Submarine Voyage - LoT Inaugural Ride!

Yes, the return of the Submarine Voyage with its new Finding Nemo theme is the most exciting thing to happen at Disneyland since the 50th, and the first big (practically) new E-Ticket since Indiana Jones in 1995!!!

I'm sure we are all anxious to ride ... and for those of us who'd like our first ride to be with other Swankers - - we have some plannin' to do. When can most of us meet up for a submarine meet?

Assuming none of us win the AP Lottery for sub spaces during June preview days, the ride officially opens to the public on Monday, June 11, 2007. Understandably, jobs prevent most people from being at the Park at opening on a weekday. And we all understand that being at the Park at opening would be the best way to avoid an unbearable queue wait.

So, let me throw out some pros and cons of weekend dates, and weeknight visits.

The first Saturday that the attraction is open, June 16 - - happens to be a day that Ghoulish Delight, Cadaverous Pallor, NirvanaMan, Babette, and zapppop cannot go (jobs, blackout dates, other obligations). That Sunday, the 17th, is Father's Day ... and many of those same people cannot go to Disneyland on that holiday, which must be spent with family.

Soooooo ... the popular options dwindled to either waiting till the following weekend (June 23 or 24), when the attraction will have already been open nearly 2 weeks ... OR, biting the bullet and hitting it one evening after work during the opening week.

Discuss.

(oh, and vote ... a preliminary poll should narrow things down)

Moonliner 05-28-2007 07:06 PM

Given my situation, I shall be watching this poll with interest.

keith - SuPeR K! 05-28-2007 08:22 PM

OMG I love your avatar iSm!

I know I will be out there at some point soon after opening to brave the line, but I would definitely prefer to do it with all of you :) Considering we pretty much stared at water the entire day I was there last, I think we will be just as amused to be doing it again in line ;)

Prudence 05-28-2007 09:43 PM

I obviously won't be there, so my opinion doesn't really matter - but if I *were* there, I'd vote for a weeknight. I don't think I could wait two weeks with it sitting there, taunting me. Hell, it's hard enough being so far away and having it taunting me.

Plus, I think the waiting in line would be fun. Like staking out the perfect fireworks spot. Not something I'd do every time, but fun for the opening.

Not Afraid 05-28-2007 10:13 PM

I'm up for Crack of Dawn meet. I HATE waiting in line. Mostly, by body cannot handle standing for that length of time.

BarTopDancer 05-28-2007 10:46 PM

The 16th I have plans in LA, the 17th is Fathers day but I can go earlier in the day and I'll be in FL until late the 23rd. Any time during opening week (except the 1th, that may be game 7) will work - unless there is a parade.

Oh heck, just pick a day and if I can make it I will.

Tref 05-28-2007 10:52 PM

Well, I could not choose any of the above because I could never make it to the park anyway. So, instead I voted, yes, for allowing the rabbit to eat a bowl of Trix cereal.

ozron 05-28-2007 11:15 PM

I'd love to join you guys. Any chance you could hold off until next summer?

Depending on how long the line is, it might take us that long.

Gn2Dlnd 05-29-2007 01:07 AM

I'm in NA's camp, put me down for dawn's crack. Zero interest in a four hour line stretching all the way to IASW. I love you, John Lasseter, but I have my limits.

Disneyphile 05-29-2007 02:15 AM

I'm pretty much available except the 23rd. I'd love to ride amongst the swank! :D

Ghoulish Delight 05-29-2007 07:21 AM

While crack-o-dawn weekend would be my preference, as iSm notes, we are unavailable. Grrr. So it looks like we're going to try the middle of the week.

You aren't unavailable the weekend of the 23rd/24th are you?

Like Prudence said, I don't think I can wait that long. I'd show up for that, but I'd really like to plan something sooner as well.

I swear, the only truly bad thing about my job is that I work alternating Saturdays, and they continue to fall on days where I have somewhere wonderful to be. :(

I vote weeknight - Tuesday or Thursday would be great.

innerSpaceman 05-29-2007 07:47 AM

I can understand two camps: I can't wait till the 2nd weekend! -and- I can't wait in that damn, long queue.

Personally, I'd be willing to attend two LoT cruises - - a Tuesday, the 12th Cruise for the Can't Wait to Ride It and a Sunday, the 24th Cruise for the Can't Wait in Line to Ride It.

By the 24th, it won't be an inaugural cruise for most ... but maybe that's the day we can "float" a Sub ... and fill the entire vessel with Swankers.

(Swankers who'd be willing to wake at the crack o' dawn.)

Mousey Girl 05-29-2007 09:20 AM

Any chance to ride some rides with Swankers is great! I don't care if it is the 1st ride or the 5th ride for those around me. I just hate that I have to wait for my trip for 3 more weeks.

Brigitte 05-29-2007 09:45 AM

I'll be down the week of the 11th-15th, so if it's a weeknight, I can make it!

Isaac 05-29-2007 10:53 AM

I think we should go on the 24th. Most people won't be blocked out or have other obligations. So it would be the best chance to fill an entire sub. Also, the LoT (as a whole) has not been at the park for ropedrop since the first 50th anniversary almost two years ago. This would be a great reason to finally do that again.

JWBear 05-29-2007 10:56 AM

June 24th at opening, that is my vote, since the weekend before is Father's Day and I wont be able to go. And getting there during the week is a big hell no for this LA boy.

