April 17 -- Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's!

Tuesday, April 17 is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's! Click here to find a shop near you.

I'm planning to go after work and sample a couple of flavors.

Aw damn, several close to me in SF, if I were being really bad, I could just hit one after the other, then go home and go into sugar shock and coronary thrombosis from the pure and delicious butterfat in their ice cream.......sigh

Ghoulish Delight 04-16-2007 11:56 AM

Good, I'll need it after I finish my taxes.

Alex 04-16-2007 12:00 PM

Well, taxes are never a stressor for me (I'm willing to not get every dime back to just use the basic 1040 so it never takes more than 40 minutes or so and most of that is "which pile of paper did I put the W-2s in several months ago").

Has anybody gone to one of these free cone days before? There's one within some reasonable distance of here but I'm not willing to wait in much of a line for free ice cream (same philosophy as the taxes, my time is much more valuable than the $4 an ice cream cone would have cost).

Oh, it has nothing to do with stress, I just won't be able to afford anything other than a free cone (there's a reason I'm waiting until the last minute to file...)

Morrigoon 04-16-2007 12:27 PM

GD: Seriously? Even with the house write-off? That sucks!

I don't know how she did it, but my accountant managed to get me refunds from the state and the feds. First time I've had someone else do my taxes, but after last year's debacle left me in tears, I decided I'd shell out for a professional this time.

Crap, that reminds me I owe her a check...

It's quite possible that there will be a line. I've been in one, but it moved quickly, especially since there is no delay for people having to pay at the cash register.

You can also have more than one cone, but you will need to go through the line multiple times.

We don't owe a lot, but our witholding's been out of whack for a couple of years, still trying to wrangle that. And we only had 3 months' worth of mortgage payments, so that didn't do a whole lot to offset things this time around.

innerSpaceman 04-16-2007 12:46 PM

Yeah, I'll hit up the B&J ... last time the line moved really fast. Otherwise, my time would indeed be worth more than the price of an ice-cream cone.

The bad thing it, my will power to resist ice-creamy goodness crumbles when someone offers it to me for free. Perhaps I will get lucky and there'll be a long line after all.

Alex 04-16-2007 01:17 PM

I too waited until the last minute to do taxes because I was certain we'd owe money. Of course, the smart thing would be to do them and then hold the forms if I owed, but that's not the way I roll.

Turns out, of course, that we're getting a sizable refund. The late year return to work had the opposite effect from what I expected.

But it's moot. Just remembered that what I was thinking was a B&J is a B&R, so I won't be getting any ice cream either way.

That's generally what happens in that case. Your payroll was likely withholding based on a full year's salary. Since you only had a partial year's worth of income you were likely in a lower tax bracket than you would have been had you worked the full year, so taxes were being withheld at too high of a rate. At least that's what happened the year that I only worked for 6 months.

Snowflake 04-16-2007 01:52 PM

Well, depending on my car and the final cost, I may need more than one cone (and thank goodness they will be free) ;)

Not Afraid 04-16-2007 03:19 PM

OOOH! Paying for car repairs - that's now my excuse for free ice cream. ;)

ozron 04-16-2007 03:22 PM

Is Free Scoop Day a national holiday yet?

Mousey Girl 04-16-2007 03:29 PM

*sigh*
No free icecream in the land of the Unswank. Closest store is in Valencia. I can't justify driving 70-90 miles for a free cone.

Matterhorn Fan 04-16-2007 04:47 PM

Hmmm...the nearest to me is in a mall. I'm not sure it's worth it.

CoasterMatt 04-16-2007 06:17 PM

Nearest one to me is just outside my ticket booth :)

innerSpaceman 04-17-2007 04:17 PM

Yum.

New Flavor - Vanilla Fudge Chunk. :)

Ok, it's glorified Chocolate Chip, but yummy.

And ALL FREE TODAY

(one of the great mysteries of :iSm:'s allergic life is why the chips in chocolate chip ice cream or on chocoate chip cookies are not poison, but bar chocoate is)

Stan4dSteph 04-17-2007 05:56 PM

Today's damage:

Creme Brulee in a cone

Jamaican Me Crazy in a cup

Matterhorn Fan 04-17-2007 06:46 PM

Speaking of Ben & Jerry's, has anyone tried the Americone Dream yet?

I bought some the other day when I was home visiting Wegmans, er... I mean my parents, but I didn't get a chance to try it. My lame supermarche has not had it every time I've looked.

flippyshark 04-17-2007 07:41 PM

I went about 8 miles off my necessary route to get to a Ben & Jerry's today. I enjoyed a scoop of Chunky monkey, but they were out of cones. No matter, it's the ice cream that counts. Was it worth it? Oh heaven's yes!

CoasterMatt 04-17-2007 07:43 PM

I had one at break, one at lunch, and one after work just to make me feel better about the semi-bad day.

€uroMeinke 04-17-2007 10:15 PM

Forgot about the day, so I had Scotch instead

innerSpaceman 04-17-2007 11:36 PM

I suppose one could have had butterscotch. That's an ice cream flavor, isn't it?

Ice cream made from Juniper bushes?

I keep checking the stores around here but nobody's carrying it yet. I saw Willie Nelson's offering but I wasn't in the mood for hash and shredded tax forms.

Snowflake 04-18-2007 08:06 AM

I should have indulged last night, but by the time I got home, too fried to go out and search for B&J. Maybe I'll be tempted at my Safeway as I pass through the freezer section? Prolly so.

At my grocery tonight, much of the Ben & Jerry's is disorganized, and a lot of the price labels have a "D" written on them. In the past that's meant a changing of the guard. AmeriCone Dream should be on its way.

On the other hand, that means something else has to leave...

Goodbye, Vermonty Python, you shall be missed.

SacTown Chronic 04-20-2007 08:08 PM

Score!

I'm eating Americone Dream right now. Soooo many fudge covered waffle cone pieces. Americalicious.

You are a true patriot, my friend. Is it like the sweet taste of liberty?

SacTown Chronic 04-20-2007 08:54 PM

Oh yes, lady liberty never tasted so sweet....the caramel swirl was nearly as moist as George Bush's blood soaked underwear.

Chernabog 04-20-2007 09:22 PM

Ugh I read it as "free come day" and was like..... oh man I need to get laid. :(
