Drive to Trader Joes (or Gelsons) from Pinkberry in Century City. That puts us at 3:30 leave pinkberry. Allow 30 minutes to get to and enjoy pinkberry. That puts us at 3:00. Then, prior to that, we have Pink Taco. That puts us at 1:45-2:00 if we allow an hour or so for lunch. Of course, that means eating almost nonstop from 1:45 to 6:45, but what the hell. Skip breakfast that day. Or we can be even MORE leisurely and meet at 12:30 at Pink Taco. If we sit around the bowl eating, so what. Personally, I will want to go home after the Bowl being a Sunday and all. (If people would prefer Pink's Hotdogs instead of Pink Taco then there's another pinkberry by Pinks also... but I think Pink Taco is the better choice, hot dogs aint my bag, baby). So my vote, after all that, is 12:30 at Pink Taco. Pink Taco is located at the Westfield Century City Mall. 10250 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90067 is the address to the mall. Incidentally, there's some retail store called Thomas Pink's there at that mall, but I have no idea what the heck that is. For all I know it's a women's shoe place. :) Does that sound good? 12:30, Pink Taco, followed by Pinkberry (IsM is the Pinkberry in that mall too?), then Trader Joe's/Gelsons run, then to the Bowl, then picnic, then the show, then optional Pink's Hot Dogs afterwards, then cruise Santa Monica Boulevard for men with long, hard, throbbing pink personalities. Huzzah! We'll all be walking funny in the morning. (Oh, and if you aren't meeting up with us at the start of the Pink day, then make sure you have my cell # so you aren't wandering aimlessly though the streets of hollywood shouting "Lounge Of Tomorrow! Lisa!!! Has anyone seen my Lisa!?!?" or some such thing.) |
Yes, the Pinkberries is footsteps from Pink Taco in the same Mall. I agree with 12:30 lunch ... just so's there might be an hour in the afternoon when we're not stuffing our faces with food.
(We can fill that hour looking for men in the Pink Triangle, and hope for stuffing our faces with something else.) |

Ok, who's up for what Pink?
Pink Day is this coming Sunday ... and I think it's best if we get some idea of who's pinking what? So pleasepink up and state which Pinks you're thinking of pinking. 12:30 - lunch at Pink Taco in Century City - northwest corner of the Century City Shopping Center, 2nd level 1:30ish - dessert at Pinkberry's in Century City - downstairs and to the east of Pink Taco 2:30ish - pink picnic shopping in the Pink Triangle - a Trader Jo's or somesuch in WeHo, somewhere 5:00ish - Pink Picnic near some Parking Lot at the Hollywood Bowl - Morrigoon and Cherny have a new fave picnic spot ... but only they know where it is And finally, Late at Night - Pink's on LaBrea - [size=1]is anyone going to be up for late night hot dogs on a school night???? Should we instead try to squeeze this in during that lull of time between picnic shopping and the picnic? :) What are you Pinking? |
We're going to Pink at the Bowl at 5:00. Cell phones should start ringing about 4:30. We'll bring some foodstuffs.
|
Quote:
If you need my cell phone, PM me before noon tomorrow! |

I plan to start at Pink Taco and pink 'til I can't pink no more. |
The picnic spot can be reached by coming UP Highland Blvd and parking in the Bowl parking lot to your right (which are across Highland from the Bowl, accessed by an underground pedestrian tunnel.)
The parking lot surrounds a yellow barn-like building, housing a museum. There are lots of lovely grassy picnicking areas throughout, including around the DeMille barn. Obviously, the barn offers the best landmark for locating a group in an unfamiliar area. |
I think we're going to be joining the gang around picnic-time, as well. There's a chance I might be up for a late-night Pink's stop - but I think it's past H's bedtime.
|
This map: http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/getting...ng_areamap.cfm
shows it as Lot D. Basically, come up Highland, you make a right at Odin (where the cops are inevitably directing traffic) and then you make a right into the lot. |
Hmm, I think Pink Day sounds like fun ... but of course I understand if folks can't spend the entire day having fun with friends (and constantly eating).
So I'm thinkin' that unless a reasonable group of roughly half the 17 who are Hollywood Bowling are going to go Pinking, mayhaps we should scrap the Pinking. So, are there at least 8 swankers who want to play pink all day?? Right now, I count but four. |
I'm torn. It does sound like a hoot, but I'm exhausted just reading the itinerary. Hmmm
|
Well, my original thought was to participate in the pinking, but to be honest, I'd be just as happy meeting everyone at the picnic and maybe hitting Pink's afterwards :)
|
I don't know what I am doing tonight, right now, much less Sunday

I'm still a definite "I have no fvcking idea"

Well, I am officially out of Pink Day. :(
But I hope to still be able to make it to the Bowl for the concert. Things are hectic and very up in the air. |

Lindy, what do you think? Should we do this, or ixnay the day activities and everyone just meet at the bowl for the picnic and concert (which is PLENTY of fun stuff to do anyway, lol) Everyone (if you can) try and at least bring something pink to eat/drink. |
Yep, Pink Day was my idea ... and I loved it. But it didn't seem to catch on like wildfire ... and I am OVERWHELMED with work to do.
So, all's for the best. I'll almost certainly be at the Bowl by picnic time. |
Darn! I have other plans in LA Sunday so I was hoping to meet up for a few and get some PinkBerry :( Oh well, I have enough else going on this weekend to tickle me pink.
Have fun folks! |
I want to talk to Snowflake first...if I can find her tonight.

