Food (redux??)

Okay since I read that whole "corn dog redux" and it seems people like to eat weird things, what I want to know is what is the weirdest thing that you eat that others find either uber repulsive, odd, gross etc. but you think is the greatest tasting thing on earth?? (I don't know if this thread has been done before but oh well.....)

For me, I think the weirdest is when we have a family gathering, I make my homemade potato salad, which is so tasty, and I find that dipping Nacho Cheese Doritos into the sald (like a dip) is soooooo good.

And hey, nothing too easy like McDonalds fries dipped in a vanilla cone. (Which I have to say is good too.)

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 02-23-2005 03:28 AM

-Fries with blue cheese dressing, nothing new.
-McDonalds Fries with Cheeseburgers togeather
-Penutbutter and Honey sandwiches
-i love real crispy Cornbeef hash!

I don't know, I guess I'm not an adventurous eater...

Baileykat 02-23-2005 07:36 AM

When I was little I used to love dill pickles dipped in pancake syrup. Kinda sour, kinda sweet..kinda good!

Miracle Whip sandwhiches...just MW and bread! Sometimes add Lays Potato Chips onto the sandwhich...yummy!

Mozzarella cheese and ketchup...tastes like a pizza.

Peanut Butter and Karo Syrup sandwhiches....still eat these, sometimes!

Spaghetti with canned Wolf brand chili..and ketchup!

Name 02-23-2005 09:20 AM

McD's Fries dipped in an uber gross looking mix of ketchup and mayonaisse.

And looks like this may turn into another thread for me to avoid like the plague.

cirquelover 02-23-2005 10:30 AM

I love fry sauce for my fries too!

A sausage McMuffin with the hash brown in the sandwich

I use cottage cheese as a dip for bbq potato chips

Hash browns with onions, meat(sausage, bacon or ham) and topped with cheddar cheese, sometimes I put sour cream on top Yumm!

I've been known to dip my bacon or sausage in maple syrup at breakfast when I have pancakes or french toast

SacTown Chronic 02-23-2005 11:05 AM

Orange peels.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 02-23-2005 11:21 AM

It's not so much that I have one kind of food or food combo that I love and others find disgustiong, so much as I'm a fan of the Thanksgiving Mix style of eating. 8 times out of 10, I can pretty much gather samples from everytying on my plate onto one fork bite. Peas, sweet potatoes, chicken, salad...all in one fork bite.

Not always, but usually I can do this. And it sometimes grosses people out. Probably reminds them of offal. I'm like a pig at a trough.

Cadaverous Pallor 02-23-2005 12:01 PM

Wouldn't be a weird food thread without me mentioning ketchup sandwiches. Ketchup and white bread, mmm. :)

This actually sounds really good, and I'm not a big fan of cottage cheese either.

These threads always make me try something weird and new. :D

Well, to start with, I loooove sushi and I know that for some people, sushi is the ultimate in disgusting. I love eel, salmon skin rolls, tuna, yellowtail, halibut, sea urchin, soft shelled crabs, etc... I also love oysters on the half-shell.

If you want more unique culinary oddities though, I can go there too...

- I like fried shrimp, dipped in a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise. It started as a kid with TV dinners and never stopped.

- I haven't done a ketchup sandwich but I've done more than a few mayonnaise sandwiches on a kaiser roll. Again, started as a little kid.

- I'm with Borneo on the crispy corned beef hash, the stuff out of the can that my chef roommate fondly refers to as "dog food". Love the stuff and am always delighted when I see it at a breakfast buffet. I think I'm the only one that eats it.

- Love peanut butter and honey sandwiches as well, but I also like to slice banana on them. I don't fry them though (with bacon), ala Elvis Presley.

- elbow macaroni and tomatos (the crushed in-a-can kind) with some black pepper. Nothing more, nothing less.

As most of this stuff is far from healthy, I try to avoid it all. Still, every once in a while you get those cravings for comfort foods.

Oooo! Me too! We've been eating this since I was a little kid! My Mom used to fix it as a side dish! Yummm! It's great comfort food!

Peanut butter on Eggo waffles with maple syrup!

While at work a few weeks ago, during one of those crazy chaotic days that just make little to no sense to anyone, the bosses wife (while in a tax-and-accounting-crazed haze) happened upon this odd little gem.

Around our office, we keep various snacks, like fruit, crackers, cheese. I watched her -- she was so into her quickbooks -- put a Wheat Thin cracker in her mouth at the same time she put in two green grapes. I started laughing my head off, and she said "Hey, that tastes like apple pie!" Still laughing, I walked away to do some work I left behind elsewhere. Then suddenly, I got hungry.. and adventurous.

And what do you freaking know... She was right... 1 Wheat thin + 2 green grapes = Apple Pie. No more, no less of any of those ingredients. I've tried other variations, and it doesn't work the same. The ladies of the office agree, and when we happen to have the ingredients, it's the thing to do...

mhrc4 02-23-2005 02:11 PM

im in with the sushi, i love it, some people cannot stomach it....

anyhow, the only really weird thing i love that most people would :ugh: at is when i was a kid, used to love peanut butter, banana and mayonaise sanwhiches..

on the other hand, my wife eats Ranch dressing on everything

Oh, she's one of those people. ;)

A few come to mind that I don't partake in, but have friends that do. I think they are crazy but hey...

- I have a friend who will only eat chocolate chip cookies if they are dipped in mustard.

- I have too many friends to mention that dip pizza in ranch dressing. For the love of god, people! Don't do that to a poor defensless pizza.

Hmm, just thought of another of my quirks. I like to mix peanut M&M's and popcorn.

blueerica 02-23-2005 04:07 PM

There we go!

