Treasures

Just got this from a friend:

I’m also on deadline for a new wave of Walt Disney Treasures. Last year the folks at Walt Disney Home Video had assured me that our series was over. Naturally I was disappointed, but I could scarcely complain, having had a successful six-year run. Then, just a short time ago, they decided that the Treasures would be a natural outlet for two projects that were already in the pipeline: the first-ever collection of Walt Disney’s silent Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit cartoons, with newly-commissioned music scores by Robert Israel, and a new feature-length documentary about Disneyland prepared for the park’s 50 th anniversary. Oswald will be accompanied by Leslie Iwerks’ feature about her grandfather Ub, The Hand Behind the Mouse, and the Disneyland doc will be supplemented by a number of vintage shorts and TV shows about the park—including some genuine rarities. Add to that Volume 3 of The Chronological Donald [Duck, that is] and you have our three newest volumes, which will be released on December 11. More details to come.

Really interesting, as these were announced (with pictures on the website and everything) as part of the Walt Disney Legacy Collection. (like the True-Life adventure series.) I wonder what the story is on that? I'm happy to get the Disneyland doc at long last, in any case. I am now hoping (really really hard!) that a widescreen version of the 'People and Places" short entitled "Disneyland U.S.A." will show up in the extras. Oh please somebody tell me it will!

I have Disneyland U.S.A. on video. It's one of my favorite shorts on Disneyland. The color is absolutely beautiful.

Although I have a trio of the Treasures sets, the series got off to an awful start by releasing edited versions of Disneyland TV epsidoes and, in classic Disney fashion, baldfacedly lying that they were complete and unedited.

I don't like being lied to and defrauded when making a purchase. It makes me unlikely to buy that brand again. As such, I've only bought the two other sets that I reeeeeally reeaally wanted (and yeah, depending what's on it, that Disneyland 50th set might fall into that category).

Disneyland

Don't know anything about that but I do know I too want the Disneyland one. Especialoly with the tease of the rarities. The one that disappointed me was Disneyland '59. Too much parade.

I knew about these sets being released at the end of the year but, like iSm, I am a bit reluctant to buy the DVDs after some of the false advertising Disney used to sell the past releases.

On the Disneyland DVD, disclaimers were plastered over footage of the Tahitian Terrace, footage of the Mouseketeers was edited out of the opening day broadcast, and other nuisances popped up.

I wanted to buy my dad the Chronological Donald Volume 2 but when I saw the DVDs for myself I was upset that some of the video quality was rather poor. They used old video tape transfers from the 1980's for some of the cartoons.

I think it's wise to rent the DVD's before buying them.

Rumor has it that the Treasures series was canceled when Disney decided to lose the Leonard Maltin connection. Maltin was publicly annoyed when it came to light that the Donald volume 2 set was inferior. The Legacy Collection featured a mouthpiece named... I can't remember his name. Frizney? Something like that.
Anyway... now that two of the three announced "Legacy" DVDs have been announced as Treasures tins (Maltin is back, btw), I wonder what happened to the Destino Legacy DVD. I know that that Frizney fellow had a lot to do with the completion of the Dali short...

Disney claims that there'll be a 'rather ambitious' DVD release in either 3rd or 4th quarter 2007. The DVD will include 'a really comprehensive documentary about Salvador Dali and Walt's relationship, the birth of this movie [Destino], and its completion'.

Of course, now that we're finally caught up with them all......damn.

(Maltin is back, btw),

Funny thing is, Maltin was annoyed not at Disney for releasing inferior product with his name stamped on it -- Maltin was annoyed that the online community was blaming HIM for stamping his name on inferior product.

Sorry Leonard, but your "Krusty the Klown" defense didn't even work for Krusty. I'm still not buying diddly s**t with your fake grin on it.

Dang I just picked up last years releases yesterday to complete our set since the 2nd Silly Symphonies seemed to be disappearing and I didn't want to get stuck paying $50 for a used copy. Any chance we might be seeing Zoro anytime soon?

mousepod 05-19-2007 08:42 AM

The first season of Zorro, which was previously only available on Disney DVD in France, is now available through the Disney Movie Club. You can either buy each of the 5 discs individually (though I don't understand why anyone would do that), or as a box set.

Almost Time for Wave 7 of the Treasures Tins

Of course I've pre-Ordered the Disneyland, Secrets Stories and Magic. I'm on the fence about Oswald (I've never seen an Oswald short to my knowledge, silent or sound)

Prepare to be Maltinized

RStar 11-06-2007 02:41 PM

I wonder how much of this Disnelyand disc will be repeated from the first Disneyland disc?

mousepod 11-06-2007 02:47 PM

This is the third time they announced the Disneyland disc. It was originally going to come out for DL's 50th and then it was going to be the second wave of the series that started (and apparently ended) with the True-Life Adventures. It looks like a keeper.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit - DVD Talk

Here's the review from DVD Talk

I'll probably rent it and not buy, probably.

As far as I'm concerned, the Oswald shorts are secondary to the excellent Ub Iwerks documentary on disc 2 (making a quiet DVD debut). That alone makes it a must-own for me.

So you've seen the documentary I take it?
Dammit, it is always the extras that kill me! ;)

katiesue 12-05-2007 02:47 PM

I have the documentary saved on my DVR. Ovation was showing it a couple of months ago. I really enjoyed watching it.

Morrigoon 12-05-2007 02:51 PM

By the way, if anyone hasn't bought the Disney Rarities DVD, I have an extra to sell.

Gn2Dlnd 12-05-2007 02:51 PM

The documentary is great. I think I saw it at the El Capitan, been waiting for its release on DVD ever since. Oswald is definitely one I'll pick up.

BTW, Leslie Iwerks' documentary on Pixar is wonderful as well!

lashbear 12-05-2007 04:25 PM

The Disneyland disk gets a good write up there. I also have it on Pre-order.

Thanks for the link! I meant to look and see and didn't! I definitely have had this one on pre-order.

Not Afraid 12-05-2007 07:11 PM

We're seeing the Iwerks Pixar film next week. I will definitely buy the Oswald disk. I saw Hand Behind the Mouse at UCLA (along with some of Ub's "other" work) and Leslie spoke afterwards. It was fascinating.
