Comic-Con, San Diego

Though I question my placement of this little gem in the Out on the Town forums...

:)

Anyone else thinking/planning on going to Comic-Con this year? I'm giving some heavy consideration, though I won't know entirely how I feel about it until around mid-June-ish.

Just throwing my feelers out there, to see if I can justify yet another weekend doing fun things as opposed to buckling down and doing work, as I should be doing.

CoasterMatt 05-07-2007 10:41 PM

I want to go - just because it's been so damned long since I went to the big event, and I had a bunch of fun at the lil local one a few weeks back.

blueerica 05-07-2007 10:42 PM

Woah, that was a fast response.

I'll put you as a "yes"

Haha... Ok, there's nothing planned yet hehe...

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 05-07-2007 11:05 PM

I will be there as ususal. If you all are planing on staying down there, there are really no hotels left.

blueerica 05-08-2007 06:04 AM

Haha, already?

No, I'm not planning on staying there. I really only go for a day. With the camping trip, and a few other things, I really can't afford (monetarily and school-wise) knocking out both days in a weekend.

thecorndogwalker 05-08-2007 06:09 AM

I am so there... we should plan a LOT meet up place ...

mousepod 05-08-2007 06:24 AM

I know I should really want to go to Comic-Con, but I've never ever been to an NFFC Convention. Is anyone else going to this?

Capt Jack 05-08-2007 08:15 AM

not only yes but 773H yes! went for the first time a couple years back at the urging of a friend. I'm so hooked now I plan days off for it. (not to mention replenishing my wardrobe there :p )

and I dont even read comics

How do I answer this? I've been to NFFC conventions, and I have been to Comic-con..... more than a few times.
Who have I seen there..... Bornieo, Disneyphile and FrodoPotter, hmm.... who's spouse/partner is an artist.. I forget, but I met her last year, Mousewife and family, to the point that Mousewife's darling daughter, and now new husband were drafted onto my staff. :snap:

MousePod, Bornieo and myself are givens. I realize I just spoke for him, but thats the standard. (and the person who's name I cant remember)
I am sure that MW will show since I will be stealing her child again, otherwise its catch as catch can.

BlueErica, you want to come you let me know. if you need to crash in my room, you let me know. Its all good honey, I'll take good care of you. <evil laugh>

KatieSue.... I've never seen you there... I wonder if she attends.

katiesue 05-08-2007 08:46 AM

Never been - hmmmm.

MouseWife 05-08-2007 08:53 AM

Oh yes, Ponine has won over my Chickie and her new Hubby. My older son and his girlfriend heard how much fun it was and want to join the team. {currently he is having time off issues with his job....:mad:}

For almost my childrens' entire lives they've been to the CC. With the Hubsters' job it was convenient.

So was the Harvest Festival but they quit going to that years ago.

A meet would be great, I am hoping to go as well.

Oooo...who will be there, t.v. show/comic book wise???

That would be me. We're not going to have a table in Artist's Alley this year -- we are taking a break from that, maybe permanently. Hubby will be doing a few signings at the Dark Horse booth and that's it! Whoooo! So we're going mostly for fun and will be there Fri-Sun. Staying at the Hilton because we love that outdoor firepit area.

I've been going to this con since...1979? It was a little bit easier to navigate back then.

Hooray!! I knew you'd pipe up.
I belive that Mousewife's hubster was familiar with the convention with it was at the concourse.... Seems that is what I remember him saying.

This is my.... seventeeth con I think.... or eighteenth.... awww who cares.
How exciting that you get to go an have fin this year! And, you wont be stuck back in the corner! You get to get food whenever you want, and its way easier to tell someone, we'll be at Dark Horse than it is ... we're in AA 216.

MW- How glorious!!! I love new recruits!!! Esp ones that just want to work slave labor to get in for free!!!

MouseWife 05-08-2007 11:38 AM

Yes, it was the Hubster who mentioned the CC way back in the beginning.
And yes, there have always been people dressed up. Always. I can't remember all of the themes he said would show up but he said it was always interesting. ;)

Oh yes, the Son and his girlfriend say they are interested in volunteering. I think he was a bit unsure last year but when he heard of all of the fun Jen and Tim had he and his gal want some of that.

