What in the world have you done?!
It was brought up in Sooo...
And it makes sense to explore the odd jobs we've had. While I haven't washed dead people, nor have I sold non-existent gold - I've had a few jobs that don't exactly make a straight line on any grid. Things I've Done (in semi-chronological order): I was a fishing and lures expert. <cough> Made pizza and sammiches. Worked at a salon that specialized in high-end hairpieces Worked at a hostess in Newport when it was super chi-chi to be there. Worked at 24 Hour Fitness (5 years.. what the?) Was a Dental Assistant (What? 5 years? How old am I?) Worked for Peets (and loved it! Well, most of it.) Freelance writer (that's right...) Please, I know I'm actually not that interesting.. tell me you gold-sellers, body washers and miscellany out there.. WHAT DO YOU DO? And what have you done? |

Reference clerk, Science and Technology Department, Hamilton Library, University of Hawaii (second year of grad school). 10. Administrative assistant in Community Lending Division, part of the Real Estate group, at Wells Fargo. 13. Integration Project Manager for wholesale banking portal in the Wholesale Group at Wells Fargo. 14. Front End Producer for wholesale banking portal in the Wholesale Group at Wells Fargo. 15. CEO of a small internet company. 16. Functional design for online banking products at a company I won't name. Nothing very exciting. But I still have the streak alive of never having worked in food services nor had a job requiring I wear a name tag. If all goes well that'll be true when I die as well. |

|
Another fun tangent is how many of these actually end up on our resumes/CVs! In my case, about 5 do...

The jobs I enjoyed the most were working the convience stores. I loved seeing the same people every day. I truly enjoy helping people, and just wish that SBC hadn't taken the service out in favor of sales, or I would still be there. |

The worst job I ever had was pumping out toilet holding tanks on rental houseboats. The first day the boss handed me a pair of pliers but wouldn't tell me anything beyond "you'll see" when I asked what they were for.
Ladies, when the sign says no sanitary napkins in the toilet....there's a damn good reason. I want to throw up just thinking about it. |
I have been paid to be:
- Summer intern at a civil engineering firm - Summer intern at a manufacturing facility that made boxes for film - Food service worker at college (known as a "Hasher") - Research assistant on indoor air quality (grad school) - Tutor at Score! learning center - Environmental engineer |
Lawn Mower Slave - ages 8-16
Paper Route - ages 8-12 (thanks Mom, she worked for the Mercury News and helped me get the job, first girl in the neighborhood) Babysitter Service - ages 9-14 McD's Company Store (very restricted, but good people) McD's Franchise in a mall (more freedom, but a lousy boss) Maxell - making blank cassettte tapes (noisy and miserable job and it's a surprise to me how many blank cassettes actually worked after seeing how poorly they were made) 2 months (never on any resume) Macy's Sales Assistant 1.5 years Safeway - Courtesy Clerk then store bookeeper 5 years Tower Records (which overlapped with Safeway for a few years until I moved to SF) 10 years total (most fun job I ever had, was classical and later fine tuned to opera buyer, opened a couple of stores and always thought the yearly inventory counting sessions to be a archaic but weirdly fun episode, especially when the counts in some rows were wildly off and the management began to really stress) IP Law - Foreign Department Secretary was the start, where I began to learn my trade that is now a 20 year career that varied from foreign-based trademark paralegal, client practice liason and legal secretary in patent prosecution. 20 years! I thank every day my first boss, a crazy Swiss/Italian lady who was the head of the Foreign Dept. and fought to hire me, the person with absolutely no experience. By doing so, she gave me an opportunity to work at a job where I can plant my butt in any city in the US and get a job, and a decent paying one at that. The only stuff on my resume now is the last 10 years of my career in IP law. Okay, WB, tell us some stories! |
Library page
Dessert counter/espresso slave Counter wench at Mrs. Fields, the company whose cookies I will never eat again. Dishwasher for one day, possibly the longest in my life. School photo assistant (best revenge ever! Oh, your student ID card photo isn't cute enough? Tough.) "Off-campus library assistant" (In the dark ages, before most universities developed significant e-journal collections - people getting degrees at off-site locations (mostly teachers getting their required masters degrees) would fax in requests for journal articles and I would fax copies to the extension program office for them to pick up, order their ILLs, mail books to them, etc...) Plastic widget assembler/job coach for the developmentally disabled (at a plant where they had jobs appropriate to their skills, and the rest of us filled in the other jobs as needed and helped out the "special employees", as we were supposed to call them.) Receptionist in some kind of annoying business that now I can't even remember what it was. Data entry for a mental health HMO office that managed the local Medicaid money. Secretary senior/Administrative assistant/Assistant to the Chair at the nursing school. Budget flunky (current) LSAT tutor (also current) Perpetual student (also also current) Nothing particularly exciting. |

D'oh. I left off the one people seem to consider most interesting:
Quality Assurance Technician at a Kodiak, Alaska, salmon cannery. |
Oh yeah, I forgot my foray into the bottom rung of a
Of course, I got most of my money back the first time around, and apparently someone who lost more and his lawyer friend let me hitch a ride to recover most of the rest of what I as owed. Which was surprising. Most class-action suits never seem to get as much back as was lost due to lawyer fees, etc... Whatever. |
I forgot, I also did time working for a movie theatre that showed only old movies (natch). How could I forget that? Ben-Hur 7 days in a row......
|
I forgot my one paid gig as an actor in Berkeley.
Also my brief stint going door to sell tickets and raise funds for a local track meet to benefit Olympic hopefuls that apparently was not going to occur. I knew I didn't have to go back to work the next day when I watched the place being busted on the local news. |
I might as well complete my short list.

