Pirates 3: At World's End
I know no one's seeing the movie till tomorrow night at the Park, but it's inevitable this film, riffing as it does off the classic Disneyland attraction, deserves a thread of its own ... and not merely movie musings in the omnibus thread.
I don't know if anyone here is going to the Park premiere tomorrow, or even just to ogle stars on the Main Street red carpet. I'm not even planning on seeing the film till it's out on DVD. But I had an interesting tidbit of a story I thought I should share. My ex-girlfriend, Kelly, works at a small record label. One of their clients is a good friend of Johnny Depp's. So tonight, he walks into their office (the friend, not Depp) with a beautiful, hand-crafted, custom-made guitar that's a gift from Keith Richards to Johnny Depp, which the friend is bringing over to Johnny's house tonight to present to him. I just thought if anyone's going to the red carpet, you could try shouting out "Hey, Johnny, how'd you like Keith's Guitar Gift yesterday?!?!" - rather than, say, "Oooooh, we love you, Johnny!" ... and that might work better to grab his attention, and even stop to ask you how in hell you knew that. The guitar has a pirate somethingorother on the back, so if you get a chance to talk to him, you can show off your psychic abilities and know that he'll be thinking of you quizzically thoughout the evening, and even later that night (or morning) when he gets home ... and sees the guitar. ;) |
I'll keep that in mind as I'm crammed uncomfortably into the press photographer pit tomorrow.
|
I thankfully have talked Madz out of the red carpet. Last time was amazing, she got about 30 autographs. But it was also madness at the end, and I can't imagine that will improve. Plus how does one improve upon this shot?

Cool story, by the way. |
We are going to a midnight showing at El Capitan next Thursday night/Friday morning.
|
Hee hee...I can think of an improvement on that shot...:p
I think that comment would get more attention and I'd also rather say something like that than 'I love you Johnny!!' {I'll save that for another time...;) } Agh! This reminds me I wanted the kids to get me a ticket to join them for the movies early showing. Alex, how cool is that? I mean, you don't make it sound so comfy but seriously, much better than being crammed in with everyone else trying to get a shot. {if you want them} |
It's an interesting experience to shoot red carpets but I don't know that I'd say it is fun. They are extremely pushy, and can be extremely rude. They can be funny too, but they're livelihood is hoping to sell a couple of the photos they take. And then the person you think maybe had a bit part in Numb3rs spends 40 hours standing right in front of you while Tom Hanks scurries by in 2.3 seconds.
Plus, for an event this big I'm a third class press citizen and will be treated accordingly. |
I'm going Saturday (Opening weekend) over at El Cap. Not expecting much since #2 sucked and I've already took a peek at the "storybook" version and I"m not at all pleased with what I see.

I have to say Johnny is the nicest celebrity and takes care of his fans :) |
A good friend of mine will be at the premiere.... nowish.
Haha. |
I can't wait to miss it!
Oh wait, I promised my friends I'd go with them to see Pirates. Damn. Parts I & II reminded me a bit of every uber budget comedy from Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines to Spielberg's 1941. In other words, enjoyable in a sort of Dialing-For-Dollars-Sunday-afternoon UHF-tv movie way. I fear the third will be no different. |
NM and I accidentially ended up there. We had three hours to kill near Anaheim this afternoon. Arrived at the resort around 3:00, saw the signs that DL closed at 5pm and simultaneously said "Oh ****!" as we both realized the madness we were going to encounter. We got in no problem, but many passholders were turned away for not having a handstamp. Apparently this was the only day in history you need a renentry handstamp even though you carry a pass with your photo printed on it. Some very unhappy APers.
We got up Main Street without any problem. Due to my quick (30 second) sidetrack near the hub, we arrived at the Adventureland entrance a moment after it closed. We went into Fantasyland, checked out Nemo, rode Matterhorn, Pan, Buzz, and Space with no wait. They took us off the track at the end of Matterhorn with a promise of a second ride. Then the CM got into panic mode screaming at guests to unbuckle and get off. They took a few other bobsleds off as the ride was shut down. We did not get our second ride, and could see a big bobsled backup. It seems they put too many onto the tracks and they were afraid of them bumping at the end. Nemo had a few people in the queue and hoods up on the subs. We speculated it was a test run with DL bigwigs and families, or maybe they were going to let celebs ride after the movie. Well, we decided to leave and avoid the red carpet, but of course we got sucked in. We saw castmembers freaking out over dummy heads standing on fences, weird people who camped out for 10 hours frustrated that we walked up and had the same view as them, 6 foot 5 men holding their children on the shoulders, girls going ga-ga, piles of unattended purses, bags and backpacks, and a million cameras in the air hoping to get a good shot of the "who is that" walking by. The funny thing is we didn't have a camera or camera phone with us. No photos. (BTW - When I say "saw" I mean glimpse, top of head, back of head, far away, through armpits, behind trees, under bright lights in eyes.) We saw that Hanging with Mr. Cooper guy Mark something, Chad Michael Murry, Apollo Ono, Joey Fatone, Cuba Gooding Jr, Kobe, Carlos from Desperate Housewives and some other cute guys and gals the rest of the crowd seemed to recognize. Our best and closest views were of Geoffrey Rush with the Monkey and Gore Verbinski. A few times we were walking out to leave and found another decent spot to watch, so we "saw" a few more celebs. Finally as we were near the front of Main Street, we saw Orlando and Johnny. At that point we were able to leave satisfied, and avoided the mass exidous. We left as soon as we glimpsed Johnny (yes, he looked cute) and made it back to our other engagement only 2 hours late. They still served us dinner as we listened to Dave Foley emcee a hilarious auction. We had a good day. Now I am going to bed. |
Haha.. I'd love to hear Dave Foley emcee an auction.
|
But did you mention the guitar??