Dang, seventeenth or eighteenth??? Wow, :snap: :snap: to you.

keith - SuPeR K! 05-08-2007 12:26 PM

i've never been, but am looking into checking it out this year :)

Disneyphile 05-08-2007 12:34 PM

Ken and I are planning for a day this year, since we've missed it the last two years. :D

1979? I remember meeting him at the 1977 Phil Seuling convention. My dad took me (I was 11). He signed a show program for me. I was thrilled. Ah memories.

blueerica 05-08-2007 06:42 PM

I love how we're all intertwined through our various interests, hobbies and better yet, passions.

I'll keep that in mind, Ponine. I do know how exhaustive the Comic Con can be.

Liz! Hopefully you'll get to have more fun this year, and enjoy some of the other booths and more of the overall vibe of the con.

No kidding. Boss Radio introduced me to hubby's work back in the 70s (back when WE were a couple) and I got a fangirl crush...now here I am. I never would have dreamed I'd be a comic artist wife! Plus get to keep all my friends (including BR) from back then...pretty sweet! :D Yes, Ponine and BE, this year I will ENJOY! [/bjork]

MP -- you met him before I did!

Ponine 07-23-2007 10:23 AM

All right folks....
D-day is upon us.
Did everyone thats coming buy thier passes already? Or register?

Who all is gonna be around?
Well, besides myself, Lizziebeth and Bornieo?

And all of MouseWife's kids?

MouseWife 07-23-2007 10:31 AM

Yes, all of my kids just love the Comic Con. :snap:

This is how much~they've all put in for time off of work {those who do so} and the youngest, who will not miss school for anything, not even Disneyland  has asked to miss school for this.

It is that important to them.

Ponine, I heard a rumor that they are considering taking the Con to Vegas. Does this have any foundation or pure rumor?

oh lord. say it aint so!

Ponine 07-23-2007 10:37 AM

The rumor, or the more true fact is,
the SD convention center doesnt seem to be large enough.

The convention would love to stay in SD, but how?

And if they cannot, then where?

Vegas is in fact larger than SD but far from the only idea/solution.

Was that a non-answer enough? ;)

Kevy Baby 07-23-2007 10:49 AM

What's a Comic Con? Is it a really funny guy who has been released from prison?

MouseWife 07-23-2007 10:57 AM

LOL Right....

Dang, and the Convention Center is HUGE!!!! But you are right, it has felt a bit cramped in there the past few years. Even with them using all available space, too, right?

Can you believe it used to fit in the Community Concourse??? I vacuumed that entire Golden Hall one day...and the lobby. It is big to vacuum but nothing like those halls at the Center.

MouseWife 07-23-2007 11:13 AM

LOL Yes, literally!!!

It was a big job that had to be done and it fell to me. :(

Do I want to be a housekeeper? NO! {do I want to clean my own house? NO!}

blueerica 07-23-2007 12:20 PM

I won't be able to go this year. :(

Making Con-tact

Quote:

Cannes has Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on the Croisette. Sundance has Robert Redford on the slopes. And Comic-Con? It's got Klingons in Renaissance costumes running around downtown San Diego.

From July 26 to 29, tens of thousands of devoted pop culture fans will descend upon Southern California for the largest gathering of sci-fi and fantasy enthusiasts held on this or any planet. It's been called Woodstock for geeks, but these days it's a whole lot more. The annual Comic-Con convention is now one of the most critical industry events on the calendar, as important to Hollywood as any festival in France or Utah.

Thank you for that. And that article is spot on.

Hey MouseWife, read that, then send it to your sweetheart!

Ponine 07-24-2007 11:58 AM

After reading that article I just have to share.
When I started with the Comic-Con I was about 20 years old. a peopn volunteer who worked on a register all day. I moved on, and started wearing a radio...
at that time, and in a way we still do, we used to have parties, and awards that served food and had a low attndance count. A sit down meal.

I ended up in line one time behind Sergio Argones.
I had no idea who he was, or what he did, other than draw; but I knew he was a someone. Everyone came over and talked to him while we were in line, and even at the buffet.

I still never knew what he did, or who he drew for (till that article) and really, it didnt matter.

But do you know, that man has never forgotten to say hello to me? All these years, and weight later, he recognizes, has a smile, and a hello, for someone he kept stalling the buffet line in front of.

