Free Books

The other discussion of "too many books" reminded me that since I started working again last fall I haven't been good about getting the unnecessary books out of the house. So, here are is a list of books that I'll be moving out one way or another.

If you want one (or more) just reply saying what and then PM me with a mailing address and I'll eventually drop in the mail. There is a small chance of Lani vetoing some from being deaccessioned (see, library school teaches you big words). But otherwise, first claimed, first served.

The commute requirement of easy reading has reintroduced an embarrassment of mid-quality science fiction to my recent reading list.

Balfour, Sandy, pretty girl in crimson rose (8): A Memoir of Love, Exile, and Crosswords (hardcover)

Bryson, Bill, The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America (trade paperback)

Bryson, Bill, Notes from a Small Island (trade paperback)

Casti, John L., The Cambridge Quintet: A Work of Scientific Speculation (trade paperback)

Chabon, Michael, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (trade paperback) - Pulitzer Prize winner (and deserving of it)

Cohen, Patricia Cline, A Calculating People: The Spread of Numeracy in Early America (trade paperback)

Cornwell, Patricia, Blow Fly (mass market paperback)

Denby, David, Great Books: My Adventures with Homer, Rousseau, Woolf, and Other Indestructible Writers of the Western World (hardcover)

Ellis, Richard, Aquagenesis: The Origin and Evolution of Life in the Sea (trade paperback)

Fadiman, Anne (editor), The Best American Essays, 2003 (trade paperback)

Ferguson, Craig, Between the Bridge and the River (trade paperback) - Yes, that Craig Ferguson and it is a novel not an autobiography.

Fouts, Roger with Mills, Stephen Tukel, Next of Kin: What Chimpanzees Have Taught Me About Who We Are (trade paperback)

Gaiman, Neil, Neverwhere (trade paperback)

Gibson, William, Pattern Recognition (trade paperback)

Gleeson, Janet, Millionaire: The Philanderer, Gambler, and Duelist Who Invented Modern Finance (trade paperback)

Grisham, John, The Broker (mass market paperback)

Hamilton, Peter F.
Judas Unchained (hardcover)
The Naked God, Part 1: Flight (mass market paperback)
The Naked God, Part 2: Faith (mass market paperback)
The Neutronium Alchemist, Part 1: Consolidation (mass market paperback)
The Neutronium Alchemist, Part 2: Conflict (mass market paperback)
Pandora's Star (mass market paperback)
The Reality Dysfunction, Part 1: Emergence (mass market paperback)
The Reality Dysfunction, Park 2: Expansion (mass market paperback)

Heinlein, Robert A., Tunnel in the Sky (mass market paperback)

Kislevitz, Gail Waesche, First Marathons: Personal Encounters with the 26.2 Mile Monster (trade paperback)

Kpomassie, Tete-Michel, An African in Greenland (trade paperback)

Lederer, Katy, Poker Face: A Girlhood Among Gamblers (hardcover) - Biography of sister to famous poker players Howard Lederer and Annie Duke

Linnman, Paul, The Exploding Whale and Other Remarkable Stories from the Evening News (trade paperback) - Linnman was a longtime local anchorman in Portland, Oregon. This is something of a biography but has all the details of the famous dynamited whale which he covered.

Maupin, Amistead, Tales of the City (trade paperback)

McDevitt, Jack, The Engines of God (mass market paperback)

Millington, Mil, Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About (trade paperback) - This is an actual novel, not just a print collection of rants from the somewhat famous web site.

Nash, Bruce and Zullo, Allan, The Baseball Hall of Shame (trade paperback) - A former Sacramento Public Library book but I swear it was acquired legally.

Parker, Andrew, In the Blink of an Eye: How Vision Kick-Started the Big Bang of Evolution (trade paperback)

Shearer, Harry, It's the Stupidity, Stupid: Why (Some) People Hate Clinton and Why the Rest of Us Have to Watch (hardcover)

Vowell, Sarah, Assassination Vacation (trade paperback)

Will, George, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball (trade paperback)

blueerica 05-03-2007 09:01 PM

Just so it's made clear: I've taken all the best ones.

(I kid! I kid!)

Not Afraid 05-03-2007 09:12 PM

I highly recommend the Bill Bryson and Sarah Vowell.

Tref 05-03-2007 09:23 PM

I didn't notice any Richie Rich comic books on the list, but if you have any, I'll take 'em.

Ghoulish Delight 05-03-2007 10:47 PM

Hmm, are either baseball books worth the read?

And if no one else has claimed it, I'd love to read the Sarah Vowell book.

If still available, I'm interested in:

Greg and Steph, need you to PM me mailing addresses.

Men at Work is about the hidden element of baseball. The work we never see that goes on in support of the talent we assume. It is four chapters, each focusing on a different person.

Tony LaRusa and managing; Orel Hershiser and pitching; Tony Gwynn and hitting; Cal Ripken and fielding. I found the Hershiser and Ripken chapters particularly interesting.

If GD doesn't claim it, I will. He has first shot at it though.

LSPoorEeyorick 05-04-2007 07:52 AM

I'm interested in the Sarah Vowell...

Ghoulish Delight 05-04-2007 08:04 AM

Thanks - sounds like an interesting read.

lindyhop 05-05-2007 11:22 AM

 I'm not looking! I'm not looking!

Actually the books that caught my eye are the ones I already own. So I'm safe for now.

libraryvixen 05-05-2007 11:26 AM

I'd like Poker Face and Great Books please!

blueerica 05-05-2007 06:44 PM

Crap, I just sent Alex the PM a couple of days ago with the books I'd asked without posting which ones I was interested in, and I realize that people have been asking for the books I'd asked for the day of.

I was interested in Aquagenesis and Poker Face.

Also, the Bill Brysons if no one else wanted them, though there appears to be interest.

Alex 05-07-2007 10:22 PM

View them all faster without the forced categorization foisted on you by the Plan 59 site.

This post should be in the Plan 59 thread if someone wants to move it.

€uroMeinke 05-07-2007 11:02 PM

Again - there sure are a lot of car pics

libraryvixen 05-08-2007 07:39 AM

Can you please add
Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose
and
Tales from the City

Alex 05-08-2007 09:32 AM

Yes on the first, the second was claimed elsewhere.

Gemini Cricket 07-08-2008 11:10 AM

I don't know if this is the best thread to place this, but if you want a free audiobook recording of "The Alchemist" by Paul Coelho, iTunes is giving it away for free today.

Tref 07-08-2008 11:28 AM

Books was framed!

Ghoulish Delight 07-08-2008 11:36 AM

Oh, this is the same thread, damn, I had some picked out from the list.

Hey Alex, I don't suppose any of the list are still available. Pattern Recognition sounds interesting

mistyisjafo 07-09-2008 04:40 PM

Wow, I'm going to post mine here too. I've got a ton to get rid of.

Any suggestions on what to to with old books that don't find a home?

Gemini Cricket 07-09-2008 04:48 PM

Donating them to a liberry?

Ghoulish Delight 07-09-2008 04:51 PM

I hear they burn nicely.