I would have thought that seeing this movie was an inevitability for us even though we knew beforehand that it would suck, much like seeing the Haunted Mansion movie. But the last one was SO bad, so very heinous, that I can't possibly want to a) fork over 9 or 10 bucks, b) spend 3 hours watching it plus an hour or so before buying tickets, getting seats, and watching previews, and c) have the memory of its suckiness in the the back of my mind for the rest of my life like an eternal diet soda aftertaste.
It would take some stellar reviews to get me in the theater. Oh, btw, if you give them money for crap, they will MAKE MORE CRAP. Pick your movies responsibly. Thank you. :p |
I liked the second movie so I encourage you to spend money on it so they'll continue making movies I like.
|
I liked the second movie. I didn't care for the ending (and I don't care for any movie ending that just sets up the next movie, such as The Empire Strikes Back).
|
Yeah, I'm with Alex. I like a good, silly movie, that knows it's a silly movie, and puts its heart and soul behind being a silly and fun as possible.
(Unlike many silly movies which are self-aware to the point of paranoia and desperate attempts to offset the silliness by way of self-conscious apology or sarcasm, which almost never work and inevitably ruin the film) |

I hate it, though, when it is obvious they are just leaving open a door in case they want to use it later. |
We have our midnight showing tickets. I'll post at 4am or something. Or I can do a running commentary during the movie via a Blackberry.

We've got tickets for Thursday at 8. Maddy will be surprised.

iSm I didn't see your guitar post until after the event, plus we didn't get that close.

Jack running from angry natives as a shish-kabob is silly. Dueling on a rolling water wheel is silly.
Having Jack be a dick instead of a scoundrel is messed up. Elizabeth became a bitch, and Will went from vaguely galant to unbearably milquetoast. The characters were savaged, were horrible to each other, and were made completey unlikeable and unsympathetic. And yeah, the "story" was merely a string of events. Perhaps that's not fair, considering it was the set-up of a longer tale ... but that's what it was. And making me hate the characters simply did not inspire me to want to see the rest of the tale. Where are the reviews of Pirates 3??? |

With the things they can do with digital trickery nowadays - I think it's high time that we get a full-length Hollywood blockbuster featuring all super deformed characters. If they did it for Pirates, they'd save big bucks on Keira.
|
At least in the movies she looks fine to me.
Anyway, I can now tell you (but won't) what I think of the first movie. How's this for a sign of our modern times: "I'm really sorry to tell you all of this but only half of the movie was downloaded to the hard drive." Now I'm going to have to go back Wednesday night and sit through the first hour and a half again to finish watching the movie. |

