So, anything cool going on for the 4th?

It's dawned on me that I haven't heard about anything fun going on for the 4th, and that as of right now I'm going to be grilling a solo burger if I don't act soon, or at least get a really cool idea brewing.

So, anyone have anything fun going on?

Stan4dSteph 06-27-2007 06:30 AM

I might run a 4 mile road race in Saratoga, but I don't think that's what you were asking about...

Ghoulish Delight 06-27-2007 07:06 AM

It's on a freaking Wednesday. And I get ONLY the Wednesday off. How lame is that?

Kevy Baby 06-27-2007 07:23 AM

I have my one remaining regular (DJ) gig on the 4th - just like I do every year. I hate it.

Its insane when a holiday lands in the middle of the week..

Colorado State Mining Championship

skinnylycan 06-27-2007 08:05 AM

Im Unsure. I believe I will probably be at work... :-/ might be cool cuzz then I can see if Disney will do fireworks again that iSm was talking about.

:D

innerSpaceman 06-27-2007 08:25 AM

Yep, it's the only reason to keep the war going in Iraq ... because as long as our troops are in battle somewhere, I think Disney feels it obligatory to replicate a war-zone with pyrotechnics.

Until they stop the barrage they unleashed last year (and I'm sure all the new "Remember" toys inspired them as well), I will be hitting the Park on the 4th on a permenant basis.

I hesitate to recommend it ... because having a bunch of friends show up for something you praised as fantastic is one of the sure ways to have it cease immediately.

Nonetheless, last year's show was mindblowing and I would not be a friend to anyone I didn't heartily recommend it to.

So ... anyone who cares to .... Disneyland ... 4th of July ... Small World Mall (over by small world stroller parking) ... anytime from 6pm on.

:iSm:

Prudence 06-27-2007 08:27 AM

I'll be in Twin Falls, ID. Doesn't that sound exciting?

blueerica 06-27-2007 08:29 AM

Sounds lurvely...

And yeah, GD - as far as school is concerned, I go right back bright and early the next morning.

Cadaverous Pallor 06-27-2007 08:32 AM

Our City does a July 3rd thing each year, a carnival/concert, with fireworks. That may be worth a wander, but the 4th is clear so far...

mousepod 06-27-2007 08:39 AM

If anyone is in my neck of the woods, I'll be watching 1776 (as usual) and dining on hot dogs and potato chips.

innerSpaceman 06-27-2007 08:40 AM

Santa Monica College does a pretty good show the Saturday before the 4th. I run into some friends there that I only see once a year, and another friend is on the pyro crew ... so I'm really sad I'll be missing that while I'm camping in the mountains.

But it's another :iSm: officially-recommended 4th of July Fireworks Show.

ETA: Heheh - I watch 1776 every 4th also ... what are the chances of two such geeks posting on the same message board? Yes, I know there is a significant geek population here ... but American-Revolution-Musical-Theater geeks are unique

AllyOops! 06-27-2007 08:45 AM

My boss invited me & my boyfriend to go boating with him & other friends on July 3rd. We'll be relaxing on the boat as we watch the firework show at Catalina. However, my boyfriend has to work! I'll definitely go alone if it gets me out of working. Heck, I'll go naked & wear a life vest completely made out of weights if it gets me out of working. :p

As for July 4th, I have made no plans! Last year my boyfriend & I stayed at a cabin & went camping. If I never do that again, it will be too soon. In retrospect, I had a blast, but as I was outside watching fireworks, a BAT swooped and grazed my head. I watched the rest of the firework extravaganza bent over. Good thing drunken horny frat boys weren't present. :p

AllyOops! + rustic outdoors = notsomuch. :(

I would be completely fine just zoning out & watching the Twilight Zone marathon. I dedicate myself to doing that every year, and somehow end up at a party or BBQ. Not that I'm complaining. :)

blueerica 06-27-2007 08:47 AM

Oooh, there's a Twilight Zone marathon on the 4th?

Mousey Girl 06-27-2007 08:50 AM

I will probably be sitting at home, alone, on the 4th. it all depends on if boy wants to stay home with me or go with the other. If he stays home with me he has to understnad there would be very few fireworks.

SacTown Chronic 06-27-2007 08:54 AM

We're going to my dad's house for a day of hanging out with old people and eating hot dogs. Kill me now.

Capt Jack 06-27-2007 09:26 AM

wow. good question. Ive been so concentrated on prepping for Camp Swank and other mini-projects, I forgot I'll have some extra days when I get back.