According to Yesterland, it's 38 guests per sub.
Quote:

Beginning June 1959, the Nautilus and seven sister submarines—the Triton, Sea Wolf, Skate, Skipjack, George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Ethan Allen—allowed 38 Disneyland guests at a time to take their own voyage to the North Pole, and to see sights that Commander Anderson and his men never saw.

Isaac 05-29-2007 05:26 PM

Extra geek information

The names of the submarines & their numbers are:
  • 107 NAUTILUS
  • 207 SCOUT [formerly SEAWOLF]
  • 307 VOYAGER [formerly SKATE]
  • 407 MARINER [formerly SKIPJACK]
  • 507 SEAFARER [formerly TRITON]
  • 607 EXPLORER [formerly GEORGE WASHINGTON]
  • 707 NEPTUNE [formerly PATRICK HENRY]
  • 807 ARGONAUT [formerly ETHAN ALLEN]

I believe they removed the engines and made room for a few more guests, not to say you still might be smokin' something.

Isaac 05-29-2007 05:35 PM

Wiki claims the ride capacity is now 40 guests per sub.

CoasterMatt 05-29-2007 05:39 PM

The electric engines take up less room than the old diesels.

The 24th sounds good for a large LoT meet.

Anyone that wants in can show for the weekday meet...Tuesday the 12th is a good tentative date.

Hmmm - maybe we should hold out for the 52 Anniversary - anybody have plans for the birthday this year?

CoasterMatt 05-29-2007 06:59 PM

Its on a Tuesday, so I won't be there.

BarTopDancer 05-29-2007 07:16 PM

I'll probably be there after work. Using all my vaca time for FL and hockey.

innerSpaceman 05-29-2007 07:38 PM

I might take the Birthday off and do a day of it ... but it's much more likely to just be the evening.

Whichever way ... there's no Zlick hotel party this year. Or next. We're giving things two years off so that the specialness kicks in again once Birthday falls on a Friday in 2009.

* * * *

I don't hold out too much high hope that we can find 40 Swankers to fill a Sub at crack of dawn on Sunday, the 24th. And, unlike for a certain Carousel stunt, I'm not willing to reach across the aisle to that other message board for recruits.

Still, let's shoot for as big a crack o'dawn LoT Submarine Meet on the 24th as we can muster. And I might just be in for an ohmygod Icantwait evening Meet on the 12th (but that's doubtful).

Is the 54th B-Day special for some reason unbeknownst to me, or is it because is is on a Friday?

innerSpaceman 05-29-2007 08:50 PM

Friday. And because - at my age - skipping two years is the equivalent of most people's skipping one.

Humm, our plan was to close down the park on Saturday and sleep in Sunday before hitting the noon hub meet.

Well F' that! It's time for a new plan.

We'll close down the park on Saturday and make it back early for a Sunday sub run! No pain no gain says I.

So with an 8:00am opening (which implies no rope drop) what time do you all expect to be at the gates?

That's a complex question. The parking structure doesn't open until 7:30am or so, which puts us behind all the hotel guests in the area, who have early shuttles and such. Meeting earlier means parking elsewhere and walking long distances, or even taking public transit.

Either that, or while cars are waiting in line for the structure to open, some jump out and head for the gates to reserve a spot. That would totally suck for those in the cars though.

I just had a look at OCTA's site and they actually recommend using both their own "Just Click" trip planner and Google Transit. I tried both and Google Transit gave me three options, while Just Click said "no trip plan found". Guess I need to grab a bus book from work.

innerSpaceman 05-30-2007 11:39 AM

I'll drop zapp off and he can save a place in the turnstile line for us. Them's that don't like 1 saving a place for a dozen can bite me.

Oh, and I'm just realizing this mega Sub meet we are planning is in the midst of Moonliner Weekend (followed barely 4 days later by Swank Camp).

If the park opens at 8:00am, what time do the gates really open? Could some of the "hotel guests" who just happen to be staying literately across the street save spots for people?

Not Afraid 05-30-2007 11:43 AM

The best way to get to the subs in the morning is to ride the monorail in.

Actaully it's Moonliner and Mousey Girl Weekend.
:)

And it's also the day of Moonies Birthday dinner at Steakhouse-55. For which there are still seats avaliable....

innerSpaceman 05-30-2007 12:19 PM

And NA is right, monorail entry will be best ... and less people (well, less dumb people) to get pissed off at space-saving.

When I rode the monorial over from the DLH last year it worked more like an attraction queue. Once you made it to the top of the stairs you were funneled into line which would make catching-up to others challenging.

Of course the monorail was in shuttle mode at the time so that might have had an effect.

Does it always open as soon as the front gates and are there any restrictions as to hotel guests only during busy times (like late june) ?

Mousey Girl 05-30-2007 01:28 PM

Keep in mind you will be with a hotel guest that morning. :)

I little digging and I learned what NA and others already knew. Access to the monorail is limited to hotel guests only during early entry hours and Sunday ain't one of them.

Since this is a break of dawn type thing, should we plan a breakfast in the park for after our Nemo trip is complete or try and eat before hand?

(Is the Ihop 24/7?)

Mousey Girl 05-30-2007 02:02 PM

Nick can always eat!

innerSpaceman 05-30-2007 03:45 PM

Early Entry Hours? By that, do you mean when the Park is open to hotel guests for an hour before opening to the public? Or do you mean that the monorail is only for hotel guests for an amorphous amount of time after the Park opens to the public?

Moonliner 05-30-2007 04:46 PM

To clarify my obfuscated ramblings......