That's not the current cover. This is:
![]() And here's a link to the spread. She completely looks like a bobble head. |
If you say so. I don't generally like them super thin and I don't find her particularly attractive but she looks fine to me in the pictures posted here.
|
Just heard a news clip that apparently Keith Richards didn't see his cameo at the premier as apparently he fell asleep.
|
LOL. yeah, that sounds right.
she may be thin but she looks a darn sight better than the 12 year old they have modeling the dress in that pic. |
Thanks for the link, NA.
Well, I think she does look beautiful. Quite wispy and I love the vintage style clothes {wtf is that parachute skirt? A joke, right????}. Her make up is, of course, lovely. But, I wonder what she looks like in person. The camera adds pounds... |

The good news for me is expectations. Since the last movie was worse than month old chum, I'm not expecting much from this one other than to get the kids off my back about seeing it. So it won't have to reach very high to meet my expectations for it. Perhaps Disney should have just paid off Royce Mathew to help write the script for the second and third movies. |
Pirates 3: At World's End
I am waiting a week or two maybe three. Since i will be leaving for Vegas on Friday morning. Now i do have to be up at 6am and since i work on Thursday evening til 10:30pmish i can not get to the midnite screening like i originally hoped i could. No big deal for me. I really want to see it but i've heard good and bad and if it is worse than the 2nd one which i've been had some insight into then i'm not gonna be a happy camper. It's like do 1 film and no sequels. It seems the sequels never outshine the oringial first movie anyways.

She was quoted in several magazines this week as saying that she doesn't shower as often as one should, and that she often smells rather "musky". I'd rather she smelled "musty". Then her natural scent would match that of the Pirates Of The Carribean attraction at Disneyland, and really, how fitting & awesome would that be? I think Keira Knightly is absolutely adorable but skipping many a shower when you can most likey afford one made of diamonds is a tad bit rancid. Musky, musty or whatever. It's all stank ass to me. |
Ew. Maybe Keira can hook up with that other bathing-challenged celeb Ethan Hawke, and they can be the couple that zlick once lusted after ... but, um, no thanks. skanks.
* * * * BTW: Crappy reviews for Pirates 3 in today's L.A. Times and Daily Variety. |
Oh, and I've read a ton of crappy reviews today.
Apparently, the movie is waaaay too long (nearly 3 hours), convoluted, confusing, unfunny, boring, grim-looking, and a total frelling mess. More than one reviewer commented on the unexpectedly dull and constant exposition, but I like best the way Nathan Lee phrased it in the Village Voice. Quote:
Hahahahaha. So, I won't be watching this one night on Netflix after all. (I divide boring 3-hour movies over 2 nights.) |
You'd have to be pretty stupid to find it confusing.
But I'm pretty sure you really won't like it. |
Well we're still going to a showing tonight. After some confusion (and someone thinking that the showings wouldn't sell out) we will be seeing a DLP screening.
YAY Explosions! |
We're still on for our 8 PM showing. Maddy would kill me if we bailed.
|
There was scattered applause at the end of the screening last night so personal experience will vary apparently. Critical reaction is definitely low.
|
On the upside though, the guaranteed continued financial success of the series has Imagineers working overtime to overlay new attractions.
|
I am thinking about not going to the midnight El Cap showing tonight. The reviews aren't doing it for me, I am tired and don't feel like staying up until 4:00 a.m.
And the pretentious side of me is disappointed that my sister-in-law only got general admission seats and not reserved. |
But you could watch the sun rise when you got home!
|
Well, the video game (PC version) is a great big steaming pile of whale vomit.
No, I take that back, whale vomit can be quite valuable. |
All I know is it's the first time since Shrek II that Alex has expressed a willingness (let alone being proactive and expressing an interest) in going to the movie theatre, so I'll be going.