Babysitting - I had no allowance, but I had a good amount of frequent customers in the small Orthodox Jewish community of the west San Fernando Valley. It was the only upside to having no one my age in said small Orthodox Jewish community.
I helped organize a pile of books for a new Jewish day school's library. Answered phones at a custom hot rod place. Their claim to fame was that they built the hot rod used on Tim Allen's Home Improvement. Worked there for 2 months or so - pay was a joke. Worked two days for a shady telemarketer. Showed up on day three and they were gone without a trace. All commission, didn't make a dime. Worked one day at a wannabe Claire's Boutique at the mall. Quit. Discovery Zone, a now-defunct take on Chuck E Cheese (emphasis on play zones, not video games). I loved the kids, disliked the parents, was enslaved by management. Quit after 2 or 3 months, which felt like a year. They begged me to stay. Filing insurance papers, then filing insurance papers. Temped one summer at a pill factory, doing filing/phones. Boy, I must have a case of the memory gaps. I'm forgetting some jobs! :(
Disneyat's post about working at the Main Place Mall triggered my memory! I also worked at: The Record Shop (Main Place Mall)- So much fun! One day, the drummer for a known Glam band at the time came in and asked me out! His pick-up routine was actually going to get his CD, and pointing out his picture on the back cover. I cannot believe that even worked on me. :( Music Plus (Northridge) - I did this while in college and didn't really have fun at all. However, I worked with a guy who was a drummer (what was it with drummers?) in a struggling garage glam band & we ended up dating. He had long, curly big hair, tight leather pants & those billowy pirate blouses that all of the hair banders wore at the time. Haha! I thought he was so dreamy. He looked like Kip Winger & all. :D By the way, this was back when glam was still popular. Not, like, last week. ;) :p Edited To Add: Does Music Plus or any of these places exist anymore? I haven't seen an actual record store in ages besides Tower Records, which was on the brink of bankruptcy a few years ago! I remember the Music Plus in Northridge became a Blockbuster music store which quickly went out of business. At Music Plus, we were located next to CSUN, so it was always an endless parade of frat boys asking to rent Faces Of Death which, hello, we didn't carry. My favorite video that we rented? Frankenhooker. :D Of course, I rented it. I suggest you do, too. It's the story of a crazed scientist who loses his girlfriend in a tragic LAWN MOWER accident. He decides to reconstruct her, but only her head is salvageable. So, in order to collect other body parts, he lures hookers into his motel room, and gives them SUPER CRACK (yes, you read right) to smoke. The crack is so powerful it causes the hookers to explode, thus giving him the needed body parts. Good golly, that movie SUCKED! |
Quote:
Music Plus is long gone. I think The Wherehouse is the closest you can find to a "Music Store" chain remaining, but I suspect they have more sales with movies than music (or at least comparable). If you want to purchase a CD from a bricks and mortar store, Borders, B & N, and Best Buy are probably some of your better sources for a "chain" store. There are a lot of other places as well (Wal Mart, Target, etc.) I am sure there are still a few remaining stand-alone stores, but that will vary by geographic region. |

Heehee! :D
You know, I wish I could even remember. It was a long, long, long time ago. I remember the Esprit one like it was yesterday for some reason! And I modeled in that one ages before Betsy Johnson. All I remember is that it was in Los Angeles. I remember combing through the wardrobe and being so excited to be wearing the clothing, and a little nervous to wear others. However, it wasn't like a gigantic New York show or the ones you see during Fashion Week (One reason? I'm too short-I'm almost at the 5'7 mark). I forgot that I once did a modeling assignment for Vidal Sassoon. My hair was long & almost platinum blonde, and they chopped it to my shoulders and dyed it fire engine red. People either loved it or hated it, but I loved it! I thought it was more exciting being a redhead! :) I was offered a modeling job when I worked in Hollywood as a receptionist. I wish I would have taken it, but I was too nervous at the time! I was supposed to be covered in silver body paint, in a silver bikini, in rollerskates. I had visions of Buddy Ebson, the original Tin Man, nearly dying from silver paint. Plus, I have to be honest, modeling was not my bag. I wanted to be a writer or journalist more then anything. Plus, I was really young & a little too insecure. In my mind, I'd always be thinking, people must look at me and be like, "yeah, right". I look in the mirror and see a trillion flaws! I wish I could remember more. However, now I'm old hag. :p |
Gotcha... my memories were of the NY shows.
When I get along to posting my jobs to this thread (a little too close to home now with my current job search), you'll see that I was the Music Supervisor for several Betsey fashion shows back in the day. I worked directly with the person who designed all the stuff for the runway shows - and then I married her. |
I don't think I've done anything exciting but here goes...
Picking fruit when I was a teen, strawberries, blueberries and cherries(did you know snakes live in trees!! I found out the hard way! Babysitting, teen years Maid and front desk help Telemarketer, I lasted two days Bakery worker Bowling alley- had to run everything alone Fire watch at a mill, carried around 200ft hoses Target Small plastics firm making the tabletop displays and folding boards for Sears Warehouse worker Auditor/inventory control Catering at many points in my life Now I'm just a mom, wife, school teacher and any other misc title that comes my way |