On days where early entry is offered, only hotel guests are allowed to ride the monorail during that early entry hour. As soon as the gates open for one and all so does the monorail. So for a Sunday meet, which is not an early entry day, this would not be an issue.

The last time I was behind one holding the line for many, I just looked at the girls behind me, said "If they are going to cut, we can too". I stepped out of line, walked ahead, and cut back in in front of the new mob that had replaced the single. The girls behind me didn't brave it. The group just looked at me, turned and gossiped with each other, but didn't try and stop me. Others have this option if we happen to do the same.

Who cares if you pack too much fun into too little time. It is summer man. You have all of July and August to recuperate ;)

We'll likely shoot for 6:30 (with the usual crap shoot of the parking structure possibly pushing that to ~7 before we actually get IN the park).

Hm. By then it should be "Disney Pixar Bruckheimer Sub Mariner Voyage Finding Davy Jones."

Best line from the attraction: "Arr, you made me ink!"

swanie 06-04-2007 11:36 AM

Very cool. I imagine I'll head over before evening traffic, so I'll be hanging out.

Brigitte 06-04-2007 12:15 PM

We'll be around the park all week, we can do any night :)

alphabassettgrrl 06-04-2007 12:17 PM

I'm planning to be there the 12th. All day and night, unless life intervenes.

Cadaverous Pallor 06-04-2007 04:00 PM

The 12th it be. So says I, Cadaverous Jones.

Is there still a weekend meet, then? Just too hard to get up there on a weeknight from south county.

Wuss. :p

If I come I'll be coming from RSM. Just depends on work. And if I was out celebratin the night before.

Morrigoon 06-04-2007 05:12 PM

I don't get off work till 5:30, so even driving directly there I can't make much earlier than 7. Not a matter of wussy, it's a matter of can't make it.

:D

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 06-04-2007 11:18 PM

So - be the meat on the 12th in the evening? or will it be an after dinner affair? What be the meat?

Ghoulish Delight 06-05-2007 07:08 AM

That's a good question. My instinct is to say fend for ourselves food-wise. I know I'm not going to want to show up at the park and head to food, I'm going to want to get in line ASAP. And who the heck knows how long that line's going to be.

DO or do not. There is no try.

alphabassettgrrl 06-05-2007 09:32 AM

Pick a time to meat up, and plan to eat before that. Park's open until 11. Is 6pm too early for people? Would 7pm be better?

Ghoulish Delight 06-05-2007 09:35 AM

As I mentioned earlier, between 6:30 and 7 is when we'll likely arrive.

;)

Brigitte 06-05-2007 10:18 AM

So do we meet up before getting in line or just whoever gets there first gets in line and the rest of us cut in? :)

Ghoulish Delight 06-05-2007 11:46 AM

That may be a game-time decision. I think the initial plan should be meet somewhere (DTD monorail station?) at 7, head to the subs once we have a quorum, stragglers can join us in line. There seem to be a few people who will be in the park well before that time. If they see anything that would give reason to change that plan, we can alter as necessary.

Last minute changes are fine, but I leave town Friday night and will have limited (cell phone browser) access after that. I can PM my cell number to anyone who might be able to keep me posted (katiesue has it already though).

Chernabog 06-05-2007 03:00 PM

I still don't understand how the monorail will be any faster than waiting by the Kodak store on Main Street at rope drop, waltzing thru Tomorrowland and up to the Subs. The monorail takes at least 10 minutes before you're in, and the in-park walk takes about 2. ;) By that time the line will be 5 hours long!

Moonliner 06-05-2007 03:10 PM

On Sunday the 24th the park opens at 8:00am so there will be no rope drop.

The first monorail leaves DTD 5 to 10 min before the gates open. It then waits at the Tomorrowland station until the gates open. Giving it's riders direct access to nemo while the mobs rush all the way down main street.

That's how it works if all goes to plan.

If the monorail gets delayed for technical or other reasons then you can sit and sit while the unwashed mobs descend on Nemo. Also on busy days it is possible that the monorail will be reserved for hotel guests only with no prior warning.

On the other hand, if you go for the gate, at worst you have one monorail load in front of you with just a few hundred guests tops.

Disneyland Adds Magical '8th Day' to the Week

Quote:

In the spirit of Walt Disney's renowned ability to create magic, the Disneyland Resort is sprinkling some pixie dust on the calendar and virtually creating an "8th Day" in its operating week in anticipation of high demand for the new Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage attraction, which resurfaces June 11 in the Tomorrowland Lagoon. The subs return as part of the ongoing Year of a Million Dreams celebration at the Disneyland Resort. Starting June 11, the day the subs resurface, guests will be allowed to join the queue until official park closing and the subs will continue their voyages to find Nemo for up to 2 1/2 hours after park closing.
Source

Kevy Baby 06-06-2007 06:04 PM

That means that you could be getting on the subs at 2:30 in the morning. I wonder if they will keep Main Street Shops open until 3:30 (one more hour for your shopping convenience)?

And what happens of the wait time at closing exceeds 2-1/2 hours? THAT could be interesting if some poor schlep who has been waiting in line for three hours gets told that he cannot go on :p. I doubt it will get to that, but the potential is there.

This could make for a fun LoT quest: hanging around the entrance to the queue until 11:59:59 and then jumping in line at the last second. That would make one REAL popular with the CM's

And I'll bet the CM's just LOVED this decision!