Well, of the three "third movies" so far this summer I'd say Pirates is the most worthwhile of the three but none of them came out with a slam dunk. The rottentomato ratings aren't good but at least right now they are pretty much exactly what they were for the second movie. And it continues to have a reasonably large split between regular and cream of the crop critics (which happened on the first two movies as well; the first one only had 65% from the cream of the crop).
I guess I'll have to put all my hopes into the Bourne movie. |
Ugh, the second Bourne movie sucked.
|
As with the second Pirates I liked the second Bourne, just not as much as th first.
|
Bourne? As in Matt Damon is coming back to the big screen?
I'm sorry, Capt Jack who? |
Yes, there's a new Jason Bourne movie coming out later this summer.
|
/drool.
|
Meh, once the gimmick of Jason operating on automatic with no conscious memory was gone, it was just another espionage pic. And a sequel at that. I don't care if it's based on a series of books, the follow-up books were sequels.
Oh, and no love story kinda added to the bore quotient. And to rid themselves of the love story, the film did one of the things I hate most of all hated sequel trends ... spend one movie furiously saving the life of someone vital to the main character ... only to kill them within moments of the sequel starting. Bah. But, well, Pirates opens wide tomorrow ... so we can go back to complaining about that series soon enough. |
Just another digital extravaganza. Gotta love Bob Mondello. One of the best mediocre review I've heard.
|
We just got back. It is long but I liked it. It wrapped things up nicely. Maddy gives it an 11 and a totally awesome dude rating.
|
Maddy's revised her review to "must see movie" :)

They keep making these craptacular Piratish movies and eventually, they'll have a whole generation of people pirated out - and not even the ride at Disneyland will have much appeal.

Pirate Masters starts on 5/31. Pirates pirates everywhere. It's overload. But I am still going to the movie- but not til next week for a twilight showing. Taking my family requires small loans to accomplish. |
Ok, here's my official review. Very sloppily written because technical problems with the screening resulted in me seeing at such a time as I only have 55 minutes to write it between getting up and going going to work on Thursday.
I think there is a movie in there just as good as the first. But it is so laden with excess baggage it is hard to see. I had a lot of fun with the last hour and bits and pieces of the first but the second is an almost complete waste of time. However, the faults are those found in the Lord of the Rings cycle (self importance, complex mythology, too many side stories, etc.) and think if Pirates were from source material that had been simmering in the popular consciousness for 50 years then many of the people (including myself) complaining about these things would think them wonderful and necessary. Chow Yun Fat is completely wasted. His storyline and the Tia Dalma storyline (which I am saddened to see many reviewers explicitly spoiled) could have been cut completely with necessary parts written in otherwise and trimming the movie to a frenetic and fun 2 hours. |
Not a bad review, even for a rush job. Not to say that it's not a "bad" review; it seems as if you're recommending precisely my chosen course - i.e., wait for the DVD with its convenience of nap breaks and fast-forward.
From what I've heard though, and without spoiling anything ... I understand the post-credits bit is rather important toward understanding a key story point. |
If so, then except for is sappiness and that the love is true, I missed the significance. And even then you can be told all the details without having to sit through the ILM company phoonebook.
|
I liked it. it probably seemed a little long to me because of the big-gulp I had reaching its end before the movie did. beyond that...yeah, I'd see it again.
may yet. |
I really liked it. Much better than the 2nd, not a giant set up for another one but it is left open for a 4th if they choose to go that route.
Maybe about a half hour that could have been cut throughout the movie but all in all it was really good. A few ride references, some really funny stuff and amazing effects. So with that, I realize that I have less discriminating tastes* in movies than most everyone here, so you'll probably all hate it. *I was super excited over the Transformers preview We did leave before the end of the credits - can someone post what was there in spoilers? |

I want to see it
On a big screen With dialogue drowning sound But I will pee first |
The reviews in both Entertainment Weekly & People Magazine were far from kind. However, I tend to enjoy all of the movies that critics don't so a trip to the cinema may be in order tonight! :)
Do you know the last time I was in a movie theater was last summer, when my boyfriend & I went to see the second Pirates movie? Apparently, we're not big cinema folk. :( |
I actually feel much the same way Alex did about the 3rd Pirates flick. While there is some unnecessary baggage from the second film (IMO), a good job was done, overall, in that they mostly went back to their roles, it was good storytelling, and while there were many plotlines, they essentially went into the conclusion, which I cannot say for the second film.
As dry as that sounded, I really did like the 3rd. I left satisfied, which I cannot say for the 2nd Pirates. (I left that movie exhausted and irritated) |
Just came back from Pirates 3.
We really, really did not like it. So much unnecessary dialogue - so much mind-numbing violence. Zero sense of adventure. I didn't care about any of the characters. I think I would have preferred it if they finished the story begun in 2 in some other medium - a comic book perhaps - and then carried on with what will probably be the 4th (if the tease near the end of this one is the plan), a quest for the Fountain of Youth. Two serious thumbs-down from the mousepod family (and we really liked part 2). |
Maybe they'll have Christopher Lloyd show up as Ponce De Leon?
|
Just came back from seeing it at El Cap. Really enjoyed it. Way, WAY beter that part 2 - Part 2 doesn't exist! It would have been better as a "Star Wars" screen crawl. 3 is in no way perfect but it is a better written/ crafted script IMHO in the sense you're not forced to believe everything. Unlike #2 which pushed you thru the film, this one brings you along and lets you experiance. I really notice the soundtrack this time and it was really well placed. I think the characters were more equal RE: screen time and it just wasn't all "Jack."
I'd venture to give it 8 bornieo's out of 10. I'd see this again before watching the second anyday, which, BTW, I haven't seen since seeing it at EL Cap last year. |
Well I just got back and I enjoyed it overall. Yes, it was about an hour too long. Yes, there were plotlines that were set up and ultimately went nowhere.