Grunt. I knew there was a reason to read this thread. Tell me more about this Comic Con.

On second thought, don't bother: you've already told me as much as I need to know!

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 07-24-2007 01:54 PM

Yes Kevy I will share photo's with you!! ;)

Ponine: I will give you my play-by-play.

Sergio is awesome. I was at the bar at the Eisner Awards and he cut right in front of me making a joke that I was too young to drink. Anyone else Iwould have beat senseless but Sergio is just such a funny person and a fantastic artist.

FYI all - he does Groo the Wanderer and all those tiny gag cartoons in the corners of the pages of MAD.

RE: Comic COn being too big. I think if they cut down on all the "fluff" they could stay in San Diego. There are just too many booths that have little or nothing to do with Comics. All the studio's and Gaming need to have thier own con. I started going almost 15 years ago and it's grown about 5 times what it was. It's a blast but taxing on the mind and body and pushing thru a line up of sweaty fan-boys who don't shower waiting for Boba Fetts autograph can push one to drink. Its a wonder there is such a thing as Bar Con at Comic Con.

That is sadly common in many conventions/trade shows - booths hawking the latest cleaner or home alarms is just plain annoying. However, the also pay. Organizers originally started letting in foreigners to fill empty spaces, but often it further turns into leverage to raise booth prices. Since obviously the convention/etc. SELLS OUT, it must, therefore, be very popular. Kind of a win/win for the promoter and a lose/lose for the guests and true vendors.

Cool article but whaaaat? The El Cortez??? *sigh* Does no one know what the San Diego Community Concourse it? I went to my first concert there, Golden Hall, @ about 8 yrs.. {yeah, the same one I eventually vacuumed I won't mention how many years later}.

Right, Ponine, it was always held at the Concourse prior to the Convention Center??? He described it just as the Hubster did.

{Ya guys notice that I am totally going to avoid discussing those pictures....}

{and, Ponine, I'll either ask you in person or wait to hear from you when you get back!!}

MouseWife 07-24-2007 07:43 PM

Okay, where TF does that fit in to Comic Con??

Last year I remember a dude walking up in drag...I thought 'How do I esplain' this to my son??' I took the chickens way out. He didn't ask, I didn't tell.

Or the big dude in the diaper...the hot chicks, well, that goes without saying.

Right guys?

Not enough hot mf's, though. {when you count how many chicks there are}

MouseWife 07-24-2007 09:12 PM

Too late to edit earlier post:

I talked with the Hubby and he said, yes, the CC did start out at the El Cortez. But, why don't them mention the concourse? :(

Are you referring to the pic CM posted (of the Howard Stern look-alike)? I think he did that to rile me. It looks like the pic was actually taken at City Walk at Universal, but that is just a guess.

And my post was retaliation to CM - you weren't supposed to look at it ;)

MouseWife 07-24-2007 11:27 PM

Yep, post #49. Oh, yeah, I remember Howard Stern did that.
Geesh, didn't that guy worry about hairlines or anything??? tsk...women have it so hard, I tell ya.

LOL Oh, I saw your picture, Kevy Baby. ;)

Ponine 07-30-2007 04:25 PM

1533 posts.... you guys talk too much. :P

so I LOVE this pic..... this is what I saw everyday...

and this.... just because Kevy has to see something that was actually there.

Capt Jack 07-30-2007 04:28 PM

oh I saw her. she spent the whole day painfully close to a 'wardrobe malfunction'

I thought one of the younger nerds was going to pass out when he ran headlong into her coming around a corner. you couldnt have painted his face redder than he got.

MouseWife 07-30-2007 04:39 PM

With all of those people, I was surprised as heck when I said 'We need to find the boy....' and I turn and there he is.

It happened again later, I said 'It is about time we find out what the {older} Boy is going to do...' and I saw him walking towards me.

Freaky.

Capt Jack, did you get a chance to meet my two boys? I know you've met my Jeni and her hubby.

That place was so crowded. Oh man.

Aw darn it, someone told us how long the CC is contracted for. I forgot!

Are you guys at work today, those of you who spent the whole time there?

Ponine 07-30-2007 04:44 PM

Here's the link to our local papers coverage of the convention.
Comic-Con 2007 Coverage

The news articles are down on the left.
Todays article says, and I quote...