€uroMeinke 06-06-2007 08:11 PM

I thought that was the case with any ride in the park -s long as you were in line before closing, you got to ride. I guess this just means it's a longer line than Peter Pan.

Although I now have 2 numbers!! I am starting to feel important.

MouseWife 06-06-2007 11:59 PM

We went this morning with the time of 11/12 a.m. but when we walked up at 10:05 they let us on early. We did have to wait a bit to board but that was fine, it was in the shade.

No spoilers from me. Well, except to say I did not freak out. Oh a bit, a tiny tiny bit {claustraphobic} upon 'submersion' but then I just snapped myself out of it by the 'duh' factor...submersion? :D

The hubby did try to freak me out saying a lot about the lack of air, how long we would be in there, just to name a few things.

I had the pleasure of seeing a wonderful new friend, whom I met during the Biggest Lashbear Meet. It was nice to see you {if you read this!} and I did have a fun time at the park.

We didn't really stay for long, the place was packed. The kids rode SM, we all found Nemo, went over to check out the new Pirate themed Island {I am sure we missed a lot} grabbed a popcorn and then headed over to DCA where we split up; the chickie and co. heading to ToT and we went for lunch at the GCA. {ooo, did I get those all right?}

We then headed home {after lunch for the couple at Native Foods} and then went to see Pirates...we felt like we were still at Disneyland.

There is an impromptu LoT meet of people meeting after work around 6:30 - 7 next Tuesday (6/12). Get GD's cell phone number and call him when you are getting close.

There is another larger general meet on Sunday, 2/24 - first a.m. Final finite plans still to be determined.

All of the above can be found previously in the thread if you wanna cull through it.

Cadaverous Pallor 06-07-2007 10:57 AM

Mostly because I did not spot the typo first.

Ghoulish Delight 06-07-2007 05:48 PM

Okay, umm, things are about to change.

I've received reliable word that right now, they are letting anyone with an AP onto the ride. And the crowds are low.

Our own Borneio has ridden it 4 times today already.

CP's still at work, so I don't know for sure, but something tells me we'll be heading there this evening.

What that means for us and next Tuesday's meet remains to be seen. For anyone planning on going, it sounds like there are still going to whole lot of folks that will be going, so don't unplan. But you may need to pick a different cell phone central switch than me.

More info about the 11th from disneyland.com:
On June 11th, following a grand opening ceremony for media and invited Guests only, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage will open in the early afternoon.

alphabassettgrrl 06-10-2007 12:00 PM

I can play phone central. PM me and I'll give you my cell number. I'll be there from about 10am, maybe 11, but definitely as early as I can get there.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 06-11-2007 12:45 AM

Basicly all of Tomorrowland from the Matterhorn - to Ariel's Grotto to the big ball in front of Space Mtn was blocked off today for a special blue carpet event. It was all dolled up for the celeb party - I saw Courtney Cox and the blond chick from Friends and tons of Plaids running around - then I saw Ed Greer walking around.

Chernabog 06-11-2007 11:05 AM

So the park opens at 8am on the 24th. Is there a time and location set for the meet yet, I didn't see one when I was scrolling back thru this thread.

Not Afraid 06-11-2007 12:18 PM

I got a call from Disney Daniel this morning. He is the 20th person in line waiting for the ride to open at noon. They've started the queue neat the Monorail exit and it was all of the way back to IASW at that point.

What I thought was especially cool is that they covered a Monorail in a yellow "condom" that was decorated to look like a Sub. It passed over head during the opening ceremony.

He's taking pictures and promises to post later.

Gn2Dlnd 06-11-2007 12:25 PM

The founding member of the 24th Submarine Attack Group seems to be, at least for the moment, missing in action.

However I would vote for:

Be at the front gate early (as in 7:00am?), bee line it for the subs at opening and ride. Repeat as necessary.

I thought the plan was them's that could get there early (ie me) would stake out a spot at the main gate for them's that need to park.

If the gates open at 8:00am, what time do they really open? Would you be able to make it from the structure to the gates before they open?

Would you suggest a later time and just dealing with the wait?

Ok, I think I got my wires crossed. I thought it was in front of the Monorail Station in DTD at 8?

If not, then The Boy and I will meet up inside the Park, near the Subs shortly after 8. For some reason he thinks food in the morning is important to his well being.

The gates do open at 8. Generally, one can make it from the structure to the gates by somewhere around 10 'til (assuming you were clever enough to arrive before the 7:30 opening and are near the front of the usually slow-moving line of cars).

I guess it all depends on just how many people we're talking about. How many already in line, how many showing up from the structure. If there are 5 people in line, and 15 people appear to join them, I personally consider that a bit rude to those that would be behind us.

If it's more like 10 people already in line and 5-10 people joining the line, not as big a deal.

My suggestion is to try to get as good a head-count and time-estimate as we can. If the numbers look reasonable for slipping a few people into the entrance line, then go for it. If it's looking like it's going to be a mob of people rushing in from the structure, or that too many people can't guarantee they'll actually make it before 8, we might want to pick a rally point inside the park.

It was 1998 when Disneyland grounded the submarine fleet, calling it costly and dated. Then park President Paul Pressler, leader of the park bean-counters, wanted the ride shut down because it hogged space, proved too expensive to maintain and cycled riders through too slowly.
But the ride had its champions, including Marty Sklar, then Disney's creative chief. He publicly threatened to lie down on the busy street that fronts Disneyland to prevent the subs from being deep-sixed. It was a rare case of an internal Walt Disney Co. dispute being thrust into the public eye.
"Oh, I said it," Sklar said. "I meant it. I'm sure glad I didn't have to throw myself across Harbor Boulevard…. I never gave up."