Spoiler:
But despite that, I wasn't bored, except at a few chatty moments, and anything having to do with Will Turner and his daddy. |

We saw it last night.
I truly recommend the last hour of the film. If you can force yourself to sit through two hours of excrutiating hell, the last hour will be an enjoyable pay-off for you. In fact, just show up two hours late to the cinema to avoid most of the messy & convoluted storyline that is Pirates 3. :( I agree that an hour could have easily been trimmed! How so? Spoiler:
I was so disappointed. Mainly because it's way easy to entertain me & this failed in doing so. It was a dark movie, both figuratively & literally. At one point, I completely dozed off, only to have a humiliating muscle sleep spasm occur in my right leg, sending it kicking in the air & startling my boyfriend. At least that got my adrenaline goin' and kept me awake for the remainder of the film. Good golly, though, that film would just NOT END. My favorite scene in the movie? Spoiler:
Okay, it's early Sunday morning & I'm not making much sense. I just was so saddened by this film & like mousepod I enjoyed the second Pirates! Now I have to brace myself for Transformers, which, after seeing the trailer, my boyfriend declared looked like the coolest movie ever & we are so going to see it! Yay. :( ;) :D |
Well, I really enjoyed it. It was piratey, arrrrr.
I was really disappointed by the post-credit scene. I could've predicted that ending. I was hoping for some hot undead monkey action. |
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. An amusing diversion. I really liked Jonathan Pryce's rowboat scene...
|
It was just OK for me. Found myself bored during a lot of it, but was never really confused at all the different plot lines.
But as I think about it, I keep dwelling on the parts I didn't like, so perhaps those hold more weight with me. Jack's hallucinations....funny, I suppose, for the first minute, but it went on and on and on and on....got old really fast. The proposal and wedding during the battle. Stupid. Just left me with an "eh" feeling. I'm not usually picky about movies....I liked Dead Man's Chest. |
Overall, I liked it. It was very long, and could maybe have been trimmed.
Jack's hallucinations; went on maybe too long. The crab thing.... ? Cut it. I like Tia Dalma, so I hesitate to say cut her storyline. I do wish that had been done better, maybe. I loved the wedding. I loved Barbossa's opening for it! I loved that Liz was once in a while useful, holding her own in battle. Of course there were still the "maiden in distress" moments but bleh. I hear the critics hate this, but I rarely agree with their assessments anyway. |
I loved Barbossa's dialogue before they dropped! That whole sequence was my personal highlight in what was otherwise a very meh movie. And I totally agree with Scaeagles about the wedding. I thought it slowed the pacing and detracted from the battle between Jack and Davy Jones, which was far more exciting. As for the post credit scene? So throwaway. I was really hoping they would have made some attempt to resolve the plot with Davy Jones and Tia Dalma, which was the only relationship in the movie I even remotely cared about.
My husband took the shortcut and had a nap about midway through. He didn't miss anything. :D |
Quote:
|
Okay, I'll say it. I loved the movie!
Sure, there were extraneous scenes that could've gone away without hurting the whole. I didn't care for the multiple Jacks, but they did help set up the great entrance of Jack and the Pearl. The Tia Dalma/Calypso supbplot begged either exclusion or expansion, and I don't think the movie could've survived expansion. Overall, though, I was happy with the resolutions given. Setting the Elizabeth/Will story up as the beginning what would become a great tragic sea tale satisfies my sense of the romantic. The maelstrom battle was wonderfully epic. And I think this was one of the best movie weddings ever! I may be a sap, but I'm a happy sap! see you at the zoo ron |
Susan said it was fun and funny.
And she was on the E! news story about the midnight showing at El Capitan. She was right behind one of the twin Jack Sparrows. So was the RAC, Susan's sister and sister's husband. But if you blinked, you missed it. |
I liked it. The family liked it. Yeah - those parts you speak of - I just don't think about them much. I would like a little Calypso/Jones resolution though.