Ponine 06-27-2007 09:30 AM

Me too! Boo.

Was at Disneyland last year. It wasn't super crowded either. Until later.

Not sure what I am doing this year. Probably a bbq at a friends house after I go see Transformers.

Now that my husband has been sent to Las Vegas for four weeks it looks like me and the boy are stuck doing the same thing! Woohoo, hanging with the old folks eating turkey dogs, blech. I threatened Dad over the turkey dogs, we'll see if he listened. They were disgusting last time.

Our little town is actually doing a fireworks show this year. Although with my neighbors and their out of state fireworks, I have a great show right here! I also worry that they'll set my house on fire:eek:

Capt Jack 06-27-2007 09:43 AM

bring a big pack of beer-brats and have them cook those up for you. they'll skip the turkey dogs next time, I'll betcha

madmonkeygirl 06-27-2007 09:52 AM

So, anything cool going on for the 4th?

I'm probablly working so and probablly late shift so i won't be home in time for fireworks or to do any BBQing or going out either. Oh well not a biggie cuz i think it is a holiday pay day for me anyways regardless. Plus i really don't care about the 4th all that much (it used to be funner when i was little).

I think they (Sci Fi) do this every year.

katiesue 06-27-2007 10:54 AM

I only have Wednesday off too. They do fireworks at the High School which is right by my apartment so I can view from the front porch if I don't feel like walking down there. I think Maddy is playing Polo or something with her dad in the morning. If she gets back in time we may head up to Disneyland for the fireworks.

Maybe I'll clean my house and get all organized - nah. Probably sleep in and watch crap TV all day.

It was my Dad's favorite holiday (he was a closet pyromaniac so anything involving fire was good). I do miss being in an area were you can get fireworks and set them off. Sparklers were always my favorite. Fireworks were banned one year because of fire danger so my Dad lit road flares, not really the same.

cirquelover 06-27-2007 10:59 AM

Wait a minute, you guys can't even get sparklers? Here I thought we had it bad, I'm sorry. I love doing sparklers with the boy, even if they are the cheesey ones now.

I think Wendy lives in the coolest state around here for fireworks. Last year we went to Washington for theirs and it was lots of fun. It was a little loud for the boy though.

katiesue 06-27-2007 11:10 AM

Here they're all banned. You can't get anything. Maddy went to a birthday party a couple years ago and the Dad had gotten a few packs of sparkers from somewhere. The kids had no idea what to do with them. They've had it drilled into them not to play with fire so most wouldn't even hold one. It kind of made me sad.

blueerica 06-27-2007 11:10 AM

I'm starting to think I may end up at my aunt's house, depending on what's going on there. Fireworks are permitted in Costa Mesa, at least according to last year's rules - so I might go blow some stuff up there.

I'm still hoping something better comes along. I want to have some non-family time, considering how much time I've spent with both sides over the last couple of weeks.

Cadaverous Pallor 06-27-2007 11:27 AM

Certain small cities in OC actually allow the sale of small scale fireworks, as long as they donate some of the profit to charity (I don't know the exact numbers). It's crazy, because in Garden Grove and elsewhere you'll see the fireworks booths spring up - at high schools. I'm not seeing it in Orange.

When we lived in Stanton, the local kids had their share of sparklers etc. It was pretty cool, though slightly frightening (I grew up without any of it).

Now I want to see 1776 - never seen it.

innerSpaceman 06-27-2007 12:10 PM

From what I understand from a Costa Mesa resident ... they can sell fireworks in Costa Mesa, even though they are illegal to use in Costa Mesa.

How's that for logic?!

blueerica 06-27-2007 12:35 PM

Hmm, weird. I used them in Costa Mesa with no problems...

And now I've just looked up the City of Costa Mesa's website. Yes, you can light fireworks between 4 and 10 PM. Though I've seen them go off much later.

Besides... who even starts lighting them until 9 with all that sunlight, anyway? Lame. :)

Yep! I remember being terrified to watch it as a little girl. It was always on KTLA channel 5. every July 4th.

Now, as an adult, it's one of my very favorite shows. It's also now on the Sci-Fi channel & they host the July 4th marathon. :)

Oh how my ass longs to remain in bed all day & watch it! ;)

I hear ya. When it comes to hot dogs, I'm like MickeyLumbo at a pool party: It's all beef or nothing.

Stan4dSteph 06-28-2007 08:49 AM

For those looking for a better alternative hot dog, check out this entry at Hungry Girl. I haven't tried the Hebrew Nationals yet, but I intend to soon.