I find this excerpt a tad more interesting

With long lines anticipated, park executives are devising ways to keep guests occupied: They'll be selling extra snacks (cheddar fish crackers) and handing out activity guides. And the Finding Nemo will remain open for up to 2 1/2 hours after the park closes, adding up to what Disneyland calls an "eighth day" in the week.

I read on another board that the wait for the subs, at 4pm, was 6 hours. I just can't fathom that. Also, with where the que is, it passes right by the smoking area, across from Matterhorn. I see some problems with that.

Forever. And Stitch could have been pressing his butt up against the monorail windows.

Seems to me that in its inaugural summer we stood about 4 hours in line for Splash Mountain. Considering the significant local AP boom since 1989 and the more restrictive capacity, 6 hours wouldn't surprise me. Though they are stupid people (no offense to any stupid person on this board who waits in the line).

Why are they stupid people? Because they are willing to wait in line for 6 hours for a ride, or because they effectively keep the full-price guests off the ride by making the line 6 hours long?

I'd say the former. No ride is worth 6 hours of my time.

MouseWife 06-12-2007 08:55 AM

Aw man, I didn't see the monorail sub version. I think it would look neat zipping through on its' way through the park.

I wouldn't wait six hours for anything. But, on the other hand, if you are an APer and have seen everything and your only intent is to ride this ride, why not. If this is the only trip you are taking for the year, I think I'd put it off. Or ride it last thing at night.

alphabassettgrrl 06-13-2007 10:39 AM

Last night they were saying that if you got in line at park closing, you'd be guaranteed a ride. We waited about 2, 2 1/2 hours for it.

katiesue 06-13-2007 10:48 AM

The CM we spoke to said they'd stayed open until 1:30 the night before to clear the line.

Eh. Main Street's open an hour after closing anyway, and I've surely seen Peter Pan have a 45 minute + line at closing. 1:30's pretty late, but it's not 2:30, which is what they were gearing up for.

katiesue 06-13-2007 12:20 PM

The CM also mentioned that they closed when there was no more line, implying you could have gotten in line at say 1:15ish and still ridden.

Morrigoon 06-13-2007 12:26 PM

Seems strange to me, because at most attractions, a CM is sent to the end of the line at closing to "close off" the line (eg: stand behind the last person in line to disallow anyone else to get in line after closing time)

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 06-13-2007 12:44 PM

I was about 10th from the end of the line on Nemo closing. They had 2 CM's at the end and others around to turn people away. When I got out it was about 1am. Only Security and a few CM's were around. Otherwise it was noman's land. Pretty cool.

Motorboat Cruiser 06-13-2007 12:50 PM

Stopped by the park this morning. Got into the Downtown Disney parking lot at 9:10, got right on a monorail, into tomorrowland by 9:25 at the latest.

Wait time: 3 1/2 - 4 hours.

A half-hour into it, we decided to ride it another time. Four hours of standing in the sun was not appealing. We rode Snow White, got lunch, went home.

Productive morning, that was.

Moonliner 06-19-2007 03:33 PM

So have we decided on final plans for the Sunday meet?

Monorail, Front Gate, How early, black or white tie?

innerSpaceman 06-19-2007 03:38 PM

I believe Monorail was determined to be a fool's errand. They only start running once the Park opens and it's doubtful even first riders will reach the Subs before first runners, er, walkers.

So ... it's front gate, Esplanade wait. I hope some people will be getting there before 7am. (Several people will be out late at the Cemetary Screening the night before, and 7am would seem an unlikely arrival time for them).

Those getting there early should try to sneak a coupla dozen bagels, some cream cheese and a few quarts of orange juice through bag check. ;)

Kevy Baby 06-19-2007 04:53 PM

Moonliner 06-19-2007 05:16 PM

Assuming we hit the subs first thing I would expect most of our wait time to be outside the gates so we could be finished by 8:30 or so. Would anyone else like to plan on a full in-park breakfast after the subs?

Ghoulish Delight 06-19-2007 05:29 PM

We can't commit to anything post-ride as we have lunch plans in Laguna.

Gemini Cricket 06-19-2007 05:32 PM

Yes, please tell, how early? I had some plans change on me so apparently I should show up at an ungodly hour to ride this thing. Breakfast after sounds good to me. And a nap.

Good question.
I was hoping someone would just let me cut before boarding the subs...

:D
I'm kidding.

innerSpaceman 06-19-2007 09:29 PM

Also keep in mind that the parking garage doesn't even open till 7:30, with arrival at the Esplanade by 7:40 the earliest possible (and highly optimistically unlikely) time.

You'd think that would put everybody in the same boat.

And you'd be wrong.

By 7:45 there will be thousands of people in the Esplanade ... and a Two-Hour wait for Subs if you get there after them.

Anyone staying in local hotels should try and get there by 7ish, and save a place for the drive-there masses. (And perhaps anyone staying just for Subs and then a'goin to Laguna can park carefree at McDonald's on Harbor with no worries about their vehicle causing non-customer suspicions.)

€uroMeinke 06-19-2007 09:33 PM

So when does the DTD lot open?

Not Afraid 06-19-2007 10:12 PM

Is this a normal Sunday morning? Since the subs have been open for a couple of weeks now, I would think that the initial crush would have mostly subsided by now (pardon the pun - it was unintentional).