I loved the first movie. Saw it 5 times in the theaters. Thought it was Hollywood blockbuster at its best, and considered Jack Sparrow one of the best characters written for and performed on film.
I really, really enjoyed the second film. As much as the first? No. The surprise was gone. Jack's character wasn't as bright or unexpected, but I liked what they did with Elizabeths' character even as it bothered me that they overused the same jokes from the first film. And I greatly enjoyed Nighy's Davy Jones. Dug the new monstors. Didnt' mine the non-ending. Figured the first was a one-off, and the second and third would go hand in hand. The second film had me thinking a lot about the mythology borrowed and the character developments. Saw it 3 times in theaters. I very much enjoyed the third film. Spoiler:
All said, though, I won't see the 3rd movie again until its on DVD. So as much as I might praise the sequels and be amongst those who like the films, the one I'll keep watching over the years will be the first. |

Damn! It seems everybody that I've spoken to off of this Board just loved the movie! My co-worker said that she and her husband absolutely loved it! My boyfriend's best friend loved it! Golly, my boyfriend loved it.
Alas, I did not. It's surprising, too, because I'm so easily entertained. I can flip on Sabado Gigante & giggle. I could probably watch a balloon float by and giggle. Very little about Pirates actually entertained me. by the second hour I was dozing off. If it was up to me, I would have called it Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Wit's End, because that's where I was by the third hour. :( |
I'm looking forward to the inevitable 2-3 hour fan edit that combines the best of parts 2 and 3 and jettisons the rest. If the World's End DVD comes out right after Thanksgiving, I'll bet the fan edit turns up by late January. That's going to be the "repeat viewing" version.
|
I'm frankly surprised so many here to seem to have liked it. I don't put all that much stock in critics, but I tend to read them with an ear towards agreements with my particular tastes ... and I think I would agree with the critcs rather than most of the Swankers.
Alas. I'm not putting this in spoiler tags ... because, HA, I haven't even seen the movie. And, from what I understand (and why I am commenting on it), it's not even in the movie! (But be warned, I'm spoiler-talking in the next paragraph). So many people seem confused about Will's fate as master of the Flying Dutchman. From what I understand, the scene(s) which better explained his fate were cut, and most people don't understand that, as long as Elizabeth is waiting for him on land when he returns in 10 years, his tenure as ferryman to the dead is over. It seems a lot of people are getting the impression Will can visit Elizabeth on land once every 10 years, but is master of the Flying Dutchman for eternity. Being that it's the resolution of the series' main love story, I think it's quite an important point to get across. I've heard half a dozen people go from being pissed at the ending of the film when seeing it, to loving the end of the film once this is explained. I find it a major fault of the filmmakers if this point is unclear to the audience. |

Recalling that, in Pirates 1, Barbossa is shot before the gold piece is returned to the chest - and therefore he should be unaffected by the deadly shot (sparing the audience the subsequent absurdity of him dropping an apple in his death throes that he wasn't holding in the first place). |
meh- may the franchise die a peaceful death.

If that is the true significance of the ending (and without it in the movie it isn't) - what Eliza said - then what would happen to the "the Dutchman must have a captain" thing?

But I think what I should have said is that I was unfuffilled by the film. I agreed with the Capt on this point Quote:
If what Eliza said is true, than I totally understand the whole Davey Jones issue. Why he was angry, etc.... but instead I walked out angry and confused. regardless of the will and elizabeth thing. (which I frankly dont give a rats behind about) |

It is unclear- and frankly I don't buy it either way because there is nothing there to say one way or the other. It''s all heresay cause nothing is in the stupid movie. GRRR- stupid movie. |