Sounds like the Pink Meet is starting to stink....ummm...

Anyway, so being that Pink Day is just too pinkishly exhausting for a Sunday, the plan is still that we are meeting for picnicing by the Hollywood Heritage Museum (the grassy area around it) at 5:00-5:15. That's allowing for a LOT of time to eat, stroll up to the Bowl itself (or even check out the Bowl Museum, which is a different museum on the walk up to the Bowl) before the concert. On this map it is listed as "Lot D". Yay we're good to go. I'd better not forget the tickets ;) |
Will there be time to stash picnic items in vehicles after the picnic but before the trek to the bowl?

Was with y'all in spirit. Had Pinkberry last night :)

See you guys there!

Woowee I had fun!!!! Pink Martini was great, Carol Channing was a freakin wierd old cooter, and I got sno-balled by Not Afraid (which she got all over my face, dirty dirty girl!). A delicious time was had by all.... and Snowflake it was great to finally meet you!!! You shot outta there so quick we didn't say goodbye!
|
Yeah: what happened to Snowflake?
I absolutely loved Carol Channing! She was a hoot. And Pink Martini was freakin' awesome. I did not know what to expect going in as I had never heard anything from them - I went in on blind faith. Once again, my LoT friends did not let me down. |
Well, that was fun! Although, I can hardly stand sitting still to dance music. I'll never understand why the Bowl crowd doesn't dance. I think I'm done with pink food for a while, though. Of course, I sure wish I had some cherry pie right about now. Snowflake, where did you go? Maybe you're bringing pie to LB. ;)

Looks like a buncha fun was had...
We just had a bottle of vanilla vodka and a few cans of coke, to keep us company :) |
In searching LATimes.com for a review of last night's show (didn't find one), I ran across this article from last week. Nothing earth-shattering, but interesting none-the-less.

i love you guys so much!

Has anyone heard from Snowflake?

I just got home about 45 minutes ago. First off, so sorry I was swallowed up by the crowds last night and could not catch up with you all to give you a fond fare-the-well. As I told Not Afraid on the phone this morning, I felt like WC Fields, carving my way through a wall of human flesh, dragging my canoe behind me. By the time I got to my car, I was sure you had all parted company (and my cell phone was off). So, bye for now! I've not read anyone's reports, but last night, for me, was a 100% A#1 blast. This was not due solely to the Divine Carol Channing (Razzzzzzzzzzzzzzzberries), but to the fabulous group of swankers in attendance. It was great to see everyone, even though we did not have huge amounts of time for individual conversation. Now that I have returned, I know the way and with an AP burning a hole in my pocket, I suspect you'll see me sooner rather than later. Certainly before the end of the year. Pink Martini was terrific fun! Thanks to Chernabog and to Morrigoon who arranged it all. iSm gets a special mention, again, for organizing the best looking swanking that never happened. Why is it that now I'm back in SF, I'm craving the legendary Pink's chili dog? I guess I will have to save that for next time! I also got the added treat of seeing mousepod at Disneyland (visual evidence coming soon as soon as I unpack my camera). I took many lousy pics at DL, so most will end up being 86'd. Now, to catch up on LoT to see what else has been going on. Thanks everybody for a great fun weekend! |

It was a great show with wonderful company.:snap: I wish I was able to get together with all of you more often. I'm so sorry we lost track of you at the end of the evening, Snowflake. We didn't get to say a proper goodbye. So you have to come back soon. |
Snowflake, I'm doubly glad we got to chat at least a little bit when you hung back a bit after everyone "rushed off" in their big hurry to get down the hill.
Imagine my surprise then when, long after even you left, zapppop and I ventured from the Bowl ... only to find a mass of humanity still exiting down the slope. So we decided to wait it out on the steps till the crowd finally thinned ... but all the folks who rushed off 20 minutes earlier came stomping by. Hahahahaha! Well, that allowed for several of our patented farewellagains, which is always fun. But Snowflake was the one missing in action ... ironically - likely well ahead of any of us. I'm sorry zapppop and I got to the picnic so late, and missed spending time with all of you. We barely got to picnic, much less surrey. The concert was waaaay better than I expected ... which I attribute mostly to the choice of saluting The Coconut Grove as the evening's theme, and then to the delightful singing and musicianship of Pink Martini. Great horn section. Loved crazy, muttering guitar player. And the chanteuse was absolutely breathtakingly awesome. And even though I was expecting an appearance by Carol Channing, I was blown away by how much fun that was!!! The fireworks were very pretty ... and the new "Indy" pyro effects were fantastico. The program seemed short ... because I wanted more and more. A great swanking!!! |
FWIW, I think I may end up picking up some Henri Salvador music, I really liked his sound.
|
I was thinking about you guys last night, wishing I could be there. I can think of no better way to get one's swank on than with Pink Martini. Glad to hear that my recommending them isn't going to be written off as home town pride.
Oregon Public Broadcasting produced a great DVD of their New Year's Eve show in Portland two years ago. Great show! Anyway, glad you had a great time. I was with you in spirit. ron |
In fact, we finally "get" your "Doshvedania, Mio Bambino" remark :)
And I was highly amused by the fact that ever song was preceeded by: "This is a song about a boy I met in a New York club...." (okay, not *every* song... but still damned funny) |

China sang "Eugene" in concert for years before it showed up on their latest album. There was great joy in mudville. ron |