I'd expect not because I'm a pessimistic jerk, but I will be at the gates early on Friday (also a non EE day) so I can give you a report then.

innerSpaceman 06-20-2007 08:25 AM

Oh, and the DTD Lot doesn't open till 8am.

Anyone not staying at hotels who has the urge to get there early (and bring bagels!) should probably park anonymously in the big Mimi's / McDonald's lot on Harbor.

I don't either, but assuming I get there first I will talk to the people behind me and let them know that I'm saving space for multiple friends.

At the risk of being criticized as an overzealous anal retentive geek, is there any preference left-to-right in terms of which entrance gate to line up for or should I just take the one with the shortest line at that time?

Kevy Baby 06-20-2007 08:52 AM

Did we ever get an answer about the Downtown Disney LoT?

Mousey Girl 06-20-2007 08:54 AM

I am so confused on the whole EE thing. I thought Friday was EE, but Saturday was not.

We should be down there early enough to check our bags and collect our passes and still be able to get to the park early Friday morning. We are leaving here at 4am, but it all depends on the traffic. My goal is to make it down before the traffic really picks up, and make it to DLH by 730ish. Of course, Boy wants to try to leave at 3am. Since it is just us now, we tend to get up and out pretty quick.

Okay, so right-of-center there's a tree about 15 feet in front of a couple gates. If the lines are past that tree, take a close look. Often, because of people routing themselves around said tree, one of those lines ends up splitting and feeding 2 turnstyles. If you can find that line (don't know how obvious it will be before the gates open), that's the line you want to be in.

Sat:The park opens at 7:00am for EE, 8:00am with no rope drop
Sun: The Park opens at 8:00am with no EE and no rope drop.

Sounds like a question in a good online quiz:

"Riding a Disneyland Ride or Waiting for an MRI at the Emergency Room?"

Chernabog 06-22-2007 11:00 AM

UGH I am going to try and do my best to be there, but the friends I was coming with are starting to Piss Me Off.

Three weeks ago we were all set. Everyone up super early, on the road, etc. etc. Now all of a sudden, I'm coordinating 5 people's schedules, and everything is up in the air. Nobody can just go with the MF'in program. One person needs to wait for his ex-boyfriend. One person is not sure if they can get the day off work. I'm just .. ARGGHHHH.

Well it's the last day I'm going to be there till October-ish, so I'll be there come hell or high water. Or the fact that I won't have a car since mine's been in the shop for two weeks to replace a f'ing VALVE SPRING. That's right, two weeks for a SPRING to be replaced.

Phew. Ok thanks, I've vented, I feel better now.

Can't wait to re-ride Nemo. I think we should play the "every time the word 'Nemo' is said on the ride, we pinch IsM's butt" game ;)

innerSpaceman 06-22-2007 11:13 AM

Ditch those fools. Come to Cemetary Saturday night, and then come home with me and zapp and SuPeR K! and Leigh-Ann and we'll get about 2 hours of sleep and then head for the Park!

Find some ride to the Cemetary (hint, I'm begging Gemini Cricket to go, for a myriad of reasons - - he lives near you now, no?). Then, we'll get you back home after Disneyland somehow.

Morrigoon 06-22-2007 11:16 AM

Wait, is your car not going to be ready Saturday?

LOL I can't outright ditch the remaining people -- plus me on 2 hours of sleep is SO not pretty (especially when I pass out around noontime). It'll get figured out tho -- and I might do the cemetery screening anyway, then head back to my pad a convenient 20 minutes away.

Are L-A and K! going to the screening too?

As far as my real, non-grandma car is concerned, I may or may not have it back tomorrow :-\

innerSpaceman 06-22-2007 02:47 PM

Yes L-A and K! will be at the cemetary. We're having beach picnic on Venice Beach in the afternoon, followed immediately by lawn picnic at the cemetary, followed by a spooky film in a graveyard, followed by non-slumber party at my place, followed by a day at Disneyland!

omg, I got exhausted just writing that.

:iSm:

Sorry but i'll miss it on Sunday due to work. Joe sorry to hear you won't be back at the park til October. :( That bites big time. I don't know when we'll get a chance to meet then. Since my work schedule is all fcuked up seriously. But then in October i'm super busy anyways. Sad to miss you one final time.

True but still.it seems like i hardly get to go on a Sunday anymore plus Saturday evenings i usually work so the Cemetery Screenings are definitely out for me. But i guess October will come fast enough.

Ah, good to know that you will be completely rested and in the best possible mood.

I'll be there, but I don't know what kind of condition I'll be in

Moonliner 06-23-2007 06:03 AM

Wow! Saturday was insane. We arrived right at one hour prior to opening. The lines were only back as far as the monorail. We selected the line to the far right. As we waited they started several new lines to our right and we were able to move up quite a bit. I plan to try that again.

The rope drop was the crazy part. 10,000 screaming screaming meemies all dashing for the subs... scary.

We will try to be at the gate 1 hour prior to opening tomorrow to save spots (all the way to the right.) Hope to see you all there.

Without the rope drop this should work fine.

CoasterMatt 06-23-2007 10:12 AM

Every time I hear the word NEMO on the ride, I'm gonna burp up some more maple bacon...

Now i'm being informed hubby has to get up super early in the morning to go. I never can sleep when he gets up early for work or anything else. I am just disgusted right now. I think i need to get ahotel room or something so i can get my sleep.

