Very Swanky PC

This is a PC mod that would look really cool in a room at the Grand Californian, or even better, the Gamble House once we appropriate it ;)

I gotta give props - that was really well done!

Capt Jack 06-19-2007 09:55 AM

agreed. its kind of disappointing seeing (some of) the responses of "dewd. like it totally needs a HL2 emblem on teh side. fo shizzle!"

I think its classy as 773H. wouldnt really go in my place, but that doesnt mean its not fantastic work

Moonliner 06-19-2007 11:21 AM

Capt Jack 06-19-2007 11:33 AM

I like the keyboard

JWBear 06-19-2007 11:50 AM

Cool!

I agree, though, that the particular stained glass pieces do not represent my idea of beautiful stained glass. The concept is ultrakewl though.

If I were wealthy enough, I'd have an office of ultra-high tech - all done in Jules Verne / H.G. Wells style of old skool faux futuristic. The stained glass computer case might fit in well ... and that monitor certainly would.

Beautiful, I love the design and look.

Imagine if someone would take this and mass produce it.

Kevy Baby 06-19-2007 12:54 PM

How about something like this:

But damn. The catalog just to see the prices costs $24.95.

Kevy Baby 06-19-2007 01:11 PM

Which to me means "if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it"

However there is a poor mans version avaliable

Kevy Baby 06-19-2007 04:58 PM

Yeah, but those white keys just render that one fugly.

CoasterMatt 06-19-2007 07:03 PM

I've been making colorful keyboards since the days of the C64 (I had a red and black Ferrari themed C128- thanks for tossing it out Mom). My last really spiffy system was my Amiga 4000T in copper - complete with matching monitor and patina.

Kevy Baby 06-19-2007 07:18 PM

There is the Tanomi Wooden Keyboard, coming in at over $2,500 (Yikes!)

But that lead me to Strange Wooden Gadgets You Never Knew Existed
Including:

A floating Ferrari F50-replica made of wood

A wooden camera by Olympus

USB wood sticks (in 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB capacities).

Solar Powered Wooden Copter

I know some of you do woodworking...

How hard would it be to make some of these?

I could see a computer controlled lathe automatically churning out the parts but is there an easy way to stain/buff all the individual keys? That, to me at least, would seem to be the hard part.

Kevy Baby 06-19-2007 07:32 PM

Lathe wouldn't help here (lathe's are for round things - bowls, legs, etc.). A CNC machine would come in handy, but not many of them are set up for wood.

And finishing is actually my favorite part. I usually prefer to not stain; rather, select the right wood to begin with. A hand-rubbed lacquer finish would be my preference, but with all those keys, it would be a MAJOR PITA.

figment1986 06-19-2007 08:08 PM

I wonder how long a computer made of wood would last... then again you could make a case from a dell case, custom made, then make a wood skin around it.

Morrigoon 06-19-2007 08:50 PM

OMG, I'm in geektopia right now! Of course any aspirations I may have had of modding are blown away by the sheer superiority of the work displayed in this thread!

But it WOULD be fun to take old computer parts (like keyboards, since they're cheap) and mess around with them to try it. Like the cheap wood keyboard looks like someone took wood grain shelf paper and just fitted it really well. I could see doing that, perhaps.

Hmm... keyboards ARE cheap... must consider giving modding a try....

If I ever learn how to wire extra LEDs, I'll probably have to give the cryogenic mouse a try:

CoasterMatt 06-19-2007 08:53 PM

If you want to dabble in case mods, a great case to start with, is the Lian Li PC65 - all aluminum, very well built with great structural integrity, and excellent airflow.