SacTown Chronic 06-28-2007 08:52 AM

Wow, 50 calories per frank! Put me down for a half-dozen.

What?

Mousey Girl 06-28-2007 08:52 AM

Hebew Nationals are the only dogs my mom will buy. They are expensive, but totally worth every penny.

alphabassettgrrl 06-28-2007 09:09 AM

I don't know about during the day (nothing really planned yet) but at night I might be at the high school watching fireworks and directing traffic afterwards. Or I might be home, since my hubby is scheduled to fly out that night to Virginia.

Snowflake 06-28-2007 09:17 AM

Dunno, I think I'm going to either work on building a bookcase in my bedroom or start sanding, cleaning, spackling and priming the living room walls. I don't think I can stand looking at the paint test patches on the walls any longer. Even nice white primer would be an improvement.

It's usually too foggy to wander up the hill to watch the fireworks.

mousepod 06-28-2007 09:20 AM

Hey Snowflake... there's always 1776 at Casa de mousepod.

blueerica 07-03-2007 03:22 PM

I don't think I've seen 1776. If I have, it's just passed through my mind... (not that it's hard to do... it's like a wind tunnel in there!)

Morrigoon 07-03-2007 03:32 PM

Well, my guy is off in Vegas all week, and I can't join him because a) nobody to watch Mr. Barnum, and b) no money for gas to get out there.

So I'm free... anyone wanna do BBQ/swimming at Casa de Cindy?

lindyhop 07-04-2007 01:09 PM

The first week of the month is always the busiest at work so when the holiday is mid-week I don't make any big plans. And this year not only do I have my own work, I get to cover for other people who are taking Thursday and Friday off. I'm not bitter, much.

I'm planning to go see Ratatouille later today and then go home and try to sleep while my neighbors do a full-scale simulation of downtown Baghdad. Where did I put my earplugs?

Moonliner 07-04-2007 01:40 PM

Me mum's in town with her new beau. He's never seen the fireworks from the National Mall so I'm packing up to haul my tired butt downtown. I suppose I should be more excited....

Morrigoon 07-04-2007 02:35 PM

Well, so far all I've done is devastate the ant population and vacuum.

I'd still like to go see Ratatouille at some point, but that'll have to be at night when a) I don't have to go out in the heat, and b) the kiddos are less likely to be there.

wendybeth 07-04-2007 03:11 PM

I'm being a complete slug today- the most energetic thing I have planned is laundry and dinner.

Yikes! I hope Moon's not regretting this: National Mall evacuated due to severe weather.

Mousey Girl 07-04-2007 04:23 PM

Nickolas and I are heading to my younger sister-in-law's for a bbq and fireworks. My m-i-l called us Sunday to invite us over.

Nope. Not a problem at all. We waited until after the rain passed through (about 6:30pm) to head down and then went right in. We were actually not on the mall proper. We went to a location by the Iwo Jima memorial. Nice view and a bit less crowded.

Thanks for thinking about me!

Goodnight and happy 4th everyone!

CoasterMatt 07-04-2007 09:07 PM

I got double pay for today, AND I won a portable DVD player :)

I also got to spend the whole day in a nice air conditioned room, and most of the people I dealt with were surprisingly pleasant.

Alex 07-04-2007 09:17 PM

Note to self: When applying sunscreen before sitting in direct sunlight for three hours during a baseball game, do not somehow completely forget to do your arms.

wendybeth 07-04-2007 09:57 PM

Spent most of today in luge-mode, then got busy this evening and did laundry, cleaned cat litterboxes, made bbq ribs and stuff for dinner (not necessarily in that order) and am now sorting through stuff in the Girl's second bedroom, trying to make a path to the closet.

Earlier tonight, Trudy asked Tori if she knew why we were celebrating today, and I burst out laughing. At the time she asked, we were all sprawled over the furniture watching 'Matilda' and hardly exhibiting signs of life. (Tori answered correctly, btw). I couldn't help but laugh, because if this is what celebrating is passing for nowadays, God help me. We can't even light fireworks anymore- this has become just another boring holiday.

Ghoulish Delight 07-04-2007 10:40 PM

Luge mode?

Mousey Girl 07-04-2007 10:43 PM

It's when you are determined to be too lazy to move a figging muscle. Actually, probably as unlike a real luger as could be, but there you have it.

Try to find a store that sells Neutrogena After Sun. It's hard to find (my Target and local supermarkets don't carry it) but it's a miracle product and really helps prevent peeling as well as soothing the burn. It also smells nice, which is a bonus, and isn't sticky like aloe gel.