Ghoulish Delight 06-23-2007 11:52 AM

Our afternoon plans have been commuted to later this summer. So is the plan still to get breakfast after riding?

Gemini Cricket 06-23-2007 12:53 PM

Breakfast! Breakfast! Breakfast!

I'm going to be there bright and early. Chernabog's carpooling with me.
:)

CrazyLegs 06-23-2007 01:02 PM

Hi all I still have not been in the closet as I call it yet. :(

I hope everyone has fun

Moonliner 06-23-2007 04:29 PM

Breakfast is a great plan. I trust you will be able to recommend a suitable location?

Also I have a Disneyland Hotel guest parking pass for anyone that wants it for tomorrow courtesy of MouseyGirl. You only need the pass to leave not on the way in. Just say you are visiting a hotel guest. PM me if you would like it.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 06-23-2007 04:46 PM

I hear Cafe Orleans has a great breakfast.

Kevy Baby 06-23-2007 05:57 PM

I was thinking (if we stayed in the park) of a return to an old tradition of going to the River Belle Terrace.

CoasterMatt 06-23-2007 06:12 PM

What's this breakfast you speak of?

Yeah, before it closes. You never know if it will even have breakfast after the remodel.

€uroMeinke 06-24-2007 06:15 AM

We're up and getting ready

Cadaverous Pallor 06-24-2007 06:46 AM

Us too, leaving at 7

lashbear 06-24-2007 07:01 AM

Wedge a buttock for me, guys !!!! :D

Kevy Baby 06-24-2007 02:32 PM

Breakfast was at Cafe Orleans. We got in there in about 15-20 minutes. The wait at Riverbelle Terrace would have been MUCH more than that.

Cadaverous Pallor 06-24-2007 02:55 PM

Woowee....that was fun. :D

GD is asleep and I'm about to crash, but here are the pics. We got nearly everyone on the ride together, opening logistics aside, which was exciting and fun. Reminded me of the 50th - cell phones blazing, crowds running, people trickling in to line. I was bummed that Bornieo didn't make it - we missed you! We ended up staying longer than I thought we would, just because the group was so great. Had to leave abruptly, since most of the rest were already in line for the Monorail and we didn't want to hold you up with farewellagains. I'm sure they're still drinking and relaxing at the Grand Cal.

All in all, great morning, regardless of our varying opinions of the ride itself. The group makes everything fun.

ETA - if anyone wants full size versions of certain pics, PM me your email address.

lashbear 06-24-2007 08:34 PM

So ?

Is it really water or is it some imagineering trick?
Did you find Nemo?
Is it dark?
Did you get claustrophibic?
Did you have a churro for me?
Did you have a Sidecar for me?
Did you have a Dole Whip for me?
Did you have a Monte Cristo for me?
Did you have a Mint Julep for me?
Did you have a Corn Dog for me?
Did you have a ride on the Haunted Mansion for me?
Did anyone get NirvanaMan's pants off for me? (BTW nice threesome with Chris & Matt)
Did anyone get video for me?

I was there with you in my dreams last night.

Cadaverous Pallor 06-24-2007 09:03 PM

Hey Rob - while we were on the sub, listening to fake Aussie accents, I said aloud "I wish Rob were here." :) So you were there in spirit, mate!

Matt, those pics are now in my "Special" pictures folder.

Not Afraid 06-25-2007 11:23 AM

What a great day! It had all of the elements that make for great memories (as per usual with this group). You could've heard a pin drop as we all rode the subs - all 23 of us - until we stopped for a "crab crossing" ans we noticed the mermaid and the sea serpent. They CM's were really nice (and patient) with us and even let Morri join us as we were ready to board the ride. Hats off to the great CMs! We all sang "We all ride on a Yellow Submarine" before launch.

We had a great breakfast at Cafe Orelans (side of Bacon, please) and, again, the CMs were fantastic - seating all 24 of us within 15 minutes (Lisa, party of alot, your table's ready.) :)

After some fun in the Island we headed back to use our Space FPs stopping by the Hub for a few quick hellos. We split ourselves into 2 groups of 12 and made sure we distributed the weight
between the cars. OOPS. The sides of bacon must've put us over the top of the weight limit, because we sunk the thing. At least Moonie was on the sunk rocket and got to experience that kind of unusual fun. Plus, that meant that most of us got to ride with the psychedelic glasses.

We decided it was time for a ride on the Monorail and we had possibly the BEST monorail experience ever! We had an entire car to ourselves and, while in the station, someone started singing "We all live in a Yellow Monorail". As we left the station, a CM yelled "Keep Singing" so we did - the whole way to DTD, making up verses as we went. We arrived at DTD singing the chorus at the top of our lungs. (And changed it to "We all get a Yellow Hand Stamp" as we left the park.) It was monumental fun.

We headed over to the DL Hotel and ended up sitting on the grass under a tree outside of the LOST BAR. We even had a server offer to get us drinks (an offer which we, of course, accepted). It was something new and different for us and it always amazes me that we can find new fun things to do at the DLR. We also hung out with our newest friend, SkinnyLycan, who immediately joined the board. Welcome Skinny legs. ;))

Some folks returned to the park for dinner and FW and some us went to Steakhouse 55 for dinner. Dinner was lovely and it was great to spend some quality time with Moonie, the lovely headliner, MG and the patient Boy (as well as Lindy).

I was amazed that when we left, it was still light outside, for I was EXHAUSTED, fulfilled and very happy.