I'm into the weird stuff. While most of it won't appeal to me, I'll try anything at least once.

I was raised, in large part, by my Japanese granmother who loved to eat smoked eel and mackerel, put fish flakes on her rice, who loved sushi, and we loved to grill squid. I was probably eating just about all of it by the time I was 4. Never shy with it, I suppose. So I guess the sushi thing never seemed that strange to me. Only delicious.

However, this macaroni & crushed tomatoes... WTF?!?! Just kidding! I've never tried that before, but I bet it's not half bad. My guess is that I'd probably want to add other stuff to it. Is it served warm or cold?

..And all of those are pictured on my yummy sushi jammies! :) In fact, wasn't it you who discovered the unagi on me? (on my jammies, I mean! I didn't mean for that to sound naughty! :p)

I, too love sushi! I'm a big ol' fan of spicy tuna, toro, yellowtail, rainbow rolls, and the fishy list goes on & on...

And at the movies? It's all about a tub o' popcorn, eaten at the very same time as Milk Duds! 1 piece of popcorn in the mouth + 1 Milk Dud in the mouth + an eager, drooly Ally = caramel corn. It's as necessary to my viewing pleasure as a suckie (Slurpee, or Icee, as the rest of the world calls 'em!) :) :snap:

MerryPrankster 02-23-2005 05:53 PM

I've never been into the combos or dipping thing. Milk duds with popcorn is good though. I haven't done that one in a long time.

I'm in with the sushi thing. I love oysters on the half shell, I could eat them by the dozen. Also love clams and pretty much any seafood. Raw or cooked.

Squid in Wor Wonton soup is delish. Squid in general is yummy, I love that chewy texture.

I've always eaten it warm. I don't think cold would be very good. :)

Peanut Butter on Rye

Prepared frosting out of the can. Preferably lemon or chocolate. Or both.

Not even my beloved husband, sexiest man alive, dares come between me and my frosting can. However, canned frosting would make a lovely post-coital treat.

€uroMeinke 02-23-2005 10:01 PM

I knew a gal in college who kept a jar of peanut butter by her bedside. She claimed it was the best chaser to certain other activities.

I'm right there too. I typically get some at the buffet, but it's never crispy enough!!!

My dog food is the Hormel/Mary Kitchen brand only. The other brands don't compare!

Yum!

My name is MBC and I like aerosol cheese.

Tito's Kitten 02-24-2005 01:58 AM

Okay Blueerica....
I am going to the store tomorrow to buy grapes and wheat thins!!!!!

Okay my dad had this total weird eating habit that I have to mention. My father enjoyed rye bread. He enjoyed his rye with peanut butter. He enjoyed his rye bread with peanut butter, butter and herrings packed in oil. Ughhhhh. He also had this habit of eating out of the vessel that that evenings meal was cooked in and believed in combining. (i.e. he would eat a piece of cake in a sea of milk in the saucepan that that evenings rice, noodles, etc were cooked in for dinner.) ?

I just can't help but think of Death Becomes Her when I think of eating frosting out of the can!!!!

Mousey Girl 02-24-2005 07:12 AM

Count me in on the hash, but it has to be topped with an egg. The egg needs to be either poached or fried (over meduim). My mom would do this for us for dinner. Yummmm!!

I also like pb&h sandwiches, but they have to be on San Luis Sourdough bread. It is better if the honey is starting to crystalize.

When I was preggers, before I knew I was preggers, I was working retail. I could not leave for lunch so I would bring it. All I wanted to eat were Triscuits and cheddar cheese dipped in ranch dressing. I also always had carrots dipped in ranch. This would be washed down with pinapple oj. I went through alot of ranch. The LM now wants ranch on almost everything, even corndogs (ew!).

Every so often I will get a wild hair and make something that I grew up with. David will pitch a fit, but will try it and end up liking it. I think he will eat it just because he isn't used to me cooking.

dsnylndmom 02-24-2005 09:42 AM

Love love love chili/cream cheese dip, 2 cans of chili 1 block of cream cheese microwave, melty fatty goodness.

I used to LOVE peanut butter and butter sandwiches

If I make microwave popcorn it HAS to be doused in tabasco

Fries and bleu cheese dressing, the chunkier the better

My youngest eats peanut butter & jelly with bologna in the middle and he also likes bologna and ketchup sandwich

Even more twisted, my youngest will eat a plate full, I mean FULL of broccili and cauliflower and carrots before anything else!! Something wrong with these kids of ours Sactown I tell you~!

Cadaverous Pallor 02-24-2005 10:58 AM

Mmmm, post coital snacking. I think anything tastes great after sex. Don't have any particulars there.

My friends and I went through a short phase of buying cans of frosting and snacking on them for an entire day. Whoo wee!! Wonderfully portable crack. I think I'd get sick if I did that today.

Not Afraid 02-24-2005 12:24 PM

One day I WILL eat again. But, it won't be aerosol cheese. ;)

Motorboat Cruiser 02-24-2005 12:59 PM

I suppose that the peanut butter, jelly and bologna sandwiches are out as well?

Betty 02-24-2005 02:30 PM

french fries with salt and pepper. Mmmm. Not very strange but not the usual.

alphabassettgrrl 02-24-2005 08:56 PM

Sushi- yep. Spicy tuna. Spicy anything. And then there's the sushi with avocado....
Corned beef hash out of a can? Oh, yeah. It's better with eggs on it but it's good by itself, too.
Cheese in a can? Yep. :) Fabulous.
Canned frosting? I have had such a craving for that lately. I've tried to stall it by buying a can of cream cheese, to be eaten with a spoon, but I think that's not going to cut it and I will have to find a store that carries the cream cheese frosting.

And I thought I didn't have any weird eating habits. :)