Alex 07-05-2007 08:10 AM

Actually doing anything to ameliorate discomfort would be very unme. But thanks for the recommendation should it become unbearable.

blueerica 07-05-2007 08:28 AM

Last night was fun. Went up to LA and watched fireworks from a rooftop with LSPE & EH1812. All was good except for the scary ladder and the old Asian guy who came out to lay the beat down on some hoodlums, a.k.a. US.

He brought a stick out that would put a bat to shame.

Ghoulish Delight 07-05-2007 08:30 AM

I always knew you three were trouble.

BarTopDancer 07-05-2007 08:43 AM

Ouch. I hurt.

Drove to my friends house (at Atlanta and Newland for those familiar with HB)
We to Main St. and watched the Parade. Then we walked back to his house and lounged around at the neighborhood bbq and got some color. The morons on the street behind us were shooting fireworks into the sky and almost nailed the HBCopter. Real smart. We walked back to the pier for the fireworks and got rained on by ash and watched as they almost blew up the pier. YAY! Hobbled back to his house with ash in the eye. Boo.

My legs are killing me.

Neighbors were blowing stuff up. They were fined by the cops too. Best thing ever was the cops patrolling Main St. in a rented minivan. I wish I had my camera. It seems that the *increased enforcement* was cops in rental cars cruising the neighborhood.

Ponine 07-05-2007 09:50 AM

Whew.. glad thats over.
I spent the day part of the 4th cooking and prepping for a friends 4th party. They indulged my child in a water balloon fight, so it wasnt all bad. And I got to play with thier 6 month old.... all good things.

But then on my walk to fireworks I tripped and fell, and now it hurts to walk on my foot, and I think I may loose my big toenail from the talk of those at work who have seen my foot.

Wheeee!!!!! An injury on a holiday!!! I'm part of the club!

JWBear 07-05-2007 09:53 AM

If they had to rent extra vehicles, why didn't they rent some of those fake police cars they use in movies and TV shows?

Mousey Girl 07-05-2007 10:38 AM

BPD uses little white cars so that no one knows they're about to be busted. Unfortunatly they were no where around us last night. I'm not meaning my sister-in-law's, but at home where Boy's friend's tweaker parents were doing some really stupid (and loud) things.

I am just glad that PoohDog is a mellow beast (most of the time). He was in his sleeping area by the backdoor and was sooo happy when we got home. We both gave him some extra attention and love. He was scared, but not to the point of going crazy. Chicken wasn't phased a bit. She was in her "coop" making just enough noise to let me know where she was.

blueerica 07-05-2007 07:54 PM

alphabassettgrrl 07-05-2007 07:56 PM

Katiesue, I'm with you. My dad died in 1995, but I miss him. I have fond memories of blowing chit up. Even when things didn't work. :) It was fun. We never went to the "official" fireworks display.

Alex 07-05-2007 07:58 PM

The 4th of July was my dad's birthday. He would have been 50 this year.

alphabassettgrrl 07-05-2007 08:02 PM

My dad died shortly after turning 50. I'm not sure to be happy to avoid seeing him decline, or to be sad because I miss him. He came to me in a dream and seemed to say that everything was all right but he's still my daddy and my inner child throws tantrums occasionally because she misses him.

katiesue 07-05-2007 08:06 PM

Fireworks were banned one year so my dad lit road flares. Not the same but fire was involved.

CoasterMatt 07-05-2007 08:09 PM

I don't know exactly what crazy device my dad set off one year, but it burned a hole in the street and set off a LOT of car alarms.

I loved throwing them down storm drains - it intensified the boom.

We also threw the water proof ones (AKA Seal Controls) into pools until we got in BIG trouble when they needed to be completely re-plastered

blueerica 07-05-2007 09:06 PM

Last summer at my friend Brad's house (not anyone you guys know), we blew up a massive amount of illegal fireworks, including seal control. Did two in the pool and did three others out in the street.

Scared. The. Piss. Out. Of. Me.

Capt Jack 07-05-2007 09:31 PM

yeah, those are pretty serious. my friends and I buried one in a vacant gravel lot once. set it off. the rocks felt like shotgun pellets hitting us

it was sooo cool

Mousey Girl 07-05-2007 09:37 PM

hehehe I understand that there were fireworks at David's house yesterday. His folks told him that he could go to his sister's but he had to leave Dawn and her kids home. They could hear her throwing a major tantrum through the phone when she found out I was invited, but she was not. :)