Quote:

Last month, when anonymous sources insisted the show was on its way to Denver, Comic-Con's Glanzer denied the rumors. In fact, he noted, the contract between Comic-Con and the San Diego Convention Center had been extended through 2012.

And yes... at least myself and two others from my department are at work today.
We spent our lunch sleeping.

Ponine 07-30-2007 04:53 PM

And might I add.... stolen tidbits from other articles....
volunteer.... why? when you want to know who runs this show, it is volunteers.......

Quote:

In recent years, though, when the IRS has looked at a charity, it has been most concerned about a handful of other issues, including excessive compensation for executives, he said.

That does not appear to be a problem for Comic-Con. It has two full-time executives, each paid less than $70,000 annually, according to the 2004-05 tax return. There are also 13 part-time board officers and directors. Six of the officers receive compensation ranging from $4,320 per year to $18,000.
Add in maybe a dozen paid year round clerical staff, thats it folks.

Funniest thing I read all day... sorry I missed this last week

Capt Jack 07-30-2007 04:53 PM

yeah, Im here. I punked and only attended thurs and friday. I chickened out after experiencing last years 'saturday' attendence, but have since heard it wasnt as bad in the main vendor area as was expected. sort of wish I had indeed gone saturday now.

sadly no MW, I didnt get to meet the youngsters, although chances are good I bumped into them at one time or another.

I..as usual, had a fantastic time. I laughed, I cried (mostly cuz my feet hurt), I drank enough caffine to keep a platoon awake for a week, walked enough to make me an inch shorter from wearing my feet out...and got enough shirts to keep me dressed and fashionable for another year.

cant wait till next year!

Ah, it wasn't?

katiesue~ I think I have to agree with the claustrophobic part, and with the fact that the venue needs to expand.

Capt Jack~that's okay. I am sure you had a lot to look at.

lizziebith 07-30-2007 08:38 PM

It actually felt lighter this year, or maybe just better spread out over the 4.2 days. I went to work but am exhausted. Next year we're going all out and getting a booth. Not having a place to sit made this year harder than we expected!

Capt Jack 07-30-2007 09:37 PM

it was there. I'll see if I can track down a pic of the beastmaster, not that Id have a clue but Im thinking you'll like him. he was all but nekkid and probably 18 if that....and I was never that ripped on my best day

And where was I???

Okay, like so many of my posts, it turns back to Chris Cornell. That is some body there. He has been taking his shirt off for recent concerts and hotdamn. R-i-p-p-e-d.

I'd post some but I didn't favorite them...don't want the Hubby to get all bent outta shape.

But, I wish I'd have seen Edward Burns or Terrance Howard, two of my favs.

Heck, I couldn't even find the frickin' pirate ship.

it was only THE largest, tallest, biggest blackest thing in the room..that, of course, I dont have a single picture of. mostly cuz I couldnt find my camera.

which I of course, stumbled across last night.

/sigh

MouseWife 07-31-2007 09:29 AM

*sigh* I kid you not. We wandered about from end to end but didn't see it. Of course, it was just us two oldsters. Normally the kids see things for us.

I told my son in law the same thing this morning and he responded just like you. But, I got to hear him laugh and scoff at me.

What can I say? Except that I am bummed.

Aw, did you not have your camera at all for the Con?

Ponine 07-31-2007 10:29 AM

Just to make sure that I understand, you missed THIS???

Ummm.... I have no words. It was right behind me. Like go in the door, turn left....
Mind you, I didnt get to go insde till Sunday after 3pm, and didnt realize that there were two different bandanas everyday, and they were ALL gone by the time I went through... but MW......

Yeah, I bet he laughed at you.
And might I also add, I had no camera either.

MouseWife 07-31-2007 10:34 AM

The worse part is that we looked for it.

I don't know what to say. We must have been distracted by something else???

I enjoyed going, I enjoyed being there. I guess though it was all overwhelming.

Well, I agree that she was a little road weary, but you know, I have to admire a woman with the cajones to wear that.

I'll have to post from home... but if you get REALLY bored... just go to Flikr and search for con 2007

otherwise, I'll find you some more later on.

there's a group pic of slave girl leias you should see.