Thanks for an INCREDIBLE day everyone!

I had SUCH a good time yesterday, my friend Sara was so totally impressed with everyone :) :)

I totally lost my voice today -- I think from laughing so hard about IsM tripping onto that girl's wheelchair on mainstreet.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! *hides head with jacket*

Gn2Dlnd 06-25-2007 12:45 PM

Great pictures and great trip reports! I should have lobbied harder for a Saturday meet, Sundays are cheese days. Cheese ain't gonna sell itself you know.

Oh yeah, yesterday was SO much fun! I don't think I've laughed that hard since CoasterMatt got hurt at work.

I was exhausted by evening though - actually went to bed around 10!

Ghoulish Delight 06-25-2007 02:04 PM

Ugh, I wish I had had the energy to stay. But considering that within 5 minutes of getting home I fell asleep on our wood floor for an hour, it was probably best that we left.

I wish I could have been there. After barely making it into bed at 11:30pm (2:30am) after a very long day and waking up feeling like I was hit by a Mac Truck it was not meant to be.

That is L-A and K!'s friend that we all met yesterday. So yeah, a friend, but not my Sara-friend. Nor is it my friend Nick and his on-again off-again boyfriend Trip. :) There's a pic of SkinnyLycan sitting on the monorail, earlier in this thread.

And I totally thought he said his SN was "SkinnyLICHEN", and I was like... huh? Is that like a tree fungus?

(Lycan is a werewolf reference to the Underworld series of movies.... lol)

Mousey Girl 06-25-2007 03:11 PM

We just made it home. Boy had a blast. When we went back to the park last night, all he could ask is if we were meeting anyone there and if I could call them to find out.

As for minding manners, he is already pretty warped, so not much fazes him anymore.

innerSpaceman 06-25-2007 05:29 PM

Too Tired. Must Sleep. Random Thoughts:

 23 swankers may not fill a Sub, but they can make her sink by the bow if you load her just right.

And that much fun with an early morning ride can make me enjoy even a mediocre attraction like Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.

But I had more fun on the Submarine Voyage Special Edition Yellow Monorail, which has to go down as one of our most fun rides ever!
:snap: :snap: :snap: :snap: :snap:

:birdy:Our Swim Down photo in the skeleton cage on the Island Formerly Known as Tom Sawyer's is one of our best group shots ... ever!

:decap: The key to opening NirvanaMan’s hidden lyric genius is telling him we won’t sing the Yellow Monorail song on the way back in ... unless he comes up with a constant stream of new verses between every chorus.

  The Meadow is the new Grand Cal.

 Hahahaha - SkinnyLycan’s technicolor face reaction to the non-Nun flash. (‘cept I wish he’d use the screen name zapppop thought of ... "Mark Twink," which I find highly amusing and is meant only in fondness for a guy we took an instant liking to.)

:D TeeHee - SuPeR K! and Sarah’s enthusiastic late-night re-enactment of Mr. Fantasmic, who purportedly performed every character, film projection and prop in the show from his river-side seat. (And only a tenth as funny, I’m sure, as the real thing must have been)

:p The Lawn Battle of Not Afraid and Nirvana Man.:p

:coffee: Ah, introducing NirvanaMan to the wonders of Jazz Kitchen Soup. (so good, they should just re-name the place, "Soup Kitchen" - - or does that have a bad connotation?)

My first overweight Space Mountain rocket, pulled off to the side!

The wettest Splash Mountain ride ... EVER!

:snap: Lavender polka-dot chairs in the reception area of (Granville’s) Steakhouse 55

 Horrific Wheelchair collision laugh-fest.

I love it when out-of-town swankers come to town. Thanks for visiting, Moonliner (and Headliner), Mousey Girl (and The Boy), SuPeR K! and Leigh-Ann. It was Wonderful Disneyland Day No. 148, and so much fun to have fun with you all, and with so many of the folks who made the other 147 so much fun, too.

Cherny and SuPeR K!, thanks for introducing us to all those cool friends - what fun folks!

Let’s do it again!

innerSpaceman 06-25-2007 05:54 PM

Oh, and of course .... receiving a text message from zapppop at 2:27 p.m. asking me if I'd be his boyfriend again - - exactly one year to the minute from when he broke up with me via text message while I was also at Disneyland with a great many of the very same people.

I'd like to point out again that putting something NSFW behind a spoiler tag does not make it any safer for work. Since what tracking is done is done at the system administration level all that matters is that the picture came through and may have popped up in some watchdog's screen.

So, my request would be that unless the NSFW warning is in the thread title to provide a link instead. Just a request but it would be helpful.

innerSpaceman 06-26-2007 10:26 AM

Ever since the demise of film and the ascendency of digital ... I have relied on the photography of others to populate my memory image hoard.

I can't ever complain about those times when it's too fun for photography, because that's exactly why I've happily given up the camara habit. Almost everything photo-worthy is happening while I'm having too good a time to bother with taking pictures.

Thanks to all who photograph stuff we do as a gang, or photograph travels we take together. I'll never complain about the stuff that was missed.

But, oh boy, was some stuff ever missed last weekend!

Agreed - thought it seems as of late we've been really bad about this. I decided that we definitely needed some shots taken of this event. Sometimes it's us taking pics, sometimes it's others, but we do need to take our turn.

As it is, my current desktop is the absolutely lovely group shot of us at the Gamble house, which is wonderful, yet is missing quite a few swankers. We need to do more stop-for-a-second-and-smile full group shots.
