Anyone missing the NHL season?

I don't know of anyone who is.

I enjoy hockey and will turn on the occassional game, though I do not consider myself a fan. I think this league has done themselves a huge disservice by not working it out.

On a funny note, the stupid tax payers of Maricopa County (where Phoenix is) voted several years ago to build a tax financed stadium for the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes franchise. This was to be the first season using the building. I voted against the stadium, by the way.

I used to watch a lot of hockey when I was in michigan, but not so much anymore.. So I guess I'm not missing it too badly.

Fortunatley we have the SD Gulls down here, so I can get my fill of hockey anytime I want. It's just too bad they are barely above college caliber hockey.

I am!!! I *so* miss hockey. ::sigh:: Ornery jerks. They're talking about starting next season with replacement players. It won't be the same without Ziggy and Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuc, but hey, at least it'd be hockey.

NHL... I hear that's some sort of sport or something...

mhrc4 02-18-2005 05:12 PM

I AM!!!!!!

this sucks, i could go on for HOURS about all the problems bettman and the NHLPA commissioner have caused, but the loss of the whole season is irrevocable, they WILL lose alot of fans, and thats the sad part, coming from a sport that didnt have a ton of fans in the first place.... :( :( :(s

sleepyjeff 02-18-2005 08:16 PM

One of the problems is...so many team owners were losing money every year when they were playing...money they are not losing right now ;)

The need to reduce the leaugue down in size to about 18 teams(12 less then they have now), and have at least 15 of those teams play in Northern Cities where the fans are.

Morrigoon 02-18-2005 11:52 PM

I hear 66 and 99 got together and basically TOLD the league it's meeting this weekend. Heheheh.

That's about as close as it comes to an "edict from above".

Motorboat Cruiser 02-19-2005 12:28 AM

Not really a fan of hockey and don't care much but if this is anything like the baseball strike of '94, it will be hard for the sport to recover from. I don't think baseball ever totally recovered from that.

If the NHL does go under; my sincere hope would be that they would rise out of the ashes with just the 6 original teams........

Imagine all of the talent in the league concentrated on just 6 teams....every game would be like an all star game :)

Woo Hoo, I like the way you think, at least my team would still be around(Red Wings) and the cailber of play would be very exciting. :D

I never appreciated hockey until I actually went to a game. To me its not too exciting on TV, but is fun live. Especially when the company I used to work for had King's Season tickets eight rows off ice :snap: Seeing the Ducks play the Kings at Staples was always a blast!

I wonder if the NHL will collapse and a new League will rise from the ashes. Might be one of the best chances for the sport to survive.

Anybody go to Ice Dogs games?

Matterhorn Fan 02-19-2005 05:27 PM

They cancelled hockey? Those bastards! What will all the dentists do now?

sleepyjeff 02-19-2005 06:45 PM

Maybe we can play This instead of Ice Hockey.

Or we could get a broom ball game up!!!

For the uninitiated, broomball is where a group of friends get together to play hockey with a few differences:

Sticks replaced by brooms
Skates replaced by shoes (no cleets, spikes, etc. allowed)
Pads and helmets replaced by no pads or helmets (at least that's the way we did it).
I think the puck was replaced by a ball.

Wholesome family fun I tell ya!

im so down with that, i havent played brrom ball since high school!

Morrigoon 02-20-2005 12:02 PM

Hmm.... If people were willing to stay up to an ungodly hour, we could even get the ice time pretty cheap (pretty cheap is like $150-200/hr). I've watched broomball, but never played, could be fun!

Kevy ya forgot to mention that all players are on the ice at all times, even if there's 50 people playing.

sleepyjeff 02-20-2005 12:10 PM

Just went to a Hockey game here in Portland last night(we beat Seatle 3 - 1); durring the second intermission they had all the local mascots play broom ball. The game was marred however when the Oregon Duck and the Oregon State Beaver decided to fight.........it turned real ugly when the other mascots decided to join in the malee and the whole thing turned into a brawl.......cougers were fighting wolves, sharks were fighting eagles, a good time was had by all :D
