The RETURN of the Return of the "If I had $300 to buy one item of clothing today..."

Yeah, I'm bringing it back for a 3rd time.

I'm seriously ready to do some shopping, but am short on the funds and on time to do it.

So online and in between work & homework I go!

Round 1

Round 2

My first picks:

$129

$139

I have $32 leftover! ;)

katiesue 05-11-2007 03:03 PM

I want these

$119

and

$198

Kevy Baby 05-11-2007 03:29 PM

E: Love both choices!

Not Afraid 05-11-2007 03:33 PM

I'm going to quickly blow 2/3 of it on this wonderful vintage-inspired frock from Anthropologie:

$208

And, because it still gets a bit chilly at night, i will probably need a fitting sweater for $88.....

Ponine 05-11-2007 03:57 PM

I adore that dress!!!!!
I wish that site had more in the full figured sizes....
Now I have to go find something.... be back.

Okay, I'm back. Not that I have ANYWHERE to wear it, but I adore this
$158 ... enough leftover to get some spanx!

thecorndogwalker 05-11-2007 04:10 PM

I'd buy this Adult Rooster outfit.. which is 160 bucks then i can have 140 left over and I can run around and say "Havent you ever seen a big **** like this?"

Ooooooooooooh.

Not Afraid 05-11-2007 06:25 PM

Ponine as Grace Kelly! It is completely lovely and will look great on you!

Scrooge McSam 05-11-2007 06:42 PM

Ponine, that dress is beautiful.

Treat yourself!

Tref 05-12-2007 12:44 AM

300 smackers? Hmm, I'd buy a black suit -- old school style. And a walking stick. And maybe, because I'm cool, the clerk would throw in some socks. Sweet!

3894 05-12-2007 07:32 AM

Okay, I never, ever pay retail but for you I make an exception.

Re-Mix '30's-inspired sandals $158

leaving me enough for rifling local antique shops for a bakleite braclet like this .

blueerica 05-12-2007 10:32 AM

For today...

$138

$70

Total $208

Saved to spend later: $124
(Only because I begged 3894 to let me borrow the bakelite bracelet above)

You betcha! Wear it in good health.

Today it's a Tocca white blouse for $198. I look nothing like the model but I think it's a wearable numbah.

To go with, these lovelies from Sundance for $88

And I still have enough left over for lunch.

DreadPirateRoberts 05-13-2007 06:54 AM

I'm torn, should I go for darkstone?

or sandstone?

Kevy Baby 05-13-2007 09:18 AM

I say go with the sandstone. It brings out the color in your eyes better.

Also, I've heard sandstone is the new black.

Not Afraid 05-13-2007 11:19 AM

I'm going to take 2 days worth of shoping and make a complete, but daring outfit. I'm going to have to see how I feel about mixing prints in this way. I think it works.....for now.

Wow, can you find a similar bakelite piece for under 150? Not in SF you can't, I'm green, that's fabulous!

I think the mix of prints could work. Last night, only because Real Simple put the idea in my head (I never think of these things on my own), I wore a black skirt that has sort of an embroidered swirly pattern in white with a black top with white pin dots. No one asked me if I got dressed in the dark.:D

They would look WONDERFUL with your cute shoes! However, I have a tip. The Gap has some wide leg trousers in a similar pinstripe. They were a bit too low on the waist for me, but they were cute. I don't see them on their web site, but a store may be worth checking out. They were not exoensive at all.

€uroMeinke 05-13-2007 09:19 PM

I got these in black:

And ordered a pair of these:

blueerica 05-13-2007 09:22 PM

I'm going to say that yeah, you probably could and without too much looking. Cheap Antiques R Us, one of the few advantages to living in the Midwestern sticks.

Today's $300 goes to a cute Radley suitcase (150 English pounds). Their luggage makes me smile and smiles are a rare and needed commodity in airports. Do you think the doggie pulltag makes it just a little too twee?

Somebody here showed me a link to some women's Crocs (I won't out you here) that weren't so ugly - I think they were the "Prima" model. Heather and I saw them IRL this weekend and I wasn't appalled. I even own a pair of the "Athens" Crocs (they're just like standard beach "rubber slippers", only more comfortable). I bought them for walking around on the beach in Hawaii.

... so if you NA bought Crocs, she'd better post here. Let your mainstream flag fly!

ETA: I took too long to post. I'm still not ashamed.

Ponine 05-14-2007 09:54 AM

I own crocs. Mickey crocs.
Great for laundry day, washing the car, and other grubbiness.

Though.... I have worn them to the store, and to work at least once.

Not Afraid 05-14-2007 10:23 AM

I'm going to either deficit spend or hope the exchange rate get better real soon.

Lulu Guinness @ £195.00

The dress is fabulous. But I can't imagine dancing in those shoes. Of course I couldn't even walk in them.

I'll have to check out the pants at the Gap. But by the time I shortened them the wide leg would be all gone.

Kevy Baby 05-14-2007 09:48 PM

I was wondering something as I was driving home this evening (and hearing a report that clothing is expected to surpass computers in terms of online purchases this year).

How comfortable are you with buying clothing online? For me, I generally want to try items on before I buy them (ESPECIALLY shoes!). And many of the items shown in this thread would be definite "try on before you buy" items. I am curious to hear the feedback on this.

Prudence 05-14-2007 09:59 PM

If I can buy online and return to a brick-and-mortar store, I definitely buy online. I much prefer to try things on in the privacy of my own home. Frankly I prefer to shop from the privacy of my own home, too, so as to avoid annoying comments from shop employees.

Not Afraid 05-14-2007 10:18 PM

I prefer shopping on-line because I can do it anytime. With shoes, it is always a crap shoot anyways, so I always require the ability to return. Certain stores have a better selection of sizes on line (:cough:Anthropologie) and I don't get as frustrated. I find that I am doing about 80% of my apparel shopping on line lately.

Alex 05-14-2007 11:16 PM

I've never bought clothes online. Well, other than shoes. I've been wearing the model of Saucony running shoes for almost a decade and the same model of Rockports for just about as long so I can safely buy those online.

But never clothes. Of course, until a couple weeks ago it had been a few years since I had really shopped for clothes in a regular store either (generally it is "I'll take one of whatever shirt is closest to the door").

blueerica 05-14-2007 11:31 PM

Edited to rephrase:

Stop being all "non-shopping blah blah blah" in this mindless self-indulgence thread.

;)

Alex 05-15-2007 07:02 AM

Ok, ok. If I had $300 to buy one item of clothing today...I'd buy whatever shirt was closest to the door at Macy*s and spend the rest at Cinnabon.

Ponine 05-15-2007 08:18 AM

I KNEW I liked Alex!

3894 05-15-2007 08:53 AM

Leaving just enough for this sassy vintage number:

Haha! All right... all right...

You know. IRL, I actually don't do a lot of shopping. Probably because of the whole "I'd rather spend my money on X" thing (usually travel, gadgetry). But... this is more of a "well, if I had to spend it on clothes..."

As a more serious response to the "buying clothes online" question, while I don't do it Lani does so all of the time and I can't think of any major horror stories and returns are generally straightforward.

Stan4dSteph 05-15-2007 10:25 AM

I'm in the market for a cute, fashionable trench coat. Something that will work in cool weather and that is more in the dressy casual vein. I only have parkas for cool, rainy weather and I need something that's a bit more formal for work or travel.

Let me know if you come across anything, fashionistas.

Not Afraid 05-15-2007 10:58 AM
